Nov. 11: Braves assistant general manager Perry Minasian is the fifth finalist for the job, Rosenthal tweets.
Nov. 10: The Los Angeles Angels are closing in on their next general manager. Per the Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal (via Twitter), the Angels have narrowed the field to a final five candidates. Granted, the field was said to have narrowed to three as of a couple of days ago, but regardless of how many remain in contention, Rosenthal adds that a decision could be made by the end of the week.
The known candidates are Cubs senior VP Jason McLeod, Diamondbacks assistant GMs Jared Porter and Amiel Sawdaye, and Mariners assistant GM Justin Hollander. The unknown fifth candidate fits a similar mold as an assistant GM type, per Rosenthal. Porter and McLeod both connect back to manager Joe Maddon and his time with the Cubs, while Hollander spent 9 years in the Angels’ front office before moving to the Mariners, notes Rosenthal.
As many as 14 different candidates were said to have interviewed for the role, most notably Michael Hill, formerly of the Marlins. Dave Dombrowski was rumored to be a consideration, but he proved unavailable for front office roles at this time. The Angels have apparently chosen to go the promotion route, selecting someone without significant prior experience in the role.
Rangers29
It’s pretty bad when your GM search is the size of the NBA playoff bracket.
cookmeister 2
So they should only consider 2 or 3 guys for the position? Seems like a winning strategy.
i like al conin
Maybe you can explain why it’s bad?
bkbk
Hows Jon Daniels working out there guy?
Rangers29
Again, one thing doesn’t negate another thing bkbk. Oh, and he’s terrible and we as a fanbase don’t like him (also because he’s handicapped by our terrible ownership). Not to mention Woodward screwing up our on-field product with his weak leadership decisions.
To answer your question @I like al conIn: That’s just something I say. Just jokingly. Though it is funny to think that there were Angels execs that sat down in a meeting and said, “Here’s my list of guys I’d like to see as our new GM” and the dude pulls out a scroll.
Loling @ you
Says the guy with John Daniels as gm…..worst in the league.
Cabrera4l
Another GM without experience
Brewers Numbers
Assistant GM Matt Arnold of the Brewers had interviewed.
Yankee Clipper
They may want to pick up the pace before all the pieces they need in the offseason are off the board. Kind of setting the new GM up for failure to give him the same team and then leftovers from the FA market to choose from.
dshires4
Like nobody has signed yet…
DVail1979
Hey … Robbie Ray is off the board … that could ruin every team’s offseason right there!
bravesfan88
I’m pretty positive whoever they sign, out of the five aforementioned candidates, will be just fine!!
With the way it is lookingzl, this free agency market is going looking, at a record slow pace. Which, in turn, should give them more than enough time to be selective about their new GM..
I’m honestly thinking we may not see the top 15-20 come off the board for a couple months..Possibly not even until mid January../:
houkenflouken
I see what you’re saying but free agency really doesn’t kick off AT LEAST until after QOs are accepted/rejected. December 2 in the non tender deadline so maybe things will get rolling then
bojo
Why Hasn’t Arte learned a lesson in his 17 years of ownership?
California Halo's
His huge flippen Ego. That’s why.
Excel_1984
Cant fire the owner unfortunately
Arte needs to go
bojo
If he’s going to hire an assistant why not get one from a team like the Rays, Twins or A’s. These are over-achieving clubs that are great at talent evaluation and getting the most bang for the buck. Come to think of it, why not pay to get their bosses?
James1955
bojo. You can’t get their bosses if they are under contract.
Chief Two Hands
Sure you can. You roll up in an unmarked van and just…get him!
houkenflouken
Successful GMs like them also want to see all their hard work translate to the field. They have good teams now might as well stay
Halo11Fan
The Braves are doing quite well.
The fact is no one here has a clue who is going to be a good GM. We talk as if we have knowledge and we don’t.
Angels & NL West
I’m not overly familiar with the candidates, but I have read good things about the two D-backs Assistant GMs – Porter and Sawdaye. Also, D-backs GM Mike Hazen speaks very highly of both and recommends them for GM positions. Hazen fully expects to lose one or both soon.
Halo11Fan
DiPoto was with the Diamondbacks. Eppler was with the Yankees. We don’t know who is going to be a good GM.
cookmeister 2
I think Hill is the mystery candidate, and my guess would be either him or Porter get the job.
HalosHeavenJJ
Sadly this is likely a token hire as Arte can’t get out of the way. I hope I’m wrong but the last two guys have seen Arte blow the budget on free agents and cut scouting to the bone.
The fact Dipoto has won more games over the last 4 years while openly and effectively rebuilding his talent base shows where the real problem lies.
have you seen my baseball
I remember when the Mariners hired Dipoto and Angels fans swore up and down he was the worst GM ever. I’m pretty satisfied with the job he’s done as a Mariners fan.
ryanw-2
No it doesn’t. Two teams at the bottom of the standings. Until Dipoto can show he can actually build a contender, he’s just a hack. Regardless of Arte’s meddling, or the big contracts, it comes down to developing better starting pitching from their system. All that other crap is just media fodder.
dan55
I’m kind of surprised that Logan White isn’t one of the finalists. He has been instrumental in building the current Dodgers and Padres teams. Though I am pretty happy that the Padres get to keep him.
GeoKaplan
I’m surprised as well, but sometimes the one being interviewed will take himself off the board if he realizes the job offered isn’t right for him. Maybe he has his eye on another path, too. Still strange he hasn’t been selected anywhere.
BobGibsonFan
They would consider someone with no experience? Where do I send my application?
BobGibsonFan
Give Jose Rojas a chance to play in the majors. Left handed hitter with some power. Good OBP guy. That’s what the Angels need is guys getting on base ahead of Trout, Ohtani and Rendon.
cookmeister 2
And where is Rojas going to play? He’s not better then Walsh or Rendon
BobGibsonFan
Walsh has a terrible obp. The Angel’s have 2 of the best players on the field and some decent role players. Fill some holes with prospects and make some smart signings in the bullpen. They should make the playoffs.
Geno55
fantasybaseball.com
Yep it is
Angels fans need to re-Joyce they dodged a huge one by not getting Dumbroski. He would of spent like crazy and gutted the farm system.
cars
I hate to stick Mike Trout with a incompetent moron like Jason McLeod but, I want him away from the Cubs. McLeod spent 8 years drafting and developing players, only a handful of players made it to the Cubs. His 1st round picks are questionable others are near busts.
angelsinthetroutfield
Yeah, I don’t think the Cubs have one impact arm that they’ve drafted and developed under McLeod. I’d much prefer the Angels hire someone with a pitching heavy draft strategy. Miami’s and Kansas City’s recent drafts come to mind immediately
RunDMC
ATL AGM Perry Minasian (whom AA brought over from his time in TOR) comes to mind, as they’ve interviewed him. Not aware of his draft strategy with TOR, but would be interested to know.
bkbk
Why is everyone mad about a “new” gm. Almost all the analytical GMs were new in their jobs. The only three execptions I can think of is Theo and the two kids from TB.
Vizionaire
angels should grab those kids.
Stratocaster
Interesting final paragraph and it really says it all. I can’t imagine an experienced candidate with any options wants this job. You’re caught between Moreno and Maddon and you have a bottom third farm system. With that said, there are only 30 of these jobs, but this looks like a first-time GM.
Loling @ you
Would rather have eppler than of those listed. Hoping the hidden 5th option is good
5toolMVP
McLeod should be the pick. Key part of Theo’s front office with three WS winners at the Redsox and Cubs. No other candidates can say that or come close to that success.
Loling @ you
Except he was horrible at drafting and analyzing talent, hence why he was moved from his post.
angt222
I understand that assistant GMs have talent to take the reins full on but a team like the Angels that has struggled to build a winner around Trout should look for a veteran GM.
Chief Two Hands
The Angels don’t have much of a reputation for doing things they should do.
67redsox
Looking for a GM…let’s see, the White Sox hired a drunk, the Red Sox and Tigers have hired cheats so the Angels are likely looking at felons recently released from prison to run their show.
socalbum
What is wrong with Moreno? He is considering assistant GMs from Diamondbacks, and Mariners, but not assistant GMs Gomes, or Kingston from Dodgers. Pride will not let him pick up the phone and ask Friedman for permission to interview those guys, or is he just incompetent?
Excel_1984
History has shown that Arte is only interested in “Baseball Entertainment” ie the Trout Farm, big splash free agents like Hamilton (ugh), Rendon, Pujols, etc. He isnt interested in a contending team (A TEAM WITH PITCHING). He’s a billboard guy, remember? He makes his money whether they win or not, just keep the stands full, which he does.
tesseract
Do they really need to interview 15 guys for the position?
jessaumodesto
Would Love for them to give Don Baylor a shot at GM
harrystyles
lmfao
chalk73
He passed away in 2017
Deleted Userrr
Probably McLeod
Chief Two Hands
The bad news for the next Angels gm…there is zero chance to win a championship before you get fired. The good news for the next Angels gm…Moreno throws money around stupidly and you can cash in on that incompetence. It’s all about perspective. I have to assume many people tell Moreno the Angels need to focus on pitching and Moreno’s standard response is along the lines of “what is this pitching you speak of? Pitching? We don’t need no stinking pitching! Hats for bats…keep bats warm…”. Yeah I’m assuming Moreno is the problem with the Angels. I’m not an Angels fan, though, so I just enjoy the debacle. Sucks for Trout, and his fans, but he made his own decision to stay.
prov356
I don’t care. None of us know which of these 5 guys would be good or bad at GM. Just hire someone and get on to signing pitchers named Bauer.
Excel_1984
Angels already have a GM, can you guess his name?
