Dodgers Place Cody Bellinger On IL

By Tim Dierkes | June 15, 2021 at 9:08pm CDT

The Dodgers placed center fielder Cody Bellinger on the IL for left hamstring tightness and recalled Mitch White, MLB.com’s Juan Toribio was among those to report.  The timing of the injury is unfortunate, as tonight is the first full-capacity game at Dodger Stadium since before the pandemic.  Bellinger is eligible to be activated on June 22nd, notes Eric Stephen of True Blue L.A.

Bellinger returned from a lengthy IL stint on May 29th after recovering from a hairline fracture in his left fibula.  Now, he’s back to the IL due to a hamstring injury, which first cropped up last Friday.  The Dodgers will again make do without the 2019 NL MVP.  This year, that’s generally meant Chris Taylor and Mookie Betts in center field.  With Max Muncy hitting the IL on Saturday, the Dodgers’ current first base tandem is Matt Beaty and Albert Pujols.  In his 66 plate appearances with the Dodgers, Pujols has a 131 wRC+.  The Dodgers are also without star shortstop Corey Seager, who might return early next month from a broken hand.

In recalling White, the Dodgers have gone to a nine-man bullpen after yesterday’s short start from Tony Gonsolin.

He probably could have prevented the hamstring injury if he had some sticky substance on his balls.

Belli has sticky fingers but it’s from a 100% legal substance.

Or, maybe, the groin lubrication of some Schweddy Balls would have helped?

Yeah. If he was a real ironman he wouldn’t have let those spikes fracture his leg.

I really don’t understand WAR. Mitch White has an ERA and FIP under 4.00 on the season and has struck out a batter per inning pitched but his YTD WAR is -0.8. That’s why I don’t trust WAR when evaluating a player; it seems very subjective.

BWAR is based on runs allowed/9,
FWAR for pitchers is FIP based.
WAR isn’t a great stat for RP, it’s best used to compare longer sample sizes.

No it’s objective, but also almost completely arbitrary.

It’s been beaten to death, but still worth a thumbs’ up.

What is it good for? Arguments. That’s pretty much it.

WAR, what’s it good for? That joke went WAA over my head.

WAR, for RPs, is generally worthless.

But in this case, part of it is the assessment of his peripherals stats. He has an unsustainable HR/FB of 5.9% and an unsustainable LOB% of 40.8%. When those two numbers look more like 13..4% and 72.1% (MLB average this year), then his ERA will go way up.

No Bellinger. No Muncy. No Seager.

    NO PROBLEM!

It’s almost as if they could use some utility guys. But I just can’t think of any that were on the market *cough* Kiki *cough* Joc *cough*.

Hernandez for sure, but Pederson was never any kind of utility guy. They tried him out in that role but he totally stunk. You don’t want him playing anything but LF.

Per the end of this piece? Who had Phat Albert, small sample size, spot playing/platooning, and other caveats, batting his best in Dodgertown since his first season with the Haloes? socraticgadfly.blogspot.com/2021/05/pujols-to-dodg…

Yet is still -0.3 WAR. He is employed in a part time role where he has had some success. Yet the Angels asked him to do the same and he wanted out.

So Pujols is great, got it.

Winner winner for dumbest comment of the day! The angels released Pujols because Walsh was pushing him out of the building and there was no longer room for him. The media wants you to think that he’s a bad guy cuz he doesn’t wanna be a back up. The angels want you to think that as well. Don’t read into every headline…
