JUNE 11: Kazmir has cleared outright waivers, the Giants announced. It remains to be seen if he’ll accept an assignment to Triple-A Sacramento or elect free agency.
JUNE 5, 5:25 PM: Kazmir has officially been DFA’d by the Giants. Camilo Doval has been recalled to claim his roster spot, per Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com (via Twitter). Doval owns a 7.59 ERA/7.54 FIP in 13 appearances covering 10 2/3 innings on the year.
JUNE 5, 1:51 PM: The Giants have designated left-hander Scott Kazmir for assignment, The San Francisco Chronicle’s Susan Slusser reports. The move could end Kazmir’s comeback attempt after three appearances and seven total innings.
Kazmir last pitched in the majors with the Dodgers in 2016, and his career had seemingly drawn to a close before the southpaw announced a comeback attempt in early 2020. His efforts led to a minor league deal with San Francisco this past offseason, and Kazmir then found himself on a big league mound once more after the Giants selected his contract two weeks ago.
As one might expect, it wasn’t entirely smooth sailing for Kazmir after his long layoff, as he posted a 6.43 ERA over his seven innings and was tagged for three home runs. Kazmir started two of his three games, and only just returned to the Giants to start last night’s contest after spending a few days on the restricted list. Slusser reports that Kazmir stepped away from the team to mourn the death of his best friend, who passed away last Tuesday.
It’s possible another team might be intrigued by what they’ve seen in Kazmir and could make a waiver claim, though probably the likeliest outcome is that the veteran clears waivers. Assuming Kazmir is open to continuing his comeback attempt, he would likely be willing to accept an outright assignment to the minors, or the Giants could conceivably just release him if they feel he doesn’t offer much more to the team.
Logan Webb was placed back on the 10-day IL just two days ago with another shoulder issue, while Aaron Sanchez is also still sidelined recovering from biceps tightness. Sanchez had reportedly been throwing side sessions, however, so the Kazmir DFA could be a sign that the Giants are expecting Sanchez back relatively soon. San Francisco also has a chance to reset its rotation due to an off-day on Monday.
Lol wth
Could the Mets take a flyer?
I’d like that. Same with Harvey. Baseball is entertainment and it would be nice to have those names attached to a great season. It would be like how the Mets brought back Lee Mazzilli as a bench player for 86.
You want Harvey back on the Mets? I wish him well, but he’s a mess right now.
Agreed.
Not from a production standpoint. I’d love to see him in the organization. He can still throw 95, so maybe Hefner or Jake can help him find something.
The guy had the guts to take a shot and work his way back to the bigs. It didn’t work out.
I fail to see the humor.
I think the “humor” comes from them designating Tropeano for assignment just a couple of days ago to bring Kazmir back, only to designate Kazmir after one additional appearance. Why designate a player who was doing okay for you if you’re not going to give his replacement a leash longer than one additional appearance?
Tropeano had an opt out date that just passed, likely June 1. Giants added him just after that, and then optioned him for the 3rd time this year
Basically the giants honored the opt out he just triggered. They acknowledged they weren’t going to keep him up even though they technically called him up in time, and gave him a chance elsewhere
Maybe do a little homework before criticizing logic?
Are you saying he DOESN’T know more than say, a team President?
Does the $8.6 Million he makes while he works his way back have anything to do with this Nobel comeback attempt?
No, because he was entitled to that money regardless.
Given that he could have stayed home and still collected that money… yet he tried to comeback and contribute on a baseball field.. I’d say you failed to make your point Rocky
This is sad
His friend died then gets DFA, I been there.
Maybe this is a sign that Aaron Sanchez is close to returning. Still bummed that they DFA’d Tropeano in favor of Kazmir though.
They also have Beede & Brebbia on rehab assignments. Possible that those guys are nearing a return.
Brebbia will be a great help, and much needed. I wouldn’t count on Beede even when healthy.
Beede had some brilliant starts before his injury, and he really looked like he was on the verge of a breakout. I just think he needs a while more to return
I don’t think Beede ever had “brilliant starts” let’s be honest here. He did however flash some nasty stuff, his fastball change-up combo plays similarly to Gausmans fastball-split. I think Beede as a reliever is a nice change for his career.
He had that one against the Mets and DeGrom
You’re right I forgot about that. But it’s really hard to find any other starts where Beede was dominant. Closest thing I can remember is when he threw 5 shutout vs. LAD. Nothing else really stands out from his career as a starter.
Beede has 17 walks in 17IP while Brebbia only has 3IP at this point. I wouldn’t expect much. No one else is really rocking it at AAA. Giants are likely to add 1-2 bullpen arms at the trade deadline.
Sam Long is rocking at AAA, hometown kid also as fair oaks is a suburb of Sacramento the team he’s currently playing for.
‘Beede & Brebbia’ sounds like it should be a store name in a Harry Potter book….
Father Time beats everyone.
Maybe the marlins could use him. Ik they have good pitching but they have no shot at anything this year. They should try to lose more games for a bettter pick. I mean they’ll already lose a lot of games without him but he’ll add maybe 2-3 more losses for you guys! Just an opinion!
Under that logic, maybe the Mets can give him a look too. After all, you won’t be playing lousy teams so often as the season goes on.
BTW, I know Mets Hyperbole don’t keep you informed much, but the Marlins biggest need is a bullpen.
Bullpen and offense….. and if he signs with us he gets a free ride to the NLDS. Our division sucks. This will be easy.
Yes, our offense has flaws, but they’ve given our bullpen leads. You take away the 7 blown saves, the Marlins are sitting in first place right now with that same offense…injuries and all.
Don’t be too sure about your team. You can’t ignore how poorly they’ve looked against teams that are better than the three they’ve feasted on. Unless low 80s wins the division, I wouldn’t count on the Mets.
But after the NLDS you go missing
@PutPeteRoseInTheHall
So true. In fact, when the Mets were faltering last year, he disappeared. He only showed up when they were looking decent.
You really think the Mets can’t beat the cardinals or Cubs??? Lol. Our pitching would be so scary to face. I promise you they don’t want to see us.. in fact I’ll bet that if that’s the matchup…. Vegas would probably say the Mets have better odds. (Better roster)
12-3 against three of the worst teams in MLB. 15-20 against everyone else that’s better than those teams.
Also, remember that I’m a Marlins fan. We’ve seen you head-to-head against our team when your team was healthy. Sorry if we weren’t impressed. Now if the Mets take Ron Kulpa everywhere, then….
@mets – I don’t care either way about Mets and yes, I’d say they have strong pitching. HOWEVER, to win games you have to score more runs than the other team. That isn’t really been easy for them to do. A team that is barely over .500 isn’t a team to get all high and mighty about hearing another team that is barely over .500. Statistics seem to suggest those series could go either way.
They are about to be 29-23 after taking the next two from the Padres….. barley 500????
Hey, well except for those 7 blown saves and your BP in general, the Marlins have been really impressive.
Mets – see, that is why we can’t have a logical conversation. You resort to the crystal ball to make a point that you can’t prove and that has no relevance to your original point. What they do or do not do the next 2 games against the Padres in June has nothing at all to prove that either the Cards or Cubs should he scared to play them when in fact, at this point in the season they are barely over .500. Why don’t you just go for broke and say when they win their next 90 games?
Barley is malted to make beer.
At this very moment, Anthony Bass is trying real hard to make it an 8th blown save. He lucked into 2 outs, but seems determined.
Mattingly pulls Bass with the bases loaded and a 5-2 lead for Anthony Bender, but I’m sure Bass is feeling accomplished knowing that he put Bender in a situation of one big hit and the lead is blown.
There we go! We did it! Number 8! 3 in the last 4 games! The other one was bullpen throwing batting practice after Poteet got hurt.
Sandy Leon – the only dependable reliever in the last 4 games.
It’s just comical at this point.
Come on guys….the guy throws 91-92 during his peak…and he’s long past that…..plus the guy hasn’t pitched since 2016…..you mean to tell me that the Mets or the Marlins have nobody younger capable of at least giving them the same if not better….highly improbable
Mmmm. I like beer.
Anthony Bass with a fistbump to the air for Cimber finishing off the blown save loss!
Anthony Bass feeling accomplished. Leading the charge of the Marlins bullpen failures today
The last time the Mets were ‘relevant’ was 2015. The last time they were TRULY relevant was 1986. I don’t count the Subway Series because everyone and their mother knew that they didn’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of winning it.
WTH kind of convoluted logic is that? The Yankees are about to be the best team in baseball after they win their next 20. Therefore they are the best team in baseball.
So you can play in the WS yet still be irrelevant? You’re trolling.
The Mets are 4-12 against teams that are above .500. That doesn’t bode real well for them in the playoffs.
6 games seperate the first place Mets and last place Marlins in the standings so it may be too soon to say “they have no shot at anything this year” they still have a lot of baseball left and a lot of games against eachother to write them off so dismissively
@Rsox
Shhhh….don’t let @MetsFan22 know that. He’s already counting down the Mets Magic Number. Besides, he doesn’t know any better because SNY/PIX have been telling him all his knowledge for years with that good ole Mets Hyperbole.
You really have no idea what SNY actually says, do you? They’re slight homers like most announcers but overall they’re pretty straight forward.
Actually, I do listen to that team like I listen to all of the NL East teams. I have NL East (and all teams) games on my plan. The Mets team is more homerish than all the other NL East broadcast teams – among the worst in all of MLB.
Even Ron Darling said on a segment when he was talking about Cano’s suspension, that their team uses all the “usual hyperbole” for their own players. Mets Hyperbole! Not my words. Ron Darling’s words. Your own guy, on your own broadcast team.
And there’s nothing “slight” about their homer efforts compared to 90% of the other MLB broadcast teams.
To add, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – this Mets broadcast team would make the 1962 Mets sound better than the 1927 Yankees. They’d convince your fan base that Frank Thomas (1951-1966) and Marv Throneberry were better than Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig.
This has Braves written all over it. Cole Hamels, Bartolo… Scott Kazmir?
@rangers. I hope not. Although his 1 walk in the 7 innings pitched this year in MLB would be a improvement on several of the current Braves bullpen members….
I bet if I were a fan of a contending team I’d think the same thing lol.
Idk, this just feels like a Braves or Orioles pickup.
Yeh, maybe they can coax Clemens out of retirement too….what a rotation!
Ruben Amaro recently started that Hamels is nowhere near in pitching shape. I found that to be incredibly disappointing to say the least.
well it was fun while it lasted
It is quite possible the most recent personal issues he had are behind his departure. Whatever the reason, it is definitely a tough break for him.
they could just restricted list him again
Apparently his best friend died.
sfchronicle.com/sports/giants/article/Giants-desig…
I’m just glad he was pulled after the second inning. This was always a lame move.
The velocity is there but not the stuff. He was hitting 93 MPH last night.
If he had nastier stuff with less velo he could be a productive MLB pitcher. But he’s trying to pitch like he’s 10 years younger. Jaime Moyer pitched into his 40’s with slow stuff, Kazmir should try and reinvent himself.
Wish him the best and glad he made a successful comeback.
Heck, Rich Hill’s still around and effective.
Hill is still around because he has no mileage on his arm. Most of his injuries have been blisters. Moyer was able to stick around because he could actually pitch. He didn’t rely on blowing hitters away. Kazmir was a nice story but its probably time to hang ’em up
Cardinals? They need any arm
Disgusting, soulless, inhumane behavior by the Giants front office. Firing someone because their best friend died? Farhan is a disgusting joke, he’s nothing but a techie: a computer in a body with no respect for the human condition.
Terrible behavior by the Giants front office here, hope the rest of MLB is watching how they operate over there…cant wait for these May pretenders to fall back to the cellar where they belong.
Sounds just like an A’s fan, especially from the UK, always crying but never spending a dime on the team or stadium. You don’t need to worry about the Giants and how they operate. I guess you haven’t paid attention to how your team has been run over the years. Maybe Montreal will build you a new stadium, or Portland or Vegas. I kinda like how this one sounds, THE UK A’s. UK stands for yuck, then they can be the YUCKING A’s !!!! Where ever the A’s go they should take Oakland with them.
It’s a good thing you didn’t take that A’s fan comment personally and overreact, talking baseball
Like, what does he even mean? What does “Especially from the UK” even mean other than “Im a loser whos fake good team is about to crash and burn in a month or two” lol Giants fans shrink into the 2 year old mindset they ALL have. Most stupid, entry level fanbase ever. Techie scum all.
johnrealtime:
While I don’t agree with @talking baseball, you have to admit that the post by @A’sfaninUK, was indefensible. He’s making huge accusations based on an assumption. No where is there any proof that the Giants fired “… someone because their best friend died”.
Correlation is not causation. Just because he was DFA’d soon after his friend died doesn’t mean that was the reason. I saw Kazmir in both in starts, and with other pitchers coming off the IL soon, there was plenty of reason to let Kazmir go, other than the personal tragedy.
Clearly @talking baseball overreacted, but I can see why. That kind of crap has no place here, or anywhere for that matter.
They didn’t fire because his best friend died. They fired him because he wasn’t very good coincidentally around the same time his best friend died. I don’t like the Giants, never have never will, but they shouldn’t be expected to keep him on the roster just because he is in mourning.
@hiflew if you dont like the Giants, dont EVER stick up for them, because they will NEVER EVER do the same back to you. Remember this.
I can’t personally ever envision a time I my life in which I will need the SF Giants organization to stick up for me.
No baseball team will ever stick up for me. That is not the nature of the fan/baseball team relationship.
‘I can’t personally ever envision a time I my life in which I will need the SF Giants organization to stick up for me.’
I was having a really hard time last week and I remember saying to myself ‘Forget Jesus, I could really use the Giants right now…’
This is the dumbest comment I’ve ever seen on this forum. The A’s feed their minor leaguers worse food than prisoners eat. Your franchise is the laughing stock of professional sports. You guys signed Billy Butler for 20 million dollars, it didn’t work out, and that was apparently so traumatic you will never sign another free agent. I know jelly fish with more spine than the A’s front office. John Fisher is wiping his butt with hundred dollar bills and laughing at A’s fans.
Don’t ever do anything for someone (something?) if you don’t think they’ll do the same back for you…yeah, that logic doesn’t surprise me at all from you.
Lame supposition & over reaction on your part A’sfaninUK. You’d better clean the crud off your crystal ball
Lame reply @curly you never even explained why other than you might be a whiny hurt Giants fan.
I’m a braves fan, I’m just not a fan of wildly, uninformed posts A’sfaninUK
Kazmir wasn’t fired. He was designated for assignment after stepping away to mourn the death of his best friend. Why do you choose to put a negative spin on it? Is it because the Giants have once again moved ahead of the A’s in the championship picture?
Delusional Giants fans hate reality so much, Kazmir literally was fired, no matter what spin you want to throw on it.
The A’s literally have bought more titles to the Bay than the Giants have and while both teams are in first now, the Giants wont be in September, but the A’s sure will.
Farhan is a joke of a GM, period. Hasn’t done a thing to make this team better. SD and LA bout to smoke you back where you belong with AZ and CO. Cant wait to watch all you casuals disappear down the stretch when your senior citizen team of wash ups all get hurt and stop hitting against AAA scrubs.
No, he literally wasn’t fired. He wasn’t released by the team, I’m sure they’re hoping he doesn’t get claimed and they can hang onto him with the AAA team.
Just accept that Farhan has made the Giants a better team and they are well positioned to sustain their success moving forward. He took over when they were a last place team and now they are looking like a potential Wild Card team at the very least. He’s improved their farm system from being in the bottom half of MLB to being in the top half. All of that is the definition of making a team better.
A’sfaninUK:
“Farhan is a joke of a GM, period. Hasn’t done a thing to make this team better.”
Dude, stop. You’re losing massive amounts of what credibility you might have had.
@AholeintheUK
“Disgusting, soulless”? That’s self-descriptive. (AKA “projection”)
Time to mute this ugly little troll. Right. Now.
Where did you get that story from…firing him because of his best friends passing……Bravo’s Housewives of California?
A’s fan really don’t have any room to talk about poorly run front offices. If you buy a Matt Chapman jersey now you can probably wear it for 2 more years before it’s irrelevant and he is playing for a team that doesn’t cry poor all the time. The A’s haven’t won a playoff series in decades. Have fun watching their last championship on VHS.
Cardinals need to sign him for depth, give him an August 1 opt-out date in a minor league deal.
Mets need to trade Alonso, Lindor, Conforto McNeil Davis and nimmo. They don’t want to play and they are all immature children
Wow icantstandyous! This should catch the attention of MetsFan22!
on the bright side Kazmir still making 8 million this year.
How so?
Deferred money from the contract he signed with the Dodgers.
Wow, even all these years later. Thanks for the info, FG.
Ohh noo Doval is called up again? Hopefully he’s better now but I still think he needs a good few more months. Maybe a September call up is better but I could be wrong. I’m not in the front office.
GOD its going to be SO FUNNY watching the Giants crumble this season, grab the popcorn folks, some jumped-up losers who think they’re the best are about to get their proper comeuppance!
What did the Giants team do to you to bring so much vitriol? Not even trolls on Twitter use this many capital letters.
Yea that’s just how this guy is. He is special
Anaheim will be calling
Bet they would have liked to keep that guy they DFA’d a couple days ago to bring back Scott. He was pitching well before getting dfa’d
They knew they were going to designate Tropeano for awhile now. That’s why they added Leone to the 40 man
I’d be fun to see him wear NYM Orange and Blue finally.. He can’t be much worse than Peterson at this point. Peterson needs to be sent down soon anyway to control his innings for the season.
*It’d
Always liked Kazmir. The only time I saw Pedro pitch live in Fenway was against Kazmir – Kazmir won that game.
The Kazmir Good feeling story may be over! Congratulations for coming back! You worked hard and Good Luck in the future!
So Kazmir to the Rays and a future ALCS MVP?
“JUNE 11: Kazmir has cleared outright waivers, the Giants announced. It remains to be seen if he’ll accept an assignment to Triple-A Sacramento or elect free agency.”
The Giants transaction page says it’s a done deal that he’ll stay in the organization.
06/11/21: San Francisco Giants sent LHP Scott Kazmir outright to Sacramento River Cats.
Orioles should have cut Harvey and claimed Kazmir, IMO.
Can’t wait until he makes his MLB return in 2027
Haha
It’s been a lonely 14 years without Victor Zambrano.
