J.T. Realmuto Suffers Fractured Thumb

By Steve Adams | February 18, 2021 at 1:06pm CDT

The Phillies kicked off Spring Training with some brutal news for fans. Star catcher J.T. Realmuto recently sustained a small fracture in his right thumb, manager Joe Girardi announced to reporters (Twitter link via MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki). The injury occurred six days ago when catching a bullpen session, tweets Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia.

Realmuto’s thumb will be immobilized for the next two weeks, and while the Phils are hopeful he’ll be ready for Opening Day, there’s no guarantee that’ll be the case. It’s certainly not the way the team or Realmuto hoped to kick off his newly inked five-year, $115.5MM contract.

Realmuto will be reevaluated after that immobilization period, at which point the club will have a better timeline for his return to games. If Realmuto is forced onto the injured list to begin the season, the Phillies would likely turn to Andrew Knapp as the primary catcher in his absence. Rafael Marchan could get a look as the backup role in that scenario, given that he’s already on the 40-man roster. If not Marchan, one of Jeff Mathis or Christian Bethancourt could get the nod. Both would need to be added to the 40-man roster, however, as they’re in Spring Training as non-roster invitees at the moment.

Lindor and Carrasco are both out with injuries suffered while they were having a thumb-war with each other.

This is nothing. Back in the day, he’d’ve put a tampon in his glove to protect his thumb & never even mentioned it.

        Ya know?
He’ll be fine, & more than likely, he’ll be ready & unaffected for opening day.

Problem is, according to the report, it was his right thumb that was fractured – his throwing hand, not his glove hand. So a tampon wouldn’t have helped much.

@pinstripes17 – I’m not a fan of the Mets or Phillies.

The Mets have been around since 1962 and have won two World Series and five pennants.

The Phillies have been around since 1890 and have won two World Series and seven pennants.

If you want to discuss baseball franchises that have “not one anything practically ever,” that conversation starts with the Phillies.

If you examined recent history (last 30 years) I’d argue that the Phillies have done pretty well. And that’s even with the last middle of the pack decade tacked on there.

@bucketbrew35 – The original reference was to “ever,” so I decided to look at each franchise’s entire history.

In the last 30 years, the Mets have made the playoffs five times, won two pennants and zero WS.

In the last 30 years, the Phillies have made the playoffs six times, won three pennants and one WS.

So using that arbitrary endpoint, the Phillies have done better.

@BigDaddyB – Your fandom of course is your personal choice, but many sports fans are interested in their entire franchises’ histories. To each their own.

What an awful start to camp for J.T. Realmuto and the Phillies. Of course if it had to happen, now is better than later.

This is precisely why having veteran depth is so important for an MLB team with postseason aspirations.

It’s why the White Sox recently brought in veteran Jonathan Lucroy to compete for the backup catching job along with Zack Collins and others. It’s also why they should consider signing free agent Yasiel Puig with the likelihood that at least one of Adam Eaton, Eloy Jimenez and Luis Robert will spend considerable time on the IL this season since each have already done so throughout most of their veteran or young professional careers. Sorry, but Adam Engel and Leury Garcia are insufficient depth if any one of those three starters go down with an injury for a prolonged period of time. In fact, highly versatile Garcia has rarely gone through a season without also being on the IL for an extended time.

There’s already been a whole lot discussion here between Phillies and Mets fans due to their teams being ‘engaged’ with Realmuto as a free agent earlier this offseason so perhaps an “affair” with the White Sox had occurred at some point in their past, maybe involving a trade and before the ChiSox signed Yasmani Grandal last winter. lol

You don’t win titles with that guys! Ask Washington. You overpaid!! Then you guys doubled-down and overpaid all of your free agents to come back. Team has holes EVERYWHERE! Bryce Harper contract = mistake! It is a far more likely outcome that Philly finishes last in the NL East than it is that they will make the playoffs. Washington won the World Series as soon as they got that guy out of there.

    And there it is.

JT’s got to be regretting not taking the contract from the Marlins when they offered. More money than the Phillies signed him. The rebuilding Marlins made the playoffs before he did. And for 2020 and now the start of this year, he’s been dealing with dome injuries.

Sometimes you just have to take the money when it’s offered to you. Look at Stanton pulled it off. Stanton will never regret it…even after “Jeter gifted him to the Yankees”…lol, I had to throw that in there.

Ozuna to the Cards (Alcantara and Gallen with Gallen sent to D-Backs for Chisholm)

Realmuto to the Phillies (Sixto, Alfaro, and another pitching prospect)

Jeter did mess up letting Mike Hill handle the Yelich trade though…unless Yelich falters and the remaining acquired pieces do something (Brinson, Harrison, I. Diaz)

“dome” injuries? Do you mean dome as in head? Or was it a typo? I’m not being mean, I’m just confused. he has a small fracture in his thumb. could have happened anywhere with any team.

Also he’s making a ton in Philly. I think he’s pretty happy. I don’t understand the context. He wouldn’t have hurt his thumb by getting hit by a pitch in Miami? Is that your main paint?

      Reply
      • MarlinsFanBase

Yeah, typo that I didn’t see until it was too late to edit. It was meant to be ‘some’ injuries.

My main point is that he turned down what was a lot more money to extend with Miami and asked for a trade because he didn’t want to be part of a rebuild.

The fact that he turned down a contract extension that was for more money and given him years beyond this contract with the Phillies, is always something to look at as a lost opportunity for maximizing your value. The fact that he rejected the offer and then asked to be trade because he wanted to be with a contender instead of a rebuild, has to sting a little when you add that the Marlins went to the playoffs before him.

That’s what my point is. He could’ve signed the contract and still been traded, while keeping his money and years. He chose not to sign it, and the reason he chose not to and why he asked for the trade, didn’t work out for him at all. He ended up getting less money, and less security for years before expiration of contract. And what for? He still hasn’t made the playoffs, and the team he didn’t want to rebuild with did make the playoffs before him.

Sorry, but people, Realmuto and his agent can spin this any way they want, but it’s hard to believe that this whole thing doesn’t have a little sting to it for him. Yes, he got good money, but he didn’t maximize it…and his reasoning for not signing the Marlins offer and then asking for the trade ended up failing.

        That’s my point.

        • VonPurpleHayes

Oh fair although I think it was more than the rebuild. He wanted a bigger marker, bigger opportunities and a place to raise his family. It wasn’t just about money. Miami is a beautiful place, but it’s not fot everyone. JT wanted out.

Actually, JT and Yelich made it clear it was about not being part of a rebuild. The Marlins intended to rebuild with both of them as the centerpieces. They both made it clear that they wanted no part of it and wanted out.

And JT is actually more of a small town guy. I personally feel that, if the Rangers, Astros or Braves would have made offers, he would’ve headed one of those ways. – especially one of the two Texas clubs

Gardy with salary ego? You realize with his production (even the last few years at his age) he has been worth close to double what he is being paid? 4 WAR was close to bryce harper at (4.5) in 2019 and he got paid 7 million vs bryce harper getting what 30? last yeah he was at 0.7. vs 1.5 for bryce and gardner got paid 10M. 17M vs 60M with only a difference of 1 win? Is WAR end all be all of stats no but puts salary in perspective as usually there is a salary for 1 WAR to get a rough estimate.

With the injury history of the yanks outfielders, he would probably get bulk of time again and with home discount should be getting atleast 6-8 but probably could get 10-15 on other teams if he would even consider them. I would definitely take him on the mets for 10M 1yr deal over what we have now. I would prefer him over JBJ for sure as Brett is consistent production year in and year out even last year. JBJ is a streaky hitter and he happened to hit a streak in a short season.

Your all jealous of J.T., because whatever team you root for, doesn’t have a catcher on their roster, that could carry J.T.’s jock strap.

Including my own team, because the catcher of my team is Gary Sanchez. I don’t care that he hits bombs, he’s not that valuable because 1.He is arguably the worst fielder at his position and certainly the worst defensive catcher that I have ever seen. 2.He is lazy and surpassed PED cheat Robinson Cano as the laziest player that I have ever seen, something that I thought would never happen. 3.He is a choke artist. 4.He is not very good at getting on base (his best in which he started the season as the Yankees starting catcher is .345, which isn’t bad but should not be your best On Base Percentage in a season as a primary starter.) Plus he also a career on base percentage of .322. 4.He is a low average hitter (career batting average of .238). Sure, I don’t care about that statistic, but a catcher that’s supposed to be top 10 should do better than that. and 5.He would be completely worthless if he couldn’t hit for power.

Marlin’s fans: I ‘d bet that Jorge Alfaro has more Passed Balls, than Homers, in 2021.

My dad told me this today, I almost didn’t believe him. Then I realized it was classic phillies luck and I started to laugh. It just makes sense.

O.K. Einstein’s. Before, you start ragging on the Phil’s, Let’s take a look at World Series Championships for N.L. East Teams, the last 40 years:
    Atlanta Braves- 1. 1995
    Florida Marlins- 2. 1997, 2003
    New York Mets- 1. 1986
    Philadelphia Phillies- 2. 1980, 2008
    Washington Nationals -1. 2019
So, Let’s see…. Phil’s tied with Marlin’s at 2. Braves, Mets, Nats all with 1. So, I’d say Braves, Mets, Nats fans your team SUCKS.

I tore the extensor tendon to my right thumb, at age 30, had surgery, and was back with full movement in less than 4 weeks. I think J.T. will be fine.

Let’s continue this conversation about “Freaky” Sports Injuries. I’m sure we can find some dirt on players on your favorite team…
    Will start with the Mets:
Yoenis Cespedes- While rehabilitating at his ranch in Port St. Lucie, Fla., purportedly, Yoenis fractures his right ankle, falling into a hole, after encountering a Wild Bour? C,Mon, I went to college, and lived in Florida. Never have known it to be a habitat for Wild Bour? Perhaps, he was tripping on LSD, and in his dillusional state of mind, saw a Wild Bour, which actually turned out to be Micky Calloway.

Continuing, this ” incident ” with Yoenis, caused the Mets, to restructure his contract from a guaranteed 29 mil., for 2020, to 6 mil, with performance incentives. I would give him the 6 mil., just for his ” creativity”, with this fairy tale….

Vince Coleman (Former Cardinal, N.Y. Met): As a rookie with the Cardinals in 1985, Vince injures himself when run over in pregame warmups, by an Automatic Tarp Machine. This faux paux, occurs prior to Game 4 of the NLCS, causing Vince to miss the rest of the Series, which the Cards, wound up losing in 7 games. I guess the ” speedy “, Vince wasn’t too swift, here.

Kevin Mitchell: 2 memorable injuries here: Once, strained a muscle while vomiting( probably, reviewing his stat page, or where the Mets were in the standings). Two, breaks a tooth, biting into a Chocolate Donut, he kept in the freezer too long. By the looks of his torso, I’d recommend laying off the doughnuts…

Francisco Rodriguez: (AKA K. ROD.) . Tore a ligament in his pitching hand, which required surgery. Purportedly, this occured when he punched his girlfriend’s father, at Citi Field. Must have been a Yankees fan… The ” real ” team of NY.

Let’s now point some fingers at the Brave’s…
How about Hall of Famer, and MLB analyst John Smoltz.. What bonehead thing did he do to make this list?
John Smoltz : Once, burned his chest while ironing a shirt, he was wearing at the time. Even a MORON,like Al Bundy, would take the shirt off first.

Not nearly done yet… How about another Hall of Famer…
Tom Glavine: Once, broke a rib, while vomiting, on an airplane. Must have occurred, right after another Braves exit from the playoffs..

    Let’s try the Nationals…
Stephen Strasburg: After a rough outing of just 4 innings, your hero leaves the game. His manager ( Davey Johnson), later reveals after the game, the pitcher got ” Hot Stuff ” in the wrong place, and he didn’t know how it got there… Translation: Strasburg accidently applied Icy Hot to his genitals. You’d have to have “balls” first, for that to happen…

And for all you Marlin Fans….
Hanley Ramirez: Lacerated his right ring finger, punching a cooling fan, after grounding out, in a game against the Cards. Ramirez received 2 stitches on his knuckle. To make matters worse, the cut became infected, causing Hanley to miss some games. According, to the Miami Herald, Marlin’s Manager Ozzie Guillen, said that Hanley forgot to take his prescribed antibiotics. ” How do you forget to take a pill, the doctor tells you to take? Guillen, asked. ” Hopefully, the doctor finds exactly the right pills to take, and I’ll tell him open your mouth, like a baby, and put them in his mouth and make sure he takes his pills every night. Ramirez was traded to the Dodgers a few days later.

And, don’t forget the ” New Dodger Messiah ” TREVOR BAUER …
Who Lacerated his hand, while playing with his drone. This requiring stitches, which burst while he was pitching in.the World Series, against the Cubs. Blood dripping BAUER, was forced to leave the game. The Indians, went on to lose the Series to the Cubs, giving the Cubs their 1st World Championship in 108 years.

The moral behind all these posts is that ” People who live in glass houses, should not be throwing stone’s. We are not perfect, and all of us, have done some ” stupid things”,that we’ve come to regret.
