January 24, 8:00pm: In comments to the media today, Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen threw some cold water on the idea of a significant move to change the complexion of the team’s outfield mix, as MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo was among those to cover. But he didn’t exactly slam the door shut.
When queried about the team’s plans in the outfield, Van Wagenen says he doesn’t want to “disrupt” the existing “chemistry” and “culture where people buy into one another.” In the money quote that has drawn the most attention, Van Wagenen said he doesn’t “see a deal that’s going to disrupt that environment.”
At the same time, Van Wagenen says he’s open-minded to changing the cast. “If there’s an opportunity to continue to improve our roster, we’ll explore it,” he says, “but our aggressiveness right now is focused on getting ready for Spring Training with the players we have.” It’s a bit unclear just what it means to aggressively prepare to open camp. What does seem evident from this comment is that the Mets (quite understandably) prefer to focus public energy on the existing roster … but aren’t ruling out further moves.
10:00am: The Pirates’ talks involving Marte have “intensified,” tweets MLB Network’s Jon Heyman, who lists the Padres and Mets as potential suitors, though it’s worth noting of course that the report comes just the morning after Lin indicated that talks with San Diego have “cooled.” Furthermore, SNY’s Andy Martino tweets that the Mets and Pirates are “pretty far apart” in their talks on Marte at the moment.
January 23: The Padres have their sights set on on a bona fide superstar, Red Sox right fielder Mookie Betts, and they’ve also been connected to Pirates center fielder Starling Marte in trade rumors this offseason. At this point, though, it doesn’t appear a Marte deal will come together between the Padres and Pirates. The teams’ talks “have cooled, likely over the asking price,” Dennis Lin of The Athletic writes (subscription link).
Marte’s not the player Betts is (few are), but that’s not to say he isn’t plenty valuable in his own right. In fact, the 31-year-old has been one of the majors’ top center fielders throughout his career. Marte totaled at least 3.0 fWAR for the sixth time in his seven full seasons last year, posted his second straight 20-20 campaign (23 home runs, 25 stolen bases) and slashed .295/.342/.503 over 586 plate appearances.
Despite Marte’s perennial effectiveness, there is a case that the Pirates and new general manager Ben Cherington should sell him sooner than later. Marte’s under control for a maximum of just two more years – a pair of seasons that don’t figure to wind up as playoff-caliber efforts for the club. And though Marte’s control is dwindling, his affordability should only boost his trade value. He’s due a reasonable $11.5MM this year and could then make a similarly affordable $12.5MM by way of a club option in 2021; that’s if Marte’s employer doesn’t buy him out for $1MM instead, but the odds of that happening appear quite slim right now.
There are several teams that would make sense as Marte suitors, as Jeff Todd of MLBTR explored this week. The Padres, who have been busy in the outfield this winter (they’ve added Tommy Pham and Trent Grisham, subtracted Hunter Renfroe and would like to get rid of Wil Myers’ contract), are one of them. So far, however, it doesn’t look as if San Diego has made much progress in trying to pry Marte out of Pittsburgh.
All American Johnsonville Dogs
Red Sox are willing to take on Myers contract Pirates are not.
Betts and Price make a ton of sense for the Padres and putting Myers at 1st makes tons of sense for the Red Sox.
If red Sox are willing to take all of Myers contract then Abrams Morejon Miller Baez Bolanos and Vosler could be the prospect haul the Red Sox get. Mlb ready assets and Boston clears mookies arb salary.
If red Sox take less than 80% of Myers contract bet abrams comes off the table and is replaced by like Quantril
aamatho18
Abrams is already off the table

None of the top 5 Padre prospects are being discussed which would include Abrams

The Mets need a backup catcher who is able to hit at least 230 ish. If they hired Russell Martin they would have a catcher who has successfully played in NY, still hits a good deal above 230, plus has some power too. Additionally, Martin calls a great game, frames well, is a good defensive catcher, and can occasionally throw guys out. He would be a HUGE improvement over Nido who only hits 180 at best, Nido has not thrown runners out successfully in 2019, so there is no reason to believe he will either be able to hit or thrown in MLB in 2020. Brodie, HIRE MARTIN NOW!!!

6 guys for 1 year of Betts, playing for a wild card spot? If Preller does that then he should be fired immediately instead of after the season.
AtlSoxFan
You need to add more guys if myers is part of the return.
I think boston would be happy with fewer prospects if myers stays in SD.
You need to remember myers has ZERO value, and is a negative aspect in any deal. To move myers you need to add talent.
This would be two trades in one – buy betts for 3 prospects, plus pay prospects to get rid of myers.
lowtalker1
Not for one year
I can throw scrub prospects at you if you want quantity

YOU need to remember that Price has NO value. Padres don’t eat both contracts. You’re high off that dirt weed. Come to CA where it’s legal and scientifically proven to get you to say this kind of dumb stuff.

The suggested haul here is very steep and I highly doubt will happen. Mookie has only 1 year of control for a team who still may not contend. Maybe as a rental if they make a playoff push.
nowheretogobutup
Your dreamin if you think the Friars would give up all those guys for a one yr rental of Betts, no way no how. I’d say three of those guys at the most plus Myers and the Friars eat 40% of Myers salary for the next two years.
Theghostoftycobb
I’m about to flag this post because of the stupidity. The red Sox are not willing to take on salary, esp for a player like Myers..

Myers is awful. If this deal is done Boston fans will be burning effigies of the front office by the All Star game.

Marte’s cf ratings on Fielding Bible are not good. Just an off year or is he really slipping?
SalaryCapMyth
That’s the big question. The guy is 31 and it is about that time regression starts kicking in.
aberdeen101
UMMM had his best career season in 2019, so …
ews34
Perhaps he over compensated because he had a rookie in left and a statue in right. The year before he had a gold glover in left and Polanco in right.
momTurphy
Also the toughest left field in all of baseball. Numbers would likely improve at any other park. But 31 is right about regression time for guys relying on speed like Marte.
nowheretogobutup
I don’t see the trade for Marte happening but I do see a trade with the Sox, Betts for three prospects (not including Gore or Patino ) and Myers with SD eating 40% of Myers contract for the next two yrs. This would put the Friars in the playoffs in 2020 and gives their farm system another year to mature for the Bigs in 2021.. Yes its a one yr rental but making the playoffs would be someone keeping their job the GM AJ and would bring some fire to San Diego..
DrDan75
There’s absolutely no guarantee that the Padres would make the playoffs, even if you add Betts. The Red Sox had him all last year and didn’t make the playoffs.
Javia
Some ratings say he is bad, some say he is a top 1/3rd CF. He would absolutely be better than any CF on SD’s roster outside of Margot.
paddyo furnichuh
He’s been declining for the last few seasons at the CF positions( r/t UZR & DRS)
jim stem
It’s a valid question regarding Marte’s defense. But one may also have to ask how of this is related to poor pitching or even limited team mates around him?
How are defensive metrics really computed and how do they translate to actually onfield wins and losses?
If you have a pitching staff getting lit up because they are missing targets, throwing meatballs, giving up line drives in the gaps and balls bouncing off walls, how does that translate to a defender’s numbers?
For instance, can you modify Marte’s numbers to, let’s say, what if he played center behind Verlander, Cole and the Astros’ staff?
On the flip side? What would the best centerfielder’s numbers lol like if he played for the 2019 Pirates?
I think numbers DO lie when you refuse to apply the human element. Would another +5 war hitter have made the Phillies an 86 win team? I highly doubt that player would have made up for all those 5 run losses and that pitching staff.
Throw your defensive numbers to the win if you have a pitching staff that gets lit up or not able to pitch to defensive alignments.
DonB34
Marte really has only played 2 years in center. Cutch was in center with Marte in left. They were going to move Marte to CF in 2017, then he got the PED suspension in early May. The last two years were the first he was actually a full time major league center fielder.
CubsFan73
Think that is a tad to much of Prospects for 1yr of Betts. Myers and Price contract basically wipe each other out!
If Preller did that hed lose his job this year, not next!
pads fan1980
Preller couldn’t do this swap without owners approval so if this deal happens it wont cost him his job because the owners approved the deal

So Betts and Marte are not going to be Padres. So I am wondering who else is available and could effectively cover the centerfields of the NL West while improving on the offensive output that the position has seen over the past few seasons…

I see the Padres getting Betts even for one yr. The GM is in a must win playoff spot for 2020 and a trade would possibly make this happen with Betts, Pham, Tatis, and Machado making some things happen in their line up.

The Pirates do, indeed, blow.
Kinda like that huge lead that the Leafs blew in the third period of that Game 7 to the Bruins years ago that was just named the best NHL game of the 2010’s.
Is that the consensus among Leaf fans, as well?
That that was the best game of the 2010’s? When the Leafs blew that huge lead in the third period to lose to the Bruins in that Game 7?
dcahen
Funny how they mentioned Marte’s perennial great #’s at CF, with 2019 being a major falloff. McCutcheon played CF for nearly all his career in CF for the Pirates. 3 years ago, Marte moved to CF, but Cutch moved back when Marte was suspended for 1/2 the season. So that leaves 2 years in CF for Marte, one good one defensively & one falloff. So 1 year makes you perennial. He’s fast, covers a lot of ground, & has a cannon arm. He also makes bonehead plays. He’s not elite in CF, but close.

In honor of MLK here is my if I had a dream. Pirates get Betts, Price and 8m a year for 3 years for Polanco, Craig and Olivia. Keep Marte and make a run for it. If it falls apart trade at the deadline and start the major rebuild. This would put the payroll at around 100m. They have been there before.

I’m interested in what the “asking price” actually is, because if the Padres won’t sacrifice a top 5 prospect for Betts plus Myers’ contract relief, I’m terrified of what they’d sacrifice for Marte. Shame how much teams are hoarding their prospects nowadays.
batteryoutlet
if redsox are going to tack on myers contract than the pads are tacking on gore and/or patino.

NO way are those two pitchers going anywhere they have some of the highest ratings in baseball, both could be SP for the Padres this year. I believe Gore is a 15 to 20 game winner for years to come and will more than likely be brought up in June for keeps.
DrDan75
Gore could wind up being the next Randy Johnson. They are both lefties with a similar physical build and he has cruised through the minors with ridiculous numbers. He stays put.

Mackenzie Gore is not 6’10

He could also be the next Julio Urias. An over-hyped lefty that ends up becoming an oft-injured middle reliever. Anything can happen.

nowheretogobutup
I wouldn’t bet on that one, Manny’s contract the way things are going will look very good to some teams. in three or four yrs.
Deleted Userrr
@nowheretogobutup why would anyone take Manny’s contract? They all took a hard pass on paying him all that money a year ago when he was coming off the best season of his career and now he is coming off the worst year of his career. And he also has an opt-out which means his contract is guaranteed to be underwater after 2023.
Ashtem
Anyone who trades for Marte needs to view him as a LF he is not a CF anymore
jtkuch
Says who? Some bunk defensive metrics? Actually watch him play and he’s more than a decent CF. Great speed, runs great routes, and has a cannon arm.
Jock2854
Yes but Pittsburgh stadium small OF unlike San Diego that is large!! He’d b better in a corner
ronnsnow
RF is small. CF and LF not so much.
Mike Werner
Small correction. Pittsburgh’s outfield is huge in left to center. Agree SD’s is larger, but PNC is a pitchers park.
Confortoismyspiritanimal
“more than a decent CF”
The problem is that the Pirates view him as a premier CF. The league views him as a very-soon-to-be corner OF.
Johnny Baseball
He was ranked 6th best CFer last season so I think it is the fans that are under valuing Marte not the league..
ronnsnow
Exactly. These comment boards are filled with fans making lowball offers to the Pirates. Even if Marte’s defence has slightly declined, he still has one of the strongest outfield arms in baseball, which would make him an elite defender on the corners while being a 20/20 hitter.
aberdeen101
Fans in general don’t understand trade value. Marte has it. Those who think he shouldn’t get a good return are complete idiots quite frankly.
Confortoismyspiritanimal
@Ronnsnow – Aging bodies don’t translate well in CF.
No team is paying a premium for a CF only to move him to the corner. There are plenty of good corner outfielders.
Johnny Baseball
That’s an interesting comment, is it based on speculation? I am pretty sure 5 of the top 10 CFers last year were 31 or older but then again there is no way Marte can be a great CFer for 2 more years.
jim stem
How much of an impact does a terrible pitching staff have on a defender’s numbers?
Put Marte on a good team with good pitchers and major league outfielders next to him and I bet he miraculously has a “rebound year” defensively.
joew
who ever takes wills contract wins. if padres kick in some salary the pirates can absorb it no problem.
imo take him as a reclimation and flip him when he returns to form. up until last year he was fairly good. padres pay ~20m could be do able with the right prospect package. doubt it though.
my understanding is sox are trying to stay under tax treshold, myers wouldnt help that goal if true
Johnny Baseball
I believe Myers to the Pirates is doable but it depends on whether the Padres would make it worth it. I can understand why the Padres top 5 prospects would be off the board when taking on Betts and Prices salary but Marte is only owed 24 million over 2 years. I could understand Gore and Trammell being untouchable and Patino and Abrams are to far away to invest that much trade capital in but the Pirates may be interested in a package of prospects headlined by Campusano and their 34th competitive balance pick in the 2020 draft. The rest of the details about how much money is going back with Myers or how many prospects could be worked out to make it worth it. The Padres have a deep farm system and several LHPers which is another area of need as well as some intriguing low level OF prospects..
ronnsnow
Adding Myers takes the Pirates payroll roughly around where it was last year. There’s no reason they can’t take his contract to improve the prospect return for Marte. But…Bob Nutting.
tiredolddude
Why? Why in the world would the Pirates, in yet another rebuild, do this? You’re too used to dealing with the previous FO, who would go for anything
Daniel Andrews
To take on Myers contract and give up Marte could require 2 of the Padres top 5 or 6 prospects as it’s in the 100M SV range for the Padres and so it will require at least one of them. Amazingly in terms of SV Marte and Betts aren’t that far apart, expect having Betts gives you a comp pick as well, but trying to add Price to that deal gives a team a lot of downside risk and for the Padres to move on that the Red Sox would have to eat some salary to get the picks they want.
If anything a hold up with a Marte trade with the Padres would be dependent on the Padres pursuit of Betts. The Red Sox are trying to clear salary space, but the Padres don’t want to take on a ton of salary as Myers and Hosmer contracts are going to be a thorn in their sides moving forward. If the Sox are pushing Price to the Padres I can’t see Boston getting a deal done without the Pirates being involved which would mean the Pirates would have to take on around 40M per year in almost dead money which can worked down to 30M.
The Padres get Betts
The Red Sox get Marte, Archer, and 1 of the Red Sox Top 5 or 6 plus a lottery ticket
The Pirates get Myers and Price, 1 of the Padres Top 5, 1 Padres Top 7-15, and 2 Red Sox Top 10s. Hoping they can flip Myers and Price.
iRiE-G
Get marte and betts!! Screw it trade our whole farm!! Go padres!!
ronnsnow
This is why fans don’t run ballclubs.
phillyballers
Solution. Trade Hosmer + a mid-level prospect + 18M for Marte. Move Myers to 1st where he belongs.
Pirates have their 1st Baseman set for the next 6 yrs at 15, 15, 15, 13, 13, 13 with the opt-out after 3 years. 14M average for 6 years is pretty good.
Pirates then trade Josh Bell, or they could then flip a cheaper Hosmer.
scogan
Why does everyone forget that Hosmer has a full no trade clause. He’s not going to accept a trade to the Pirates
Deleted Userrr
That’s not the reason he’s not getting traded.
Deleted Userrr
LMAO a mid level prospect and $18m on its own isn’t getting Marte. And you expect them to take Hosmer on top of that? Not a chance.
phillyballers
That is kind of a dumb statement/question by you. Pirates are cheapos. They would certainly take 18M in cash and put it in their pockets. You underestimate cheap greedy owners. Babe Ruth was sold for 25k. Pirates don’t care about winning. Hosmer at 21M is a bad deal, Hosmer at 15M/yr (suggesting he opts out) is less than a qualifying offer.
wordonthestreet
Hosmer is not going to be able to be flipped by the Pirates for anything of real value. He is not good and every team can find an average first baseman.
wordonthestreet
Why would the Pirates or any team want Hosmer as their first baseman for six years?
Heck even the team paying Hosmer does not even want him for next year
aberdeen101
How about no? Pittsburgh isn’t trading their best asset for a middling prospect, an overrated 1B on the decline and 18M.
Deleted Userrr
The Pirates could get more for Marte than a mid-level prospect and $18m. And including Hosmer means the package you suggested isn’t even positive in terms of surplus value.
Oh and there is no way in Hell Hosmer opts out.
iRiE-G
Lets throw hedges in the deal also
wordonthestreet
Your gonna have to throw in something and Hosmer stinks and the trade then only has an average prospect coming with him so the Pirates are not benefitting

Who would be willing to take on Price’s AND Betts’ contract?
Who has the mlb ready talent to replace Betts and Price in Boston?

…or the Yankees or Dodgers. And I highly doubt the Red Sox trade Betts within their own division.
I’m thinking it’s the Dodgers or Padres. If the Padres insist on unloading one of their big contracts, that makes no sense for the Red Sox to unload an effective Price for a bust hitter that will strap them himself.
padreshave32yrstobestdodger1stwswin
Send both Price and Betts to the cheapskate Doyers in July. They’ll offer Boston soda bottlecaps in trade. They’ll still be seating in the losers’ dugout at the end of 2020—it’s in their Doyer Blue nature. Ballclubs from Chavez Latrine always smell it up in October.

This is intriguing as a Braves fan. What about Contreras, Weigel, and Wilson? We could move Inciarte and Duvall to clear spots/salary? Ozuna LF, Marte CF, Acuna RF and use Riley at 3B with no pressure to produce at the plate, which will allow him to take more pitches and stay off of the balls two feet off the plate.
aberdeen101
So, Bryce Wilson, Wilson Contraras and Patrick Weigel? That is fine with me. Covers the big needs for Pittsburgh … C and Pitching.
throwinched10
“Talks have intensified.” That’s intense!
mrpadre19
The Padres aren’t getting Marte AND Betts so their interest in one is probably intensifying the other teams interest.
If the Pirates like the deal the Padres have offered but are holding out for more….they may be pressured to take the deal if they believe they are serious about Betts.
And Vice versa.
Then again…..the Pirates aren’t taking Myers so if the Sox are serious about taking him I could see why talks with the Padres “have cooled”.
Padres would be happy with either player but want to move Myers so….
padreshave32yrstobestdodger1stwswin
Padres don’t need Red Sox scraps. We’re just driving up the price.
scottaz
Mike Hazen and the Dbacks are lying in the weeds. That may be the reason talks have intensified. Padres and Mets will get pushed to the side by the Dbacks. Dbacks have an excellent farm system, like the Padres do, and need a CF, so they are motivated. Hazen has already stated and demonstrated that he will move prospects to get his man. So if the Pirates’ ask has become more realistic, watch for another Hazen swoop out of nowhere.

Mets have a couple of intriguing players. JD Davis, Dominic Smith come to mind as players who could be part of the package headlined by the Mets top prospects.
BartoloHRball
Nimmo’s career #’s are better than “average” given he has offered decent CF defense, all while being jerked around by the mets for playing time AND playing hurt for much of 2019.
Career: 254/.387/.440/.827 127 OPS+
Nimmo: 2020 (proj): .252/.379/.457/.836
Marte: 2020 (proj) .277/.330/.462/.793
Those projections were from Baseball-Reference.com
Here are 2019 comparisons (v. qualified hitters)
127 OPS+ would be T-37 with Josh Donaldson & Joc Peterson
.387OBP would be T-19 with Josh Donaldson & Nolan Arenado.
Nimmo is 3rd for CF for both stats too, as a primary position, behind Trout and Springer.

Horrible ignorant comment. Nimmo at his best is better than marte at his best.
Johnny Baseball
The Mets, Padres & D-Backs all are interested in Marte and also could use some pitching help. Marte could be packaged w/ a pitcher to any of these teams for a package of prospects to fill several of their needs. Each of these teams have interesting prospects Cherington could choose from; Mets have C Alvarez, LHPers Peterson & Szapucki plus ranked SS prospect Gimenez, the Padres have C Campusano, LHPers Weathers & Morejon, INF Marcano & OF Olivares, the D-Backs have C Varsho, RHPers Kelly & Malone, SS Peguero & OFer Patino.
scottaz
Good job Johnny listing some specific prospects. Of these packages, I think the Padres’ package is strongest, followed by the Dbacks, with the Mets’ package far behind those two.
Only correction I would make is that the Dbacks don’t need starting pitchers, they already have 6 strong starters for this year, and 5 others in the wings to cover losses in 2021, and then their prospect pitching depth really matures starting in 2022. So, I don’t think the Dbacks are that interested in trading for a package that includes another starter.

I’m willing to send (at no cost) “I Ain’t Got No Shame” Wil Myers to whoever signs Marte or the Betts/Price twins. That’ll guarantee 3 times over that said team will not win the WS.
windmill_noise_causes_cancer
Send Myers to the Tigers with a high-end bat or 2 and you can have your choice of a couple low-end prospects, Miggy signed ball, Rob Deer game used bat, etc.
Gwynning
That Rob Deer bat might be game used but looks brand new…

Mets please listen to your fans on this one. Nobody wants marte
Dan Hunter
yes we do!
aberdeen101
LOL … because average to mediocre Brandon Nimmrod is the answer. You have nothing I want as a Pirate fan.

Alvarez Mauricio and Davis

first of all if MARTE was worth anything to any other teams he would have been gone before this. And Nimmo is as good offensively. He also made the top ten best center fielder according to the shredder.
metsie1
I can’t see anyone giving up a haul of prospects for Betts who will be a FA after next season AND is owed 27M this year. Boston missed the boat last off-season.
Marte is a declining 31 year old former PED abuser. He will soon be a corner OF. His CF days are coming to an end. His return will not be as great as some Pirate fans envision.
aberdeen101
He had his best career year without the use of PEDs, so how is he declining? I wish people would seriously think before posting.
metsie1
Defense is declining. Do you even watch baseball?
jtkuch
Do you? Or do you just read defensive metrics like bible…

Padres:
* Marte
* mid range prospect or comp pick.
Pirates:
Myers, Padres pay a third of the salary until option year.
Morejon or Weathers
Campusano
Olivares
Lower End P2BNL pt Int Bonus money
If the Pirates take on more of Myers money then Patino should be on the table.
“should be” close. Campusano and one of their better pitching prospects are a must. who that pitcher is would depend on how much money the pirates take on.. after that pretty negotiable.
The biggest issue from the pirates side is that none of the prospects will likely be starting out of spring until 2022, if they make it at all. But if Myers rebounds.. around that time the pirates could use him to as a big piece then OR flip him for needed positions.
Johnny Baseball
I think that is a decent package for Marte. It would make more sense if the Pirates were to receive the comp pick and send some international bonus money to the Padres or a pitcher and the PTBNL is Tucipata Marcano or Jeisson Rosario. The Padres may also be interested in Kevin Kramer to platoon w/ Profar in case he does not fulfill there expectations they can have Kramer to fill in until Abrams is ready.

Hey Joe W.: Like my friend Willie Wonka (AJ Preller) told the kid (Pirates) and his grandpa (Red Sox), “You Get NOTHING!!!

Scottaz
I agree w/ the ranking of preferences and adding Marte to the Padres would give them a 2 year window and Marte, Pham, Grisham & Margot would be a solid OF. The D-Backs may not need SP but one of Kela, Feliz or Crick would provide them depth in the pen. Another thing the Padres and Mets have to offer that the Mets don’t is a competitive balance pick in the 2020 draft..
scottaz
Johnny, my other thought about the Dbacks offering Varsho is that he might not be the best fit for the a Pirates. They need/want a catcher. The jury is still out on Varsho sticking behind the plate. His bat is virtually ML ready, but his catching skills still need to go a ways. So the Padres catcher prospect is a better fit in a trade with the Pirates.
mattmooney33
The Pirates will trade Marte to the Padres for cash to put towards more bobble head giveaways through out the season.
Joegio
Gee mattmooney the pirates have a bobblehead of you. But the face looks like your posterior
bjhaas1977
Mookie Metts
army123456
Pirates freaking suck. Bob needs to spend money. Cellar dwellers if they trade him or not.
mario crosby
Teams who are interested in Marte will just wait on Pirates owner Bob Nutting to break into a cold sweat when he cuts the first few paychecks for Marte. He will do like he has done in the past, order his puppets to get rid of Marte in a salary dump and try to sell it as the acquisition of young promising talent. Just wait Nutting out and a team will get Marte for three fringe minor league players and a bag of balls.
jim stem
What his comment really means is that he doesn’t want to upset Cespedes. If Cespedes pouts or phones in his spring training, the Mets won’t be able to trade him before he gets hurt.
extreme113
Why go after Marte when Cohen infused $$ will allow the METS to pursue Mookie next year?
Shrutefarm
The Pirates were playing hardball (no pun intended) with trading Vazquez last year too. They wanted a king’s ransom for him. They hung on to him too long and now have nothing to show for it.
Are they doing the same thing with Marte, a known PED violator, and thinking he is worth more than what he is? What are the chances the Pirates actual contend for a playoff spot this year?
tiredolddude
Or is it a case that MLB teams believe that it’s meet the new boss, same as the old boss, as they still work for a stingy owner and will simply give players away?
You’re right about Vazquez.
And truthfully, I have to think MLB GMs know that Marte is a sucker for a curveball in the dirt and has an occasional on/off switch where hustle is concerned
But he has speed and a good arm. He’d be a nice addition to a team on the brink.
Just hope that if trade him, they get *something* back
wordonthestreet
Many players chase curveballs in the dirt not just Marte
wordonthestreet
They were not looking for the kings ransom for Vazquez
Marner#16
Wordonthestreet,
Wasn’t talking to you so stick your nose in someone else’s business Pinocchio!
alproof
BVW continues to be an idiot; lets Marte slip through his fingers (AZ gets him for nothing), and he signs another zero minor leaguer.
MetsFan22
Mets don’t need marte.. especially for what pirates asked from the Mets.
