Yankees Notes: Voit, Anderson, Offseason

By Mark Polishuk | October 11, 2020 at 9:34am CDT

Just about every day in October corresponds with a memorable Yankees postseason moment, and October 11 is no exception.  It was on this day in 1943 that the Yankees clinched their tenth World Series title, defeating the Cardinals in Game Five on the strength of a complete game shutout from starter Spud Chandler.  While the World Series MVP award didn’t exist back in 1943, it’s safe to say that Chandler would have been the winner — the righty tossed complete games in both the first and fifth games of the series, allowing just one earned run over his 18 innings for an 0.50 ERA.  This brilliant performance capped off a dream year for Chandler, who led the American League in ERA, WHIP, K/BB rate, and wins while winning AL MVP honors.

Something of a forgotten star in Yankees history, Chandler was a late bloomer who didn’t make his MLB debut until age 29.  Chandler posted a 2.84 ERA over 1485 innings for New York between 1937-47 (missing most of 1944 and 1945 while serving in World War II), and had a sterling resume that included four All-Star appearances, two league ERA titles, three World Series rings, and that AL MVP award.

Some items on the modern-day Yankees…

  • Luke Voit will undergo an MRI on his foot today, as the slugger told reporters following the Yankees’ Game Five loss to the Rays on Friday.  While the MRI will reveal the specifics, Voit described his issue as a “classic case of plantar fasciitis.”  Voit’s lack of mobility became more apparent down the stretch, though he had apparently been dealing with the foot problem for much of the season, not that it stopped him from hitting .277/.338/.610 with a league-best 22 homers.
  • There has already been much speculation about how the Yankees will respond to their ALDS loss, though SNY.tv’s Andy Martino doesn’t believe any major free agent spending is in the works due to revenue losses from the 2020 season.  Since spending around baseball is expected to be down this offseason, Martino believes this benefits a Yankees organization that has been adept at finding and developing hidden-gem players in trades and signings.  Of course, the challenge is that the Rays have also been experts in this arena, and Martino notes that the Yankees and Rays have been mutually interested in some of each other’s players.  For instance, the Yankees had interest in Nick Anderson in 2018, before Anderson had even debuted in the majors and before Tampa Bay acquired the ace reliever from the Marlins in July 2019.  Likewise, the Rays looked into a deal for Mike Tauchman back when the outfielder was with the Rockies, prior to Tauchman’s trade to New York in March 2019.
  • Something of a contrast to Martino’s opinion is provided by Joel Sherman of the New York Post, who also believes the Yankees won’t spend much, and in fact might look to get payroll under the $210MM luxury tax threshold to avoid a third straight year of an escalating tax bill.  The one splurge Sherman figures the Yankees “pretty much have to” make is re-signing DJ LeMahieu, given the infielder’s overall importance to the team over the last two seasons.  But, in order to address roster issues like defense and an overload of right-handed hitting, Sherman suggests that Voit or Gleyber Torres could become trade chips to acquire some left-handed pop or some extra pitching depth.  New York would then need a shortstop to replace Torres, and Sherman suggests the team pick up a one-year rental in advance of signing one of the many star shortstops projected to be available in the 2021-22 free agent market.

Voit isn’t for sale. Torres is very unlikely. Gardner, Sanchez, and Andujar should be gone.

Was reading the Sherman article last night..It seemed as if he had finally STOPPED smoking something himself and opened his eyes to reality of the Yanks roster and how to proceed going forward.

Resigning Lemaheiu is going to cost around 100m and he’s the best all around hitter they have, plus could move to 1b. Voit is the odd man out that could be moved as the obvious trade piece for a team to get under the salary cap. Torres is another could be moved. A solid, in depth critique of the team.

If the concept of spending $100M to re-sign a player and then trading a player with a “hefty” $600k contract would work to get the Yankees UNDER the salary cap, then it does not shock me that you share realities with Sherman lol.

I am not sure whose post you are replying to but Sherman provides in his article, “[t]herefore, I am going to speculate that Hal Steinbrenner will order a payroll that drops beneath the $210 million luxury tax threshold for next season.” In the same paragraph Sherman suggests that the Yankees must re-sign LeMahieu and further speculates a 4year/$100M deal. Next he discusses trading Voit and/or Torres for pitching, however, the suggestions were either bullpen pieces for Voit straight up or Voit PLUS “however many pitching prospects” for German Marquez… He then suggests Torres for Zac Gallen. Marquez is set to earn over $50M over the next 4 seasons, while Gallen is arb eligible after 2 more seasons. Finally, he considers a deal trading Ottavino ($9M) for Crawford ($15M). So, Sherman initially speculates that the Yankees will have to drop payroll and then miraculously suggests that the best way to do this is to add nearly $40M in payroll. In sum, I have read the Sherman article and it is the same eye-rolling nonsense that he manages to be allowed to spew year after year.

And you may be lucky receiving a bag of balls for that trio. Three starting pitchers, a closer, proper center fielder and starting catcher will involve a massive amount of money and the farm system including clint and other current players on the roster.

          Be more triggered.

Selling low on Andujar and Sanchez. It is also a meme at this point of Yankees fans wanting to get rid of who ever has been bad the most recently, and saying who ever was hot the most recently is completely untouchable. Voit will never have a season as good as he just did. If someone is willing to buy at his current value, you gotta trade him. It is just a smart business decision.

Be more triggered by giving you facts that none of those guys were bought high on? I agree that a lot of Yankee fans overvalue the player’s trade value. Everyone wants us to trade Sanchez, but with how he was in 2018 and this season, a non tender is more likely than getting anything of value in a trade. But with the fact that none of these guys were bought high on I don’t really care for what we get for them other than Torres who rebounded in the postseason

Gleyber is too young and talented to give up on as a SS after 1 subpar defensive year. He has the arm and athleticism for the position. Most of his errors were easy plays that he just muffed…concentration lapses, etc. These are the kinds of things can be improved upon and at his age, it’s certainly not impossible for him to do so.

It’s far more likely the Yankees lose DJ than Gleyber. Could see them just not wanting to sign him. In that case, Gleyber shifts to 2nd and they can get a 1-year stop gap until they go hard on Lindor in 2021

Rocky.. Didi has earned more than a one year deal though. I also don’t see the Yankees breaking the bank for a SS like Lindor. They already have two three hundred million dollar guys locked into long term deals already. I’d just keep Torres at SS and go with the thought that his bat will more than make up for any defensive short comings. Re-sign DJLM, sign a mid rotation starter, some bullpen help and get after number 28.

You say “go back” to a defense 1st SS Rocky.. You do realize those few seasons where gregorious played SS in NY were the only ones they had where any there had any range for 15+y? Like since the early Jeter seasons?

Agreed SS and catcher 2 positions really need strong defense at, but SS not one NY has been known for range wide consistently overall for years and no knock intended. jeter could catch anything hit to him, just had lost pretty much his range nearing the end.

I never understood the whole “we need more lefty/righty pop, so let’s trade one of our best hitters”. Seems kind of pointless that if you want to have a line-up more effective vs RHP, out of all players, you’d trade Voit, who has hit righties just as good as lefties throughout his career, and Torres who’s easily held his own vs same handed pitching. You do what’s effective, not because you have an overload of one kind of handed player.

Yea, I don’t think teams in general put such an emphasis on this. It’s all the media. Plus, and I know this is often an unpopular opinion, but the specific statistical splits of a player don’t matter much. The advantage/disadvantage is across the board and doesn’t really vary from hitter to hitter. Stats that say otherwise are usually anomalous.

I disagree. Although the Dodgers had great line-ups the past few years, they were too left handed. They added Mookie and Will Smith has improved and it’s a much tougher line-up to pitch to now.

Both Smith and Betts are way more effecitve vs RHP than LHP. If you’re effective vs both LHP and RHP and you’re a lefty, are you going to pull him if there is a left hander on the mound? Of course not. You’re going to go with what gives you the best chance to win.

Far better might be a bit of an overstatement, but better vs RHP nonetheless. I’m looking far past just a 60 game sample size here. I’m looking at his entire career.

His splits are even, imo. But his triple slash against lhp is not only great, it’s a great improvement when compared to whomever the dodgers played against lefties in the past seasons. The original point is that the dodgers have a more balanced lineup w Mookie (and Smith). Mookie “kills lefties” and righties.

If you’re completely ineffective against lefties chances are your not all that great vs righties. If you’re awesome against righties, you’re probably just a bit less awesome vs lefties. The advantage/disadvantage does not really differ from player to player, it just is, and the tiny sample sizes we generally see vs lefties don’t change anything. Big swings in stats are generally anomalous and tend to even out over time.

It will be an interesting off season for the Yankees. Even if they lose Paxton, Happ, and Tanaka they still have starting pitching, but they are all young guys. Do they roll with the youngsters?

Did Gardner’s late season run earn him another year or did they see enough good things with Frazier to let Gardner go? Or do they keep Gardner and move on from Tauchman?

The bullpen needs arms with Kahnle and probably Heller down. Does Severino move to the bullpen while he builds up his arm again?

I do think the Yankees will shop Gary Sanchez, but the market is probably slim for DH’s. The Yankees may want to hold him for another year and see of the NL adopts the DH beginning in 2022.

The window closed very quickly on these phenoms winning it all and being a dynasty. Imagine what would’ve happened if they used Stanton’s salary on pitching. So glad Jeter fleeced them.

Another scenario where they bring back Gardner is if they think Frazier has enough value to be included in a trade for a significant piece. But then they still need a LF in 2022.

If I was cashman I would keep Gardner around as a 4th OF that can probably five you average production next year since he will be pretty cheap. I would consider dealing Frazier but only if the deal is right, no need to dump him. As for Sanchez, no way am I giving up on a guy that is a passable catcher (despite what the eye test may show), and has shown the ability to be a great offensive catcher in the past. Sure he struggled mightily this year, but over valuing his performance in a short season with everything going on this year is setting yourself up to make a bad decision

The problem with Sanchez is that the pitching staff doesn’t trust him behind the plate. All through the playoffs we heard the announcers saying how Yankee pitchers told them how much they like pitching to Higgy.

I have to believe that’s the main reason why Sanchez ended up benched.

is that actually true and something that affects pitching performance, or were they just saying nice things about the guy they knew would be catching in the postseason? Sanchez was benched first and foremost because of his awful season offensively, any other reasons for benching him are more ways to spin the decision than driving factors

While DJ is very important to the Yankees, if they are going to spend any money in the offseason, it should be on pitching. They are losing Paxton, Happ & Tanaka to free agency. While they do get Severino & German back in 2021, they’ll still need to add at least 1, if not 2 starting pitchers to their mix. Even with the 2 rookies who debuted this year, that is not nearly enough certainty for the 2021 season. I don’t see how the Yankees can keep DJ and reset their CBT tax as well. They seemed destined to become 3 time offenders unless they’re willing to jettison Chapman, Ottavino and/or Britton. Even if they were willing to do so, good luck finding a team willing to take on their full salaries. It’s going to be a tough offseason for Bronx Bombers.

Voit did great, considering the foot issues. Most players beg for the IL in his situation, instead of playing through the injury. Tough guy, old school. I hope they keep him.

The real solution is finding players that can make contact and hit for average as well as improving the rotation or bullpen. All of which could have been achieved at the trade deadline.

I think he’s trying to say that the home run swing and subsequent strikeout with nearly every Yankee batter is obviously one of their weaknesses during the past several postseasons. They need guys to make more contact and put the ball in play, not fly out and strikeout repeatedly in hopes of hitting a home run.

Plus, I seriously question Boone’s pitching stratagem. I’ve been a supporter of him, but he simply did not look at the big picture and it backfired twice.

I just looked at the yankees playoff appearances and they started making the playoffs again when Louie stopped watching. Maybe they need to keep Gardner for that reason alone?

You complained he did nothing in the playoffs last year this year he was one of the better players on the team, the year before he helped carry the team (your 3rd best player in fact). Did he like steal your wife or something. Gardner is the type of player most teams beg for. He does all the little things and is consistent year in and year out even at his current age and is loyal to the team.

Then so be a third year. Garner had a 110 wRC+, .332 wOBA, 108 OPS+, always puts up solid defesnive numbers and is consisntetly a good base runner. If you can get that out of your 4th outfielder, then you’re doing something right.

I don’t understand Sherman’s thinking. LH pop isn’t an overly expensive commodity in FA. In what many predict will be a depressed market it’s certainly not something you trade Torres or Voit for.

If anything, from a non-NYY fan’s perspective, it looks as if they need to address Catcher and get some pitching depth. They could probably move Frazier for a SP and just sign a catcher. Sign a LH bat for LF and call it a winter. I think Pederson would do well there sandwiched between two of those big RH bats. Dude crushes RHP, just can’t hit LHP like at all.

I really can’t see the Yankees trading Void after the season he just had and giving up Torres when his value is probably at the lowest it’s been in a while doesn’t seem like the most prudent approach to just trying to get more lefties in their lineup… I would think they’d pursue just about any other avenue to do that unless the return was really overwhelming for one of those two guys.

I’ve been saying all along its time to trade Judge. A players best ability is availability. He’s always injured. Aaron Bird Judge his new name. The Yankees biggest weakness is they can’t develop their own starting pitchers. They should of signed Cole and either Wheeler or MadBum. Every pitcher they traded for has not panned out lately. Sonny Gray, Paxton, Happ and so on. Is that because Cashman refuses to deal away top prospects or Cashman sucks evaluating pitchers. Cashman needs to go along with the entire player development staff. The Yankees should never lose to a team like TB with all the resources they have.

That’s what they’ve been doing for years. That’s why getting Stanton was such a ridiculous mistake. The Yanks and their fans get distracted by players like that and Ells. They need pitching, always have. Hal isn’t George. He’ll only go so far.

The only way they should trade Torres is for the Indians entire starting rotation. Torres is what 24 and one of their best hitters. The Stanton and Cole contracts are going to handicap them for the next decade. They needed to sign Cole but I still hate the Stanton deal even though he has been a strong postseason contributor he is hurt most of the regular season. No one will trade for him because of his contract and the way things are right now no one has the money. The yankees need some cheap young talent especially on the pitching side and I dint see any coming soon besides maybe Schmidt. Garcia has some stuff but I still think he’s a reliever unless he can bulk up. And there next good position player is Dominguez he’s at least 3 years away

Four more years until Torres becomes a free agent. His salary for a full 2020 season would have been $605,000. He provides excellent bang for the buck. I’m having a hard time understanding how trading him would greatly impact the Yankees’ luxury tax. Heck, a major part of his appeal to potential trade partners would be his low salary and four years of control.

Yanks deal Andujar, Sanchez, and a few solid top pitching prospects like Albert Abreu for example to Cleveland for Lindor’s last season since he’s already made it clear he won’t be signing with them.

Cleveland can do better than that and needs outfielders, not pitchers. The Braves would make sense as they can send the Indians a legit starting SS in Swanson, an outfielder (Pache or Waters), and perhaps a young pitcher. The question is whether it would really be worth it for Atlanta as Swanson is productive and more reasonably priced. Why fix what isn’t broken? Lindor is excellent but is starting to become overrated. Some suggested last winter that the Dodgers would be interested because Lindor would be an upgrade on Seager. I don’t agree with that all. In fact, in 2020 he would have been a significant downgrade.

Billy, Cleveland values defense, especially at the catcher position. They would have absolutely no interest in Gary Sanchez. Andujar can not play defense and is a DH and the Indians do not need a DH. As Cey Hey commented, Cleveland needs a controllable MLB outfielder as part of any Lindor trade. Besides, Andujar and Sanchez have little trade value. The Yankees are not getting Lindor for Yankee leftovers.

Re Spud Chandler. He didn’t reach the Majors until age 29 and wound up going 109-43 with 26 shutouts in 184 career starts. Lots of injuries and he missed two years at ages 36-37 due to World War II despite never being sent overseas.

Sanchez has zero trade value, so he should be the backup catcher until he’s a free agent. No sense releasing or dealing him for nothing. He just can’t be in the lineup every day.

Trading Gleyber is a stupid idea and whoever suggested that is a moron.

Voit, he’s so cheap, why deal him?

The guy I deal…wait for it…Aaron Judge. The reasons for doing so are beyond obvious. Im sick and tired of the time he spends on the IL every damned year. We already have a $32m identical problem in Stanton, so investing in another is a horrible idea. The difference between he and Sanchez is that when he’s on the field he actually hits and maybe his health is a risk another team will bank on working out better than it has in NY. Good kid, works hard, good leader, but time to move on. I hope he finds a way to stay on the field because he’s exciting when he is out there. Maybe Judge presents an opportunity for a swap for a decent pitcher.

He is still relatively cheap, so sure, you can hang on to him if you don’t get a decent return, but assume he will spend at least 20% of the season on the IL if you want to roll the dice again. Plan accordingly.

They have a lot of $ coming off the books this offseason in Tanaka, Paxton, Gardner, DJ, Kahnle and Happ. Britton could opt out too. Only guy who should be re-signed of that bunch is DJ but if he’s asking for more than 4 years, find a decent SS (Didi?) and move Gleyber back to 2B where he’s better suited. I love DJ but not worth a long term contract at 32 years old.

Then you invest some of that money in a “younger” middle of the rotation starter like Stroman, look for a decent bullpen arm and try to find a left handed bat unless they want to give Tauchman more reps.

Beyond that, hope that Sevy bounces back, slot Garcia and Montgomery into the rotation (with Schmidt as a spot start option until he’s ready) and hope for the best.

Yankees can compete, but I suspect 2021 will be more of a transition year than one in which they seriously contend for a title.

Boone isn’t the problem. It’s the guys on the field (as well as the guys who can’t stay on the field) who are to blame.

You can question some of Boone’s tactics in the postseason, I certainly did, but regular season, player health were far more significant factors.

Yankees have some hard decisions to make and it’s time they man up and make the biggest one: to trade Aaron Judge

Yanks might try and save money by trading Chapman. Britton’s is the closer and Chapman makes 16 mil a year. A team like the padres might be interested.
Ottovani is another big contract they could move. The yanks have some good young arms in the pen. It might be time to lean on them.

They could really use another top starter. Those dont come cheap but a package of Sanchez, frazier and tauchmann might get something decent.

Sign Brantley for left. Solid obp guy that bats left handed. He would thrive in yankee stadium.

Yes the Yankees need a legitimate lead off hitter. Speed is so underrated but so valuable. So yes the Yankees need more left handed hitters to balance that lineup. That’s why I keep saying Yankees traded for the wrong outfielder. They should of gotten Yelich instead of Stanton.

Studies show that speed is valuable on defense, not so much on offense. Those are studies conducted with scientific method, rather than baseless supposition, which is how the conclusion that speed on offense is “so valuable “ is arrived at.
