Max Scherzer Scratched From Game 5 Start

By George Miller | October 27, 2019 at 5:54pm CDT

5:54 pm: At a pregame media session, Scherzer told reporters (including Mark Zuckerman of MASN) that he is also dealing with nerve irritation in his neck. The ace added that he underwent a cortisone shot that will take approximately 48 hours to kick in, seemingly putting to rest any hope he could return in Tuesday’s Game 6. He remains on the Nationals’ World Series roster, but those in attendance at this evening’s media session (including Todd Dybas of NBC Sports) seemed less than optimistic about his chances of returning by Wednesday’s potential Game 7.

3:36 pm: Nationals starter Max Scherzer, who was slated to start Sunday’s World Series game five, has been scratched from his start, according to Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle. In his place, Joe Ross will take the mound for the Nationals. Per Jesse Dougherty of the Washington Post, Scherzer has been dealing with spasms in his neck and right trapezius.

Manager Dave Martinez told reporters that Scherzer began experiencing spasms last night, and woke up this morning in worse condition, rendering him unable to go tonight. Martinez also said that the Nationals will keep Scherzer on the roster in hopes that he shows enough improvement in the next couple of days to pitch in either game six or seven (if necessary). As of now, the Nats plan to start Stephen Strasburg in game six on Tuesday, with the possibility that Scherzer could be available in relief, or as the starter for a potential seventh game.

Martinez noted that Scherzer’s injury influenced his bullpen management in last night’s loss: he refrained from using Joe Ross, bracing for the possibility that Scherzer may not be able to start Sunday’s game. It’s also notable that neither Sean Doolittle nor Daniel Hudson, the Nats’ two most reliable relievers, has pitched since game one last Tuesday, meaning that Martinez might be able to stretch them out if he can’t get sufficient length from Ross.

Scherzer’s injury is a crucial development in a virtual must-win fifth game. With Gerrit Cole on the hill for the Astros, it was already going to be a tough game, but without their ace on the mound, the Nationals will have to count on Joe Ross, who found his stride in August and September. The freshness of the bullpen will help the Nats’ cause, with the possibility that both Doolittle and Hudson could be asked to get six outs each.

Their hopes died when they couldn’t win one of game 3 or 4.. Even before Max was declared out, I doubt they would have been able to beat Verlander and Cole again.

Verlander has been pretty meh all postseason. Plus, look at all of the innings piling up on their arms. They are both well past career high innings pitched this year.

I think that is a good point, there is no question it makes a difference, but I don’t think it’s a large difference. The Nats are still playing a home game today and I think it’s a huge advantage to have Scherzer start game 7. Providing they make it that far.

Washington has to score runs and the last two games they haven’t. It’s hard to beat Cole no matter who your are starting.

If Scherzer pitched today, Game six would still be the game the Nationals needed to win. I think game six is still the game regardless who wins today.

I know there’s all this fuss about “being first” and getting stories up as soon as they break or whatever, but come on, these writers need to edit their posts for typos. “With morning in worse condition.” Especially now that it’s been an hour.

Some MLBTR writers are a little over-concerned with being fast or trying to flex their writing muscles with fancy diction than actually editing. Typos make any attempts at word-crafting moot.

A stiffed neck Max, still pitches better than a full rested Ross on any giving Sunday (had to throw that in there lol)..I can see Martinez doing this as a tactical move. Like maybe putting propaganda in the news, starting Ross for -3-5 innings (if he makes it that far) than putting in Scherzer. It’s the damn World Series for crying out loud. The man pitched against the Phillies after getting hit in the eye with a line drive, and shut us down. Your telling me he’s going to sit out because of a stiff neck? I smell BS

If they lose the series, people are going to point to this injury, but the real turning point was game 4. Corbin vs the Astros bullpen was a must win. Losing that gave the Stros all the momentum.

Astros are too good of a team to count out at any point; down 0-2, I knew they’d make it a series, but I do hope games 5 and 6 are split. I want this to go 7. It’s been a fun series.

PeeWeeGaskins. No, but I am not pathetic as you appear to be, and I don’t have a PeeWee like you either. Have a nice day.

You did not SERIOUSLY just tell someone OTHER than Trump not to mix politics and sports did you?

He did and he is right. Fans pay big money to support their team, not to heckle some guy in a pivotal World Series game. Dumb and dumber.

Teams love mixing it with sports, fans can as well. To think they weren’t supporting their team is not true at all. That’s just a weird thing to say.

That had more to do with hatred than sports. They turned their attention off their team and toward 1 guy. That isn’t support. Not even close to support.

Why screw with Stras’ schedule, save the Scherzer bullet for game 7.

Strasburg pitches like the ace he is in Game 6. All the chips will be in the pot for an exciting Game 7. Sir Max comes out firing bullets and Nats win it all. Strike up the band and start the parade.

Sid Bream was correct; Up 2-0 coming home and headlines about Trump not throwing the first pitch is announced. Team and/or media can take the blame for that. No reason to make that a story. Headlines should have been “Underdog Nats looking to close out first WS win since 1924”.

Then we roll into Game 5 where there’s more press about Trump. Why? He arrives, the fans take their attention away from the team and suddenly Houston jumps all over Ross. Trump effect? How about bad fans.

Nats fans….you do not know when you will be back in the World Series. Next time try cheering on your team instead of unleashing your teen angst toward the President. It’s about baseball and it’s about the game. The players on the field have grinded hard to get there and that’s the thanks they get? Players deserved better than that.

Well said, the haters have gotten so old in this country. Many people WERE NOT happy with obama during his time being president or with his antics, but did people publicly protest him and did the media go out their way to negatively cover him 99% of the time?? No, quite the contrary so its time to grow up haters and accept the system and this democracy.

I want to watch a baseball game and if I were a paying patron for a very pivotal Game 5 – the LAST home game for my home team I would have been ticked off. The antics were embarrassing and unnecessary.

Hypothetical here, but what if certain free agents are Trump supporters? Or their parents are Trump supporters? Do these players really want politics displayed in the middle of a World Series game like that? Even non-supporters may have felt uncomfortable in that ballpark. The fact we are even discussing this is a problem. That’s on the fans and the media. The media has skated on this. They stirred this up starting before Game 3.

It is too bad for Nats fans that Max has that issue, probably will not pitch – just the prep throwing etc will prohibit..plus it will be a distraction thinking about the issue..I know first hand about those nerve issues not a quick fix, the back, neck, nerve all the same since they affect your spinal cord. I couldn’t golf for 6 months

I think the Cats POSSIBLY could have talked Max into getting an extra 3 days of rest, knowing that Cole was probably going to beat them last night. My thought is, they figured Strasburg would beat Verlander who has lost his last 3 starts, to even up the series, even if they lost last night, which they did. So Cole is out of the series, Verlander is very gettable, and Max with 7 days rest will beat Greinke in Game 7. Course, I’m mostly a paranoid conspiracy theorist, so I doubt it’s true. But should it work out that way, and the Nats take this in 7, you heard it here first.

Likely starter if the WS goes to 7 but I could see him making a long relief appearance in game 6 if needed. I’d say under that scenario, Sanchez would start game 7 with Corbin available out of the pen.

I love reading these comments — the ones that are burying the Nats — after having crushed the Astros. It makes for great reading this lovely morning!
