Mets Sign Juan Lagares, Brian Dozier

By Jeff Todd | July 22, 2020 at 12:50pm CDT

The Mets have struck minor-league deals with outfielder Juan Lagares and infielder Brian Dozier, according to reports from Deesha Thosar of the New York Post (Twitter link) and MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo (via Twitter). Both will join the 60-man player pool.

It’s certainly an interesting mix of new additions for the New York club. Both players ended up back on the open market after they failed to stick with the Padres. Each has a history in the division.

Lagares has still yet to suit up for a team other than the Mets for regular season action. The 31-year-old spent seven seasons with the team but departed over the winter. Now, he’ll take up a spot on the depth chart but likely won’t have an opportunity in the majors other than as a fill-in player. Lagares owns a .254/.297/.361 slash in over two thousand career plate appearances.

As for Dozier, he’s fresh off of a season with the NL East-rival Nationals. The veteran second baseman turned in a useful .238/.340/.430 batting line over 482 plate appearances, but was largely displaced late in the season. He is now several seasons removed from his days as a star slugger with the Twins but still looks to be a nice insurance policy for the Mets.

Welcome back welcome back welcome back. We all know Lagares is gifted in the field, just his bat leaves much to be desired

He’s horrible. If he winds up stepping into the batter’s box at any time this season, that means the Mets are in trouble.

He’s not THAT bad. So many talking up Puig and Adams as if they’re middle of the order bats, but Lagares getting an at bat is a disgrace? We know he’s not a good hitter, but c’mon.

Puig and Adams are twice the hitters Lagares is and that’s not an overstatement.

That’s true. But the Mets have a bunch of hitters way better than both and we probably wanted more CF defense. We don’t need more corned guys.

First of all, to say Adams and Puig are twice as good as Lagares is literally an overstatement. Secondly, yes, they are quite better but not so much so as to justify the contradiction of praising them whilst damning him. If Matt Adams can bat fifth, Lagares can occasionally get a plate appearance without it being a travesty, is what I’m saying.

I’d rather have Puig roaming CF. Lagares simply got progressively worse and is not a major leaguer anymore.

I don’t want either getting significant playing tine as they are both scrap heap guys, but Puig in center would be a disaster. My point is, their values are not far apart, Juan fields better, Puig’s bat is slightly better, neither should be a major player on a winning team.

He’s had a few big Mets moments. He’s not dislikable (see Cano).

Should sign Puig when he’s cleared and cut Lagares

Brian Dozier signing means that the Mets are now 99 percent certain they got 8 plate appearances from Jed Lowrie for their $20 million. See ya, Jed. We hardly knew ya.

I was thinking the exact same thing. There was absolutely no other reason to sign Dozier. Lowrie will be the biggest waste of money since Bobby Bonilla

Both are decent pickups. Dozier has some pop and Lagares is Gary Pettis with a am even worse bat.

Sure. I mean, picking up Padre’s leftovers is always a sign of a great team.

The Mets are clearly better than the Padres so I don’t get your point…. are the Braves bad bc they picked up Adams?? No.

Why dozier? Are we being gifted with an early Christmas present and they found a sucker, im sorry, a team for cano?….

Nah, just depth. It would take Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and a team of ten unicorns working together to get anyone to take Cano right now or any time this season.

The virus could strike anyone, some depth will be essential. Especially outfield defensive types. Only Marisnick is a near gold glove type and he is battling ham string issues.
