Yankees Re-Sign Luis Avilan To Minor League Deal

By George Miller | September 6, 2020 at 5:18pm CDT

The Yankees have reached an agreement on a new minor-league contract with LHP Luis Avilan, according to Kristie Ackert of the NY Daily News.

Avilan, who signed with New York on a minor-league deal last winter, was released from the Yankees organization in late August amidst a bit of a roster crunch due to the injury bug repeatedly striking in New York. At the time, though, it was expected that the Yankees would make an effort to bring Avilan back in some fashion.

Prior to his release, Avilan hit the 10-day injured list due to inflammation in his left shoulder. Outside of a dud (two runs and three hits in just one-third of an inning) in his last appearance before going on the IL—which may be connected to his shoulder issue—Avilan has really been quite solid for the Yankees this year. All told, he has managed a 4.32 ERA in 8 1/3 innings in pinstripes, while striking out more than a batter per inning, on average.

They better do something. 20 games left and they’re fizzling out. May not even make the postseason if they keep it up.

Kinda surprised to see he’s didn’t get a 1yr prorated minimum MLB contract

Well I mean if he gets called up to the majors he will essentially get that… are you saying you’re surprised they didn’t already put him on the 40-man roster? Or are you just talking $?

Release Cole, Sanchez and Stanton, see if anyone bites. Unfortunately no team would.

I know the whole point of the move was to speed up the game and everything — and after watching the Red Sox/Blue Jays (almost) 5-hour 9-inning game today – let me be the first to say… they’ve still got some work to do. But the 3-batter minimum rule still bothers me, and it does mostly because it hurts guys like Avilan — who essentially had his ‘job’ removed from baseball altogether. He’s one of the best LOOGY’s in baseball… but not that position/role doesn’t really exist and I just can’t help but feel bad for guys like this who spent their whole lives working to be a ML-player and then halfway through their career because of a rule change… they’ve essentially just had the rug pulled out from under them. I’m not even saying I necessarily disagree with the rule… it just sucks for the handful of guys who it impacted the most. Like unintentionally the rule change basically cost 10 or so guys their jobs. Clearly Avilan (and others) have adjusted and just have to face Rh-hitters now… I just feel bad for the small handful of guys who took the brunt of the change.

Do the math on a true LOOGY though.

If you’re a situational pitcher, odds are you don’t enter to start an inning when it’s low leverage and nobody is on base. So likely there’s at least first guy out when you enter MOST of the time. ONE OUT.

You might enter as a LOOGY mid inning. It could be the guy before you imploded. But that means the prior arm was either left in too long (manager issue) or the guy who was in was ineffective (cite to manager issue, or, a problem with another arm.) Either way an effective LOOGY should MOST of the time get his man. That’s a second, or third, out.

If the LOOGY had 2 outs he only needs to face one extra man to get his third out.

But, when you think about it, carrying someone on a MLB roster who’s job is to literally get one out a game, and not even in every game, seems excessive and a poor use of roster space.

3 batter rule is dumb, but, I won’t mourn loogys.

my thoughts…The following guys are f/a’s in 2021 with their current salaries. Do not resign them.. : Tanaka $23.0M……Paxton $12.5M……Gardner $10.0M……Happ $17.0. All thsi adds up to $62.5M !!!! Go out and get Bauer (he is not a $23.0M guy…..Brad Keller on KC…….Realmuto ….Springer (no more than 3 yrs)…..Didi (bring him back, won’t cost that much )……but in the interim must trarde Sanchez and Andujar. If I hear one more time about being under team control….I dont know what I will do……Then offer Judge a 5 yr deal..no more than that, Any chime in’s ????
