Braves Reinstate Huascar Ynoa From Injured List

By Anthony Franco | August 17, 2021 at 10:24am CDT

The Braves announced this morning they’ve activated Huascar Ynoa from the 60-day injured list. He’ll start this evening’s game against the Marlins. Reliever Jacob Webb was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett last night to create an active roster spot. Atlanta already had a vacancy on the 40-man roster to accommodate Ynoa’s reinstatement.

Ynoa struggled over his limited big league time between 2019-20, but he looked to be amidst a breakout campaign earlier this season. Over nine appearances (eight starts), Ynoa tossed 44 2/3 innings of 3.02 ERA ball. The right-hander backed that up with a strong 27.9% strikeout rate, a lofty 13.3% swinging strike rate and a lower than average 6.1% walk percentage. The 23-year-old benefitted from an elevated strand rate and a low opponents’ batting average on balls in play — meaning he wasn’t likely to sustain an ERA at or below 3.00 — but he looked like a good bet for continued mid-rotation production.

However, Ynoa was tagged for five runs over 4 1/3 innings against the Brewers on May 16, his second-worst outing of the season. He punched the dugout in frustration after coming out of that game and fractured his throwing hand. That wound up requiring a three-month stay on the injured list.

It’s surely a decision Ynoa wishes he could have back, but he’s making his return at an opportune time. The Braves have been on a tear of late, winning eleven of fourteen this month. After hovering at or just below .500 for the entire season, Atlanta’s gone on their best run of the year to jump to the top of the National League East at 63-56. The Braves lead the Phillies by a game and a half and hold a three and a half game advantage over the Mets.

Yep. Where is that Mets22 guy who’s always ranting about how the Mets are by far the best team in the NL East even though they are “the most injured team in the league?” The Braves lost Ynoa, Acuna, Ozuna, Soroka, d’Arnaud and Anderson. Outside of maybe deGrom those are way more impactful players than the Mets have lost. The Mets don’t even have anyone the caliber of Acuna on their team to lose in the first place so I don’t know why he thinks Mets injuries are so much more important than the Braves. Oh, yeah. The Braves lost all that and still managed to knock those lousy Mets down to 3rd place where they belong.

You’re right. Degrom > Soroka, Acuna, Anderson, D’Arnaud, Ozuna.

          Clearly.

That’s insanity… Degrom = Acuna, reason being we have never seen Acuna pitch

Nah I’m a Braves fan but DeGrom is more valuable than Acuna imo.

Obviously long term I wouldn’t trade Acuna for deGrom but for a single season the Mets lost more this year when deGrom went down than Atlanta did with Acuna.

          Just being real about it.

As for the other injuries obviously Atlanta has had to deal with more

Carrasco and Soroka are basically equal losses.

After that it all tilts toward Atlanta having to overcome more injuries. Ynoa wasn’t much of a loss tbh.. and Anderson has only been out a month. The bigger losses were Ozuna and D’Arnaud. This offense has taken a huge step back compared to last years team and those losses were a big reason for it.

And the Mets didn’t win when deGrom was on the mound anyway. It didn’t matter how great he pitched.

Not understanding why people think Ynoa is better than Muller. Muller had the one bad game, but he’s largely faced much better opponents than Ynoa.

I’m not sold on using Ynoa over Muller but I hope it works out tonight. Not interested in this decision killing momentum.

Spot on Ducky, but you need to lasso the emotions & redirect them to dealing with that object at the plate not the dug out walls. To quote Mitch Ryder, “It Ain’t Easy”. Great song, listen to it.

          I hear what you’re saying (posting), @Curly.

But I don’t care to toss bowling balls around my glass domicile. I have no problem picturing myself doing something similar when I was in my 20’s.
          So.

I have anger issues today, but alas, I turn then in a different direction. I had issues in my 20’s, & did stupid things. Ynoa needs to realize there are millions at risk, time to turn that bowling ball away from the glass domicile.

17 years ago I became a single parent.
Changed my attitude quite a bit. I had a penchant for being a bouncer’s nightmare – for example – prior to that.

& since I started getting the dog out for some hunting a couple hundred times/year I honestly can’t recall the last time I really got good & pissed.

But punch a wall because I let my teammates & myself down when I was a kid? Yeah, I get it. Sadly enough.

People mock him for getting put on the 60-day for punching a wall, but what no one talks about is the 4 inch dent left in the wall of the dugout from his Herculean strength.

When announcers state how many “punch outs” Ynoa has, they are referring to strike outs, right?

Curly, I respect you a ton, but the DH is a good. Just injury wise, we have lost pitchers this year to hitting injuries. It’s time to protect the players with the DH in both leagues.

Respect back at you tstats ,but I love watching a good pitcher who can hit. Their value goes up 10 fold. Fried, Ynoa, Greinke, & so many other pitchers who can excite me BECAUSE they can hit. Look at all the batters who have been hurt this year, Trea Turner, Harper, Pillar (that was the worst I’d ever seen). It happens to anyone at the plate. Nolan Ryan, Steve Carlton all the greats that have endured without career injuries at the plate. Keep the DH in the AL, but please don’t ruin the NL.
PS even Charlie Morton has been good at the plate this year!

Doesn’t Rodriquez have just 2 pitches? But he doesn’t throw them at 95-100 mph. He “pitches” them at 90-92. Watch the new great pitcher, he’ll pitch at 92 & fool many hitters. Think about it, all pitchers throw 95-100 mph. Someone comes in & pitches 90-93 mph, success!

As all the realtors say, “Location, Location, Location”. Speed changes are coming, injuries will go down. Throwing will once again become pitching.

He is an example of someone who should be required to forfeit part of their salary for intentionally getting a non playing injury. The worse example was the SF Giants paying Baumgartner for riding his dirt bike on his ranch in violation of his contract.; Do stupid things, get punished!
