A’s Place J.B. Wendelken On Injured List, Recall Jordan Weems

By TC Zencka | May 2, 2021 at 12:14pm CDT

The A’s placed J.B. Wendelken on the injured list with a strained left oblique today, per the team. They recalled Jordan Weems to take his spot in the bullpen.

Wendelken has been a major player out of the A’s bullpen so far this season, appearing in 15 games and tossing 12 1/3 innings with a 4.38 ERA/3.09 FIP, 43.6 percent groundball rate, 24.1 percent strikeout rate, and 8.6 percent walk rate. A too-high .368 BABIP has negatively affected Wendelken’s bottom line so far this season. His fastball velocity has been down to 93.3 mph, and he’s gotten very few hitters to chase (nine percent chase rate). Still, he’s avoided barrels (only one allowed this season) and largely done a nice job of limiting hard contact.

Weems was signed as a minor league free agent after beginning his career as a third round pick of the Red Sox back in 2011. He brings a three-pitch mix to the bullpen, pairing a 94-to-95 mph heater with a slider versus right-handers and a change-up versus lefties. He’s back on the active roster after a little more than a week at the alternate site. He has three appearances on the year totaling 2 1/3 innings, giving up one earned run on one hit with one walk and three strikeouts.

What’s with all the oblique injuries? Strange.

Cheapskate owners refusing to hire professional yoga instructors to do pre-game stretches, expecting players to get it right themselves 100% of the time, when the slightest inkling of doing the stretch wrong negates it entirely.

That’s comical.. Players used to do their pre game (and exercising in general) warmups at the nearest bar doing 12oz curls and not that long ago either. then players 30+y ago weren’t pampered babies either.

At this point, might as well give each team a 100 roster spots. Bring 40 to the stadium and keep 60 in the hotel. Rule changes, politics and wimpy players = crap league

you try and do something physically demanding though a bad strain, tear, contusion, etc and get back to me on how “wimpy” the players are.

I’ve done it. I should’ve said relatively wimpy players, compared to their predecessors.

Oh, I’m sorry. I misunderstood. I thought you said ‘physically demanding”. Didn’t realize athletes are the only people who have physically demanding jobs. My bad.

Kiddhoff is correct. I’ve worked with sprains, strains, and sick as a dog (pre covid). But these men and the teams they play on have millions on the line… so i definitely understand caution.

JR Richard was “wimpy” according to this logic.

Nolan Ryan ruined the game for you, not any modern player. You think every player was made of elastic like he was and stupidly get mad when like 99.9% of them aren’t.

You must be kidding. Because that’s hilarious. Thanks for telling me what I think. When you have 10 players going on the DL(politically incorrect) everyday, that screams wimpy. Compare to the NFL or rugby.

I can definitely understand both sides of the argument. If I don’t go to work with strains or other injuries like that I’m probably going to get fired. But then again I’m not getting paid millions of dollars on guaranteed contracts either.
