Angels Sign David Fletcher To Five-Year Extension

By Connor Byrne | April 1, 2021 at 10:57pm CDT

The Angels made a key move on Opening Day, announcing a five-year, $26MM extension with second baseman David Fletcher. The contract will begin this season and run through the 2025 campaign. Fletcher, a client of the Ballengee Group, will earn $2MM in 2021, $4MM in 2022, $6MM in 2023 and 2024, and $6.5MM in the final guaranteed season of the deal. There is also a club option worth $8MM ($1.5MM buyout) for 2026 and an $8.5MM option ($1.5MM buyout) for 2027, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic tweets.

Fletcher wouldn’t have been eligible for arbitration until after this season, and he hadn’t been scheduled to reach free agency until the end of the 2024 campaign, but extending him will give the Angels the ability to lock in his annual salaries for the foreseeable future and delay a trip to the open market. It’s easy to see why the Angels are making this move, as the 26-year-old Fletcher has emerged as an important building block for the franchise since it spent a sixth-round draft pick on him in 2015.

Fletcher made his major league debut three years after the Angels picked him, and he has since proven that he’s a defensively versatile player who can at least offer league-average offense. He has lined up all over the infield and played some outfield, though the majority of his experience has come at second, short and third. With Anthony Rendon owning third for the long haul and Jose Iglesias set to play shortstop for the Angels this year, Fletcher will be their primary second baseman in 2021. He has fared quite well there with 13 Defensive Runs Saved and a 7.4 Ultimate Zone Rating in 100 games.

Fletcher has offered almost no power at the plate with an .098 isolated power mark and 10 home runs in 1,190 trips, but his career 10.3 percent strikeout mark is outstanding, as is his lifetime .292 average. Last year represented a personal-best offensive campaign for Fletcher, who batted .319/.376/.425 (123 wRC+) in 230 PA.

With this agreement in place, Fletcher joins Rendon and center fielder Mike Trout as cornerstone Angels position players who are locked up through at least the next half-decade.

Jon Heyman of MLB Network first reported an agreement was close. Jeff Passan of ESPN and Ardaya reported the numbers, and Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register tweeted the two sides had a deal in place. Photo courtesy of USA Today Sports Images.

You do realize this deal does not guarantee Fletcher will still be here one extra day. Eight and a half million dollars is a lot of money for that type of player and it’s very possible the option will not get picked up.

Fletcher is a ball player, but his skill set isn’t so coveted that it is a lock the Angels pick up that option.

It may not. And you are right, it buys one extra year. And it’s certainly possible it may be two more. It’s better to have a sure fire option than not. I’m just pointing out it’s a lot of money for his skill set.

I don’t know Fletcher, not watching the Angels very much. He sounds like a Brock Holt type. How would he compare? I mention Holt because he never saw that kind of money so I’m curious if this was an overpay especially in the environment were in or does Fletcher’s ability at this stage of his career outshine Holt’s at the same point? I fell in love with Holt (on the field, please no comments) from the moment he arrived from Pittsburgh due to his hustling, 100% style all the time and he just seemed to outperform expectations.

Fletcher as a scrappy player that is a joy to watch. If you are a Red Sox fan, think Marty Barrett, but better. Eckstein with a much better arm but not quite the speed. He’s so much fun to watch. He’s a scrapper.

To put this in perspective, he has four years to go on his contract and fans are thrilled the Angels extended him with one more guaranteed year.

I don’t know how he’ll look in five years. There are not a lot of comps.

@Halos11Fan I disagree that Fletcher skills aren’t very coveted. He is a good defensive 2nd baseman, which is always the priority for a middle infielder. He is also lead off hitter that sees a ton of pitches with a good OBP. He also has good speed. Most teams would view Fletcher as an upgrade over their current 2nd baseman.

He was 2nd on the team in WAR last year behind Rendon and ahead of Trout. Those other 2 guys are making 35M+ per year, so this would have to a win in the Angels favor when you look at the AAV of this contract.

Hernandez signed a 1 year 5 million dollar contract. He’ll be 31 next month. Good little player. Every year he’s started he’s been a 2 to 3 WAR player. Last year he had a WAR of 1.8.

Fletcher will be at his 32 season for the first option. It really could go either way. Anyway, he’s guaranteed one extra year. If he goes the wrong way, few will care if he’s here two or three more years. If it goes the right way, Angel fans will be happy for the next seven years. It’s a good deal for both teams.

Lets all hope he’s worth a pickup.

Chiming in with “you do realize” condescension on something you were objectively wrong about is probably gonna annoy people, and it’s not hard to figure out why.

Once you count the CLUB options, In all likelihood they just bought THREE years of Fletcher’s free agency, plus all of his remaining controllable years, for less money ($42.5) than his current rate of production would have fetched him for just the 3 FA years alone.

My prayers are answered was a little over the top as well. It’s one extra year. My response was also a little over the top.

I compare this to Eckstein. Eckstein was better than Fletcher and he was non tendered before he even reached his sixth year. I wouldn’t be so sure he’s going to get more than that one extra year.

He might, he might not. We all hope he is good enough to get those two extra years. It’s a good deal for both parties. Unless my math is wrong, He’s going to be 33 when that option kicks in. Eckstein was just shy of 30 when he was non tendered

This is his age 27 season, he’ll be 27 the end of next month. The first year of the option will be his age 32 season. So he’ll be 33 his second option years. I’m off by 1 year again. What’s up with that?

How good will he be? He could be a utility infielder. He could also get better. It’s a good deal for both parties. Eck was non tendered after age 29 season. At age 26 Eck was really good. At age 27, Eck was great.

You condescending to them about something you were literally wrong about is not “an excited fan.” It’s you being condescending. And wrong. You absolutely do not need to double and triple down on this thing.

It’s an extremely team friendly deal that guarantees longevity of Fletcher beyond what we knew yesterday, by as much as 3 years. Another fan was excited by that and you were wrong about it. Period. Move on.

As for 2021, he’s made moves to keep them competitive now while at the same time shifting in a new direction. Winnable division. Get the tradeline in the race and then decide what needs to be added.

Halo11Fan weren’t you the same one who said in 2018. Teams will figure Fletcher out and the Angels need to stick with Cozart? Fletcher plays better defense than that second baseman in Cleveland. Simmons just got 10.5 million and can’t stay healthy. Fletcher has On Base Percentage and not much difference in their glove.

BTW that overhyped second baseman in Texas who can’t hit catch run or throw. Will make more money with the Rangers the next 3 years than Fletcher will make even with the options getting picked up.

How did you get three thumbs up for a 100 percent inaccurate post? I never said any such thing. Stick with Cozart? One was brought in to play third, the other was a second baseman.

The Angels didn’t have a second baseman when they brought in Cozart. That’s a complete fabrication.

My opinion of Fletcher after the conclusion of his fist season call up was that I didn’t like his odds because he was close to dead last in exit velocity and I didn’t think he’d become a very good player.. HOWEVER, I still drafted in my 2019 fantasy draft. I needed a starting second baseman.

No freakin way did I want my starting second baseman benched. You flat out made up your post.

Cap & Crunch, I love Seager, but that ball that scooted beneath his glove is why I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s not re-signed. Friedman is always looking a few steps ahead. If they repeat, AF might try to ease into the next crew of cost-effective, homegrown talent. A lot depends on how Lux and McKinstry perform. If they feel Lux can play SS, then they might let that happen and open 2B for Busch, with McKinstry sharing time there and in LF. Looking further ahead, Hoese can replace Turner the following season. Granted, all prospects don’t work out. But if this group does, they’ll continue to chase championships with an extremely manageable payroll.

Mrtwotone, I didn’t like it at first, but now understand why it was done. In my view, this will be a year where pitching depth is more crucial than usual as pitchers, especially starters, ramp up to their normal workload, Signing Bauer and adding Price and Nelson, neither of whom pitched in 2020, gives them eight guys. Since guys will get hurt, it’s nice having Price, Nelson, and Gonsolin as SPs who are capable of stepping in. In the meantime, those three guys can all be multi-inning relievers, which saves on over-reliance of the backend BP guys.

Getting back to Bauer, it’s conceivable he opts out if he has a lights-out season. Yes, the second year is $45 million, but he might prefer a long-term deal over the two years, with $62 million remaining on the deal. It’s interesting how the contract is structured.

I was at the Detroit game and visibility was poor due to the snow. I found it interesting that statcast claimed Miggy hit the ball 349′, when the wall is labeled as 350′: Another reason he may have thought it hadn’t gone out. Does that mean the pitch was a foot o

It’s always dudes coming on here to crack one liners about pitching or stating how Mike Trout will never reach playoffs. There were never any “REAL” fans clamoring to trade Fletch and if they did then those were posers acting as fans, not real fans.

I love players like Fletch, they become local celebrities and have that grinder mentality. David Eckstein, Nick Madrigal immediately come to mind as well.

This is where the “east coast bias” sort of comes into play. As was said Kike went from one big market team on one coast to another big market team in the other coast. Same for Mookie Betts. Trout playing on the west coast limits his exposure to the big east coast markets. The Angels visit the east maybe once per season, twice sparingly. Angels games are rarely televised back east and a lot of people probably aren’t staying up til 10/10:30pm to start watching one, let alone 12 or 1am to finish one.

This is where i wish they would go back to the unbalanced schedule. Back to the days when teams played two home and two road series against eachother. It would open up much more exposure to good players on west coast and small/mid market teams that a lot of fan bases don’t get to see

Great player. Hits for high average that statcast says is expected per his results, despite being bottom tier in exit velocity, hard hit%, and barrels.

The top ranking K% and decent BB% mixed with the above create a description that says: great hitter-for-average who knows how to hit.

Only nit pick would be that statcast had his defense in 2020 as below average. Of course that season is an anomaly in more ways then it was shortened and does nothing to shade his excellent defense in the years prior.

All in all, great job by the Angels for recognizing his importance to their organization and then extending him past his remaining years of team control.

He was also playing shortstop when he’s more of a 2nd/3rd baseman. GG finalist at 3rd the year prior. His glove will be there for the entire contract. Hopefully his bat doesn’t regress. Great contract either way though.

It might be. Eck went from beloved World Series hero to non tendered three years later to beloved World Series hero for the Cardinals.

Eck was incredibly popular. And he was also great. Fletcher has a ways to go to match the 2001 or 2002 years of Eckstein.

Actually Eck had a 2.2 WAR in his age 26 season and a 4.5 WAR in his age 27 season which is roughly what Fletch projected to reach last year over a full year (age 26). In Fletcher’s age 25 season he was at 3.3. This is all according to fan graphs. Eck Stein was also only league avg once with the bat in 2002 (101 OPS +)

Eckatein’s ceiling is Fletcher’s floor. This kid is only getting better everyday. Eickstein had a good rookie year and sophomore year and the rest of his career was more on the average side of things. On defense alone Fletcher is alot better.

Larry Bowa played 16 seasons and was a 5 time Allstar on his way to becoming a MLB manager. He also had a career .260 BA AND A .300 OBP. Bill Mazeroski a 7 time allstar with a .260 BA and .299 OBP is in the hall of fame because of his famous WS homerun. Yes it only been 1 1/2 seasons but no one knew of Fletcher before he came up and quietly played well. That’s his only knock, is he well rounded and not superb at one thing. Odor just got released with 2 years and 27 million left on his contract and he hit 30+ homeruns 3 out of the last 4 full seasons for a second baseman. Odor also has a career.289 OBP. I remember when Garret Anderson used to get criticized for looking like he wasn’t making a hard effort in the outfield or running to first.. you know Anderson, one of the greatest Angels ever. As long he doesn’t have to much torque on his swing because of his size like Pedroia did, we got ourselves a ballplayer locked down at leadoff. Goo Angels!
