Starling Marte Fractures Left Pinkie

By Connor Byrne | October 1, 2020 at 1:00pm CDT

Oct. 1: Marte saw a specialist today, who confirmed a fracture of the outfielder’s fifth metacarpal in his left hand, tweets Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald. He’s been fitted for a protective brace and is undergoing treatment to reduce the swelling.

The fact that today’s scheduled tilt between the Marlins and Cubs has been postponed due to the weather in Chicago could play to the Marlins’ advantage, as that will give the Fish another day to help regain some mobility in Marte’s hand and reduce the swelling. It’s still not clear to what extent he’ll be available or whether he’ll eventually need to be replaced — squeezing a glove, catching a fly-ball and gripping a bat with a broken bone in one’s hand isn’t exactly easy — but the team has yet to make a roster move. At the very least, Marte could be a potential pinch-runner.

Sept. 30: The Marlins earned their first playoff win since 2003 on Wednesday with a 5-1 victory over the Cubs in Game 1 of the teams’ wild-card series, but Miami did not come out of it unscathed. Marlins center fielder Starling Marte exited in the ninth inning after taking a pitch off the left hand from Dan Winkler. It turns out that Marte suffered a fractured pinkie, per Craig Mish of Sports Grid. This could end Marte’s season, but the Marlins are hopeful he will return at some point, according to Mish.

Marte, whom the Marlins surprisingly acquired from the Diamondbacks before the Aug. 31 trade deadline, got off to a solid start in Arizona this year before his production fell in Miami. He posted an .827 OPS as a Diamondback and a .701 mark as a Marlin, leading to a .281/.340/.430 line with six home runs and 10 stolen bases in 250 plate appearances.

No matter how their season ends, the Marlins will have to decide how to proceed with Marte once the winter comes. The soon-to-be 32-year-old Marte has a $12.5MM club option or a $1MM buyout for 2021, the former Pirate’s last season of team control. It seems like a reasonable enough figure for the Marlins to put on their books in a year, but it’s worth noting the D-backs were reportedly leaning against exercising it before they traded Marte. If it’s severe enough (and there’s no indication it is), this injury could affect Miami’s plans.

    1. Get well soon.
    2. I doubt the Marlins would have given up a starting pitcher for him if they weren’t planning to exercise the option.

They said they wanted him for both years. I know you can’t believe what front offices say, most of the time;but, in this case, I do.

Yeah local beat reporters claimed it came up with him and the team said they plan on bringing him back. Marte doesnt want to move much with everything going on in his life.

Cubs really losing to a AAA team lol. Before you talk about the Mets. A healthy Mets team would sweep the marlins here…. cubs are healthy as hell

Mets went 6-4 against this AAA team. Half the team missed the season due to COVID. You’re the biggest Mets homer here bud, your team is a joke. Take a seat and watch the marlins play postseason ball while your Mets sit at home with ya

      Look who’s back from hiding.

As I stated elsewhere, I’d like to congratulate MetsFan22 for being correct on so many statements this year. Among them, are the following:

“Even in 60 games, the Marlins will finish 15 games out of fourth place; 25 games out of first place.”

“The Braves aren’t as good as people think. The Mets are better.”

“Mets bullpen and pitching staff is the best in the division.”

“Mets have the best lineup in the division.”

“Mets have a better lineup than the Braves…Ozuna is not as good a hitter as any of the Mets OFs.”

      During the season:

“The Marlins will be in last place very soon.”

“Mets have had more health problems on their roster than all of the other teams in the division. Mets’ health and roster problems are worse than the Braves’ and the Marlins’ health and roster problems.”

I love when people make statements in those same 60-game seasons to oppose others that said anything can happen in a 60-game season, but then want to use the 60-game season excuse (among many other excuses) when things go horribly wrong for their team that ends up finishing in last place.

I guess it’ll be 9 more years of excuses in every season this decade that goes against your predictions.

But I understand your plight. You only stick to SNY and E!SPN as your sports news sources. When a person listens to networks that cater to NY and Boston, and you don’t pay much attention to your division rivals, and your team’s broadcast team is so homerish that they can make the 62 Mets sound better than the 27 Yankees, while making sure that they try to convince everyone that the 86 Mets are the greatest team ever and the 69 Mets were baseball’s only ‘Miracle Team’, you’re going to miss a lot of information that could make your opinions less homerish and less blinded with Mets Beer Goggles.

After all, it’s not your fault that you have no choice but to listen listen to circus clowns like Keith Hernandez who tried to make scrubs like Juan Lagares and Matt Den Dekker sound like they were as good as guys like Harper, Stanton, Yelich, etc. the same way they try to make Nimmo and Conforto sound as good as Soto, Harper, and Acuna. Or Darling, a very knowledgeable baseball guy who is forced by his bosses to make overrated Syndergaard sound as good as Scherzer, Verlander, Kershaw and the real aces in MLB.

No offense to Alcantra but the Cubs offense is a freaking joke!

I like Ross as a manager and hope he does well but he (as well as the Cubs brass) needs to look at more than just the big picture numbers and pay more attention to how individual players fit into line up construction.

I like Caratini but Nico and Kipnis bring a much needed aspect to the Cubs line up (contact in Hoerners case and the ability to make a productive out in Kipnis). Moving Baez down and splitting him between Heyward and the bottom of the line up that was productive in the first several games of the season was a bad decision also. Let your home run hitters swing for the fences but bunch them together, let the bottom of the line up put the ball in play and scrap out some hits and runs like they did early on. Having Baez playing with his all or nothing approach when we need to move runners into scoring position is bad baseball.

As a Cub fan, I’m not going to hold my breath in regards to a line up change and I will hope for the best but I’m certainly not expecting a win unless Sixto is serving up home runs.

Sad that a White Sox fan feels this way. Prior to the season, when I saw it was set as a 60-game season, I jokingly predicted that the Marlins would beat the White Sox in 7 games for the World Series.

Amazing how that joke is still possible to happen.

Marlins are this year’s Cinderella team. Even heading into the final week of the season, I thought my Phillies would supplant them as the second placed finisher in the NL East. Well, didn’t happen. My guys are home watching TV and using smart phones to set up their early morning tee times.

Rooting for Goliath has never been my thing except when Wilt Chamberlain played in Philly. Thus I am now an unabashed Marlins fan for the playoffs. One more W and it’s, Goodbye Cubbies”.

All the other playoff teams have issues right now except for Goliath a.k.a., the Dodgers. Padres without Lamet and Clevenger. Cardinals still don’t know who is gonna play in their OF each night, and it’s a toss up each night what pitcher will close for them. Reds and Brewers haven’t hit consistently all year.

So maybe the NLCS will come down to the scrappy Marlins vs. Goliath? The Marlins have decent enough starting pitching and a good to very good bullpen. Their hitters hit just enough to not make them pushovers.

Bold prediction Dept.: Marlins vs. Rays in the WS.

Sorry, you guys fill in the last blank by yourselves. But don’t ever count out a motivated David in any fight.

Man, Marte has been hit by pitches and suffered broken bones a few times in his career. He gets pitched inside a lot and he stands close to the plate and when he gets hit, it seems like in his hands. Feel bad that he gets to the playoffs but gets hit his first game.
