MRI Reveals No UCL Damage For Reds’ Tejay Antone

By Mark Polishuk | June 27, 2021 at 10:02am CDT

JUNE 27: In encouraging news, Antone told reporters (including Bobby Nightengale of the Cincinnati Enquirer and C. Trent Rosecrans of the Athletic) that an MRI revealed no damage to his UCL. The righty suggested he’s targeting a return immediately after the All-Star break, although he’ll be shut down from throwing for the moment.

JUNE 26: The Reds announced that right-hander Tejay Antone has been placed on the 10-day IL due to a right forearm strain.  Left-hander Cionel Perez was recalled from Triple-A Louisville in the corresponding move.

Antone only just returned earlier this week from an 11-day stint on the injured list due to inflammation in that same forearm.  It certainly isn’t a good sign that the righty is so quickly headed back to the IL with what looks like an even more serious forearm issue, especially since Antone already has a Tommy John surgery in his health history.  It certainly looks like Antone will miss more than just a minimal amount of time with his latest injury, as the Reds will want to be as cautious as possible in avoiding any more serious damage.

In part because of that earlier TJ procedure that wiped out his 2017 season, Antone didn’t make his Major League debut until 2020, but he has made up for lost time with some impressive numbers.  Over 69 innings in the big leagues, Antone has a 2.22 ERA/3.32 SIERA, 32.5% strikeout rate, and 48% grounder rate.  While a .194 BABIP has helped minimize the damage from all those ground balls, Antone also isn’t allowing much hard contact.

There was some speculation in Spring Training that Antone could win a rotation job, though a minor hip injury scuttled that idea and placed him in the Reds’ bullpen.  It ended up working out for the best, given that Antone has been more or less the only consistent arm in a very shaky Cincinnati relief corps.  Even with Antone’ s 1.60 ERA over 33 2/3 relief innings this season, the Reds bullpen ranks last in the majors in ERA.  Assuming Antone misses a noteworthy amount of time recovering from this forearm strain, it will put even more pressure on the Reds’ front office to land some bullpen help before the July 30 trade deadline.

Unloading iglesias and Bradley would have looked genius if they just could have replaced their average performances. This is one of the worst bullpens of all times for a contending team. Garrett and his 8 era is the closer. Wow !

It’s not like Iggy and Bradley are setting the world on fire. It’s time to bring up Lodolo and Greene. Look, this bullpen needs help and players are commodities. They’re under contract and teams can use them as they see fit. Don’t give me this crap about ruining them in the BP because they’ll be needed as starters down the road.

Tejay Antone would be on Bill Simmons’ Reggie Cleveland All-Star team. I had no idea he’s a white guy from Oklahoma.

I dont know if it’s racist to see a name and assume its a black guys name. Some names sound rooted in different cultures, its definitely a little ignorant but its not racist and its not hurting anyone saying “wow i looked at his name and thought he was black”. If someones last name was Lee or Chang you’d think they were Asian, would it be racist if they werent?

Umm… yes, assuming someone’s race solely based on their last name is racist. Slaves had their names changed – or do you really think there are a lot of black Irish Americans? One of the most common last name in the US is Williams – do you think all those black Williams are descendants from England/Wales?

Robert E Lee is a very famous non-Asian directly related to US History.

gonna half to bring greene up to work out of bullpen, then when gray is health, put santellian down there too. then hope after all-star game lorenzen gets healthy. but still gonna need to trade for help, cannot keep calling on guys like perez, hendrix, hembree, ect. not and expect to win. not trading for help or calling up greene, then hurry up and trade castellanos and get some arms for later

Wasting Greene for the sake of bullpen help is silly.

Indeed, then they’d have to shut Greene down in Aug 2022 as a starter because he didn’t build out his innings in 2021.

Agreed, Greene only has 50 IP this year, after two lost years. Lodolo only has 30 IP. I get the motivation to help out a beleaguered BP, but it’s way too early for that. They’re going to have to find solutions elsewhere. Vlad, Santillan, and/or Hoffman?

A lot of teams start young starting pitching prospects in the bullpen to get them acclimated to the majors before tossing them into the rotation!!!

Look, the major leagues’ 3, 657, 463rd GM, amazing, I didn’t know there were that many MLB teams.
Judge the other teams that said they cut payroll due to lost income from the Covid pandemic and are already selling players before July 31st trading deadline!
