Preller: Fernando Tatis Jr. Not Available In Trade Talks

By Steve Adams | December 11, 2025 at 1:57pm CDT

The Padres’ payroll reduction (relative to its 2023 peak) and limited of financial flexibility this offseason has led to plenty of hope from other clubs about the possibility of prying star right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. away from San Diego. However, president of baseball operations A.J. Preller decisively stated at the end of this week’s Winter Meetings that the three-time All-Star won’t be changing hands.

“He’s one of the best players in baseball, is a two-time Platinum (Glove) winner,” Preller told Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune in response to Tatis speculation. “The guy has taken over portions of seasons and games and playoff series and everything like that. … Every one of the different versions and iterations of the team and roster we put up there, it’s ’Tati’ right in the middle. Hopefully, he is one of the top players on our team this year. He’s somebody that we’re not talking about, however you want to say that. If you want to say that’s ’untouchable,’ you can say that.”

A trade of Tatis has never seemed particularly likely, though some around the industry have wondered whether it’ll eventually be necessary, given the uncertainty surrounding Padres ownership and the ongoing efforts to scale back payroll. San Diego has reduced its spending considerably since the passing of late owner Peter Seidler. Earlier this offseason, Seidler’s brother, John, who has since been named the team’s control person, announced that his family will explore a sale of the franchise.

That announcement came less than one year after a tumultuous and very public-facing quarrel between Sheel Seidler — Peter’s widow — and the other two Seidler brothers, Bob and Matt. Back in February, Sheel filed suit against Bob and Matt Seidler, alleging that they’ve breached fiduciary duty and committed fraud as successors of Peter’s trust. She accused her brothers-in-law of selling assets to themselves “far” below market prices in an effort to consolidate control of the franchise and of violating Peter’s wishes that she serve as interim control person before passing ownership onto the couple’s children at a later date. Matt Seidler contested the suit in a formal response wherein he accused his sister-in-law of attempting to “manufacture claims against the Trustees in pursuit of the control that Peter intentionally chose not to give her.” To date, the suits have not been litigated, nor is there any indication that a settlement has been reached.

For the time being, none of that off-field tension seems to have an impact on Tatis’ status with the club. Certainly, an eventual ownership change could create a different financial outlook in San Diego one way or another, particularly considering the remaining nine years and $286MM on Tatis’ contract.

Hefty as that sum may be, it bears emphasizing that it’s still a “bargain” relative to what Tatis would command on the open market. Had Tatis never penned that extension, he’d be a first-time free agent right now, having accumulated his sixth year of MLB service in 2025.

Tatis would be a 26-year-old (27 in January) coming off a .268/.368/.446 showing (131 wRC+) with 25 home runs, 27 doubles two triples, 32 steals (in 39 tries) and career-best walk and strikeout rates (12.9% and 18.7%, respectively). As Preller referenced, he’s a two-time Platinum Glove winner (and three-time Gold Glove winner). Tatis has hit at least 21 home runs in every 162-game season he’s played (plus 17 in the shortened 60-game season back in 2020).

Given his youth, borderline elite production at the plate and superlative defense, Tatis would have been the clear top free agent in this offseason’s class, likely in line for a contract running into his late 30s or even age-40 season. He may not have matched Juan Soto’s jaw-dropping $765MM guarantee, but Tatis would very likely have been in line for a contract even larger than the 14-year, $500MM extension signed by fellow second-generation star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. last spring. He’s been worth an average of about 6.5 wins above replacement (6.4 fWAR, 6.6 bWAR) per 162 games played in his career to this point.

Though the Padres won’t be moving Tatis anytime soon, San Diego is exploring other ways to create more financial flexibility. As was reported earlier in the month, the Friars are at least listening on Jake Cronenworth, if not shopping him, and have been willing to hear out clubs who’ve expressed interest in right-hander Nick Pivetta. RosterResource projects the Padres for a payroll of about $201MM right now. Ownership wants to keep the 2026 payroll roughly in line with last year’s mark, around $224MM, which is down from the team’s rough $255MM peak in 2023 but considerably higher than spending levels under prior ownership groups.

@Molly He literally traded Soto for one major league SP without much experience, one legit prospect, 2 depth pitchers, and backup catcher…

The guys you mentioned is a better start than that. Add a couple more dudes to that and I’d bet money Preller would bite. 😉

Yankees don’t have the playes and prospects to land Tatis Jr.

It would be the largest blockbuster deal ever in terms of top young playes adn major league ready top prospects that a team would be required to send to San Diego to get a deal done. Tatis Jr is locked up on a long term, team friendly deal and his one of the best, young stars in MLB.

Lowball offers like those presented by fanboys for the Red Sox and Yankees would get laughed off very quickly.

This will not stop the Tatis trade rumors.

286m owed, this article says if he was a free agent he would get over 500m.

That’s a lot of surplus value. Albeit with more years added. His contract is currently through his age 35 season. Which most teams would love because they wouldn’t have to pay for the real decline years.

Last year he was a 6 war player. With what was considered a down offensive year. If the dude can start pulling the ball in the air again his homer numbers will increase.

If a team was to blow the Padres away with an offer that they could not refuse, then, yes Tatis could be traded.

      Never say never.

If the Padres can fill multiple position player and pitching rotation holes in their present team and make themselves a stronger playoff caliber team than the last 2 years with one deal loaded with young, cost controlled, highly rated talent, then it is a no brainer. The Padres would have to seriously consider taking that deal.

Preller has shown that he can go big and has the guts to move guys that the fans would rather he not move. But, flags fly forever.

If fans had a choice of keeping a fan favorite or dramatically increasing the Padres chances of winning a championship by trading a fan favorite, then most fans and Front Office experts would say trade the fan favorite.

They may not be open to trading him now, but depending on how the on-field results of the cost cutting go, that will become reality at some point. The key is to not wait too long. As Dick Wagner once said, “Better to trade a player too early than too late.”

To LAD (Lindor and Senga) for Glasnow, Pages (CF) and Teoscar Hernández (DH).

Realistic trade options for the padres.

Estrada pre-arb 4 years of control left

Adam one year left at 6.5m (arb)

Laureano one year left 6.5m (sheets to LF)

Wandy Peralta 4.4m with another 4.4m player option. This would be a salary dump but given what similar relievers are getting his contract maybe movable

Other relievers outside of Miller or Morejon could possibly be moved. Similar to Estrada but less established. I don’t see more than two of any combination being moved.

Less likely but could be moved

Cronenworth would net next to nothing if they can find a team to take his whole contract. This would be a pure salary dump unless they pay down some of his contract. Some will say they need to either way.

Pivetta I find the least likely given the padres pitching needs. To go along with his opt outs lowering his value.

It’s not salary relief. It’s to create additional salary to add more starters. That only works if the get some real value trading Pivetta. Which he does have value but it’s limited

Padres have money still to spend. Your idea forms a rotation worse than doing nothing.

You’re not going to get a good cheap pitcher for Pivetta.

Then signing two dudes who don’t move the needle.

Far more creative ways to get the starters they need without trading Pivetta.

Padres have around 25m to spend to equal the money they spent last year…via COTS.

They have other guys they could trade to get back players and or additional salary to spend elsewhere where.

For example they could trade Adam and save 6.5m and still at least get something decent in return.

Wandy Peralta and his 4.4m should be movable.

Some talk of Laureano and his 6.5m being moved and getting something decent back. With sheets playing LF.

Of course cronenworth and his 12m aav.

All of those guys make better sense than moving Pivetta and his 20m. No sense in moving a very good starter to room for a couple of 4/5 starter options. They already have those types in Sears.

They could move a guy like Estrada and get a good return. Flipping him and other current prospects for a starter far better than anything you have mentioned.

      All while keeping Pivetta.

The pitchers you named aren’t that much more appealing than the crap ones the padres already have…plus they wouldn’t have Pivetta. Hence making the rotation the same if not worse.

The Padres can upgrade those crappy last 2-3 starters and keep Pivetta.

Adam makes some sense if his 6.5m and a prospect gets them another starter.

That’s far better than trading Pivetta their current number 1 for some cheap scrubs.

With your ideas that might as well cancel the season.

No they can’t QO him which is fine. Would be a 4th round pick anyways. Not a big deal to keep a good pitcher. Though you want to trade him for a bag of balls to free up 20m to spend on some crap.

Cronie gets a bad rap- his contract is an actual underpay; his WAR/$ is way above average (factoring the ever-so-popular $8.5MM+ per WAR digit.) The rub on Cronie might be the last contract year, but even then he’ll have earned positive value on the overall contract. Tough to trade for or away, yet he’s equally irreplaceable in the field. Unique case of being a great player… under a decent contract… yet nobody (yet?) will give dollar-to-dollar value.
The only real money dump tradees could be Wandy or Matsui, but even then those fellas are solid mop-up guys. Those innings could come cheaper, but there’s no value in the potential return(s).
I would love to see more than one of Dustin May, Houser, Kelly, Eflin, Civale signed. (In that order of preference!)
Roster holds steady at 36. Preller will get some rotation pieces and probably try to pluck a DFA in ST. Roster is basically set, outside of the rotation.

Agree totally on Cro. The WAR value says it all. It just isn’t a “bad” contract. Hosmer was a bad contract (can we still bring that up now that it is over?). I didn’t mind him but it was over pay for what he provided all but maybe 1 year.

I’m looking at 2 of D May, Merrill Kelly, Houser, Gonsolin (2 year type deal), a few other insert here types. That 20 mil could get 2 of those guys and maybe a low end bat – is Goldie still out there?

Concur. I would only entertain moving Wandy and/or Matsui… and that would only be for relief funds to spread elsewhere (other than 2 different $4MM junk-time guys.) Heck, I’d trade both away to retain Arraez or try to get Goldy for 1B.

I like Brito, big arm. I’m lowkey big on Hoeing potentially playing his way into the rotation, too. I wanted to see Morejon make it as the 3/4/5, but now I doubt they remove him from the ‘pen. So little known, so much more to find out! Go Pads

Yea trading away Pivetta to sign guys much worse than him is such a good idea.

How about keep Pivetta and sign a guy or two much worse than him.

Houser is really not that good. Kelly is fine but still a down grade from Pivetta

Laureano fits the Padres perfectly. He is a good fielding LF with some right handed pop they need. Plus is being paid hardly anything for his production last year.

The reason above are why teams would want him including the padres. The padres have said they view sheets as a LF/DH type. Which also currently fits the Padres.

The question is if they can’t get the starting pitching they need what do they do. That’s why this trading Pivetta, Tatis stuff has been circling out there.

So if the quest for starting pitching isn’t going well and some team gives up something the Padres need to fill the quest of starting pitching then it wouldn’t surprise me if they traded him.

There are a number of other options I’d look at before trading Laureano but it can’t 100% be ruled out. The starting pitching need is that big.

Michael King is still within the Padres budget for 2-3 year extension if they think he can stay healthy.

The Padres could use a slugging 1B or a multi positional player who could rotate with others @ 1b/DH/OF.

Pivett could be traded and net a few strong young players inluding 1-2 pitchers and perhaps a depth INF or OF who can hit and play D. ONLY IF the Padres y can backfill his rotation spot, otherwise better of just keeping him.

One of the Padres dependable middle relievers traded could net a young starting pitcher and another young two way INF or OF or someone who can play both INF & OF.

Every year people seem to think the Padres are broke, so the must trade one of their big contracts. And the only big contract that would be easily moved is Tatis.

However, their first mistake is thinking the Padres are broke, and their second is thinking the Pads would actually consider trading Tatis.

Yeah, they’re not broke. I do think they’re reducing the spending from when Peter Seidler ran things, But even if they are cutting back on the spending, IMO Tatis would still be the last guy they’d trade. To trade that level of talent at his age, with the bargain he is, in regard to market value, would be dumb. Yeah they could get a haul back for him, but what would be the point if they aren’t rebuilding?

One thing is certain with the present Padres Ownership,
The Direction of the team can change on a dime from day to day, week to week, season to season.

The Padres would look even better to potential buyers if they clear out a few of those very large contracts.

Plus with a work stoppage almost certainly coming after the 2026 season and into early 2027, team revenues may be harder to cover for a team like the Padres pushing theri financial limits the past few years.

The Padres could fetch a “Kings Ransome” trading Tatis Jr. and set their team up for short and long term pennant contention into the 2030’s with the truckload of top, young major league talent and almost major league ready top prospects received back for Tatis Jr.
It would be a franchise changing trade.

A Tatis Jr. blockbuster trade deal could appeal to a New Ownership group as it would remove Tatis Jr’s long term contract and financial commitements and help clean up the Padres financial books.

And the talent acquired in a Tatis Jr.deal, could backfill multiple positions, make the team younger and more cost effective and lead give the Padres team the option of dealing a few more of their veteran players with huge contracts that could restructure the team on a much more sound future financial and talent footing.

At some point, depending on New Potential Team buyers’ preferences, the Padres team direction could change again leading to major changes in the team while still competing for pennants on a yearly basis.

It would not be a surprising development at all

If they want to sell to one of the investment groups that just wants to collect MLB welfare, they will clear costs. If they want to sell to a person or group that is interested in winning Tatis will be a huge selling point for them.

Would prefer someone like Steve Ballmer or Stan Kroneke buy the Padres. Both those gents have more money than they know what to do with and, very likely, wouldn’t mind running a team with a top 5 payroll in MLB. And,they would not mind adding free agents who could put the Padres “over the top” in competing for championships.

I really believed Alonso would get 5/150. I thought it would be Mets though. That said, the guy had barely averaged 3 WAR the past 3 seasons – 28, 29 and 30. At 10 mil / WAR this is just a head scratcher. Does he get the same pitches in O’s lineup? Wish O’s the best as they are an interesting young team to pull for on AL.

My favorite fun Tatis fact is that despite them putting him on the roster to start 2019, they would have gotten control of his 2025 season anyway because you don’t accrue major league service time while on the restricted list which means he did not accrue a full year of service time in 2022 which means he failed to accrue six full years by the end of 2024. Obviously the extension makes this purely academic but even without it they still would have had him on the team in 2025. Unless of course he doesn’t use the banned substance if they don’t extend him because he knows that doing so would delay his free agency by a year.
