Mariners Place Jake Fraley On COVID-19 IL

By Darragh McDonald | July 18, 2021 at 1:58pm CDT

Mariners outfielder Jake Fraley is going on the COVID-19 injured list, with fellow outfielder Dillon Thomas being recalled to take his place on the active roster. Manager Scott Servais revealed that Fraley has tested positive for COVID-19 and also has symptoms, according to Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times. Servais said the majority of players with whom Fraley was in close contact have been vaccinated, so they’re hoping that will stop the virus from spreading further.

This is a very unfortunate development for what had previously been a breakout year for Fraley. He has thus far put up a line of .237/.409/.439, with a wRC+ of 143 and 1.1 fWAR. Now he will have to isolate for at least 10 days, per league protocols, and attempt to convalesce.

For Thomas, this will be his second stint with the team after a two-game cup of coffee last month. At Triple-A this year, he is slashing .260/.376/.429, good enough for a wRC+ of 103.

Should have been done at least two days ago when he was first pulled as a late scratch. Did it with Kikuchi, why not Fraley?

He must isolate for ten days, regardless. The difference between Fraly and Kikuchi is that Kukuchi never tested positve, as did Fraley.

If Jerry was taking the two weeks out of the break to decide if an addition or two made sense, this might impact the thought process. The next ten days should have been spent evaluating a lineup that includes Fraley or a player of his caliber. Hate to see who else might get caught up in the situation and if it takes the shine off the season heading into the deadline.

Still like to see a sensible addition or two; a steady SP, a quality RH bat (reunion with Cruz!)

Kids today have no idea what a slick guitarist he was with Wicked Lester.

      I’m 34… and I don’t understand the reference. I’m I still too much of a kid?

It was a poor joke. Ace Frehley was the guitarist for Wicked Lester, who eventually became known as an awful band named Kiss.

Actually Ace was never member…it Was Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley’s first band. Ace joined them when forming Kiss

I know hindsight is 20-20 but why did Seattle not sign Walker back? I thought that was the plan all along. We would not be looking for help at SP or maybe not a top line guy. Paxton was a good sign would have rather had Skywalker. Both would have been better. Will be real interesting what they do. Let’s get that Sodo Mojo back

Jerry couldn’t get the green light for a second or third year. Same issue with Wong.

      Thank Kevin Mather for that.

Imagine where we’d stand with both Walker and Wong at this point. As much as I like and root for Dylan and want him to succeed, Wong would’ve made a HUGE difference.

It’s unbelievable the guy wouldn’t get vaccinated in the middle of a pandemic .. trade him to Texas

Texas Rangers are 85% vaccinated and I think the Mariners are significantly below that. Not sure about the Astros. Have read our Minor League teams have a high vaccination rate. Maybe we just need to send him to AA
