Marlins Met With Yasiel Puig

By Jeff Todd | December 13, 2019 at 1:01pm CDT

As they continue to pursue outfield pop, the Marlins held a meeting recently with free agent Yasiel Puig, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network (via Twitter). That adds another intriguing possibility to the club’s widespread search.

The Marlins have been connected to quite a few corner outfielders to this point of the winter, both via trade and free agency. During the Winter Meetings, the club also chatted with the representatives of Avisail Garcia and Corey Dickerson — two of the top alternative corner outfielders remaining in free agency. Kole Calhoun and others are also reportedly under consideration.

Puig seems to be a fascinating target for the Miami organization. The Cuban star would certainly inject some charisma into the roster and suit the club’s desire to improve the appeal of its product for the local fanbase. As we noted in our ranking of the top 50 free agents, however, there has seemed to be one major roadblock: the highly strained relationship of Puig and Don Mattingly, the former Dodgers skipper who now helms the Fish. Evidently, there’s at least a willingness to explore a surprising reunion.

Whether the sit-down leaves Puig as a target or took him out of contention isn’t really known. Apart from his propensity for hijinks — sometimes endearing, other times not — Puig is a bit of a high-risk/high-reward player from a pure baseball perspective. He turned in approximately average overall results with the bat in 2019 and 2016, but was about twenty percent over the league mean in the two intervening seasons. Puig has a rifle in right field and has at times graded as an elite defender, but was average in the eyes of defensive metrics in 2019.

The only reason I can come up with as to why certain fans vehemently hate Puig, even going so far to compare him with a murderer, is that the person hating him is a racist who only needs a crumb of a reason to hate a non-white player.

Prove me wrong? Go into detail as to why you hate him. I challenge you, johnsilver (lol kinda saying something about yourself for not putting “long” in your user name though)

He says that signing Puig wouldn’t be a decent move without knowing any of the hypothetical particulars. That’s a comment on Puig.

Not calling JohnSilver racist at all (he could just think Puig sucks or is overrated), but it’s difficult to interpret his comment as anything other than a slam on both Puig and Jeter.

Sufferfortribe.. That poster doesn’t care for me.. Feeling is mutual and doesn’t bother me.

My distaste for Jeter is the ownership group that took over for Loria came in, stripped them worse then Loria ever did.. With jeter doing the deals and getting little to nothing in return.

Miami fans have suffered for nearly 20y now. The wrong group got the team and many expect it was because jeter was put in that group to give it and advantage just as a showpiece.. Nothing more since he didn’t inject much capital. Topping it off the giveaway’s of Ozuna, Stanton, Yelich which it seemed at the time brought back pennies on the dollar in return.. Only Realmuto seemed to be a close to fair deal, then point was he stripped the marlins worse than “evil” loria ever did.

THAT is my disdain for Jeter.

@Strike Four I’m a fan. I hate Puig. My favorite player is black. So am I racist? Anyone who tosses racism into a baseball argument is really sinking to pathetic depths and screams low intelligence.

He’s a showboater. He doesn’t try half the time and takes plays off. He has been documented as being late for games. He’s been seen at nightclubs early in the morning before day games the next day. He’s polarizing to the media and clubhouse. Ask Don Mattingly how he feels about Puig, which was stated above. Frankly, he’s got the talent to be one of the best in the game, yet he’s looking for his third team in two years and nobody seems to be scrambling to pick him up.

The way he came to the U.S. shows some further insight as to who he is and why the word murderer comes out:

You clearly weren’t following what Loria did to this franchise. Not going to argue about what Jeter has or hasn’t done. As a fan, I like the direction the team is going.

But Loria destroyed the Expos and then fleeced everyone from the moment he bought the Marlins to the moment when he sold it.

I know I’m a marlins fan so I’m biased, but no matter what year it is the marlins are a scrappy baseball team. They can sneak up on you and take the lead back when it looks like the game is over. They are exciting even in a lot of their losses. Again I know I’m biased. You can’t tell me the orioles are more interesting than the marlins with a consensus top 5 farm system and youthful players with lots of potential..

As for Puig going to Miami, that’s a wise move. He brings charisma, an excellent defensive arm in right and he’s improved a lot with his clubhouse demeanor since the Mattingly/LA days. He’s a goof but that’s his charm. He genuinely is having fun out there. If Miami doesn’t sign him, Tampa should!

Because that’s what that term means. And with prisons being horrifically slanted towards non-whites, I can only take it that your name is wanting more non whites to being locked up for life.

If he’s given 1 year and 5-6 million, they could release him and bite the cost of it doesn’t work. If it works out, it would be a nice boost for Miami. Seems pretty low risk and Puig plays the game hard so would be a nice example for the young guys.

Exact;y. Porcello just netted $10 million and he was awful last year and average the previous two. Puig was average last year and above average the previous two. He should be able to provide decent hitting with some pop, ok defense with a great arm, and a little bit of speed. Wouldn’t be surprised if he got 1/$12 million or even 2/$20 million.

Personally, I wouldn’t offer Puig more than 6 million. There are a lot of average to above average outfielders on the market and Marlins have a couple outfielder prospects that might be ready to contribute in 2020 (Monte Harrison, Jesus Sanchez, Magneuris Sierra, Victor Victor Mesa, etc.)

I’m typically very critical of the Marlins. I truly think they are bad for baseball because year after year putting an embarrassing product on the field and being completely unable to bring out a crowd in a baseball rich state. Then they have done a pretty awful job at this rebuild and I don’t believe they will be good any time soon (assuming they don’t make any good moves). BUT, If they bring Puig and Garcia that would make a lot of sense. Affordable and solid players. Plus Puig is a big character that is from a similar culture from those cities. Not to mention Garcia’s background. I’d hate to see them get the from a Braves fan standpoint. That would make them significantly better. And they got Villar and that big fellow from Milwaukee… that team is gonna be solid and completely wipe out my opinion of them.

Villar, Anderson, and Cooper is a solid 1-3 in the batting order. There isn’t much after that. Alfaro and Diaz have some pop and Aguilar has had one good season and one terrible one.

Harold Ramirez had a solid rookie year. You add another OF (Puig, Garcia, or other), then they have a lineup along the following, which is starting to look decent:

        LF/2B – Villar
        SS – Rojas
        3B – Anderson
        1B – Aguilar
        RF/LF – Cooper
CF/RF Puig or Garcia or other
        C – Alfaro
        2B – Diaz or CF – Ramirez

This isn’t a bad lineup. Even if someone falters, someone else gets a regular gig.

And this is before any of the prospects that are MLB-ready have shown anything to win a job this year.

          We’ll see if it’s a bad lineup.

As for the rest of it, it seems like you’re just looking to take a jab no matter what.

As for Yelich, he forced the Marlins into a trade. So far, we have Yammamoto who looks like a decent SP. We’ll see what Diaz and Monte Harrison are. Brinson is on his last legs with this team. And even with the trade, nobody knew that Yelich was going to explode like that. When we trade him, he was valued less than Stanton and Ozuna. Hid only saving grace was that we had him signed long term to a team-friendly deal. The only bash that can be said was that Jeter didn’t want anyone around that didn’t want to be around. If Jeter would’ve decided that Yelich was staying because he signed a contract, then everybody would’ve bashed Jeter for forcing a player to stay who didn’t want to.

That lineup can work too. Solid lineup. We’re not going anywhere. The main goal is development and having the right pieces around the younger bats to protect them somewhat. Aquilar is there until he fails or until Lewin Diaz or one of the OFs is ready.

The marlins haven’t had a winning season in 10 years and in their franchise have more 100+ losing season than they do 90+ winning season. In fact, since 1993 only 6 above .500 seasons with last year being their 2nd worse year in franchise history. To tell me they are making the right moves is blinded wishful thinking.

If they got Puig and Garcia… I think you can definitely see them having a really good season sooner than later. Freeing up some assets to flip. But I wouldn’t trust them to flip players responsibility. Historically, even under their newer Mgmt, they have been unable to do so….

if Puig can get his act together and really put in the effort and focus needed to succeed in the Majors I still think he has the skills to be a dominant offensive force for whoever signs him. But for whatever reason he just hasn’t seemed to be able to put things together and really live up to his potential. But he’s still relatively youthful and could put things together and potentially become the big-time impact bat he’s definitely capable of becoming.

this is all for the name, not the talent, he brings drama+ drama brings fans, have you ever seen the attendance at a marlins game? they dont exactly draw a crowd, they will sign anyone that will focus attention on them, i mean ask yourself whos ever gonna say ‘ im excited to go to the marlins game tonight’ jeter and his group want guys with some kinda reputation

Unless they acquire a cheap RF option via trade or waiver claim, I see MIA picking up Puig, Kole Calhoun or Avisail Garcia for RF.

All they did was ask him what flavor his bats are and how many licks it takes to get to the center of.
