Yankees Nearly Traded Luke Voit Before Deadline

By Darragh McDonald | August 5, 2021 at 10:02pm CDT

The Yankees came very close to trading Luke Voit before last week’s trade deadline, Andy Martino of SNY reports. The Yankees discussed three potential deals involving Voit, per the report, one of which fell apart just before the deadline when the trade partner in question backed out of the swap.

With no trade coming together, Voit’s role on the Yankees has rather surprisingly become unclear. Despite the fact that the 30-year-old slugger paced the Majors with 22 home runs last summer and has generally been a well above-average hitter from the moment he arrived on the scene in the Bronx, the 2021 campaign has been something of a nightmare. Voit has endured three IL stints thanks to a torn meniscus, a strained oblique and a bone bruise in his knee, and he’s managed a tepid .241/.328/.370 output in 122 plate appearances when healthy.

Voit’s offense looked to be coming around in the weeks between his two most recent IL stints. From June 22 through July 11, he tallied 72 plate appearances and turned in a .281/.361/.453 batting line with two homers, three doubles and a triple. However, the Yankees acquired Anthony Rizzo at the trade deadline and already have a crowded designated hitter scene now that Joey Gallo has been added to an outfield mix that also includes Aaron Judge, Brett Gardner and Giancarlo Stanton. Per Martino, the team has at least discussed the possibility of optioning Voit to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre — a notion that not long ago would’ve seemed unthinkable.

With Rizzo now entrenched at first base and Giancarlo Stanton slotting in as the designated hitter most nights, there’s suddenly no room for Voit in the lineup. The Yankees are also currently employing a short bench of just three players, making positional flexibility more important than usual. Voit’s only time away from first base was a single inning in right field in 2018.

Rizzo is a free agent at year’s end, which could potentially open the door for Voit to retake his position at first base and in the lineup next year — assuming the team doesn’t again explore the market for Voit this winter. Voit, after all, would figure to have plenty of value to other clubs this offseason if the Yankees ultimately move in another direction. He’s due a raise on this year’s $4.7MM salary, but his injuries and the ensuing lack of counting stats will suppress the total of that raise. Voit is also controlled through the 2024 season, so an interested club could look to buy low in hopes of securing a longer-term option at first base.

In the short term, Voit began a rehab assignment in Triple-A on Tuesday and work to get back into game shape after a month on the injured list. Whether he immediately returns to the Yankees after that remains to be seen.

Giancarlo Stanton is due to get injured again, which likely would open the DH spot for Voit, provided he can also remain healthy.

Trading Voit would be a mistake. When healthy he is one of the most dangerous RH Bats in the league. Look at his minor league numbers this year. He is a Monster. Just let him play.

Stanton can play the OF. Voit can DH. They can rotate. If the Dodgers stacked lineup can get Pujols into it at times there is no excuse the Yanks can’t do the same for Voit.

If Stanton plays LF, what happens to Gallo? Not an everyday CF, though he can play there occasionally.

No regular playing time for Voit, as the article states. Which is why they were trying to trade him in the first place.

You realize Rizzo is left handed and only played 2nd base because Maddon had a weird bunt defense he liked to use? Notice he has played 13 games at the position but only 5 innings. This has to be a troll comment.

You mean the 8 games in AAA and the 5 games in AA minor league numbers?

If Stanton didn’t exist, I’d say keep Voit and move him to DH.

But expecting Voit to stay healthy while playing the field is a bit of a risk, and the dude is already 30.

I don’t blame the Yanks for trying to trade him, his value probably won’t go any higher than it is right now.

Agreed, the time to trade him was during the offseason after his monster 2020 season. But I’m guessing they didn’t want to sign an established 1B to replace him because of their desire to remain under the luxury tax threshold.

Baseball is about entertainment. The fans in NY really seem to like Rizzo and i’m pretty sure they have the money to resign him. Simply trade Voit – they got a lot of value out of him, so they can trade him without getting max value in return. For the remainder of this year, consider him a bench player when he’s healthy

If Schwarber returns and picks up where he left off, and proves he can handle 1B, I can see the Yanks signing him in the offseason. I think both Schwarber and Rizzo will wind up either in Boston or New York.

Yes, he was struggling but it was just 100 ABs.. I think giving up on him now would be a long-term mistake. Even this year, I’d be surprised if Rizzo or Stanton can go 2 months without getting hurt and he is still needed.

As a Cubs fan, Rizzo has had a lot of back issues he has tried to power through. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if this is a recurring problem for the rest of his career.

I just think the notion of dumping a guy based off 100 ABs is silly especially on a team that can’t stay healthy and has a whole list of guys with injury issues.

They’re better off. Keep the depth. Keep options open for next year. In the near term, Stanton to the OF for three of four games a week, DH Voit. More offense. Judge or Gallo can handle CF in those games. Don’t resist the obvious.

they should keep voit you can never have to much depth and he is young with options which that itself is valuable. also maybe a lil aaa time wouldn’t be bad for him especially coming off an injury, he can work on his swing and hopefully can regain some of his confidence

In 3 weeks rosters expand by 2 players. Start Voit 4 games a week and see if his bat turns around. Rizzo one off day per week. Stanton one off day per week. Stanton in OF 2 games per week.

The Red Sox have their future 1B in Tristan Casas. As much as I would have loved to see Boston acquire Rizzo at this year’s deadline, it doesn’t make sense to commit 3-4 years to him when Casas is right around the corner.

Boston needs to lock up Devers, try to renegotiate Xander’s contract (2023 opt out) and then focus on adding pitching and maybe an OF.

I don’t think the Red Sox want Rizzo. For all of Dalbec’s offensive struggles he is a vacuum at First Base. And Casas is a year maybe two at most away. I just don’t think Yankee fans should think they are getting Rizzo on the cheap either. He is the number two First Baseman available if the Braves Freddie Freeman actually makes it to free agency and he already gave the Cubs all the discounts it sounds like he planned to give.

What is this love affair with Buxton? All I hear is the word raw talent and being a 5-tool player…someone please tell me why do we want ANOTHER playe who goes on the IL when crossing the foul line….. Excluding 2020….in ’18, ’19, and current year of ’21..he has missed close to 300 games out of a possible 430 games !!!!!!!

I have seen him play out here.
He is a fantastically talented kid. MVP caliber ability. Straight up & down.

Unfortunately – as you highlighted – he just can’t seem to stay on the field. & the Yanks have plenty of guys like that.

One more reason to hold Voit. The Universal DH is likely coming in 2022. His trade market will increase significantly.

Yanks have very little money coming off the books and Texas isn’t paying for Gallo next year. The Yankees have over $153 million in guaranteed salary already next season and that doesn’t count big arbitration raises for Judge, Sanchez, Gallo, and Torres. It’s unlikely the Yankees will keep Rizzo unless he takes a nice discount or they are able to unload a bad contract

No don’t think Rizzo is going anywhere…no second guessing from the BoSox…..he’s not coming back…get used to it!
The Yankees haven’t had slick fielding at first like Rizzo is providing since Tex., and don’t think his offense, left-handed bat, and experience isn’t going un-noticed….the Yankees will find a way……

I think NY will spend big the next 2 years because they paid “extra” for the CBT reset this year. If Rizzo can fit into that plan then I definitely see him staying. Just like the Dodgers are doing now, spend big after the reset and then prioritize another reset in 3 years. Assuming the CBT structure remains, this will continue to be the model for the large revenue teams.

Who needs defense?! Start Stanton in left until he gets hurt again and then there’s room for everyone. Just don’t play Gardy anymore. If he’s a “clubhouse guy,” then let him be just that, just don’t put him in the lineup!

    LeMahieu 2B
    Rizzo 1B
    Judge CF/RF
    Gallo RF/CF
    Stanton LF
    Voit DH
    Sanchez/(Higashioka after covid test)
    Torres SS
    Odor 3B

Give us all the homers and strikeouts!

He might not be an everyday centerfielder but he can spot start in center just fine.

As a fan I like all 3 of Voit, Frazier and Andujar but since none of them play SS or CF they are simply roster depth pieces for the rest of the year. Have no problem with any of them finishing the season in AAA.

Rizzo is so smooth to watch at first base. He improves the team just by his defense. Trade Voit and resign Rizzo….if you can get him on a contract which is not more than 2-3 years. If he wants anything longer, let him walk.

Gallo is a stud. Between his fielding, base running, and hitting, the guy is a heck of a player.

If anybody has been following the Yankees the last few years, whoever is healthy, there will be at bats for them soon enough. Having a guy like Voit ready for when the next injury happens just makes sense.

I’d definitely unload Stanton and cover most his salary if any team willing to pay him. Hopefully the NL will have DH and possibly SF want him. I was surprised the Angels didn’t want Voit for Heaney. I’d make Voit DH and bring back Rizzo after unloading Stanton. I do however think Rizzo doesn’t want to stay in NY especially after many reports said he was possibly going back to Boston

Rizzo mentioned the Cubs did not want to pay for his prior accomplishments when he was traded. He had signed a contract extension years ago that bought out a few free agent years. This is why he’s going to be a 30+ year old first time free agent. He’s in for a rude awakening this off-season.

Almost none of the yankee players have value to other teams. No one wants the Cole or Stanton contracts. The rest of the team? Who has any value? Some of their younger bullpen arm options would be coveted but that might be about it. Maybe DJLM or Urshela or Judge but even those guys aren’t no-brainer pickups. And even Rizzo and Gallo were somewhat given away with salaries paid so the yankees would take them. It’s not a bad thing, they might even win the division. But nobody wanted Voit, and that shouldn’t be a surprise. The yankees are going to live and die with what they got. And there will be more injuries. Count on it.

DJLM and Ursh definitely have value. You’re correct about Stanton though, nobody is trading for that contract. Voit, Sanchez Andujar, and Frazier would all be distressed assets that teams aren’t going to pay a premium for knowing the Yankees don’t even have them starting. The Yanks are better off holding onto them.

The two interesting trade chips they have are Judge and Torres. It might sound like sacrilege to Yankees fans but selling high on Judge right before he gets to free agency would be a good way to recoup value, dip below the tax, and free up time for the other outfielders. If they want to restock their system while still being competitive that would be the way. They’re not going to get anything substantial for the guys they have on the fringe of the roster.

They’re not going to trade Judge, and they will be under the tax even if they keep everyone.

Torres, who knows, there are so many good FA options to replace him with.

The Yankees dipped below the CBT this season so they will spend to their heart’s content next year. After watching what the Dodgers did, the Yankees will want to keep pace with them. They just can’t afford another long term, expensive deal. I’d expect some shorter term deals at high AAV numbers.

I like the idea of Voit at DH. If he can finish the year with good stats it will increase his trade value in the off season. Try to resign Rizzo. If you can’t resign him you have Voit as insurance at 1st base. Sign Rodon and Seager. If Rizzo resigns. Trade Voit and Gleyber to restock the farm.
