Phillies Hire Bryan Price As Pitching Coach

By Jeff Todd | October 31, 2019 at 10:32am CDT

10:32am: The Phillies have formally announced the hiring.

9:22am: The Phillies have made a key hire for the staff of incoming manager Joe Girardi. As expected, the team will bring on Bryan Price as pitching coach, per Matt Gelb of The Athletic (via Twitter). He’s said to have turned down offers to serve as the pitching coach with the Diamondbacks and with the Padres this month, instead opting for the Philadelphia opportunity.

Price, 57, served as the Reds manager from 2014 until his firing early in the 2018 campaign. Before that, he had a lengthy history as a pitching coach, including stints with the Mariners (2000-06), Diamondbacks (2007-09), and Reds (2010-13). He’s the first major addition to incoming manager Joe Girardi’s new-look pitching staff, and the Phillies can now shift their attention to find a replacement for interim hitting coach Charlie Manuel.

Excellent track record with the Mariners. They had some nice bullpen arms, but outside of King Felix didn’t have a strong starting rotation or offense to take the team to the next level.

Ironic how as soon as Harper leaves the Nationals they win the World Series without him.

Funny how before Strasburg and Harper nobody cared about the Nats. I remember when Nats fans used to sale tickets for home games to Phillies fans.

DC fans still don’t really care about the Nationals they have had plenty of playoff games this year where they couldn’t sell out the ball park.

I’m not sure the Nats get Corbin and others if they opted to keep Harper. I don’t think you can point to him as a player, but you could say that the money they saved and reallocated helped to win the WS

It’s not that at all. Harper was a key piece that helped turn DC baseball around. Nats fans acting like ownership group didn’t offer him 300mil to stay. It’s not like they didn’t try. I’m a Phillies fan and I’m happy for the Nats. But Nats fans de need to understand Harper did way more good for them then bad.

good luck phillies hiring old school anti analytics guys. usually doesn’t work out unless you have a great front office or smaller position coaches who are up on the data.

How is Joe Girardi an anti-analytics guy? He used it plenty managing the Yankees.

I am not sure about this, but I just want to the Phillies to be the best in their division. It is not going to be easy with the 2019 World Champion and the Braves, but still I like the Phillies.

I think the NL east will be really good next year if the Phillies can add some pitching. The Mets have a pretty good team. The braves are great and the Nats, while they may lose Rendon and Stras, just won the WS so you can’t say they won’t be good next year

Nats will have it harder than your average ex-champs. could lose both Rendon and Stras, Anibal and Max are a year older, and Corbin still has major surgery in his past.

Good Point. I wonder what’s going to happen if it’s Strasburg putting on the Red Pinstripes in Clearwater this Spring.

        Hey, it COULD happen.

Now we need a hitting coach and a new pitching staff. One more bat too, either a 3B or a CF and put Kingery in the other spot. Or maybe both and have Kingery be a super utility guy.

i’d be fine non tendering hernandez and giving kingery the 2b slot. sign a solid 4th OFer who could push odubel and potentially fill in if he flops. 3B to me is the real question mark, not much on the market other than donaldson and rendon but that’s money better spent on pitching imo

between odubel, quinn, and new 4th OFer that’d sure up the OF enough to spend elsewhere

No one wants Odubel and I’d be shocked if they bring him back. In fact, I’d be surprised if he was on any team this year, he’s a f’ing bonehead. Re-sign Dickerson. Cutch/Kingery in CF. Bruce/Dickerson in LF. Harper RF.

odubel has a guaranteed contract so he’s getting paid regardless and he’s a useful player albeit streaky. it’d be silly not to bring him back even with the off field problems.

i could see Kingery sticking at 3B and Haseley in CF until Bohm comes up. 1 year rental for a stopgap at 2B and a plus bench bat later on. Haseley is an elite defensive outfielder that can play CF and has offensive upside. Kingery has offensive upside as well and is a competent 3B. I like Starlin Castro as a cheap 2B option.

Moustakas. He can play both 3B and 2B. Plus a lefthanded bat with some pop.

I hated Bryan Price as the manager of the Reds but have nothing but praise for what he did as the pitching coach. This is a good hire for the Phillies and makes them better.
