Mets Claim Guillermo Heredia

By Steve Adams | August 28, 2020 at 2:52pm CDT

The Mets have claimed outfielder Guillermo Heredia off waivers from the Pirates, tweets Tim Healey of Newsday. Pittsburgh designated Heredia for assignment earlier this week when they claimed Carson Fulmer off waivers from the Tigers. Heredia has been optioned to the Mets’ alternate training site in Brooklyn.

Heredia inked a one-year deal, $1MM contract with the Pirates in the offseason but played in just eight games and took 18 plate appearances before the Bucs optioned him to their own alternate site. Because the Mets are claiming Heredia, they’ll be on the hook for the remainder of his prorated salary — a total of about $172K between now and season’s end.

Heredia has appeared in 390 Major League games, mostly with the Mariners, and posted a combined .239/.317/.339 batting line. As a solid outfield defender with a bit of speed and a career .275/.338/.400 batting line against lefties, he can be a useful bench piece when he’s at his best. The Mets just cut Juan Lagares — a player with a comparable skill set — loose earlier today when they designated him for assignment when Jake Marisnick was activated from the injured list. Unlike Heredia, however, Lagares couldn’t be optioned to the alternate site without his consent, given that he has more than five years of big league service.

I would love to see Lagares succeed as a Buc! When he’s on his game he’s a very exciting player to watch.

I loved heredia in Seattle. He’s got a little pop in his bat but you can’t expect anything more than average at best. Love that glove in LF. 10/10 smile

The Mets fanbase is the best in baseball and the ownership is among the worst. We deserve better. They need to sell the team to someone who will actually do what it takes to get a WC.

“Doing what it takes” implies spending money like it means nothing to you. I have no interest in seeing the Mets do that. That’s why I’ve hated the entitled Yankees and their obnoxious fans since the 70s. I’d rather have a team that earns their success, like the Cardinals and Braves, than buys it like the Yankees.

The biggest delusion the average fan suffers from is : spending money on free agents = winning.

The Pirates should send a dozen roses to the Mets for saving them $172K. Well, maybe roses are out of their price range. Maybe they could find some dandelions outside around the stadium and send them postage due.

No one is sending prospects at this time. And both players the Pirates have moved wasn’t cutting it in Pittsburgh. Give them a chance elsewhere.

Unless you are one of those guys who love to hoard junk as a way of your life style. That explains why you feel the need to hold onto rental/junk players. I’m glad you don’t hold any higher position to the Pirates or any other club.

If you are looking to the Pirates cast offs for the push to get into the playoffs you need to question you personnel department for next year. Start there then management.

The Pirates got $243,300 for Dyson. How can you pass up a deal like that? Nutting can buy another small town newspaper and lay off half the staff and pay the rest minimum wage.

They weren’t paid 243k. Complete opposite, that is more $ they are allowed to spend on international prospects. Each team is only allowed to spend so much but they can trade that spending $. It would have been 250k but Sox didn’t have that much left.
