Phillies Outright Ronald Torreyes

By Connor Byrne | September 17, 2020 at 4:52pm CDT

SEPT. 17: Torreyes cleared waivers and was outrighted to Lehigh Valley, the Phillies announced.

SEPT. 15: The Phillies have designated infielder Ronald Torreyes for assignment, per a team announcement. His roster spot will go to left-hander Garrett Cleavinger, whom they recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Torreyes lasted just a few days on the roster of the Phillies, who selected his contract Sept. 11. The 28-year-old went on to hit 1-for-7 before the Phillies designated him. Formerly a Dodger, Yankee and Twin, Torreyes has batted .277/.306/.369 with four home runs and five steals across 638 plate appearances in the majors. His .273/.314/.365 line in 1,080 PA in Triple-A doesn’t look much different.

Cleavinger, 26, could now be in line for his first major league experience. The Phillies acquired him from the Orioles for righty Jeremy Hellickson back in 2017, and Cleavinger has since shown he’s capable of producing at the Double-A level. He threw 51 2/3 innings of 3.66 ERA/2.73 FIP ball with 14.46 K/9 and 5.92 BB/9 there last year.

That’s kind of surprising when they made to move to clear a spot for Torreyes by designating walker I assumed they had a longer-term stay in mind than 4 days! Haha but I guess they feel they’ve got adequate bench/UT depth even without either of them.

Plans changed when the Phils lost two of their star hitters and two startering pitchers. They are completely depleted after the injuries and 5 double headers in 15 days, and don’t even have enough arms to finish a series.

Shew!! You KNOW it’s a weird season when a career slash like that earns you a SEVEN at bat chance to stick around…

There’s a lot of these machinations going on. The Braves brought up Newcomb and sent him right back down. Never threw a pitch in anger.

This team seems to find ways to lose, mostly because of their bullpen of gas cans.

I would give Workman his release. He is a cancer in the pen. Either that or have the stoopid catchers stop calling for his curve ball…….it is clobbered every time he throws it.

Another day closer to John Middleton’s Sept. 28th press conference to announce the “retirement “ of MacFail and the “reassignment” of Klentak.

I hope your post is prescient. Have been saying for over two years, MK is in way over his head.

Cigar Guy needs to get rid of all these Ivy League analytical nerds and replace them with true baseball men who use their eyes and ears instead of laptops.

Maybe Clint Eastwood (“Trouble With The Curve”) and his on-screen daughter, Aimee Adams, are available!

Sadly, no one will get fired from this. It’s a 60 game season. Middleton has to open the wallets again to fix the entire pen. Also need 2 starters. There’s a fair chance Realmuto is gone too. Nightmare scenario.

    Von:

Sixty game season or not, I don’t think Cigar Guy is gonna be that patient and keep everyone around. Way too many games lost that should have been won. I’m certain Cigar Guy feels the same frustration as we fans do.

BTW, does Andy McPhail even have an office at CBP? If he does, he must have a permanent “Do Not Disturb” sign on his door. Don’t recall the last time I saw him or read a quote from him in the paper. Really, has anyone even checked to see if the guy is still upright and breathing?

Klentak? Sorry, but the kid has to go. A GM can’t produce four seasons of plain vanilla baseball and still keep his job. To wit, here we are in September with our W-L record hovering slightly above or slightly below .500 like it was in 2017, 2018 and 2019. I need more than a Gentleman’s C as a grade and that’s the best grade I can give Klentak.
