Braves Sign Robert Suarez

By Steve Adams | December 11, 2025 at 11:59pm CDT

The Braves further solidified the back of their bullpen Thursday, announcing the signing of former Padres closer Robert Suarez on a three-year, $45MM contract. Suarez, a client of Primo Sports Group, became a free agent at season’s end when he opted out of the final two years and $16MM on his five-year contract with San Diego. He’ll be paid $13MM in 2026 and $16MM in both 2027 and 2028, per the team. There are reportedly no deferrals in the contract. Atlanta designated lefty Ryan Rolison for assignment to open a spot on the 40-man roster (more on that move here).

The 34-year-old Suarez (35 in March) went directly from Mexico to Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball late last decade and, after establishing himself as one of the top relievers in NPB, has broken out as a top-tier reliever in the majors. Originally signed on a two-year deal with the Padres, he opted out after one year and inked a five-year, $46MM extension that afforded him another opt-out provision after the third year, which he took last month.

Now Atlanta-bound, Suarez has consistently posted quality numbers in high-leverage spots for the Friars. Dating back to his 2022 MLB debut, he’s posted a 2.91 ERA with a 26.5% strikeout rate and 7.6% walk rate in 210 innings. Suarez sits just under 99 mph with his four-seamer and complements the pitch with a changeup that got great results in ’22-’23 but has been hit hard the past two seasons. It hasn’t led to poor results, however, because Suarez’s fastball and sinker both grade out as dominant offerings.

Suarez joins right-hander Raisel Iglesias, who re-upped on a one-year, $16MM contract earlier in the offseason, to form a potent one-two punch at the back of new manager Walt Weiss’ bullpen. Notably, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that Iglesias will continue to serve as the closer in Atlanta. Suarez will operate as his primary setup man (and, of course, can handle save opportunities in the event that Iglesias is unavailable or suffers an injury). Setup work is nothing new for Suarez, who in 2022 helped set up for Taylor Rogers and in 2023 was a key setup arm for Josh Hader.

On the surface, a three-year, $45MM contract for a high-end reliever feels fairly well in line with contractual norms around the game. However, Suarez’s camp did quite well to get him the third guaranteed year. As shown in MLBTR’s Contract Tracker, this is the first deal of three or more years for a 35-year-old (or older) reliever since Will Harris signed for $24MM with the Nationals prior to the 2020 season. Before that, you’d have to go all the way back to Ryan Madson’s three-year pact with the A’s back in 2015 to find another example of a bullpen arm being paid for this long of a term at Suarez’s age.

Adding Suarez brings Atlanta’s 2026 payroll up to about $241MM. RosterResource estimates that the team is carrying more than $236MM worth of luxury-tax considerations, which places them within $8MM of the 2026 season’s $244MM first-tier luxury threshold. President of baseball operations Alex Anthopoulos has already checked several items off his winter to-do list, though Atlanta still figures to be open to additions at shortstop, on the bench and/or on the pitching staff. That said, re-signing Iglesias, acquiring utilityman Mauricio Dubon and bringing in both Suarez and outfielder Mike Yastrzemski (on a two-year, $23MM deal) has removed some of the urgency to make further additions.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan first reported the agreement and the terms of the contract. The Athletic’s Will Sammon first reported the year-to-year breakdown.

The winter is not over, plus how many times have you watched a team make a couple of moves before the trade deadline and just take off.

Try last place team. Stearns is doing a full rebuild and just not saying it. He keeps saying that there is a plan in place but not telling anyone what it is. I’m a die hard Mets fan and I am just beginning to understand that this is what we have to look forward to in 2026. If someone is willing to take McNeil and Senga, they’ll be fine too. It is a salary purge and rebuild no doubt about it.

Stearns even last year has never been one to tell the public his plans and he isn’t going to start now. I don’t know why Mets fans are pissed, y’all didn’t win with that core of Nimmo, Alonso, and Diaz for 7 years why would the 8th be any different.

But that only makes sense if they get below CBT and reset luxury tax. Right now they’re over. Also they wouldn’t have paid for Williams. I don’t know what they’re doing. I think they 100 thought they had Diaz back, and now they don’t know what to do. If they got below CBT and reset tax penalties, I’d be ok with that, then go after Skubal next year and not pay double with penalties.

Mets are no doubt looking to make some moves as well as Padres…..Lot of pressure in Queens fans not happy with Stearns at ALL! Plus what kind of winter would it be without Preller doing something big……what you think ? Thanks for your feedback also besides this site where is good place to get inside scoop on what’s going on in behind the scenes in MLB clubhouses?

I do not think the Mets are rebuilding at all, so trading Lindor sounds insane to ne. However, Lindor for Tatis is a star for star swap. I still can’t buy it, but there’s been random reports out there, so I have no idea what is happening.

Adding the Braves three deals in total were pretty good. The Raisel deal now looks better as he’ll surely slide down to the 8th, with Suarez taking over the 9th, and the Yaz deal gives them a competent outfielder so you can rotate the lot of them through DH keeping them all fresh. Not bad.

Suarez is a great reliever, and one of the best that was available in free agency but by no means does he qualify as expensive.

That’s funny. You wanted the Cubs to sign him 45 minutes ago, but when the Braves signed him you flip flopped. You did say “if the price is right” when you wanted him. What did you think he was going to get?

His peripherals indicate he still has it despite his age. He has a solid strikeout % and doesnt walk many batters.

The years might be a little risky but we shouldn’t assume this contract was offered in a vacuum. It’s almost certain other teams saw the same things the Braves did and made inquires and offers.

Aside from 2025, Williams is a much better reliever than Suarez. Not a knock on Suarez, but Williams is a top 3-5 closer in MLB, aside from last year where his ERA was high but underlying metrics were basically unchanged.

Yeah, I think Williams was the much better get then Suarez. When his deal is up with the Mets he’ll be Saurez’s age today.

His 2025 was clearly a down year from his previous seasons, but we’re talking a line against of .197/.287/.320 (.607 OPS) with 34.7 k%.

From 2022-2024 they hit only .139/.254/.214 (.468 OPS) while striking out 39.5% of the time.

Suarez has been very consistent giving up a .190/.258/.305 (.563 OPS) line in his 4 years in San Diego striking out 26.5%.

The younger guy with a history of being better seems like an easy choice of the two. The money is probably about the same since 15m of Williams’ 3/51m deal is deferred.

Im really starting to lose faith in Jed Hoyer. The Cubs had an overperforming bullpen last year with some has been. The Cubs need some velocity in the bullpen. Palencia cant do it himself. Jed has done NOTHING this off-season except let players walk and sign Phil Maton. As much revenue as the Cubs bring in plus 5 home playoff games last year, he should have plenty of money to play with. I have a feeling he is going to sign reclamation projects again. He let Keller go and he actually was topping out at 97 mph in the playoffs last year. He was definitely one that we should have re-signed. I get so excited for this time of year, but then I remember I am a Cubs fan and that Jed Hoyer is involved in the team’s destiny.

This is akin to the Midnight Massacre in ’77 when they traded Tom Seaver. Get ready for them to waste 4 years of Soto’s prime, then have him opt out. The only ho p e they have left is that the rookies actually turn out to be above average MLB players.

Your point is a good one, but the Braves are typically risk-averse, and this – signing a 35 year old RP to three years for full price isn’t that. I admire the willingness to spend, but it seems out of character for this team.

Time will tell whether picking up the $7M option on Pierce Johnson would’ve been a better use of funds, while retaining the ability to spend the $38 mill elsewhere…..

Spending 7M on Pierce is more risk when you saw his stuff post-AS Break last year. Very telling he’s still avail (and could re-sign). Closers age better than most, and while a 35 y/o will show some age, he theoretically shouldn’t have as much mileage on his arm considering he didn’t break into MLB until 31 y/o (pitching before in Asia, where they don’t pitch as many IP).

IMHO, I think the reasoning is that 1) AA doesn’t mind paying RP, 2) with Jimenez a question mark for being the top setup man, they needed an elite RP, 3) Iglesias on a 1-year deal – have Suarez be elite setup man/co-closer in ’26, closer in ’27-’28 as Iglesias’ replacement.

They effectively take care of a setup man (hoping a healthy Jimenez can bring RP depth at some point), while already locking in closer 26-27.

When paired with a cool off-beat personality you’ve got all the ingredients for a fan favorite pitcher like Jesse.

No but this team as currently constructed is arguably less competetive than last season’s.
      – Is Williams better than Diaz
      – Do homeruns matter?
-Will Siemen’s past ‘defensive metrics’ increase run precention?

That’s the same with most teams. Every team has someone that opts out or ages out.

Good riddance! Tanner Scott 2.0! Bullpen ERA and blown saves will see a dip in SD this season. Congrats to the Braves 🙌

Suarez was so fun. I’ll never forget two moments him blowing the save against Seth Beer in his first opportunity or pitching in the rain against LA in the eighth inning of G4. Happy trails.

Don’t forget about Jimenez. From the media, it sounds like he’s a question mark, but what if he rebounds and becomes the 7 to Suarez’s 8th, until Iggy’s 9th? On days when they want to limit starters to say six innings (i.e., Sale), that could be lights out. However, that’s betting on dominance from two older relievers and someone coming off knee surgery.

Payroll now sits around $241M and the Lux Tax is $236.

This still leaves the Braves around 28M under the 2nd lux tax. I look at the $264M closer to the top line. I don’t see them going over that mark. I will be pleasantly surprised if they do go over that.

$250-$264M puts them roughly in the top 5 payrolls in MLB, which is where they are saying they can be.

This leaves Atlanta with around 15-20M to spend now and roughly another 8M for in-season moves.

That seems just enough to bring back Kim which is what I think will end up happening. If not Kim then a veteran SP on a 1 year deal (not sure who). Corey Seager would be the absolute dream but IDK if there’s enough payroll left unless you unload someone like Murphy or Bummer in the same trade.

I haven’t heard a peep about Ozuna. Does he have a market, or will he be a late signing to a team?

I see him being a late signing. Even see the possibility of a return to the Braves on a team friendly deal. He would be a weapon off the bench in a tight game.

@cash3w: Pretty quiet on the Ozuna front, although I did see a snippet about him the other day. One of the talking heads mentioned that his market would probably limit him to a $12M 1 year prove it deal due to his age and health questions. Can’t remember who it was….Rosenthal maybe?

Articles keep on stating Braves still have to get a starting SS. I am still hedging on Nacho being given the role. There is nothing left for him to prove in AAA and they have to see what he can do.

Yes, his opening stint in the majors was not spectacular, but you don’t give up on a top prospect after 218 AB’s in the majors. Especially with him only being 22 which is about 3 years younger than most AAA players, much less MLB. He is cheap, cost controlled, and you already have acquired his backup.

I could be wrong, and I would love for them to sign Bichette, but I just think they will now prioritize a veteran SP3 or SP4 innings eater to help stabilize the youth and injured rotation. I would love to see the aforementioned trade for Abrams and Gore as well, but I doubt the Nats trade within the division.

After Nacho’s ugly MLB stint in 2024, he was sent back to Gwinnett. He played only 3B (couple of games at 2B) after being demoted. In 2025, Alvarez started no games at SS for Gwinnett before being recalled to Atlanta where he played 58 games at 3B (couple of games at 2B when Albies was injured.) Again, he got zero starts at SS in Atlanta. Why would the Braves give Alvarez SS when they have obviously decided he’s not a viable ML SS—evidenced by the fact that he played no SS for the last year and a half in AAA or Atlanta. The Braves don’t “have to see what he can do.” They already know. He did receive some playing time at SS in the Arizona Fall League a few weeks ago. The organization was likely showcasing him as a trade piece. Extremely rare for a player w/Alvarez ML experience to even play in the AFL. Imo, Alvarez’ probable future in the ML is at 3B (if dealt) or as a utility bench piece. Very limited value at utility because he’s not a viable SS. Dubon may be somebody’s backup at SS if the Braves trade for or sign one, but it won’t be Alvarez.

Valid points. However, there were other reasons for him being put at 2B and 3B. It wasn’t simply that they didn’t see him as a SS.

Albies was injured, and gets injured regularly. If moving him, they envisioned Alvarez there … all the way up until Arcia flamed out. Then they decided maybe he could be a utility guy and started getting him starts at 3B. They already knew what he can do at SS and by all scouts indications, he is a viable SS. However, they now have a utility guy in Dubon, so what do they do with Alvarez? Open position is SS. I would get Alvarez regular AB’s at a single fielding position looking towards him as a potential starter, and let Dubon be the 5 games per week subbing around the infield guy given his comfort at that job.

Regardless of the take, Braves do not need to add more in infield. Either Dubon starts and Alvarez is utility or maybe gets a little more seasoning at AAA, or Alvarez starts and Dubon is utility. Either way, no more money needs to be spent there especially given the only two starting candidates currently available are pricey (Bichette and Kim). I don’t think the Braves will bust the bank on Bichette, and if they wanted Kim badly enough they would have extended him last year. Abrams will most likely not be traded in the division, leaving next to nothing available as a starting SS. If a can’t miss opportunity comes up, then sure, but that is doubtful.

“…..By all scouts indications, he is a viable SS.” No. That’s not at all how scouts grade Alvarez. Recent scouting reports on Alvarez state that “his time as a SS w/Atlanta is over.” Alvarez was a 3Bman when drafted. The Braves experimented w/him at SS and gave up on that a year and a half ago. At best, he’s a break glass in case of emergency at SS. Imo, he’s got a ticket to Gwinnett for 2026 unless the FO can find a taker for him. One of us is going to be surprised at Alvarez fate w/the Braves.

NL East will be wide open 2026 as of right now. Unless Phils can do something to improve outfield production, they will be in regression mode. IMO,while injuries certainly impacted the Braves the past couple seasons, Snitker didnt keep the clubhouse motivated and they seemed like a bunch of individuals. They quit.Change at manager might be really good for them.

The Mets collapsed, but they are somewhere between the first half team and the chokers of the second. They tried too hard. Alonso, IMO,is an overrated player. Well see how much his streaky power is missed or not.

If your a Braves or Mets fan dont think you dont have a chance…depending on how the teams beat up on each other, I’m not confident even 90 wins has to happen to win the division…heck, the Marlins might even be in the mix…

Atlanta Braves had a horrible record in 2025 with 1 run losses. They should be better in the bullpen with Raisel and Suarez in the 8 and 9 inning slots.
