Phillies Reinstate Bryce Harper From Injured List

By Mark Polishuk | June 5, 2021 at 10:51am CDT

Bryce Harper has been reinstated from the 10-day injured list, the Phillies announced.  A roster spot for Harper was created when right-hander Hector Neris was placed on the paternity list.

Harper hit the IL due to a forearm contusion on May 25, and his activation comes as a bit of a surprise since manager Joe Girardi said just yesterday that the outfielder wasn’t yet ready to rejoin the Phillies’ lineup.  Another 24 hours of treatment seems to have done the trick, however, and Harper will now get back into action.

Beyond the forearm contusion, wrist and shoulder troubles have bothered Harper this season, with the wrist problem perhaps being the biggest factor in a 2-for-25 slump for Harper prior to his IL placement.  Even with that slump weighing down his numbers, Harper is still in the midst of a tremendous season, hitting .274/.395/.489 with seven home runs over 162 plate appearances.

Harper’s return brings an enormous boost to a Philadelphia squad that is still missing Didi Gregorius and Scott Kingery to injury, while Roman Quinn is out for the season due to a ruptured Achilles tendon.  Brad Miller has handled most of the right field duties in Harper’s absence, and the utilityman might now be shifted over to shortstop or third base.

So yesterday the Phillies said he’s not ready to return, and then all of sudden today, he is activated. I believe the league will eventually come down on the way the Phillies list and report on their injured players. This isn’t the first episode.

its lip service. you clearly havent been following how Girardi has talked about injuries recently.

This isn’t exclusive to the Phillies in being vague about injured players. There can be some strategic advantage to not showing all of your cards to an opposing team. Things can change in a hurry so all one can do is be prepared.

MLB is now in bed with the gambling industry. Those in that industry will demand that teams publish good information about injuries.

If you knew anything about HIPA you’d understand that players have a right to keep the nature of their injuries private. Just because they are professionals does not change this.

I know all about HIPAA (note the correct spelling) and I am bound by it every day. This is not a HIPAA issue.

HIPAA only applies to Heath providers, health clearing houses, and insurance companies. The Phillies are none of those. HIPAA does not apply.

Watched the Nats game least night and boy did we get lucky when Jankowski made the base running error. Avila made a great play

On a contending team he would’ve been designated this morning.

Hopefully he stays healthy. I’m a Mets fan but I wanna win the division with everyone intact. That plus, you know, human considerations.

I felt the same when Magic Johnson came up lame in the 1989-90 NBA Finals against the Pistons. As a Pistons fan I was glad that Ervin was out but kind of wished he wasn’t so the Bad Boys could beat a Laker team at 100 percent.

“Tremendous” might be a bit of an exaggeration.

Seemed clear he was ready yesterday but smartly they decided better for him not to face Scherzer in first game back.

The Nats should have left Harper in the minors for 3 years, and kept him at Catcher.
He left in free agency anyway.
That bat at catcher is rare, like a unicorn.
    A Mike Piazza unicorn.
Glad to see him back though.

Had a big RBI today too. This Phillies team has a lot of problems, but a healthy Harper makes them significantly better. I don’t have high hopes for this season, but hopefully they get over .500. This team has been borderline unwatchable at times, but today’s lineup was exciting.

Phils need to replace Velasquez NOW!!!! he is killing us.We have seen this same act for a few years now.To get something decent you will need to trade someone decent even if it
    hurts.
