Red Sox To Remove “Interim” Tag From Ron Roenicke’s Title

By Steve Adams | April 22, 2020 at 4:16pm CDT

The Red Sox will soon announce that they’re removing the “interim” tag from interim manager Ron Roenicke’s title, ESPN’s Buster Olney tweets. He’ll serve as the “permanent” manager for the 2020 season, assuming one is played.

It’s an expected move and one that’s largely a formality. At the time Roenicke was named Alex Cora’s replacement, multiple reports indicated that the organization would remove the “interim” qualifier if and when the league’s investigation cleared Roenicke of any wrongdoing in the 2018 sign-stealing allegations that had been brought for against the club. Today’s announcement from commissioner Rob Manfred, which punished only one current Red Sox employee, will now bring about that anticipated title modification.

Of course, Roenicke is still signed for only the 2020 season, and his future beyond that is unclear. He’d previously served as Cora’s bench coach, so if the organization opts to bring in a new skipper, it’s possible Roenicke could return to that role or move on altogether. Notably, there appears to be nothing (outside of what would figure to be enormously negative public relations pushback) standing in the way of the Red Sox simply re-hiring Cora for the 2021 season. His league-imposed ban only runs through the 2020 playoffs and Manfred made sure to emphasize that the punishment stemmed only from his wrongdoings while serving as the Astros’ bench coach in 2017 — not for anything he did with Boston.

The commissioner’s office, located in New York City, is heavily influenced by the owner and front office personnel of the Yankees. They had to find something to save face after investigating the Red Sox needlessly. As I read the commissioner’s decision, he found nothing to remotely suggest that the Red Sox players on the field cheated throughout the entire 2018 season including the playoffs and World Series. The Red Sox players, all 40 who were on the roster in 2018, deserve an apology.

they had very good reason to investigate and there is no reason to agrue with their results and who bore the blunt of the blame.

The question is not did the 2009 Yankees use steroids, but how many did not? Probably fewer did not use than did. Texieria, A-wrong, …

Manfred should have been honest and simply said there was nothing bad enough to receive punishment for.

It is quite obvious that the Red Sox are cheaters. The team should be sold to the Mexican league and Fenway made into a homeless shelter to feed the needy.

No apology is necessary here, what is, Red Sox fans need to go by the commissioner a beer for hooking them up BIG TIME!! I can’t imagine how fans are so easily fooled. People…. Don’t you get it, baseball can’t afford another world series champion that cheated so what’s the best thing to do oh, well you know!

I think they should bring Cora back in 2021. he was a great manager and handled the press tremendously in Boston – which is no small task. And with this investigation the findings (official statement wise anyway) pretty conclusively clear Cora of any wrongdoing while manager of the Red Sox. So given that… he should get another shot to manager once he’s served his punishment for his role in the Astros situation.

It’s laughable how Red Sox fans think they’re any different than the Yankees.

They both throw a lot of money around to paper over holes like the Red Sox lack of a catcher and the Yankees with their strategy of getting ridiculous performances from guys who hasn’t done anything in years like Maybin and Tauchman.

When Boston fans just stop being innocent that they don’t cheat at all. Doesn’t matter if you get cheated you get punished. But to say that the operator of the cameras relay the signs to the “players “ on 2nd to tell their “teammates” in the box what was decoded is cheating. There’s no gamesmanship in it. When Mlb limited the “how many times you have to visit the mound”, made these cheating scandals much easier for teams with that replay room right there in the dugout. They need to either remove that rule or take away replay room to somewhere a Mlb official is at just no access to the players. No tv/monitors between the locker room and dugout. Only technology should be in dugout is the phones for bullpen and replay. Because this game is getting out of hand because this commissioner just want to “speed up “ the game.
