Quick Hits: Young, Torre, Int’l Prospects, Leon, Franco

By Mark Polishuk | February 6, 2020 at 6:51pm CDT

Major League Baseball announced some changes within its baseball operations department, including the hirings of the newly-retired Gregor Blanco and Nick Hundley.  Some other familiar names will be taking on new roles, as head of baseball operations Joe Torre will now be a special assistant to commissioner Rob Manfred.  Taking over Torre’s former job as the head of the ops department is former right-hander Chris Young, whose new title is senior VP of on-field operations, initiatives and strategy.  This portfolio covers, as per the league’s press release, “issues that affect play on the field, including oversight of umpiring, playing rules and regulations, on-field standards and discipline, pace of play and other special projects.”  Young has worked for the league since May 2018, coming on the heels of a 17-year pro career that included 1297 2/3 innings pitched over parts of 13 MLB seasons.

More from around the baseball world….

  • Some of the top outfield prospects in the 2020-21 international draft class are profiled by Baseball America’s Ben Badler, who also details which teams are expected to sign these players on July 2.  The Reds, Pirates, Red Sox, and Rangers are all thought to have seven-figure bonuses lined up for four players from the Dominican Republic, though the Astros are reportedly ready to pay what may be the biggest bonus given to any player in the 2020-21 class — a deal in the neighborhood of $4MM to 21-year-old Cuban outfielder Pedro Leon.  Because of his age, Leon is already eligible to sign, though he will wait until the opening of the next July 2 window because most teams have exhausted most or all of their funds from their 2019-20 international signing pools.  The int’l market will take on added importance for the Astros over the next two years, as the club’s pipeline of top young talent will be limited after losing their top two picks in both the 2020 and 2021 amateur drafts as part of their punishment for the sign-stealing scandal.
  • The Royals didn’t waste time in their pursuit of Maikel Franco, as assistant GM Rene Francisco called Franco the day after the Phillies non-tendered the third baseman, Lynn Worthy of the Kansas City Star writes.  Franco and the Royals agreed to a one-year, $2.95MM deal within a few weeks’ time of Francisco’s early expression of interest, and Franco has since been diligently working with Royals coaches to overhaul his approach at the plate.  Rather than the grounder-heavy results that defined so much of his stint in Philadelphia, Franco is putting a particular focus on getting the ball in the air.

Losing top 2 picks in rule 4 draft is a whole lot stiffer than super wildcards in any IFA where many (most) are nothing but 16-17YO kids not even been to much schooling, just trained by buscoes, who are 100% out for themselves.

Yeah Houston hasn’t gained any talent from the international market. Not Yordan, not Altuve, nothing

They should have been banned from signing international guys from multiple years too. They stole a title, nearly a 2nd, and for 3 years screwed teams playing fairly. There’s no “too harsh”

I was advocating that MLB should do a player dispersal on all its starting players spread across all of the other major league teams. Let the “Trashcanners” rebuild from scratch. To allow the Astros some semblance of competitiveness let the other clubs disperse some of their marginal players off their 40 man rosters to fill the “Trashcans” vacant positions.

I wish Franco great success and I think he’ll enjoy it given the right coaching. Regrettably Franco’s tenure with the Phillies was not blessed with good coaching. Actually the Phillies minor league system under Amaro and Klentak has been devoid of good coaching and developmental strategy.

There is still time before the season starts. The league can still hand out punishments for the astros for the international draft and I think the league will come down on the Red Sox for their involvement with sign stealing. Just because Cora was let go, does not let the Sox off the hook. I can’t imagine what these Astro’s games will be like. Will fans throw trash onto the fields in protest? I’m dreading going to an astros game and constantly hearing banging on trash cans… not good for baseball. Honestly it can go either way and I am a baseball fan.. not just a Yankee fan.

Then perhaps they shouldn’t be trying to salve their injured pride by beating their chest in public forums about how great their team is. I get your point about not bashing the fans for their team’s actions. But some of them, quite obviously, deserve to be called out. And, though I have not engaged in it myself, I certainly understand fans of other teams taking it all a bit personally and lashing out. Especially fans of some of those teams who feel cheated of titles and WS rings.

Oh seriously shut up!!!!!! Im tired of anyone even having an opinion that would somewhat support wjat the Astros did…. They @$!@d up!! They assumed nobody would find out.. No different than the PED era… All or most of the teams we root for habe had a falling from grace due to embarrassing situations.. You have to conceide defeat sometimes and have humility… As a cards fan, do you know how embarrassed we were because of some low level exec hacking Astros email?????? Forrest damn Gump wasnt that stupid!! Although, in hindsight, he COULD have been googling “well made trash cans” and poof! In just saying you can defend the Astros, Barry Bonds,McGwire, Clemens or even the Latino lover from the Pirates (Vasquez?) The point is if you are an Astros fan, you should be mad at your TEAM!! Thay are the ones that embarrased their fans

If anything I feel sorry for fans of other teams because you guys post negatively on every Astro related link and sit on your high horse like the Astros were the only team doing this. It’s amazing that fans can bury their heads in the sand on a topic like this, and live life so ignorantly.

So no, I’m not mad at the Astros for doing what everyone else did. Nor am I embarrassed that the Astros got caught. I honestly couldn’t care less. They have been one of the best teams in baseball the last three years, so what is there to be upset about?

As a Pirates fan, I have been watching the new GM Ben Cherington operating different than Neil Huntington. We still have the same worst owner in baseball–granted. It does appear though that we will be landing a front line international player or maybe two with the money he has been accruing. The only way for them to get better is to drastically scout better, draft better and develop better. People hate it as all patience is gone but I’m tired of AAAA players. It’s time to really build an organization from the ground up the right way.

Astros players should have been suspended like PED users. Cheating is cheating and should have consequences to those who did it. I feel bad for Hinch — he actually tried to stop it. But if a PED violation (even accidental) gets you 81 games, isn’t intentionally cheating worth at least a month off?

PED suspensions did not happen until they were collectively bargained with the MLBPA. If you want suspensions for using cameras to illegally steal signs then take it up with the MLBPA. There were many PED users, including Canseco, McGwire and Bonds that were never suspended.

Punishment too light. If you’re a team and you need one player to get over the hump you sign the player, lose a draft pick, and are usually stuck with a Votto to Myers/Price type contract that’s unmovable. You still do all that and consider it worth it to win a World Series. Astros should be severely limited at best in IBM/signings. I think they should extend it to three years especially if not going after any players. Honestly I’d suspend everyone who was on the team ten or fifteen games and make them forfeit them.
