Giants Outright Scott Kazmir

By Mark Polishuk | June 11, 2021 at 4:37pm CDT

JUNE 11: Kazmir has cleared outright waivers, the Giants announced. It remains to be seen if he’ll accept an assignment to Triple-A Sacramento or elect free agency.

JUNE 5, 5:25 PM: Kazmir has officially been DFA’d by the Giants. Camilo Doval has been recalled to claim his roster spot, per Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com (via Twitter). Doval owns a 7.59 ERA/7.54 FIP in 13 appearances covering 10 2/3 innings on the year.

JUNE 5, 1:51 PM: The Giants have designated left-hander Scott Kazmir for assignment, The San Francisco Chronicle’s Susan Slusser reports.  The move could end Kazmir’s comeback attempt after three appearances and seven total innings.

Kazmir last pitched in the majors with the Dodgers in 2016, and his career had seemingly drawn to a close before the southpaw announced a comeback attempt in early 2020.  His efforts led to a minor league deal with San Francisco this past offseason, and Kazmir then found himself on a big league mound once more after the Giants selected his contract two weeks ago.

As one might expect, it wasn’t entirely smooth sailing for Kazmir after his long layoff, as he posted a 6.43 ERA over his seven innings and was tagged for three home runs.  Kazmir started two of his three games, and only just returned to the Giants to start last night’s contest after spending a few days on the restricted list.  Slusser reports that Kazmir stepped away from the team to mourn the death of his best friend, who passed away last Tuesday.

It’s possible another team might be intrigued by what they’ve seen in Kazmir and could make a waiver claim, though probably the likeliest outcome is that the veteran clears waivers.  Assuming Kazmir is open to continuing his comeback attempt, he would likely be willing to accept an outright assignment to the minors, or the Giants could conceivably just release him if they feel he doesn’t offer much more to the team.

Logan Webb was placed back on the 10-day IL just two days ago with another shoulder issue, while Aaron Sanchez is also still sidelined recovering from biceps tightness.  Sanchez had reportedly been throwing side sessions, however, so the Kazmir DFA could be a sign that the Giants are expecting Sanchez back relatively soon.  San Francisco also has a chance to reset its rotation due to an off-day on Monday.

I’d like that. Same with Harvey. Baseball is entertainment and it would be nice to have those names attached to a great season. It would be like how the Mets brought back Lee Mazzilli as a bench player for 86.

Not from a production standpoint. I’d love to see him in the organization. He can still throw 95, so maybe Hefner or Jake can help him find something.

I think the “humor” comes from them designating Tropeano for assignment just a couple of days ago to bring Kazmir back, only to designate Kazmir after one additional appearance. Why designate a player who was doing okay for you if you’re not going to give his replacement a leash longer than one additional appearance?

Tropeano had an opt out date that just passed, likely June 1. Giants added him just after that, and then optioned him for the 3rd time this year

Basically the giants honored the opt out he just triggered. They acknowledged they weren’t going to keep him up even though they technically called him up in time, and gave him a chance elsewhere

Maybe do a little homework before criticizing logic?

I don’t think Beede ever had “brilliant starts” let’s be honest here. He did however flash some nasty stuff, his fastball change-up combo plays similarly to Gausmans fastball-split. I think Beede as a reliever is a nice change for his career.

You’re right I forgot about that. But it’s really hard to find any other starts where Beede was dominant. Closest thing I can remember is when he threw 5 shutout vs. LAD. Nothing else really stands out from his career as a starter.

Beede has 17 walks in 17IP while Brebbia only has 3IP at this point. I wouldn’t expect much. No one else is really rocking it at AAA. Giants are likely to add 1-2 bullpen arms at the trade deadline.

Under that logic, maybe the Mets can give him a look too. After all, you won’t be playing lousy teams so often as the season goes on.

BTW, I know Mets Hyperbole don’t keep you informed much, but the Marlins biggest need is a bullpen.

Yes, our offense has flaws, but they’ve given our bullpen leads. You take away the 7 blown saves, the Marlins are sitting in first place right now with that same offense…injuries and all.

Don’t be too sure about your team. You can’t ignore how poorly they’ve looked against teams that are better than the three they’ve feasted on. Unless low 80s wins the division, I wouldn’t count on the Mets.

@mets – I don’t care either way about Mets and yes, I’d say they have strong pitching. HOWEVER, to win games you have to score more runs than the other team. That isn’t really been easy for them to do. A team that is barely over .500 isn’t a team to get all high and mighty about hearing another team that is barely over .500. Statistics seem to suggest those series could go either way.

Mets – see, that is why we can’t have a logical conversation. You resort to the crystal ball to make a point that you can’t prove and that has no relevance to your original point. What they do or do not do the next 2 games against the Padres in June has nothing at all to prove that either the Cards or Cubs should he scared to play them when in fact, at this point in the season they are barely over .500. Why don’t you just go for broke and say when they win their next 90 games?

The last time the Mets were ‘relevant’ was 2015. The last time they were TRULY relevant was 1986. I don’t count the Subway Series because everyone and their mother knew that they didn’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of winning it.

Actually, I do listen to that team like I listen to all of the NL East teams. I have NL East (and all teams) games on my plan. The Mets team is more homerish than all the other NL East broadcast teams – among the worst in all of MLB.

Even Ron Darling said on a segment when he was talking about Cano’s suspension, that their team uses all the “usual hyperbole” for their own players. Mets Hyperbole! Not my words. Ron Darling’s words. Your own guy, on your own broadcast team.

And there’s nothing “slight” about their homer efforts compared to 90% of the other MLB broadcast teams.

To add, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – this Mets broadcast team would make the 1962 Mets sound better than the 1927 Yankees. They’d convince your fan base that Frank Thomas (1951-1966) and Marv Throneberry were better than Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig.

The velocity is there but not the stuff. He was hitting 93 MPH last night.
If he had nastier stuff with less velo he could be a productive MLB pitcher. But he’s trying to pitch like he’s 10 years younger. Jaime Moyer pitched into his 40’s with slow stuff, Kazmir should try and reinvent himself.
Wish him the best and glad he made a successful comeback.

Sounds just like an A’s fan, especially from the UK, always crying but never spending a dime on the team or stadium. You don’t need to worry about the Giants and how they operate. I guess you haven’t paid attention to how your team has been run over the years. Maybe Montreal will build you a new stadium, or Portland or Vegas. I kinda like how this one sounds, THE UK A’s. UK stands for yuck, then they can be the YUCKING A’s !!!! Where ever the A’s go they should take Oakland with them.

Like, what does he even mean? What does “Especially from the UK” even mean other than “Im a loser whos fake good team is about to crash and burn in a month or two” lol Giants fans shrink into the 2 year old mindset they ALL have. Most stupid, entry level fanbase ever. Techie scum all.

While I don’t agree with @talking baseball, you have to admit that the post by @A’sfaninUK, was indefensible. He’s making huge accusations based on an assumption. No where is there any proof that the Giants fired “… someone because their best friend died”.

Correlation is not causation. Just because he was DFA’d soon after his friend died doesn’t mean that was the reason. I saw Kazmir in both in starts, and with other pitchers coming off the IL soon, there was plenty of reason to let Kazmir go, other than the personal tragedy.

Clearly @talking baseball overreacted, but I can see why. That kind of crap has no place here, or anywhere for that matter.

They didn’t fire because his best friend died. They fired him because he wasn’t very good coincidentally around the same time his best friend died. I don’t like the Giants, never have never will, but they shouldn’t be expected to keep him on the roster just because he is in mourning.

This is the dumbest comment I’ve ever seen on this forum. The A’s feed their minor leaguers worse food than prisoners eat. Your franchise is the laughing stock of professional sports. You guys signed Billy Butler for 20 million dollars, it didn’t work out, and that was apparently so traumatic you will never sign another free agent. I know jelly fish with more spine than the A’s front office. John Fisher is wiping his butt with hundred dollar bills and laughing at A’s fans.

Don’t ever do anything for someone (something?) if you don’t think they’ll do the same back for you…yeah, that logic doesn’t surprise me at all from you.

Kazmir wasn’t fired. He was designated for assignment after stepping away to mourn the death of his best friend. Why do you choose to put a negative spin on it? Is it because the Giants have once again moved ahead of the A’s in the championship picture?

Delusional Giants fans hate reality so much, Kazmir literally was fired, no matter what spin you want to throw on it.

The A’s literally have bought more titles to the Bay than the Giants have and while both teams are in first now, the Giants wont be in September, but the A’s sure will.

Farhan is a joke of a GM, period. Hasn’t done a thing to make this team better. SD and LA bout to smoke you back where you belong with AZ and CO. Cant wait to watch all you casuals disappear down the stretch when your senior citizen team of wash ups all get hurt and stop hitting against AAA scrubs.

No, he literally wasn’t fired. He wasn’t released by the team, I’m sure they’re hoping he doesn’t get claimed and they can hang onto him with the AAA team.

Just accept that Farhan has made the Giants a better team and they are well positioned to sustain their success moving forward. He took over when they were a last place team and now they are looking like a potential Wild Card team at the very least. He’s improved their farm system from being in the bottom half of MLB to being in the top half. All of that is the definition of making a team better.

A’s fan really don’t have any room to talk about poorly run front offices. If you buy a Matt Chapman jersey now you can probably wear it for 2 more years before it’s irrelevant and he is playing for a team that doesn’t cry poor all the time. The A’s haven’t won a playoff series in decades. Have fun watching their last championship on VHS.

“JUNE 11: Kazmir has cleared outright waivers, the Giants announced. It remains to be seen if he’ll accept an assignment to Triple-A Sacramento or elect free agency.”

The Giants transaction page says it’s a done deal that he’ll stay in the organization.

06/11/21: San Francisco Giants sent LHP Scott Kazmir outright to Sacramento River Cats.
