Rangers Sign Charlie Culberson To Minor League Deal

By Steve Adams | December 28, 2020 at 2:31pm CDT

The Rangers announced that they’ve signed infielder/outfielder Charlie Culberson to a minor league contract and invited him to Major League Spring Training.

Culberson, 31, has spent the past three seasons with the Braves, shaking off a slow start that drew the ire of some fans to emerge as something of a cult hero in Atlanta thanks to some memorable clutch hits. Culberson certainly has a flair for the dramatic, having connected on several walk-off homers in his career — including a division-clinching walk-off shot for the Dodgers on Vin Scully’s final call at Dodger Stadium.

Though he was an oft-used utilityman for the Braves in 2018-19, Culberson tallied just seven plate appearances in 2020 and collected just one hit. Dating back to 2016, however, he’s totaled 556 plate appearances between the Dodgers and Braves, batting a combined .266/.312/.440 slash. Culberson has logged most of his time in the Majors at either shortstop or in left field, but he’s played all four infield spots and both outfield corners in the big leagues (in addition to 3 1/3 innings of one-run ball on the mound).

Agreed. You guys have got one of the most genuine guys in the league and the nicest player I have ever met. All Charlie does is give you 100% all the time at multiple position. One of my top 5 favorite players in the game because his humility, work in the community, and personality. Rangers you got a real one.

Yes, but remember- none of that has any value. Baseball is only about the robot stats.

Hey Rangers29, at least your team received a great consolation prize for Kim!

Low risk deal with some upside. Texas fans will love him.

Yeah too bad the Rangers missed out on Kim, but I am glad they got a swiss-army knife type. I’m sure he has a great shot at making the 26 with big questions at 2B & 3B still. I also think they will sign another IF to sure up any possible mishaps.

Doubt it. He’s a good fit for where they are at as an organization. Rebuilds need guys like that to take on the struggles of a rebuild and play even when there isn’t a lot of hope. Eat innings and show young guys how to play the game the right way even in tough times. CC is that guy. Would be foolish to let him go elsewhere (assuming he plays at his norm)

The Rangers re-signing Danny Santana seems very unlikely, now. Hope somebody signs him to a Major League deal.

I never understood why he got pushed to the far end of the bench and ultimately off the active roster. Maybe I can see why Hechy was picked up as a better replacement for Swanson than him or Camargo, but why not more time at 3rd when Riley was struggling, at 2nd for Albies, or as a sub for Nick and Duvall?

He was a cool dude and all heart. I met him a couple years back at Chop Fest as he was leaving the batting cages. I was the only one that recognized who he was and yelled hey, what’s up Charlie and he came over and gave me a fist pump.

Not mentioned anywhere else on this site so far is Tim Dillard re-signed with the Rangers to a minor league contract. So Tim is still chasing the dream…

I worked security for the Braves in 2019. Charlie would talk to you like you were a friend of his. Most players are friendly enough to say hi in passing, but Charlie stops and actually starts a conversation. lol. Cool guy! Texas fans I hope he does great for you. In fact if there was an inter league game between my Braves and Rangers with Charlie in your lineup, I’d root for Texas to win!
