Thanks in part to his ability to play both the corner outfield and first base, Jay Bruce has put himself in the running to make the Yankees’ roster, Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News writes. The Yankees may have to decide in the next week whether to give a spot to Bruce, who can opt out of the minor league contract he signed on March 25. Bruce isn’t on the Yankees’ 40-man roster, which is full, so they will have to make a corresponding move if they do add him. That could spell bad news for another outfielder, the out-of-options Mike Tauchman. While Tauchman unexpectedly thrived as both a hitter and defender in his first year as a Yankee in 2019, his production dipped on both ends last season. Tauchman did post a .342 on-base percentage in 111 plate appearances, but it came with a .242 batting average and almost no power (.305 slugging percentage, .063 ISO and zero home runs). Then again, Bruce didn’t exactly hold his own as a Phillie last year, when the veteran power hitter slashed .192/.252/.469 with six HRs over 103 PA.
- Good news for the Reds’ bullpen: Left-hander Amir Garrett will pitch in his first spring training game of the year Saturday, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic tweets. Forearm soreness has slowed Garrett, perhaps the favorite to close for the Reds if he’s healthy. The 28-year-old notched a 2.45 ERA/2.82 SIERA and fanned hitters at a massive 37.7 percent rate across 18 1/3 innings in 2020.
- With Carlos Carrasco reportedly to miss six to eight weeks because of a torn hamstring, the Mets are stretching lefty Mike Montgomery out and considering him as a swingman, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com relays. Montgomery, whom the Mets signed to a minors pact, has racked up 183 appearances and 70 starts since he debuted in 2013. The former Mariner, Cub and Royal has combined for a respectable 3.84 ERA during his 541-inning career, though his ERA hovered around the 5.00 mark in each of the previous two seasons.
- Mariners reliever Andres Munoz suffered a “little setback” in his recovery from Tommy John surgery a few weeks ago and hasn’t taken the mound since, manager Scott Servais told Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times and other reporters. Munoz underwent the procedure almost exactly one year ago (March 20, 2020), and the Padres then dealt him to the Mariners in a seven-player trade last August. Considering how long it takes to return from TJ surgery, Munoz wasn’t likely to debut with the Mariners until sometime this summer, but now it appears they may have to wait a bit longer. Still just 22, Munoz impressed in his first season, 2019, when he pitched to a 3.91 ERA/3.72 SIERA in 23 innings, struck out 30.9 percent of batters and averaged 99.9 mph on his fastball.

Andres Munoz is fun to watch. I hope he can stay healthy.

If Tacuhman was a good defender in 2020 like he was in 2019, then I think he gets the edge here easily. But he wasn’t and Bruce hasn’t been all that bad of a defender himself with +2 DRS, 2.0 UZR/150 in his last 593 innings in the outfield.
deweybelongsinthehall
The Yankees are built to win now which favors Bruce. 2020 should not count. What gives Bruce the edge to me is his track record and potential to hit dingers in Yankee Stadium.
Yankee Clipper
I see both your points on this, and I’m not sure which way Cash goes. You guys have very valid arguments on both sides of this. They really like Tauch and he’s the backup CFer, so I don’t see how he’s expendable. But. Bruce? A LH power bat, consistently performing to expectations? Ugh.
Old User Name
@Yankee. True but Gardy is also the backup CFer. I like Tauchman but I’m thinking the spot goes to Bruce because of his lefty power. Unless, of course, the Yanks are really pinching pennies and they want to save a few bucks. Tough call either way.
Yankee Clipper
Yeah, very true Joe, and Gardy’s not going going anywhere. It would be a shame to lose Tauchman, I like him as a player and I think he fits well with the team.
Let’s go Yankees!
deweybelongsinthehall
Gardi was not signed as insurance. His job is secure.
kiwimlbfan
Plenty of time for someone to go on the IL yet.
But seriously, I’m not sure of the rules but couldn’t they transfer Severino to the IL and give Bruce that spot until Sevy comes back or someone else gets injured?
terry g
Bruce in Yankee Stadium would be interesting to watch.
JoeBrady
He’s got plenty of stats at Yankee Stadium.
Srechter35
My vote is for jay bruce for 2021. But with what tauchman showed in 2019, it’d be a damn shame to lose him for nothing because of poor, small sample performance in a historically weird year. Really tough call to make. Hard to reject a much needed lefty power bat, hard to give away a dynamic, flexible outfielder on the cheap. I’ll be happy and sad with whatever the outcome is.
andremets
Keep both and jettison someone else…Gardy?
mustang
Exactly!
But it won’t happen.
Love Gardy but he should go.
deweybelongsinthehall
As an impartial Sox fan, Gardi is the perfect fourth outfielder for a championship caliber team.
Ducky Buckin Fent
shhhhhhhhh…Yankee fans have been trying to ditch GGBG for…man, a really long time.
I don’t get it.
Love the guy & see it the same way as you.
Edit: Which – now that I think about it – is a bit awkward.
Eatdust666
Then have Bruce replace Ford, problem solved.
Lars MacDonald
Ford isn’t making the team.
Problem not solved.
mustang
I say put Bruce and Tauchman in a UFC ring winner takes all
lol
Yankee Clipper
I bet Bruce has one heck of a left!
Bart Harley Jarvis
Yankee Clipper,
Yeah, but he’ll tweak an oblique muscle mid-punch. He’s gotten a bit ‘delicate’.
CravenMoorehead
Sorry Tauchman, it’s Brucies time to shine.
Robertowannabe
Thanks, you made my day and weekend!
jgoody62
If I was Tauchman I’d be thrilled to go through waivers… get claimed by a team like Pittsburgh and have the chance to start 100+ games
JoeBrady
I was thinking of something similar as I read the article. There should be some a 95-loss team out there with an outfield opening willing to trade a low-tier prospect for Tauchman. All the Yankees need is someone they don’t need to add to the 40-man roster.
larryb
I hope Garrett throws well. Doolite and the rest of the so called RP have been nothing but trash during Spring Training.
jim stem
Montgomery hasn’t really been effective since 2018. If they are ‘stretching him out’, that must mean Eickhoff (sp), Yamamoto, McWilliams and Lucchesi have failed to impress the coaching enough to warrant a shot.
deGrom
Stroman
Walker
Peterson
Lucchesi
…is still good. I’d like to see the lefties split up, though.
With Lugo still a few weeks out, Montgomery might be just settling into the left handed multiple inning reliever that role that Lucchesi was going to fill. Yamamoto long relief from the right side if he sticks until Lugo returns. Teams are going to need 8-10 starters no matter what in 2021. Heck, maybe Rojas is looking at utilizing an opener (Yamamoto rh then Montgomery lh) after Peterson. I guess we find out in about 3 weeks when that 5th starter is needed. Stay healthy, Jake!!
costergaard2
Mets only need to tread water in the 5th slot until they get Syndergaard back. If they can stay in contention and then add him, they will likely be one of those teams that “got hot” as the playoffs neared/started…
Old User Name
That’s expecting a lot from a pitcher coming back from TJ. They usually take another year to really get back into form. The Yankees are in the same boat with Severino.
Yankee Clipper
It’s not like he was untouchable before TJS either.
Flyby
I would say Thor and Severino are in the same boat except Severino is to be slotted higher in the rotation for the yankees upon his return than Thor needs to be.. I havent watched spring training but it sounded rotation wise Mets would be able to ease Thor back into the rotation slower as they have a lot of experienced options.. This is assuming no injuries as the mets just lost Carrasco for a few weeks.
Please correct me if i am wrong on this as i have only seen about a half game of spring training for the mets and nationals. Damn work making me work.
Bart Harley Jarvis
jim,
The Mets are in a real predicament if Jerad Eickoff is ever considered as a starter. Save yourself a lot of disappointment and dismiss any thought of him in a starting rotation. He’s toast.
chuck123
I would have not signed Gardner and kept Tauchman….Bruce is a keeper in the win now environment
Ducky Buckin Fent
I think the Yanks were extremely concerned with Tauchman’s massive drop in sprint speed. This seems to have really impacted his game all the way around; hitting, fielding, base running.
Perhaps he was playing hurt. But that was never revealed. & Tyler Wade hit more home runs than he did. That’s worthy of a: Yikes!
Gardy is the Denali version of Tauchman. Go with that.
There’s a spot for Bruce on this club.
Cash is really trying to figure out how to shoehorn a LH bat onto the roster. Jay Bruce can certainly be that. I really like the work Cash did with the ‘pen, bench, & overall depth.
(I think he did what he was able to with the rotation – but that was impacted by financial considerations.)
JoeBrady
Have you ever thought of writing as a hobby? You have an interesting way of presenting your thoughts.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Hey, thanks for the compliment, @Brady.
Ya know, I have dozens & dozens & yet more dozens of articles I’ve written for outdoors magazines.
No one wants them lol.
I studied Architecture in college. It was a major that required a minor (weird sentence). So I minored in Studio Art. Can’t lie. I was quite taken with those artsy girls. Still am, matter of fact. Anyway, I took a creative writing course as part of my coursework.
It stuck.
But I’m pretty cavalier with punctuation & sentence structure due to it. That’s my erstwhile excuse anyway.
mlbnyyfan
Why can’t the Yankees keep both Bruce and Tauchman. Bruce can possibly replace Mike Ford on the roster. I think Ford has an option left. Bruce can back up Voit instead of Ford. This is why I was concerned when Gardy was brought back because he creates more of a roster problem.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Let’s assume that the Yankees’ll carry 13 position players. That makes 4 spots up for grabs. God help us if they go with 14 pitchers. You know they are discussing it.
Gotta have a backup catcher: Higgy stays
Gotta have a backup SS: Wade or Thairo (both out of options, btw) stays
Gotta have a CF capable 4th outfielder: that leaves Gardy or Tauchman.
That’s three bench spots right there.
I’m guessing you now see the problem in keeping both Bruce & Sockman on the bench. No room.
Gardy > Tauchman.
Easy call for me to make on this one, @mlbnyyfan. Trade Tauchman for whatever the hell you can. Unless an injury occurs before opening day. & let’s just skip over that possiblity for all our sakes.
Keena
mlbnyyfan, I completely agree. I was so disappointed when the Yankees brought Gardner back. Inevitably he’s going to take away a more deserving player’s job like Jay Bruce or Mike Tauchman. Yes, the Yanks outfield is extremely fragile and I get wanting depth but they could always wind up giving Florial a shot in center once the injuries start piling up, likely in the first series of the season. But even more than Gardner, I think the absolute biggest waste of a roster spot, possibly in NY Yankees history is Tyler Wade. Cut the cord with this guy, he’s absolutely useless. It reminds me so much of when they had Ramiro Pena and kept playing him all the time despite the fact that he sucked both offensively and defensively.
KEEP Bruce and Tauchman, have Florial in the minors but ready to come up and use Urshela or LeMahieu as emergency shortstops. But for the love of God, get rid of Wade. Can’t trade him because I can’t see anyone in baseball wanting him for any reason at all. Someone might possibly sign him through waivers but no chance any team gives up an actual player for him and for good reason, he’s lousy.
LordD99
I think what people are missing here is Tauchman’s role has already been replaced on the roster. Gardner is now serving in Tauchman’s 4th OFer role. Bruce, Dietrich and Tauchman are auditioning to replace Mike Ford on the bench. The Yankees would like to keep Tauchman, but he’s a bit redundant with Gardner, who is the better player and not an easy fit for the Ford role. It comes down to either Bruce or Dietrich, who offer a better bat than Ford and wider defensive versatility. I suspect we’ll see a minor trade involving Tauchman within the next five days. Don’t rule out Dietrich beating out Bruce. I don’t think the Yankees will base the decision on Spring Training ABs.
Ducky Buckin Fent
‘zactly, @lordd99 –
Tauchman is still in camp in case someone gets hurt. That was determined when the Yanks re-signed Gardy. The End.
Dietrich is interesting, too. I’d be curious to know his contract situation. Does he have a similar opt out to Bruce? Or can we just stash him down in AAA?
Wondering about the Pirates as a potential trade partner for Tauchman. I’m still coveting Richard Rodriguez. Move Britton to the 60 day IL, include a guy like Kriske for roster maintenance. According to BTV this would be an overpay by the Yankees.
Could be something there. Maybe?
Robertowannabe
I don’t think Cherington would value either Trauchman or Kriske at the moment considering his method for rebuilding that he is using. He would be looking to pick up younger prospects and not aging AAAA type players. If Huntington was still in charge, it would be a done deal.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Fair enough, @gozurman1.
Although I’m not sure Kriske (who is the lesser piece here) is necessarily a AAAA player at this point in his career.
But that doesn’t change the fact that I’ll definitely buy what you’re selling. & therein lies a danger of using BTV: not all overpays are created equal, uh?
LordD99
There will be a trade market for Tauchman, but the return won’t overwhelm due to his power outage. Tauchman won’t net Rodriguez, so it will take another good piece. I don’t think the Yankees will want to pay that price now. I don’t know Dietrich’s contract situation, but he’s a vet and remains productive. He has to have an opt out built in somewhere.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Yeah that all adds up.
That damn @mlb1225 got me stuck on Rodriguez back in…man, probably December.
He’d be a nice fit in our ‘pen, serious.
Hopefully it’s one of those for June 15th – or whatever. Dietrich would be a nice bat to have down in AAA. & it’d be swell to have some time to evaluate the roster.
Probably not very realistic, however. Like you said, productive vet. Versatile too. That plays in modern MLB.
Alright.
I’m going to try to run into some snow geese. You have a great Friday, man.
Robertowannabe
I agree, that the Yanks would be interested and if they would put in either Kriske or Trauchman and put in a decent younger prospect in instead I could see it happening with Cherington.. These 2 guys together do not look like what Cherington is looking to make deals for right now as neither appear to be longer term building blocks for the team.
jdgoat
I don’t think Tauchman is as good as he was in 2019, it was probably a bit fluky. But I don’t think it would be wise to risk losing him for nothing by adding Bruce.
jdgoat
There will be a lot of players on waivers soon though so he might sneak through.
Kraz Nadler
Why don’t they start Bruce in center? Seems to be the most logical answer
mlbnyyfan
I would rather have Tauchman then someone like Cessa in the BP if it’s down to the final roster spot. Problem is Yankees don’t have many starters that can give them any length to avoid overusing the BP.
Ducky Buckin Fent
I know it’s disconcerting, but Luis Cessa has become an above average reliever.
2019 ERA+: 109
2020 ERA+: 130
Aside from a step backwards in ’18, Cessa has continued to improve year by year. & let’s not forget his performance in the ’19 LCS against the Astros* (who even knew what pitch was coming!). The kid was nails.
All Cesspool jokes aside, he is a contributor. Remember: he’s a converted shortstop. His development is going to be uneven at times.
Joe Momma
I never understood the hate on Cessa. He has done his job every step of the way and like you said is sneakily improving as time goes on. I doubt he will ever be an all star but he definitely contributes to this team when they call on him.
Yankee Clipper
I really like Cessa. He was really cool with me and my son and took a bunch of selfies with my kid (7). Incredibly nice guy. I’ll always root for him just because of his character. And yes, I agree, he’s become a quality thrower too.

Bruce from Hamermill Paper Products, Bruuuuuuuuuuuuce

As long as Bruce and Gardner don’t steal at-bats from Frazier, it’s cool. I have high hopes this is the year Frazier becomes a star.
Flyby
I agree this is Frazier’s year to shine. I just hope they dont move him around when Stanton or Judge goes down. This could stunt his potential growth again by moving him around the outfield or moving him back to dh and slow down his improvements in the field.
Yankee Clipper
Taking into account injuries and roster construction I don’t see that and a possibility. Frazier is full time; the only thing that will impede that is Frazier falling flat on his face this year in performance.
angt222
Bruce could do well at Yankee Stadium.
whyhayzee
Jay Bruce is a middle class man’s Jim Thome. Good guy, big bat. That is intended as a compliment.
Rsox
Bruce will likely make the team because they are not going to carry Ford as a 1B only option off the bench. Bruce can get several AB’s when Judge and/or Stanton inevitably hit the IL. They may get lucky and be able to sneak Tauchman through waivers.
ajrodz1335
What do Yankee Fans think about Derek Dietrich?
brucenewton
Bruce has career worst numbers at yankee stadium, even against sub par yankee pitching.
Johnmac94
“The Yankees may have to decide in the next week whether to give a spot to Bruce, who can opt out of the minor league contract he signed on March 25.” This is what our youth is reading…, today is March 20 and the great writing skills presented above indicate Bruce signed on March 25… Maybe if it were written in spanish, the language of the USA…
