The Red Sox have added Taylor Motter to the active roster, optioning Connor Wong to Triple-A, per the team. Motter was only recently claimed off waivers from the Rockies.
Motter played in 13 games with the Rockies, slashing .150/.227/.150 in 22 plate appearances. The 31-year-old utility man can play all over the diamond, which will be particularly helpful for a Boston team with nine players on the COVID-related injured list. In his career, Motter has bounced around, suiting up for the Rays, Mariners, Twins, and Rockies, as well as a short stint in the KBO.
Wong, 25, has appeared in just six games, but he’s had success in the early going. Wong has four hits in 14 plate appearances, including a double, triple, and a walk. He has also struck out seven times, however.

Great move to have a guy who isn’t good at lots of positions over a guy that isn’t good at just one!! Maybe going forward the team the Red Sox play will bring up AAA pitchers and he’ll be successful!!
It’s hard to believe that this move was worth writing about. I guess all transactions matter no matter how insignificant!!

It’s literally a transaction website. Do you also complain when Zillow shows houses for sale?

Yeah, I didn’t understand why so many people found the Motter signing a ‘great move’ for Boston. Sure he has great AAA numbers this year, but I believe he played in the PCL and he’s 31 years old too; he should be expected to tear it up in a hitter-friendly AAA league. The problem is that he’s been called up to the majors in 4 different seasons and has yet to make an impact in any of them. At this point in time, Boston needs healthy bodies and it appears they don’t think Downs is ready to face major league pitching so I guess it makes sense to give Motter a chance if the front office believes he was the best available option for them. I just don’t want Boston to open up a ‘real’ 40-man roster spot for Motter at the expense of a younger, more promising prospect. Thankfully, MLB allows teams to temporarily remove Covid infected players from the 40-man so Boston can add Motter without losing or having to DFA a true prospect. Unless Motter goes on a heater in the majors, I see him being released once the Sox start getting their starters back from the Covid list. But let’s hope Motter is finally able to bring some offense to the major leagues with him. It would certainly be welcomed by us Boston fans.

“so many people found the Motter signing a ‘great move’.” Who said that? –The word “great” was never used in either of Motter’s two MLBTR posts, expect by you.
He’s a 31 year old journeyman. Here to fill in as a stopgap. No one is saying its a “great move”.

You’re usually a lot better than this. I read the posts from a previous Motter thread. Most people look at this as a necessary evil to replace guys on Covid. This might not be anything more than Bloom looking at one matchup he likes, or one opportunity to PH for Lopez and have someone fill in.
Dorothy_Mantooth
Sorry should have said “smart move” not great move. People on the last thread were lauding his AAA production but that means next to nothing when players get called up. Don’t get me wrong, I want Motter to succeed as I’m a huge Sox fan; I just hope at age 31 he doesn’t take a 40 man roster spot away from a better prospect, unless of course he earns it while playing in the bigs for Boston. Maybe he’ll turn into the next Yaz…one can only hope!

He scored the wining run. This is what the addition might be all about. Having another SS on the team means that the RS can pinchhit for Lopez, then use Motter as the pinchrunner, and then keep Motter at SS,
The fact that it worked exactly as planned is pure dumb luck.
The fact that we were in a position to steal a game from Cleveland, is not.

KD-What happened to the 500-word rants? It feels like you’re mailing it in.

I’m pretty sure Taylor Motter and Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins are the same dude.

In other news, the Red Sox just signed Nandi Bushell.

Time will tell if this move was right or Wong
JoeBrady
Or, it might not even Motter.

Taylor made comments.
…I’ll be taking the back exit now.

As Francis Albert once sang, “Anymore it doesn’t Motter
Who’s Wright or who’s Wong”……

This guy could be the next Phil Gosselin.
