Latest On Teams With Positive Coronavirus Tests

By TC Zencka | June 27, 2020 at 8:43am CDT

After multiple members of the Texas Rangers organization tested positive for COVID-19, some employees told ESPN that they “fear for their health and hope the organization will allow employees to work from home after feeling pressure to come into the office,” per ESPN’s Jeff Passan. That’s a troubling revelation coming out of Texas, and a reminder of the power that employers yield over their workers during this difficult time. The Rangers, of course, will have the opportunity to reassess their work-from-home policies in light of these positive tests – and hopefully do so. Given unemployment rates around the country, those with highly-coveted positions within sports franchises are in a difficult position should they disagree with their employers in terms of readiness to return to work. None of the Rangers’ positive tests belonged to players, coaches, or baseball personnel, per Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Teams generally face less public scrutiny with how they handle non-baseball-personnel staff, so let’s see how a couple other teams are handling confirmed positive tests…

  • The Brewers are newly among those clubs with positive COVID-19 tests within the organization, writes Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. Many of those who tested positive were asymptomatic, but apparently not all of them. It’s unclear at this time if those positive tests were from staff members or players. Regardless, the Brewers are forging ahead, set to bring a group of 45 players to compete for the eventual 30-man regular-season roster. The rest of the 60-man roster will train at the team’s Class A facility in Appleton, Wisconsin. Players will face intake testing for COVID-19 as they arrive at team facilities.
  • The Indians have had players test positive from their homes, the team facility in Arizona, and from the Dominican Republic, per The Athletic’s Zack Meisel. Team President Chris Antonetti says that the cases have been isolated and there have not been any large-scale breakouts. Interestingly, some staff members have decided to sit out the season, though no players within the organization have as of yet decided to abstain from play. Clearly, the concerns are real across the league, and it’s up to teams to work with their staff and players to make sure everyone feels safe heading into this truncated season. The players face the most visibility, but there are obviously many more employees from every team who will face increased risk in the coming months now that baseball is coming back.

You’re right, the sheer number of positive tests are attributable to additional testing. The yardstick that Governor Abbott of Texas spoke about yesterday, is that the percentage of positive tests had increased to 11%+ in Texas. Hospitalizations in Dallas county have increased 80% since June 1. The main focus is the rise in hospitalizations, as positive tests and hospitalizations are indeed mutually exclusive.

The focus is on moving the goalposts.

          > the sheer number of positive tests are attributable to additional testing… positive tests had increased to 11%+ in Texas

In Ontario, Canada (14.7 million people), expanded testing has resulted in positive tests of less than half a percent.

Didn’t mean to come off as denying the seriousness at all. If people would just follow a few simple rules, masks, distance, etc, the economy could safely get back up to speed. Glad to hear the success Ontario is having.

Wait until an older manager, coach, clubhouse person gets it or until the virus gets passed on to an older relative/friend or a friend’s relative/friend, etc. never mind that group of youngsters who developed unique symptoms a few of which died. We also are just assuming there is no latent issue down the road awaiting those already exposed. Sadly many will feel the concern has been exaggerated until it affects someone they know. In NY, I personally knew of four deaths ranging in ages from 57 to 90+. One was a mentor, another a spouse of a friend and the other two business contacts.

You are a monster. You make it sound like that 0.5% is expendable solely so you can be entertained. 0.5% doesn’t sound like that much until you realize that is actually a 1 in 200 chance of death and that doesn’t include the people that are being permanently disabled due to the disease. And you say fear mongering, when you consider how contagious this disease is, a 1 in 200 chance of death is pretty scary in and of itself.

The thing not being talked about are the often long term effects of covid on those with underlying conditions. Conditions that many have. Even if nobody dies, what happens if a player, coach, or staff member contracts covid and has their career deterred because of it?

With cases continuing to spike (and hospitalizations on the rise) playing sports seems like an awfully bad idea.

Of course, the reason we’re in this dilemma is because so many people were like MLBTR commenters and were willfully in denial of a real problem, and didn’t take the necessary steps to curb the virus.

Long-term effects are nearly impossible to detect right now and this is so new, but there’s already reports out with continued cases of mostly lung issues, also kidney complications, PTSD, and now neurological issues ranging from: headaches, loss of smell; to strokes, seizures and aphasia (ability to speak).

The main thing to understand is that even surviving this it will most likely wreak havoc on your organs, possibly irreparably. But again, these are from continued cases and new reports are coming out every week globally.

Teams and umpires will do a mass protest before the game, stand close together, then play. Science shows protesting without social distancing can’t spread the virus.

Looting, vandalizing and taking down statues outside the stadium is possible. We’ll have to ask the experts on that.

Just about everyone will eventually test positive. That does NOT correlate in any measurable manner to deaths. A huge % of deaths can be attributed to sheer stupidity by governors and of people themselves. Be smart and follow the guidelines we’ve all heard a zillion times, but live your life.

You’re missing the obvious point. Not everyone will necessarily turn positive. If a vaccine is found this year or next, a huge portion of the population will still not have contracted the disease. The more people you can delay getting it prior to having cures, vaccines, and other effective support systems in place, saves substantial number of lives.

Just because an employee feels pressured to be in the office doesn’t mean pressure was applied. Maybe it was or maybe it wasn’t. Some people feel guilt when there isn’t a reason. I told my employees they could work from home or come to the office. Some feel guilty for not coming in. That’s their choice.

“That’s a troubling revelation coming out of Texas, and a reminder of the power that employers yield over their workers during this difficult time.” That statement is a massive leap and generalization.

Employers have immense power at all times. And the stress and anxiety is just that much more with all that’s going on. Once again, this is a LIFE AND DEATH matter.
