Braves Place Ronald Acuña Jr. On 10-Day IL

By George Miller | August 15, 2020 at 3:22pm CDT

The Braves have placed outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to Wednesday) due to left wrist inflammation, according to Gabe Burns of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The hope is that he’ll be ready to return to the team next weekend. Next Friday will mark the first day he’s eligible to come off the IL. Right-handed pitcher Chad Sobotka was recalled, taking Acuña’s spot on the active roster.

Acuña has been dealing with discomfort in his wrist since Tuesday, when he was scratched from a game against the Yankees. He hasn’t played since then, and traveled back to Atlanta while his team will embark on a weekend series in Miami.

Initially, Atlanta hoped that Acuña would be ready to rejoin the team’s starting lineup by Monday, but after his soreness persisted into this weekend, it became apparent that he’d require a stint on the IL.

Of course, Acuña’s absence will lead many to speculate whether the door has opened for highly-touted outfielder Cristian Pache—just 21 years old—to make his Major League debut. While he hasn’t gotten the call yet, he may still be due for a promotion; Sobotka may simply be needed to give Brian Snitker another available bullpen arm for the next day or two.

Sobotka has been up-and-down for the Braves throughout this season, making three bullpen appearances for the team. He’s yet to surrender an earned run, striking out one batter and walking two. For his career, he’s averaging 11.7 K/9 with a 4.47 ERA.

Hate to see a generational talent who all teams wish they had on their roster on his team friendly contract not play.

22 years old already batting .286/.366/.531 good for an OPS+ of 131 in his young career. Acuna is going to be fun to watch for a long time.

Clepto, I literally clicked on the comments here to see what that guy was going to say. If I am giving him crap when he is hilariously wrong (often), the as a decent human being, I owe it to him to read his gloats.

      Fortunately, the opportunity is rare.

The Braves do that to one player every year. This year it’s Sobotka’s turn.

The Dodgers do it more than any other team. It’s where the Braves get it from, probably. Anthopoulos did come out of the LA organization. The Dodgers do a really good job of treating the farm like an extension of the major league club and a valuable resource. Just how ethical it is may be up for debate though.

This season doesnt exist. It’s a figment of Manfred’s imagination. Hes already killed Soroka now hes gunning for Acuna. Next Freddie’s leg falls off because why not?

Must mean me. Good, yes. Great. Maybe someday. Overrated. Yes. Ill take Soto or Yelich any day. Hot dog, absolutely. I’d probably want him on my 28 man roster. Doesn’t mean I have to like the guy. Remember, 200 strikeouts sure negates 30 or 40 HR.

There are not 28 players in baseball better than Acuna. With his talent and contract, if there was a real life MLB fantasy draft, he’s at worst a top 10 pick and very conceivably the top overall pick.

Acuna hasn’t ever struck out 200 times but I can see why you exaggerate but for your argument, I need to make up a few to be as right as you can.

But I would love to know how you account for the value of each strike out. You said it easily accounts for 30 or 40 home runs but then, there is a lot of difference in value between 30 and 40 so I don’t think you put much thought into it.

Also, I don’t think 180 strike outs (more accurate than 200) negates 40 home runs, 101 RBI’s, 127 runs scores 37 stolen bases and that 101 RBI’s was mostly from the lead off spot. That 37 stolen bases and 127 runs scored both lead the league.

Oh and don’t forget his 5.7 WAR which thinks it HAS evaluated his total stats ONCLUDING the strikeouts you cling to as your only bullet to fire at the guy.

Acuna is also young. ATL hopes he continues to get better as he’s already a force. But, can’t really argue with Yelich or Soto or Bellinger. Atlanta has certain spots to address. Acuna is not one of them.

Pache isn’t ready maybe? Maybe he is to busy making cozies and doilies for the old folks home? Maybe the Braves are controlled by a flock of pigeons who only make decisions intended to frustrate you?

Within the last week he got back to working out full time after being injured from mid July. He’ll be called up if Acuna is out for an extended period of time.

I think it’s partly a result of the short pre-season training. A lot of these strains would normally have taken place during ST, with time for the player to rest and overcome them and still have time to get into game shape.

Or the lack of actual pregame preparation like stretching and running. Maybe a little less time in the weight room and playing video games with more time getting ready before a game would help?

It’s a shame we all can’t take off for 2 weeks, still get paid and keep our jobs/businesses for discomforts, muscle stiffness and inflammations. Anyone else getting tired of professional sports?

Meanwhile, high school and college athletic programs around the country are canceling seasons for safety reasons, but baseball players can’t participate because they are physically “uncomfortable”. (Sigh). Sorry for the rant.
