A potential comeback story popped up out of the blue in February when the Rockies signed former star hurler Ubaldo Jimenez to a minor league deal. In a plot twist last week, the Rox opted not to include the 36-year-old right-hander in their 60-man player pool. Not to be deterred from weaving one more tale on the mound, Jimenez tells Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post that he’s still hoping to find another shot with another organization.
“No, I’m not thinking about retirement yet,” Jimenez tells Saunders. “I’ve been blessed with a healthy arm, and I still have a lot of passion for the game.”
Jimenez, a renowned nice-guy in the locker room, adds that he was “caught off-guard” by his omission from the 60-man pool. It seems the Rockies included him on every Zoom meeting with the pitching staff during the shutdown and kept tabs on his throwing program. The righty had hoped for a chance to resume his quest for an unlikely MLB return but found himself without a Summer Camp invitation.
While he had some harsh words for the Rockies, Jimenez also said he’s trying not to take it personally. “I resigned myself to accepting that it’s just their kind of way of acting and operating their business,” he said of the surprise non-invitation. But Jimenez adds that he’s at peace and doesn’t harbor any “hard feelings” towards his former outfit.
We’ll have to wait and see whether any other organization thinks there’s enough left in the tank to give Jimenez another look. He has had many good seasons in his dozen MLB campaigns, including 851 innings of 3.66 ERA in a Colorado uniform, but hasn’t appeared in the majors since 2017 and wasn’t very effective in his final two seasons of action. Jimenez did get strong results in an eight-start run in the Dominican Winter League this past year, turning in a 3.03 ERA with 8.2 K/9 against 3.9 BB/9.
DarkSide830
huh, i thought he was included.
bucketbrew35
So did he?
bencole
To who??
DarkSide830
a catcher, probably. that’s generally the direction in which a pitcher thows the ball.

You’ve not seen me pitch. I’d have to supply the 1st & 3rd base coaches, plus the respective umpires with full crash helmets…

Just the Rockies being the Rockies. Guys get cut on short notice all the time but this dude has been part of their franchise for a long time. Surely they could’ve given him an earlier heads up more than two days.
Gwynn4TheWin(field)
Classless on the Rockies part, but doubtless anyone’s really surprised. Another smart and thought out move on their part. Wonder what it would take for the GM to get the boot . . . ♂️
YankeesBleacherCreature
It’s not the GM, it’s ownership. I haven’t understood most of their moves since the team’s inception.

Does not including Jiminez on the 60 man camp roster make him a free agent? Being on a minor league contract, he can be added to the roster before the season. Unless he has an out clause in his contract, he is still a member of the Rockies. Now if he were added and then removed that would make him a free agent. I think. Depending on if there are any openings on the Rockies, he can still be added. Just as the Orioles added Mason Williams, a non roster invitee, today

NO !!!
All American Johnsonville Dogs
And the lineup for which ever team he pitches against goes wild.

No one can take away the start he had to the 2010 season. God bless him.

That was an epic start

One of the greatest runs of recent years, dude is a legend for me ever since

Remember at the all star game Charlie Manuel was the n.l. Coach and chose him to start over cliff lee and Halladay ….. his own guys! For crying out loud man. It was one of the great stretches EVER.
Even with Baltimore he would pitch poorly and get sent down(accept assignment even though he didn’t have to) and work his way back up almost every year lol. Then when he did come back he would string together a bunch of good starts. He is a roller coaster for sure but always fun to watch.

Your recollections of Jimenez’ time with Baltimore are horribly mistaken. Ubaldo was never optioned or sent to the minors in 4 seasons with the O’s. Believe me — I prayed for it after every outing but it never happened. The only time he ever pitched for an O’s farm team was at the beginning of 2014 when he was stretching out at the very beginning of the season. Once he reached the 25-man roster in early 2014 Jimenez never went to the minors as an Oriole.

Ubaldo was never demoted to the minors, you are right about that. On several occasions, he was demoted to the bullpen. Unfortunately, he is the type of pitcher that has to be stretched out for a long period of time before he can come into a game. Regular relievers can usually get warm quickly. For instance, probably not a good idea to put Ubaldo in a tie winner take all game in the 11th inning when he isn’t warmed up enough. Especially with a reliever who was 47-47 in save situations still available

Call Buck Showalter.

And we wonder why a “nice-guy” player in Arenado wants to leave CO. All it takes is one bad egg in the FO to piss off players.
All the best Ubaldo! With plenty of players headed to Covid IL, another team is sure to give him a shot. Maybe Orioles will sign him back; after all, what do they have to lose?
jerseyjoe
…. more games with him pitching!

Both are rumored to be nice guys in the locker room. Once Ubaldo bought all the pitchers in Baltimore Rolex watches.
On a separate note I hope Nolan leaves Colorado. He deserves better
Appalachian_Outlaw
I’m not talking about the city of Colorado itself- but because of the ownership, and the way they treat players, might that franchise be a candidate for least desirable FA destination?
Ironman_4life
Colorado is a state.
Appalachian_Outlaw
It was early. Thoughts are hard before breakfast and coffee. Haha.

Hey bud, you’re making us Appalachian folk look bad. City of Colorado?

Uh.
Definitely won’t be holding that against you, @slowcurve.
Suggested edit for the title. Ubaldo Jimenez Intends To Keep “Pitching”
Phiilies2020
Jimenez might have a two or three year run as a serviceable reliever left in that arm if he commits to tuning his craft to full time relief.

I intend to pitch in 2020 also… but I suck… so the odds aren’t in my favor unless I get drunk a pretend to pitch game 7 of the World Series in my living room again…

This is far from the first time the Rockies have gotten some bad press, but, it’s a short season and there’s no minors. It’s pretty easy to argue that it is not a very good time to waste finite roster spots on reclaim projects. It’s been a long time since he pitched last, and a longer time since he pitched well last. If he could go down to AAA to see if he can put up some numbers he’d probably be on that roster.

Where on earth did they dig up that deer in the headlights picture?
wg22659
You all fail to mention he hasn’t pitched in the major leagues since 2017, and they were the team that brought him to spring training. He was far from impressive, he’s a great human being, but hasn’t been a good pitcher for years. You all would be the first to complain if they kept him and he pitched poorly.
