The Braves further solidified the back of their bullpen Thursday, announcing the signing of former Padres closer Robert Suarez on a three-year, $45MM contract. Suarez, a client of Primo Sports Group, became a free agent at season’s end when he opted out of the final two years and $16MM on his five-year contract with San Diego. He’ll be paid $13MM in 2026 and $16MM in both 2027 and 2028, per the team. There are reportedly no deferrals in the contract. Atlanta designated lefty Ryan Rolison for assignment to open a spot on the 40-man roster (more on that move here).
The 34-year-old Suarez (35 in March) went directly from Mexico to Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball late last decade and, after establishing himself as one of the top relievers in NPB, has broken out as a top-tier reliever in the majors. Originally signed on a two-year deal with the Padres, he opted out after one year and inked a five-year, $46MM extension that afforded him another opt-out provision after the third year, which he took last month.
Now Atlanta-bound, Suarez has consistently posted quality numbers in high-leverage spots for the Friars. Dating back to his 2022 MLB debut, he’s posted a 2.91 ERA with a 26.5% strikeout rate and 7.6% walk rate in 210 innings. Suarez sits just under 99 mph with his four-seamer and complements the pitch with a changeup that got great results in ’22-’23 but has been hit hard the past two seasons. It hasn’t led to poor results, however, because Suarez’s fastball and sinker both grade out as dominant offerings.
Suarez joins right-hander Raisel Iglesias, who re-upped on a one-year, $16MM contract earlier in the offseason, to form a potent one-two punch at the back of new manager Walt Weiss’ bullpen. Notably, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that Iglesias will continue to serve as the closer in Atlanta. Suarez will operate as his primary setup man (and, of course, can handle save opportunities in the event that Iglesias is unavailable or suffers an injury). Setup work is nothing new for Suarez, who in 2022 helped set up for Taylor Rogers and in 2023 was a key setup arm for Josh Hader.
On the surface, a three-year, $45MM contract for a high-end reliever feels fairly well in line with contractual norms around the game. However, Suarez’s camp did quite well to get him the third guaranteed year. As shown in MLBTR’s Contract Tracker, this is the first deal of three or more years for a 35-year-old (or older) reliever since Will Harris signed for $24MM with the Nationals prior to the 2020 season. Before that, you’d have to go all the way back to Ryan Madson’s three-year pact with the A’s back in 2015 to find another example of a bullpen arm being paid for this long of a term at Suarez’s age.
Adding Suarez brings Atlanta’s 2026 payroll up to about $241MM. RosterResource estimates that the team is carrying more than $236MM worth of luxury-tax considerations, which places them within $8MM of the 2026 season’s $244MM first-tier luxury threshold. President of baseball operations Alex Anthopoulos has already checked several items off his winter to-do list, though Atlanta still figures to be open to additions at shortstop, on the bench and/or on the pitching staff. That said, re-signing Iglesias, acquiring utilityman Mauricio Dubon and bringing in both Suarez and outfielder Mike Yastrzemski (on a two-year, $23MM deal) has removed some of the urgency to make further additions.
ESPN’s Jeff Passan first reported the agreement and the terms of the contract. The Athletic’s Will Sammon first reported the year-to-year breakdown.

lol. If I were a Mets fan, I’d be soooooo pissed.
There is enough time for them to put together a 3rd place team.
Baseball is not played in the Winter, let’s see what happens next summer
Great insight!
“You win pennants in the off season when you build your teams with trades and free agents.” – Earl Weaver
AJ Preller endorses this reply.
Not played in the winter? I just went to a Puerto Rican Winter League game last week.
Never heard of Mexican Winter League? You’re missing out!!
The winter is not over, plus how many times have you watched a team make a couple of moves before the trade deadline and just take off.
I wish I could downvote this.
Try last place team. Stearns is doing a full rebuild and just not saying it. He keeps saying that there is a plan in place but not telling anyone what it is. I’m a die hard Mets fan and I am just beginning to understand that this is what we have to look forward to in 2026. If someone is willing to take McNeil and Senga, they’ll be fine too. It is a salary purge and rebuild no doubt about it.
Stearns even last year has never been one to tell the public his plans and he isn’t going to start now. I don’t know why Mets fans are pissed, y’all didn’t win with that core of Nimmo, Alonso, and Diaz for 7 years why would the 8th be any different.
But that only makes sense if they get below CBT and reset luxury tax. Right now they’re over. Also they wouldn’t have paid for Williams. I don’t know what they’re doing. I think they 100 thought they had Diaz back, and now they don’t know what to do. If they got below CBT and reset tax penalties, I’d be ok with that, then go after Skubal next year and not pay double with penalties.
I understand the rage, but it’s not a full rebuild. You just signed a 50+ mil closer.
And a year removed from a 700 million dollar deal.
3rd place?? Not with Stearns running the ship lol
I don’t think the Mets FO were ever in on him or anyone after Williams. I said it from the outset, that’s their dude now.
I’m curious to see what happens when Williams faces Alonso next September,
@websoulsurfer
youtube.com/watch?v=HN3fL9JX3nQ
If they think Williams is their Closer they are in for a rude awakening as he is a ticking time bomb playing in NYC.
@Anthony
I bet Williams rebounds back to his 2024 level. His 2025 numbers were fluky.
@KnicksFanCavsFan
I think he will be better in his first 2 years with the Mets at least. I’m unsure if he will recapture his elite form though. He hasn’t been the same since that blown save in the Wild Card Round 2 years ago.
Possibly, but possibly not. There was no injury to point to. He just seemed unsteady all year even when he wasn’t bad.
Comments about how Williams can’t pitch in New York are getting about as tiresome as comments about trash cans and deferrals
Except he literally had a bad season in NY?
His fip xfip xera all suggest he was still very good if not quite as elite as he was in Mil.
He was tipping pitches. Hell be fine.
Lol it wont matter anyways because he wont have many save opportunities….
Ummm…wait until you hear about the Lindor rumors being true
Lindor rumors?
Soto-Lindor clubhouse rift and Lindor being a cancer. May as well trade him too after losing Diaz, Alonso, and Nimmo.
Not even the rumors I mean. There are legitimate rumors of Lindor being shopped. I don’t know if I believe that, but Padres trade has some substance behind it.
Interesting didn’t hear about that one. Well they’d better get their s#!+ together quick because their FO isn’t.
100% he’s being shopped or he’s gone by trade deadline. Can’t wait for stearns to disappear
lol when did this happen? I listen to New York sports talk radio I have t heard them talk about Lindor trade once. Padres are looking to make a big trade but it’s going to involve them shedding payroll.
I listened to FANthe past few days. How did they miss this?
Von love your name buddy…. I hear Preller is looking to make huge creative trade or trades….is Lindor or Soto the problem in the clubhouse? Mets are no doubt looking to make some moves as well as Padres…..Lot of pressure in Queens fans not happy with Stearns at ALL! Plus what kind of winter would it be without Preller doing something big……what you think ? Thanks for your feedback also besides this site where is good place to get inside scoop on what’s going on in behind the scenes in MLB clubhouses?
I do not think the Mets are rebuilding at all, so trading Lindor sounds insane to ne. However, Lindor for Tatis is a star for star swap. I still can’t buy it, but there’s been random reports out there, so I have no idea what is happening.
Lindor was born on November 14. He isn’t a Cancer; he’s a Scorpio.
Also, b/c Ryan Helsley is the best available closing specialist, if they didn’t intend on Williams being closer. Ryan Big Apple Redemption tour incoming, lol
He signed with Baltimore before the Winter Meetings
Helsley already signed with Baltimore.
Goodness…totally missed that one. Thanks!
Yes we are lol
With Iggy also in the fold, and adding Robert Suarez, does Atlanta have a closer by committee now? Or is Iggy the setup guy?
Reports I have seen say Iggy is closing.
Iggy becomes the high leverage guy and back up closer.
@SoCal: Article says Rosenthal reporting that Iggy “will continue to serve as the closer in Atlanta.”
Yup, I wrote my response before that info was available. Either way, I’m excited for our new bullpen
Suarez the man there now
Why would you be so pissed if you’re a Mets fan? Williams is the better reliever. That’s why he’s getting $17 million per season and Suarez gets $15. These front offices know how to value players better than the MLBTR peanut gallery.
Braves be getting 7 pot primos with a fastball to match the heat, Mets are getting dumped on by every free agent who can leave. Definitely something up with that. Guess Suarez didnt want to be Sotos teammate again?
3/45 is a no brainer for Suarez
The Mets deserve all the criticism. They’re turning out to be even more pathetic than the Twins and Pirates. I hope they keep missing the playoffs until they get their act together.
That’s um unexpected. Quite the tandem at the end now.
Adding the Braves three deals in total were pretty good. The Raisel deal now looks better as he’ll surely slide down to the 8th, with Suarez taking over the 9th, and the Yaz deal gives them a competent outfielder so you can rotate the lot of them through DH keeping them all fresh. Not bad.
I figure Iggy will still be the closer this year and Suarez will be the closer then unless he struggles. Nice issue to have.
@Salzilla: Per the article, Rosenthal said that Iggy will still be the closer.
I missed that, but read it on MLB, weird!
My hope is some team will take Profar, he’s going to lose more games with his defense that he wins with his bat.
7 pot primos! Braves got 7 pot primos
Lol, had to google that. Spicy!
Primo Sports Group serving it up 98 mph hot
Same. They sound insane.
Theyre excellent. Put one in dinner tonight with 4 chocolate primotalii, 1 yellow moruga scorpion, and 2 7 pot red bubblegum. Don’t know why they call them 7 pots, suppose to be enough for 7 pots? Use 8 in half a pot. They came from Georgia too, Braves got 7 pot primos! 98 to 101 MPH
I know that some braves fans wanted a big name expensive free agent addition, but I am very pleased with how Atlanta has worked to improve the overall team so far.
I don’t expect this to be the last move either.
Suarez counts as a big name FA addition. Definitely one of the top 3 relievers available.
He’s one of the guys I wanted my team to sign. Solid move by the Braves.
The big names I was referring to were Schwarber, Alonso, Bichette (and some would say Tucker although I can’t recall any fans clamoring for his addition).
Suarez is a great reliever, and one of the best that was available in free agency but by no means does he qualify as expensive.
AA is finally cooking now. A SP and hopefully a SS, call it a great off -season. I’m happy to eat crow and prove all us naysayers wrong.
Sprinkle that crow w/salt, pepper, and a generous amount of your favorite barbecue sauce. That’s how I take mine anyway………..
I can douse anything with hot sauce and be happy lol
Franks Buffalo on every pizza I eat, lol.
Man have you ever tried green tabasco sauce on pizza?!…my wife turned me onto that years ago, its a game changer and I don’t even like Tabasco 😁
No but I will now. I’ll blame you if it burns my tongue off though. lol.
Gore and Abrams from the Nats would round out the roster nicely, but Atlanta would probably have to part with smith-Shawver, Caminiti, and another prospect to get it done.
Gonna take a lot more then that to get both Gore and Abrams
I think there’s definitely a trade brewing. Yaz wasn’t bought in to sit on the bench, i am convinced they try to get a shortstop via trade with Murphy being part of the package.
For three years and 45m, that’s a really good deal,.
Keep in mind Suarez is about to turn 35. He’s not a fireballing kid.
You can say the same to Aroldis Chapman.
He’s not young but he also didn’t play professionally until he was 24 and he was developed overseas so there are less miles on his arm so to speak
His hard-hit rate has gone up a bit in recent years, but he was still effective last year (with help from Petco).
3 and 45 for a 35 year old? That’s a bad gamble IMO.
That’s funny. You wanted the Cubs to sign him 45 minutes ago, but when the Braves signed him you flip flopped. You did say “if the price is right” when you wanted him. What did you think he was going to get?
I wanted him for the Cubs if the price was right. Too many years and too much money. That was a hard pass for me.
He may not be young in baseball years but he is still a fireballer
I like the move.
His peripherals indicate he still has it despite his age. He has a solid strikeout % and doesnt walk many batters.
The years might be a little risky but we shouldn’t assume this contract was offered in a vacuum. It’s almost certain other teams saw the same things the Braves did and made inquires and offers.
So 29 other teams refuse to give this amount for this many years to a 35 yr old pitcher, but you like it?
Discount
I really appreciate it when the fans of the team a free agent is leaving doesnt rip the player apart because he left their preferred team. Shows maturity and character.
a budding bromance
FINALLY
Good now they have two old men who break down to lead their bullpen. Third place it is. Yay.
Neither have been on the IL since 2023 and neither have more than minor trips. Woefully ignorant response
He never remembers…
Some of us still remember that Never Remember used to be blackpink/Joel/etc before he was banned half a dozen times. He’s still the same troll.
Not sure about that, but you might be right. Noticeable that TradeAcuna/NoNLCSwithoutMadBum hasn’t been posting since the end of the season.
Woefully ignorant he is.
…..and he might even look like that little troll!
El Eduardo: You better watch out. I pointed out his (never remember) frequently flawed logic last week and he muted me.
Got you beat on that “he muted me” timeline. He did the same thing to me when he was blackpink. Funny that after he got banned, paid the TR fee and returned as Never Remember that his ban was still in effect. Same troll schtick, just another of his many screen names.
He’s got me muted too. I guess he just likes to see his own posts and nobody else’s.
@Jeff,
You are a veritable MLBTR troll chronicler! Thank you for taking one for the team.
Lol, glad to do it Bart. Easy to spot these guys when they crawl out from underneath their bridges.
Nice deal
Mess up all of our prediction contests, AA! You do you!
If I’m a Mets fan I’d rather have Suarez instead of Williams. I’m still hoping Yankees get Fairbanks
Aside from 2025, Williams is a much better reliever than Suarez. Not a knock on Suarez, but Williams is a top 3-5 closer in MLB, aside from last year where his ERA was high but underlying metrics were basically unchanged.
It’d be interesting to see his stats in 8th and 9th innings (as setup/closer). IMHO, he’s an elite setup man, average closer.
Yeah, I think Williams was the much better get then Suarez. When his deal is up with the Mets he’ll be Saurez’s age today.
His 2025 was clearly a down year from his previous seasons, but we’re talking a line against of .197/.287/.320 (.607 OPS) with 34.7 k%.
From 2022-2024 they hit only .139/.254/.214 (.468 OPS) while striking out 39.5% of the time.
Suarez has been very consistent giving up a .190/.258/.305 (.563 OPS) line in his 4 years in San Diego striking out 26.5%.
The younger guy with a history of being better seems like an easy choice of the two. The money is probably about the same since 15m of Williams’ 3/51m deal is deferred.
Williams got paid more and is better than Suarez. Still great to see the Braves get Suarez, though.
I had Suárez on the Braves
Where’d you have Iglesias/Diaz going?
I had Raisel on the Dbacks and Diaz back to the Mets. I just figured that AA likes to spend big on relievers.
I had Ig and Diaz correct but had Suarez to Mets – kind of hedging my bet there. I doubt if many had him going to ATL.
Like Polar Bear to Baltimore – if 5% had thst id be surprised.
The leaderboard didn’t change at all on page 1 after that signing suggesting most missed.
Wow I am surprised good guesstimate @angryyankeesfan1
RunDMC
I have to thank AA for helping me set a new personal-best – so far – in the FA contest. Regularly got 8 right, up to 9 this time around.
If I ever just pick the free agent’s previous team, I’d be much better off. I always want to see them in a new city.
Wonder who’s getting the closer job: Suarez or Raisel?
Already confirmed to be Iglesias.
Probably doesn’t matter to Suarez. He has pitched the 7/8 role for other closers. Plus this is likely his last big deal. So he isn’t fighting to get paid again.
Honestly, Suarez is better as a setup guy. Way too many stressful 9th innings here in SD, caused mainly by lack of location and ineffective secondary pitches
Braves are good at adjusting pitch mix for their acquisitions. Hopefully they can get Suarez’ changeup right.
In the same way that Raisel was Kenley’s setup, Suarez will be the 8th this year and the closer next.
Thats a good setup with Iggy and Suarez or vice-versa. I am glad bullpen is a priority.
@RunDMC Yea AA almost always guarantees a screwup for our predictions!
Good front end deal for ATL.
Im really starting to lose faith in Jed Hoyer. The Cubs had an overperforming bullpen last year with some has been. The Cubs need some velocity in the bullpen. Palencia cant do it himself. Jed has done NOTHING this off-season except let players walk and sign Phil Maton. As much revenue as the Cubs bring in plus 5 home playoff games last year, he should have plenty of money to play with. I have a feeling he is going to sign reclamation projects again. He let Keller go and he actually was topping out at 97 mph in the playoffs last year. He was definitely one that we should have re-signed. I get so excited for this time of year, but then I remember I am a Cubs fan and that Jed Hoyer is involved in the team’s destiny.
I put more blame on Ricketts pretending like the Cubs barely break even.
Jed Hoyer too busy picking his nose and flinging boogers at the wall.
Heaven forbid the Cubs actually spend any money to fix their glaring holes on the roster. They only need an Ace, a closer, and a #3 hitter in the lineup. No reason to go spending any money or trading any coveted prospects or anything rash…
Settle down man. You just got Hoby Milner.
Ok AA finally something now we need that SS and Starter pitcher and we can be ready for spring training.
Mets fans – you ok?
Do you think they are after losing Diaz, Alonso, and Nimmo?
This is akin to the Midnight Massacre in ’77 when they traded Tom Seaver. Get ready for them to waste 4 years of Soto’s prime, then have him opt out. The only ho p e they have left is that the rookies actually turn out to be above average MLB players.
Nolan McLean looks great, but the Mets need more than that.
Would a 31-year-old Soto opt out of 10/460?
If he opts out of anything, it would be the Mets, not the money.
No
Until you see them sign Tucker and Suarez. I’ve come to the conclusion that the fans for all 30 teams think the owner is cheap.
If the Mets don’t add a big bat Soto will walk more than Bonds did in his heyday! 200+
Seems just about where his money was expected to land.
Definitely will help the Braves pen. I said it yesterday when the Braves rumors were circling about him. I believe it’s a good idea for the Braves to add good pen arms. They should shorten the starts of their starters in hopes of keeping them healthy.
Best of luck Bob. Thank you for the saves.
Very UnBraveslike.
Why? They took on Iglesias contract from LAA which was similar to this one. Paid Will Smith back in the day. AA pays RPs better than almost any other position (especially including most SP).
Your point is a good one, but the Braves are typically risk-averse, and this – signing a 35 year old RP to three years for full price isn’t that. I admire the willingness to spend, but it seems out of character for this team.
Time will tell whether picking up the $7M option on Pierce Johnson would’ve been a better use of funds, while retaining the ability to spend the $38 mill elsewhere…..
Spending 7M on Pierce is more risk when you saw his stuff post-AS Break last year. Very telling he’s still avail (and could re-sign). Closers age better than most, and while a 35 y/o will show some age, he theoretically shouldn’t have as much mileage on his arm considering he didn’t break into MLB until 31 y/o (pitching before in Asia, where they don’t pitch as many IP).
Braves always spend big on their bullpen
Right you are. Now looking forward to seven inning games in 2026.
Right now they have $54m spent on their bullpen for ’26. I’m too lazy to research but over 20% of payroll on a bullpen does seems high.
Well, glad I was wrong with my other statement about MY but I still feel like we need a much stronger bat. People seem to sweep under the rug just how bad the offense has been even when healthy the last two years and Ozuna is gone, who was actually one of the better hitters on our roster. So the offense got worse
You have to wonder? Who’s going to close? Raisel or Suarez ? Only time will tell
No wondering, it’s already been announced that Iggy is closing.
IMHO, I think the reasoning is that 1) AA doesn’t mind paying RP, 2) with Jimenez a question mark for being the top setup man, they needed an elite RP, 3) Iglesias on a 1-year deal – have Suarez be elite setup man/co-closer in ’26, closer in ’27-’28 as Iglesias’ replacement.
They effectively take care of a setup man (hoping a healthy Jimenez can bring RP depth at some point), while already locking in closer 26-27.
Blue Jays, start getting worried. You still haven’t got a leverage reliever yet!
Fairbanks is the guy they want. I will be worried if they don’t get him. I guess this is what Atkins meant when he said it is getting expensive out there.
He put a rider in his contract
Only Jessie Chavez can replace me on the roster should I sustain a injury or leave the team for the birth of my child.
Jesse Chavez can replace any man at anything at anytime.
Dude, are you surprised like I was that the Braves didn’t bring him on in a coaching roll like the Giants were able to?
@howie
Yeah, I was, but I’m glad to see him stay in the game in some capacity. I’ve always liked the outliers or oddball characters that somehow manage to stick around, even more than the superstars. I like the dudes that throw an 88mph 4-seam and still end up 10+k per 9, and the Rogers, O’Day’s, and Nesheks of the world.
@dole
Just one thought of Jesse Chavez and his lab safety glasses send a cold chill down the backs of Trout and Ohtani!
Dude I’m the same way. Chavez is such an easy guy to root for. Totally prefer the Madduxes of the world to the Randy Johnsons, not that I can’t appreciate the flame throwers for what they are, but there’s just something about the art of actually pitching and not just throwing that is intrisically cool. When paired with a cool off-beat personality you’ve got all the ingredients for a fan favorite pitcher like Jesse.
Mike Trout and Ohtani would like to have a word with you.
Chop on Braves fans!
Good signing on the Braves part, inching closer to a .500 record last couple of days. I am not a Braves fan but they still seem like another legit bat and SP from competing for a playoff spot…
Brava only need one thing to be on the playoffs…health.
All teams need health…
True both some even if healthy aren’t very good. Braves on the other hand with good health can be an excellent team.
True, a healthy team doesn’t equal a good playoff team
As a Braves fan, this one legit surprised me.
Hey Jed Hoyer did you see that the closer market just dried up..
Jansen, Fairbanks and weaver are still out there.
Whatever you think of them is a different story.
devin who led the lg in blown saves got more $ from Bonehead stearns & cohen than Suarez who
Led the lg in saves
Bout time they did something good
Every move the Braves have done so far this off-season has been a great move.
I’m talking about over the years
They have done pretty good over the years and have had consistent success. Last years non moves were to simply reset the luxury tax. No way Alex was sitting on his hands this off season.
Yaz and Suarez. Braves starting to make some moves
Happy trails, Bobby Fastball! Thanks for the great memories over the past three years. Glad he got paid, especially for that last guaranteed year. Best of luck in Atlanta.
No but this team as currently constructed is arguably less competetive than last season’s.
– Is Williams better than Diaz
– Do homeruns matter?
-Will Siemen’s past ‘defensive metrics’ increase run precention?
That’s the same with most teams. Every team has someone that opts out or ages out.
FINALLY!!!! Couldn’t handle too many more dumpster deals. I’m assuming he’ll replace Iggy next year and Jimenez will be the setup guy.
Padres arguably should have gone to the QO here.
Good riddance! Tanner Scott 2.0! Bullpen ERA and blown saves will see a dip in SD this season. Congrats to the Braves 🙌
Suarez was so fun. I’ll never forget two moments him blowing the save against Seth Beer in his first opportunity or pitching in the rain against LA in the eighth inning of G4. Happy trails.
Don’t forget about Jimenez. From the media, it sounds like he’s a question mark, but what if he rebounds and becomes the 7 to Suarez’s 8th, until Iggy’s 9th? On days when they want to limit starters to say six innings (i.e., Sale), that could be lights out. However, that’s betting on dominance from two older relievers and someone coming off knee surgery.
Payroll now sits around $241M and the Lux Tax is $236.
This still leaves the Braves around 28M under the 2nd lux tax. I look at the $264M closer to the top line. I don’t see them going over that mark. I will be pleasantly surprised if they do go over that.
$250-$264M puts them roughly in the top 5 payrolls in MLB, which is where they are saying they can be.
This leaves Atlanta with around 15-20M to spend now and roughly another 8M for in-season moves.
That seems just enough to bring back Kim which is what I think will end up happening. If not Kim then a veteran SP on a 1 year deal (not sure who). Corey Seager would be the absolute dream but IDK if there’s enough payroll left unless you unload someone like Murphy or Bummer in the same trade.
Yes, but the 2nd tier is $264M
what? not the Dodgers? epic fail lol
OK, give me Corey Seager and call it an offseason AA
I thought he was going to the Phillies. Another one wrong…
It’s “Suiggy” time!!!!!!! 🤷🏼
I haven’t heard a peep about Ozuna. Does he have a market, or will he be a late signing to a team?
I see him being a late signing. Even see the possibility of a return to the Braves on a team friendly deal. He would be a weapon off the bench in a tight game.
@cash3w: Pretty quiet on the Ozuna front, although I did see a snippet about him the other day. One of the talking heads mentioned that his market would probably limit him to a $12M 1 year prove it deal due to his age and health questions. Can’t remember who it was….Rosenthal maybe?
Hopefully the moves that Alex has made so far in the early going will shut up the Braves complainers who say that Alex only shops on Temu.
Putz….
Where are the giants? Was hoping we’d get him and this seems like a reasonable deal
MLBTR predicted 3/$48M. They were pretty close.
Let me know when David Stearns wakes up.
He’s making coffee.
Articles keep on stating Braves still have to get a starting SS. I am still hedging on Nacho being given the role. There is nothing left for him to prove in AAA and they have to see what he can do.
Yes, his opening stint in the majors was not spectacular, but you don’t give up on a top prospect after 218 AB’s in the majors. Especially with him only being 22 which is about 3 years younger than most AAA players, much less MLB. He is cheap, cost controlled, and you already have acquired his backup.
I could be wrong, and I would love for them to sign Bichette, but I just think they will now prioritize a veteran SP3 or SP4 innings eater to help stabilize the youth and injured rotation. I would love to see the aforementioned trade for Abrams and Gore as well, but I doubt the Nats trade within the division.
After Nacho’s ugly MLB stint in 2024, he was sent back to Gwinnett. He played only 3B (couple of games at 2B) after being demoted. In 2025, Alvarez started no games at SS for Gwinnett before being recalled to Atlanta where he played 58 games at 3B (couple of games at 2B when Albies was injured.) Again, he got zero starts at SS in Atlanta. Why would the Braves give Alvarez SS when they have obviously decided he’s not a viable ML SS—evidenced by the fact that he played no SS for the last year and a half in AAA or Atlanta. The Braves don’t “have to see what he can do.” They already know. He did receive some playing time at SS in the Arizona Fall League a few weeks ago. The organization was likely showcasing him as a trade piece. Extremely rare for a player w/Alvarez ML experience to even play in the AFL. Imo, Alvarez’ probable future in the ML is at 3B (if dealt) or as a utility bench piece. Very limited value at utility because he’s not a viable SS. Dubon may be somebody’s backup at SS if the Braves trade for or sign one, but it won’t be Alvarez.
Valid points. However, there were other reasons for him being put at 2B and 3B. It wasn’t simply that they didn’t see him as a SS.
Albies was injured, and gets injured regularly. If moving him, they envisioned Alvarez there … all the way up until Arcia flamed out. Then they decided maybe he could be a utility guy and started getting him starts at 3B. They already knew what he can do at SS and by all scouts indications, he is a viable SS. However, they now have a utility guy in Dubon, so what do they do with Alvarez? Open position is SS. I would get Alvarez regular AB’s at a single fielding position looking towards him as a potential starter, and let Dubon be the 5 games per week subbing around the infield guy given his comfort at that job.
Regardless of the take, Braves do not need to add more in infield. Either Dubon starts and Alvarez is utility or maybe gets a little more seasoning at AAA, or Alvarez starts and Dubon is utility. Either way, no more money needs to be spent there especially given the only two starting candidates currently available are pricey (Bichette and Kim). I don’t think the Braves will bust the bank on Bichette, and if they wanted Kim badly enough they would have extended him last year. Abrams will most likely not be traded in the division, leaving next to nothing available as a starting SS. If a can’t miss opportunity comes up, then sure, but that is doubtful.
“…..By all scouts indications, he is a viable SS.” No. That’s not at all how scouts grade Alvarez. Recent scouting reports on Alvarez state that “his time as a SS w/Atlanta is over.” Alvarez was a 3Bman when drafted. The Braves experimented w/him at SS and gave up on that a year and a half ago. At best, he’s a break glass in case of emergency at SS. Imo, he’s got a ticket to Gwinnett for 2026 unless the FO can find a taker for him. One of us is going to be surprised at Alvarez fate w/the Braves.
Honestly, the Mets deserve to finish below the Braves and miss the playoffs again. Their front office is downright pathetic and their fans are sooooo annoying.
Mets fans are about A to A+ level minors annoying when compared to Yankees fans.
But yes, they can be annoying.
Didn’t see this one coming.
NL East will be wide open 2026 as of right now. Unless Phils can do something to improve outfield production, they will be in regression mode. IMO,while injuries certainly impacted the Braves the past couple seasons, Snitker didnt keep the clubhouse motivated and they seemed like a bunch of individuals. They quit.Change at manager might be really good for them.
The Mets collapsed, but they are somewhere between the first half team and the chokers of the second. They tried too hard. Alonso, IMO,is an overrated player. Well see how much his streaky power is missed or not.
If your a Braves or Mets fan dont think you dont have a chance…depending on how the teams beat up on each other, I’m not confident even 90 wins has to happen to win the division…heck, the Marlins might even be in the mix…
Ok AA keep playing chess…we need Nico Hoerner and a #3 SP and we can get that ring.
Kind of a strange use of resources, but it ain’t my money.
Have to assume the third year was the clincher. Glad Toronto didn’t go that far. Good luck AA
I wonder if this is an example of Bryan Abreu next year.
Atlanta Braves had a horrible record in 2025 with 1 run losses. They should be better in the bullpen with Raisel and Suarez in the 8 and 9 inning slots.
Take that! Whomever
Not me. I had them re-signing Iggy and signing Brad Keller. Like this, but I still hope they go after Keller. They won’t, but the greedy fan in me wishes they would.
Eugenio and ranger to follow. With evidence in this years free agent class, one would have to admire the Suarez lineage.
