Dodgers Place Cody Bellinger On Injured List

By Anthony Franco | April 9, 2021 at 1:40pm CDT

The Dodgers announced they’ve placed Cody Bellinger on the 10-day injured list with a left calf contusion, retroactive to April 6. Corner outfielder/first baseman Luke Raley has been recalled from the alternate training site in a corresponding move.

Bellinger has been nursing a calf injury since Monday, when he was unintentionally stepped on by Athletics reliever Reymin Guduan in a race to first base. Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts said Bellinger has been able to jog in the past couple days and is making “steady but not significant improvement” (via Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register). It doesn’t seem as if the team’s overly concerned about a potential long-term absence. Bellinger will first be eligible to return April 16.

Raley now has an opportunity to make his major league debut. The Dodgers drafted the left-handed hitter in the seventh round in 2016 but traded him to the Twins in the 2018 Brian Dozier deal. L.A. reacquired Raley last winter as part of the return for Kenta Maeda. The 26-year-old has hit well in limited Triple-A playing time and slashed .275/.350/.471 over 551 career plate appearances at Double-A.

Yet he is a NL MVP and a WS champion at the age of 25. I guess you didn’t watch the WS last year.

Haha! His 2020 WS pandemic season was pretty pedestrian. But in his defense, a lot of star players were the same.

Yet he made two HR saving catches in the OF as well. There were a ton of All Star players that had lousy seasons last year.

Which brought his career BA in the World Series to .121 and his career post-season BA to a robust .189

Someguys just disappear in the playoffs. For as feared of a hitter as Barry Bonds was during the regular season no one feared him in the playoffs

Ah batting average of a 5 game series. That’s a nice way of ignoring that without Bellinger, the dodgers are eliminated in the LCS. Or his hits in the WS lead directly to wins. Or his combined 940 OPS in the first 3 rounds

But hey. It’s the internet. Reality doesn’t matter. Narratives do!

Haha, no one feared Bonds in the playoffs? Ok bro! One mistake to that guy and you lose. He was feared by every pitcher in every at bat even in the playoffs! Now weather he hit in the playoffs is different

Bonds career post season he had a .245 ave. 9 homers, 8 came in 2002, walked 52 times!!! That’s 52 times!! That’s feared bud. You shouldn’t use Bonds and Bellinger in the same sentence.

And his previous five postseasons before 2002: 1 Home Run, 17 walks in 116 plate appearances. One steroid fueld postseason surge did not make Bonds a good postseason hitter

Nobody said he was a good post season hitter, I was responding to him not being feared! 17 of those walks were intentional. Bonds in his post season days is far better then Bellingers. Can’t even compare the two players at all. Now your opinion about his steroid use is debatable. I think he deserves exactly what piazza got, HOF status.

I should flag this for stupidity. Check out Bonds’ 2002 postseason. No one wanted to pitch to him and there was talk of him being the potential first WS MVP ever on the team that lost the WS. A .936 lifetime postseason OPS is ‘disappearing? ‘ What pretell would be being present then?

          @Balk

Bonds, A-Rod, the Rocket, etc all deserve to be in the Hall.
But you gotta tip your hat to the BBWA. You know…those same pencil necked dorks who were picked last on the playground.

They exacted their revenge by convincing a lot of normally savvy baseball fans that these guys “cheated”. One of the all time best mass hatchet jobs ever in sports journalism.

A victory – of sorts – for the little fellas of the world, I guess.

Exactly. One good postseason out of seven. In the height of his steroid use. My original point was that Bellinger usually has good regular season numbers and disappears in the playoffs and Bonds is a great example of that. Take 2002 out of the equation and the numbers aren’t good

He had a horrible month 1 of 2020, and then was quite good month 2 and 3. But knowing that would require you to do the most basic amount of research

Bellinger got off to a really cold start in 2020 and ended up hitting .284/.392/.567 with 10 home runs from August 14th onward. There were a lot of cases in 2020 where because they only played 60 games, one really bad week or two caused numbers to go way down.

Belli is the Spicoli of baseball.
Please take his time, we need him for October.
I would rather see Matt Davidson or DJ Peters get the call up though.
I think Davidson is the next Justin Turner/Max Muncy/Chris Taylor type reclamation project.

Best of luck to Luke, with the opportunity.

DJ Peters had 192 K’s in AA he should not see Majors until he stops swinging at everything

year before AA in A+ he had 189k’s thus 168 in 2019 in less ABs is not improving

Agree datashark – I dont think Railey Reks or Peters are anything more than 5th Of’ers on a bad team –

Pages might be the best shot they have in the system to produce in the bigs are far as on the grass goes and he’s probably 2.5 yrs away

Very true, but with enacting a new stance, missing 80% of spring, and now a 10 day DL, we very well could be looking at a down first half at the plate here for Cody –

But like you say Dodgers wont mind as long as they are getting the Gold glove CF play back in the meantime.

Codys bat has never followed much of a rhythm, couple good swings in Sept is all we will need to see

Honestly, I’d rather see Cody miss 3-4 weeks and come back as if he had a full ST than 10 days just because the bruise is gone

Could be a blessing in disguise if used well. Ala Seager having 2 more months to weight train pre 2020

He got spiked pretty bad. Take the time to heal, no need to potentially compound the issue by playing on it and trying to compensate for pain
