Latest On Pirates’ Starling Marte Trade Talks

By Connor Byrne | January 24, 2020 at 8:21pm CDT

January 24, 8:00pm: In comments to the media today, Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen threw some cold water on the idea of a significant move to change the complexion of the team’s outfield mix, as MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo was among those to cover. But he didn’t exactly slam the door shut.

When queried about the team’s plans in the outfield, Van Wagenen says he doesn’t want to “disrupt” the existing “chemistry” and “culture where people buy into one another.” In the money quote that has drawn the most attention, Van Wagenen said he doesn’t “see a deal that’s going to disrupt that environment.”

At the same time, Van Wagenen says he’s open-minded to changing the cast. “If there’s an opportunity to continue to improve our roster, we’ll explore it,” he says, “but our aggressiveness right now is focused on getting ready for Spring Training with the players we have.” It’s a bit unclear just what it means to aggressively prepare to open camp. What does seem evident from this comment is that the Mets (quite understandably) prefer to focus public energy on the existing roster … but aren’t ruling out further moves.

10:00am: The Pirates’ talks involving Marte have “intensified,” tweets MLB Network’s Jon Heyman, who lists the Padres and Mets as potential suitors, though it’s worth noting of course that the report comes just the morning after Lin indicated that talks with San Diego have “cooled.” Furthermore, SNY’s Andy Martino tweets that the Mets and Pirates are “pretty far apart” in their talks on Marte at the moment.

January 23: The Padres have their sights set on on a bona fide superstar, Red Sox right fielder Mookie Betts, and they’ve also been connected to Pirates center fielder Starling Marte in trade rumors this offseason. At this point, though, it doesn’t appear a Marte deal will come together between the Padres and Pirates. The teams’ talks “have cooled, likely over the asking price,” Dennis Lin of The Athletic writes (subscription link).

Marte’s not the player Betts is (few are), but that’s not to say he isn’t plenty valuable in his own right. In fact, the 31-year-old has been one of the majors’ top center fielders throughout his career. Marte totaled at least 3.0 fWAR for the sixth time in his seven full seasons last year, posted his second straight 20-20 campaign (23 home runs, 25 stolen bases) and slashed .295/.342/.503 over 586 plate appearances.

Despite Marte’s perennial effectiveness, there is a case that the Pirates and new general manager Ben Cherington should sell him sooner than later. Marte’s under control for a maximum of just two more years – a pair of seasons that don’t figure to wind up as playoff-caliber efforts for the club. And though Marte’s control is dwindling, his affordability should only boost his trade value. He’s due a reasonable $11.5MM this year and could then make a similarly affordable $12.5MM by way of a club option in 2021; that’s if Marte’s employer doesn’t buy him out for $1MM instead, but the odds of that happening appear quite slim right now.

There are several teams that would make sense as Marte suitors, as Jeff Todd of MLBTR explored this week. The Padres, who have been busy in the outfield this winter (they’ve added Tommy Pham and Trent Grisham, subtracted Hunter Renfroe and would like to get rid of Wil Myers’ contract), are one of them. So far, however, it doesn’t look as if San Diego has made much progress in trying to pry Marte out of Pittsburgh.

Red Sox are willing to take on Myers contract Pirates are not.

Betts and Price make a ton of sense for the Padres and putting Myers at 1st makes tons of sense for the Red Sox.

If red Sox are willing to take all of Myers contract then Abrams Morejon Miller Baez Bolanos and Vosler could be the prospect haul the Red Sox get. Mlb ready assets and Boston clears mookies arb salary.

If red Sox take less than 80% of Myers contract bet abrams comes off the table and is replaced by like Quantril

The Mets need a backup catcher who is able to hit at least 230 ish. If they hired Russell Martin they would have a catcher who has successfully played in NY, still hits a good deal above 230, plus has some power too. Additionally, Martin calls a great game, frames well, is a good defensive catcher, and can occasionally throw guys out. He would be a HUGE improvement over Nido who only hits 180 at best, Nido has not thrown runners out successfully in 2019, so there is no reason to believe he will either be able to hit or thrown in MLB in 2020. Brodie, HIRE MARTIN NOW!!!

6 guys for 1 year of Betts, playing for a wild card spot? If Preller does that then he should be fired immediately instead of after the season.

You need to add more guys if myers is part of the return.

I think boston would be happy with fewer prospects if myers stays in SD.

You need to remember myers has ZERO value, and is a negative aspect in any deal. To move myers you need to add talent.

This would be two trades in one – buy betts for 3 prospects, plus pay prospects to get rid of myers.

The suggested haul here is very steep and I highly doubt will happen. Mookie has only 1 year of control for a team who still may not contend. Maybe as a rental if they make a playoff push.

I don’t see the trade for Marte happening but I do see a trade with the Sox, Betts for three prospects (not including Gore or Patino ) and Myers with SD eating 40% of Myers contract for the next two yrs. This would put the Friars in the playoffs in 2020 and gives their farm system another year to mature for the Bigs in 2021.. Yes its a one yr rental but making the playoffs would be someone keeping their job the GM AJ and would bring some fire to San Diego..

It’s a valid question regarding Marte’s defense. But one may also have to ask how of this is related to poor pitching or even limited team mates around him?

How are defensive metrics really computed and how do they translate to actually onfield wins and losses?

If you have a pitching staff getting lit up because they are missing targets, throwing meatballs, giving up line drives in the gaps and balls bouncing off walls, how does that translate to a defender’s numbers?

For instance, can you modify Marte’s numbers to, let’s say, what if he played center behind Verlander, Cole and the Astros’ staff?

On the flip side? What would the best centerfielder’s numbers lol like if he played for the 2019 Pirates?

I think numbers DO lie when you refuse to apply the human element. Would another +5 war hitter have made the Phillies an 86 win team? I highly doubt that player would have made up for all those 5 run losses and that pitching staff.

Throw your defensive numbers to the win if you have a pitching staff that gets lit up or not able to pitch to defensive alignments.

Marte really has only played 2 years in center. Cutch was in center with Marte in left. They were going to move Marte to CF in 2017, then he got the PED suspension in early May. The last two years were the first he was actually a full time major league center fielder.

Kinda like that huge lead that the Leafs blew in the third period of that Game 7 to the Bruins years ago that was just named the best NHL game of the 2010’s.

Is that the consensus among Leaf fans, as well?

That that was the best game of the 2010’s? When the Leafs blew that huge lead in the third period to lose to the Bruins in that Game 7?

Funny how they mentioned Marte’s perennial great #’s at CF, with 2019 being a major falloff. McCutcheon played CF for nearly all his career in CF for the Pirates. 3 years ago, Marte moved to CF, but Cutch moved back when Marte was suspended for 1/2 the season. So that leaves 2 years in CF for Marte, one good one defensively & one falloff. So 1 year makes you perennial. He’s fast, covers a lot of ground, & has a cannon arm. He also makes bonehead plays. He’s not elite in CF, but close.

In honor of MLK here is my if I had a dream. Pirates get Betts, Price and 8m a year for 3 years for Polanco, Craig and Olivia. Keep Marte and make a run for it. If it falls apart trade at the deadline and start the major rebuild. This would put the payroll at around 100m. They have been there before.

That’s an interesting comment, is it based on speculation? I am pretty sure 5 of the top 10 CFers last year were 31 or older but then again there is no way Marte can be a great CFer for 2 more years.

How much of an impact does a terrible pitching staff have on a defender’s numbers?

Put Marte on a good team with good pitchers and major league outfielders next to him and I bet he miraculously has a “rebound year” defensively.

who ever takes wills contract wins. if padres kick in some salary the pirates can absorb it no problem.

imo take him as a reclimation and flip him when he returns to form. up until last year he was fairly good. padres pay ~20m could be do able with the right prospect package. doubt it though.

my understanding is sox are trying to stay under tax treshold, myers wouldnt help that goal if true

I believe Myers to the Pirates is doable but it depends on whether the Padres would make it worth it. I can understand why the Padres top 5 prospects would be off the board when taking on Betts and Prices salary but Marte is only owed 24 million over 2 years. I could understand Gore and Trammell being untouchable and Patino and Abrams are to far away to invest that much trade capital in but the Pirates may be interested in a package of prospects headlined by Campusano and their 34th competitive balance pick in the 2020 draft. The rest of the details about how much money is going back with Myers or how many prospects could be worked out to make it worth it. The Padres have a deep farm system and several LHPers which is another area of need as well as some intriguing low level OF prospects..

To take on Myers contract and give up Marte could require 2 of the Padres top 5 or 6 prospects as it’s in the 100M SV range for the Padres and so it will require at least one of them. Amazingly in terms of SV Marte and Betts aren’t that far apart, expect having Betts gives you a comp pick as well, but trying to add Price to that deal gives a team a lot of downside risk and for the Padres to move on that the Red Sox would have to eat some salary to get the picks they want.

If anything a hold up with a Marte trade with the Padres would be dependent on the Padres pursuit of Betts. The Red Sox are trying to clear salary space, but the Padres don’t want to take on a ton of salary as Myers and Hosmer contracts are going to be a thorn in their sides moving forward. If the Sox are pushing Price to the Padres I can’t see Boston getting a deal done without the Pirates being involved which would mean the Pirates would have to take on around 40M per year in almost dead money which can worked down to 30M.

          The Padres get Betts
The Red Sox get Marte, Archer, and 1 of the Red Sox Top 5 or 6 plus a lottery ticket
The Pirates get Myers and Price, 1 of the Padres Top 5, 1 Padres Top 7-15, and 2 Red Sox Top 10s. Hoping they can flip Myers and Price.

Solution. Trade Hosmer + a mid-level prospect + 18M for Marte. Move Myers to 1st where he belongs.

Pirates have their 1st Baseman set for the next 6 yrs at 15, 15, 15, 13, 13, 13 with the opt-out after 3 years. 14M average for 6 years is pretty good.

Pirates then trade Josh Bell, or they could then flip a cheaper Hosmer.

That is kind of a dumb statement/question by you. Pirates are cheapos. They would certainly take 18M in cash and put it in their pockets. You underestimate cheap greedy owners. Babe Ruth was sold for 25k. Pirates don’t care about winning. Hosmer at 21M is a bad deal, Hosmer at 15M/yr (suggesting he opts out) is less than a qualifying offer.

If Price is flipped with him, who replaces him on the mound?

Who might be willing to take on Betts for just one year only to lose him via free agency at the end of the season?

Who would be willing to take on Price’s AND Betts’ contract?

Who has the mlb ready talent to replace Betts and Price in Boston?

The Padres aren’t getting Marte AND Betts so their interest in one is probably intensifying the other teams interest.
If the Pirates like the deal the Padres have offered but are holding out for more….they may be pressured to take the deal if they believe they are serious about Betts.
    And Vice versa.
Then again…..the Pirates aren’t taking Myers so if the Sox are serious about taking him I could see why talks with the Padres “have cooled”.
Padres would be happy with either player but want to move Myers so….

Dbacks have an excellent farm system, like the Padres do, and need a CF, so they are motivated. Hazen has already stated and demonstrated that he will move prospects to get his man. So if the Pirates’ ask has become more realistic, watch for another Hazen swoop out of nowhere.

Nimmo’s career #’s are better than “average” given he has offered decent CF defense, all while being jerked around by the mets for playing time AND playing hurt for much of 2019.

      Career: 254/.387/.440/.827 127 OPS+

      Nimmo: 2020 (proj): .252/.379/.457/.836
      Marte: 2020 (proj) .277/.330/.462/.793

      Those projections were from Baseball-Reference.com

Here are 2019 comparisons (v. qualified hitters)
127 OPS+ would be T-37 with Josh Donaldson & Joc Peterson
.387OBP would be T-19 with Josh Donaldson & Nolan Arenado.

Nimmo is 3rd for CF for both stats too, as a primary position, behind Trout and Springer.

Marte could be packaged w/ a pitcher to any of these teams for a package of prospects to fill several of their needs. Each of these teams have interesting prospects Cherington could choose from; Mets have C Alvarez, LHPers Peterson & Szapucki plus ranked SS prospect Gimenez, the Padres have C Campusano, LHPers Weathers & Morejon, INF Marcano & OF Olivares, the D-Backs have C Varsho, RHPers Kelly & Malone, SS Peguero & OFer Patino.

Good job Johnny listing some specific prospects. Of these packages, I think the Padres’ package is strongest, followed by the Dbacks, with the Mets’ package far behind those two.

Only correction I would make is that the Dbacks don’t need starting pitchers, they already have 6 strong starters for this year, and 5 others in the wings to cover losses in 2021, and then their prospect pitching depth really matures starting in 2022. So, I don’t think the Dbacks are that interested in trading for a package that includes another starter.

    Padres:

    * Marte
    * mid range prospect or comp pick.

    Pirates:

Myers, Padres pay a third of the salary until option year.
    Morejon or Weathers
    Campusano
    Olivares
Lower End P2BNL pt Int Bonus money

If the Pirates take on more of Myers money then Patino should be on the table.

“should be” close. Campusano and one of their better pitching prospects are a must. who that pitcher is would depend on how much money the pirates take on.. after that pretty negotiable.

The biggest issue from the pirates side is that none of the prospects will likely be starting out of spring until 2022, if they make it at all. But if Myers rebounds.. around that time the pirates could use him to as a big piece then OR flip him for needed positions.

Johnny, my other thought about the Dbacks offering Varsho is that he might not be the best fit for the a Pirates. They need/want a catcher. The jury is still out on Varsho sticking behind the plate. His bat is virtually ML ready, but his catching skills still need to go a ways. So the Padres catcher prospect is a better fit in a trade with the Pirates.
