Padres Recall Jorge Ona

By Connor Byrne | September 7, 2020 at 4:41pm CDT

The Padres announced that they’ve called up outfield prospect Jorge Ona. They optioned righty Luis Patino to their alternate training site in a corresponding move. Ona will debut as the Padres’ designated hitter against Colorado on Monday, per AJ Cassavell of MLB.com.

As Cassavell notes, the hope is that Ona will give the Padres more power from the right side of the plate. They were counting on high-end prospect Luis Campusano, whom they promoted Friday, to provide that. However, Campusano went on the injured list on Sunday after three at-bats (and a home run) because of a left wrist sprain.

Unlike Campusano, Ona is not a top 100 caliber prospect, though the Cuba native did join the club for a pricey $7MM bonus in 2016. Ona was obviously regarded as an international gem at the time, but he hasn’t quite lived up to the hype yet. Still, four years after signing, he remains a promising part of the Padres’ loaded farm system, ranking as one of their top 30 prospects at MLB.com (No. 24), FanGraphs (30) and Baseball America (30). The 23-year-old was dominant last season in Double-A, where he slashed .348/.417/.539 in 102 plate appearances, but Ona saw his campaign come to an end in July when he underwent right shoulder surgery.

Oña was already on the 40-man roster. Became Rule 5 eligible last offseason.

SIgned in 2016 so it counts towards his Rule 5 count even if he didn’t play and was 19 when he signed which means he was eligible a year early.

Last time they had a rule 5 roster crunch they traded Wick, Brewer, Lockett, and others.

They actually made out pretty well acquiring Esteban Quiroz, Jason Vosler, Ignacio Feliz.

Given Prellers track record of trading scraps for useful pieces- Shields for Tatis Jr, Rodney for Paddack, Solarte for Olivares, Benoit for De Los Santos, Avila for Norris – im sure Preller and the Padres will be fine.

Preller will trade guys in the rule 5 for intriguing lottery tickets where rule 5 won’t be an issue for years, much like he did last time.

Yes, yes. Darkside is much smarter than MLB GMs. Tell us more about how you would run your championship team.

@Mike Obviously Darkside already knew that. He knows everything. He must be referring to another Rule 5 draft that no one knows about because he is so smart.

If it wasn’t you would have checked and seen that Oña was already on the 40-man. I will give you the Campusano callup tho.

Ona is already on the 40-man roster and the crazy trading spree Preller just went on means that even Reggie Lawson and Tucapito Marcano should be added to the 40 man before Rule 5. The best player we are likely to lose is Mason Thompson.

Call me crazy, but I think we’ll live without Mason Thompson.

He’s already on the 40 man, recalling him has literally zero impact on the roster and Rule V.

Kick the tires? He’s 22 and has had 3 minor league season lol. Jesus.

How about we call it what it is. A september call up. Same thing with Campusano.

They get a little taste of MLB pitching with platoon advantage at DH, maybe see the field couple times (which they would have most likely when rosters expended to 40 in september). Then, spend next year between AA and AAA if there is a minor league season and hopefully ready by 2022.

Dude, get a life. Its just sad you chose to make an account just to troll instead of actually discussing baseball. Seriously. No friends? No siblings? Did you not get enough attention as a kid or something? You’re not a Norman Bates are you?

Get a productive hobby. Try meet-up or some other group activity platform. Don’t be weird. Dress nice. Make some friends. I believe in you. Don’t let me down.
