Yankees Attempted To Acquire Andrelton Simmons At Trade Deadline

By TC Zencka | October 9, 2021 at 11:11am CDT

Upon first glance, it would be natural to expect the Yankees to be active in exploring this winter’s deep class of free agent shortstops. Once they bit the bullet and officially moved Gleyber Torres off shortstop, their need at the position became explicit. Prospects Anthony Volpe and Oswald Peraza have impressed enough, however, that the Yanks could choose a short-term bridge option as they await further development for their youngsters, suggests Andy Martino of SNY.tv.

Andrelton Simmons might fit the bill as a short-term option. The Yankees tried to acquire Simmons at the trade deadline, Martino notes, and they could be again as a fill-in with defensive upside that might complement Torres’ skill-set up the middle. Yankee fans might dream a little bigger, considering Simmons’ .223/.283/.274 line across 451 plate appearances with the Twins.

Martino also suggests Marcus Semien as a potential short-term option, given his now-proven ability to play second base, should they want to make room for Volpe or Peraza when they’re ready. There figures to be quite a bit more competition for Semien’s services after another MVP-caliber year. The Yankees, of course, have the means to compete with anyone, and they are one of a choice few teams with a clear need at shortstop.

In terms of their potential competition, the Tigers could upgrade shortstop, making Niko Goodrum a super-utility player as they look to turn the page on their rebuild. The Nationals can do the same with Alcides Escobar, and they have some money to spend should they want to an immediate replacement for Trea Turner. The Orioles don’t have a clear long-term solution at short, but they might not be ready to spend significantly in free agency.

There are plenty of other teams that could keep a star shortstop from simply falling in the Yankees’ lap. The Blue Jays will need to replace Semien if they don’t bring him back. The Angels and A’s could both stand to upgrade. Thinking outside the box a little, the Phillies could push for a shortstop, given Didi Gregorius’ down year and their clear desire to compete. There might even be more teams looking for a short-term option like Simmons than there are clubs with surefire intentions to pursue the Correa/Seager/Story/Baez/Semien/Taylor class of free agent. Regardless, the Yankees figure to be players somewhere in the market this winter.

Half the people believe heavily investing in analytics is how you can win without spending too much on team payroll.

The other half believe spending big on team payroll is how you can win.

Since the Yankees are the only team in the league to do both, how come no World Series since 2009?

Maybe someday they’ll realize winning championships is all about succeeding in the biggest moments in the biggest of games.

Also, maybe the team gets a little too overconfident and caught up in theatrics, and a little light in staying focused and preparations?

According to articles, they spent time on theatrics, Judge setting up his boom box, bringing personalities to fenway for the wildcard game…

Trying to set up the trolling got more effort than being ready to win, and it showed.

Who are the shortstops who will be available a year from now outside possibly Dansby Swanson? The Braves could offer Swanson a QO after next year and he could just take it. Part of me wonders if they should get a top tier shortstop this off-season and let Swanson go after next year. I like Swanson but he seems streaky and if you are going to spend a bunch of money on the position it might be smarter to strike a year early if it means you can get a great one like Correa or someone. I doubt the Braves would spend that kind of long term money though.

Yes, the Yankee haters are out in force today….to corner the Yankees as one of a small group who invests in analytics just goes to show that these commenters usually watch table tennis for relaxation and know nothing about MLB in 2021.

They should get rid of all of their players and just seek players who are going to perform in “big” moments. That’s how to build a winner!

The Dodgers have been doing both far longer than the Yankees. They brought Friedman over from the Rays and followed that with massive spending. They have proven it works for reaching the playoffs year after year. But they only have the one championship in a shortened season to show for it.

Every team uses analytics to some extent, nobody here has said otherwise therefore not sure why you jumped to that erroneous conclusion?

However only the Yankees have a department of 20 analysts, 33% larger than the next-largest departments within the Astros and Rays.

Even Mr. Moneyball himself, Billy Beane, utilizes just a fraction of analysts (3) that the Yankees use.

Did you watch the AL Wildcard Game? If so you’d have heard ARod slamming the Yankees for getting so absorbed with analytics. He flat-out said it’s a mistake for big market teams to try and replicate Tampa’s use of analytics. He said their analytics departments aren’t nearly as good as Tampa’s, and the big market teams should stick with their best method of fielding a winning team … by spending big money.

I think he’s right. Using analytics is like day trading, very few are successful at it and just because they are it doesn’t mean everybody else can be too.

Yankee Clipper-DeJong is a good defender and he has a lot of power. This year, he had a down year. That’s why Sosa got more playing time almost at the end of the second half of the season and also because DeJong was injured a couple of times.

DeJong should rebound. He had a career low babip despite his hard hit% staying at his normal rate. Although, I don’t think the Yankees are going to bite on that when with Correa and Seager both on the table. Phillies, Reds, or even the Blue Jays could be interested if they don’t wanna pay for the big dogs.

DeJong is actually the guy I think I prefer at this point, @Clip.

Looks like he is an excellent defender. Offensively should hover around league average & hit 20+ jacks. If one believes in either Volpe or Peraza it makes sense to avoid the top of this free agent class.

A Cards guy brought this up on a different thread, postulating a DeJong for Abreu or King trade. Checks out on Baseball Trade Values too.

He would give us the best SS play we have had in a long time. Signed this year & next at a $4MM AAV. Checks all my boxes & leaves about 20 mil to address other needs (CF? 1B? C?).

        He is my choice.
& Simmons is a pretty odd duck. Still a great glove (although not near his heyday as a Platinum Glover) but his bat is untenable.

Agree on DeJong Ducky. I also wouldn’t mind a deal for Cronenworth from SD. Maybe take Hosmer on the deal to lower the acquisition cost.
Definitely not interested in the long term deals that it will take on the big name FAs. Yankees have enough of those especially with a Judge extension looming.

As a Cards fan, DeJong has my endorsement. Very good leather and a bat that can get hot and carry you for a couple of series. I think Sosa has earned the job in St Louis, and the price is right for us, but I would love to see DeJong land in pinstripes.

I’m not overly familiar with Cronenworth, @Joe.

But Hosmer has essentially the same AAV as Stanton. Who has carried us down the stretch twice (’18 & ’21). & the playoffs in ’20. Yet he is *still* one of the players this fan base “hates” the most.

I cannot imagine the consternation Hosmer would elicit from Yankee fans. Epic.

Ducky Cronenworth is a lefty bat, doesn’t strike out a lot and plays SS. Slash line of 266/340/460. He also had a 4.9 WAR. He plays 2B for SD because of Tatis.
This is a trade I saw suggested recently (Joel Sherman or Jon Heyman Ithink). Since he’s got quite a bit of control left (even though he’s already 27), I expect it would take adding on a bad contract to get SD to move him.

Francys01 – Thank you, that explains his ‘21 stats. I like hearing from those who see these guys day-in and day-out because single year stats are only part of the tale. Although I saw his ‘17 (I think) was phenomenal.

Two great suggestions Joe & Ducky. League average bat with 20+ homers and great D? Sign me up. Cronenworth’s bat seems a bit more potent this year and the fact that he’s a lefty will help. Nonetheless, if they are looking for a stop-gap, hopefully it’ll be a player of this ilk, not Freddy Galvis or Simmons.

I saw a PSA(?) article suggesting Manny Pina or Yan Gomes for our catching solution – I’m not feeling that, except Pina has really good defense and was about league average batting this year, I believe.

In a vacuum I have Cronenworth > DeJong.

But attaching Hosmer would be a no-go for me. He is a slow, LH, groundball hitter. Teams would over-shift him & I fear he would run an OPS ~ .600. The short porch actually impedes a hitter like him.

Gomes is OK. I don’t see him as an upgrade to Gary though.

Was it by @Peter Brody? He’s the only one I read over there anymore. Keeps it on baseball & we kind of have the same “steady as she goes” attitude towards the Yanks. & the man has some good waterfowl & pheasant recipes. Which is Big.

Also: I have Fury > Wilder tonight.

Hey Ducky, no, I believe article was by Rivera. It was a pretty good read though. I agree, I don’t want a Sanchez equivalent or Sanchez light to replace Sanchez.

I was thinking this evening about the potential landing places for SS. The Giants are going to be in on them too. Something I have not seen suggested as a stopgap for the Yankees is Brandon Crawford on a very short-term deal. He wouldn’t be a bad stopgap – although he’s 35, he has good D, switch hitter, and posted a 895 OPS with a 141 OPS+.

I’m in the Fury > Wilder as well.

I’m not sure there was an available SS they weren’t in on at the trade deadline. At least he would’ve provided better defense at the position, but wouldn’t have made a dent in their offensively anemic season.

Please don’t sign him this offseason! Go after a top SS or use Peraza- It’s amazing, the Rays just bring the kids up when they do well and have had a ton of success. Yankees leave them down and sign the budgetary Andrelton Simmons.

It’s funny to see Yankees fans, who have always been known for bragging about 27 World Series titles, wanting to emulate the Rays building model and their 0 World Series titles just because the Rays have had 3 good years in a row.

The reason the Rays have their model is because they don’t want to (or can’t) spend money. That has never been a problem with the Yankees.

The Rays model works for short periods of time, but it is inevitable that it will fail eventually. As long as they can trade guys after 3-5 years for more prospects it can work. But all it takes is ONE group of top prospects failing to produce and the well goes dry and the Rays are massively rebuilding for another 5-10 years. It is inevitable.

Hiflew check out how many total wins the rays have since 2008 and check out how many teams have more than them. Over a decade of consistency in by far and it’s not debatable the toughest division! They ain’t going anywhere unless they’re forced to spend money and you’ll see a downfall in their organization.

What fan wouldn’t want their team to emulate the Rays success at drafting, development and roster utilization? I don’t think there a single Yankee fan that wants them to operate on a $50-$70 million budget.

Hiflew- my point is that they’re trying to play both sides. They’re aren’t spending money like they used to, and they aren’t developing talent and using it like the Rays. They are trying to follow the Rays general model of acquiring analytical friendly projects and having them outperform, in order to save money.

It’s not working. And PSA just wrote a decent article about how a Yankees analytical staffer inferred the Yankees are trying to follow other teams’ successful analytical models. Yankees should be the leaders in the industry – the innovators – not followers on a self-imposed budget.

Baseball hasn’t changed. Reliance on analytics while trying to outsmart foundational roster construction has been failing this team. They should’ve learned this season that injecting speed, sound defense, and contact have a place. Then use analytics to support that. Not the other way around. Gallo’s peripheral numbers may be tremendous because of his power – but his strikeouts come with the game on the line, and it’s useless.

Nah the Rays model of never getting attached to players will keep them in the playoff hunt year after year. They don’t need an entire class to work out. Just one or two players. They learned not to hold onto top pitchers with Moore and Cobb. Would any other team have traded Snell last December? They already have several young players teams would give up a haul of prospects for. They will miss the playoffs here and there but will be in the hunt more often than not.

The Yankees have not been particularly good at evaluating their own young players for the last 3 decades. Remember guys like Kevin Maas and Brien Taylor and Hensley Meulens were can’t miss prospects. Taylor never saw AAA, Maas was at best a AAAA player and Meulens had way more success in Japan than he ever did at the MLB level. This is the team that after Tony Fernandez broke his elbow in spring training in 1996 were going to send Derek Jeter to the minors because he was having a bad spring and was going to trade Mariano Rivera to the Mariners for Felix Fermin (think how drastically different the MLB landscape would be if those moves happend, its possible the Yankee dynasty doesn’t happen)

By the way, what was up with those mid-season trades Cashman made? Gallo, Heaney, even Schwarber played better than Rizzo and costed less. Lots of minor leaguers were traded, just to make a one-game playoff. Hope it was worth it.

He’s got to go back 100 years because that’s the beginning of the Yankees team, their organizational success, their pure domination of the sport of baseball and their litany of legendary players.

RSox fans are cocky right now because they’ve beaten the Yankees for 15 years – except 2009, our #27!!! – and we concede that. But they’ve NEVER had any run even close to the Yankees multiple dynasties. In fact, no team has even come close.

So, enjoy the chest beating now, for a year or two, while we reassess, recalibrate, re-engage, and develop another dynasty that’ll put us with 30+ rings.

RSox fans are so busy trolling Yankees fans that they’re missing the gigantic obstacle called Rays directly in front of them. If they lose, their one-game bragging rights are useless, especially since we just swept them clean right before.

And for all the Cole comments, Sale did a bag-up job, fellas! Lol.

I probably still have some of his rookie cards. I was at the stadium when he hit a HR in the left CF bleachers. That’s a heck of a shot for a lefty. He had some split issues, but still a good hitter. That said, no, he was never ranked, and was a 22nd rounder.

Difference being that by the trade deadline Robles was owed the remainder of the $2 million the Twins signed him for while Simmons was owed the remainder of the $10.5 million he signed for. That’s a fairly substantial difference

Shortstop is one of a few spots the Yankees figure to be active in pursuit of upgrades from this past season.

    Expensive Upgrades

Cory Seager – A Very good offensive player. Left handed and good in the clutch as well as being a good well rounded hitter not just a swing and miss guy. Could be moved to third when one of their prospects is ready. Below average defensively and figures to be very expensive. Has a history of injuries.
Carlos Correa – Younger and much better defensively than Seager, but right handed and a tad more of a swing and miss type. Probably will be the most expensive.
Marcus Semien – Coming off the best season of the entire cast. Perhaps a little more versatile but the oldest by far.
If I’m the Yankees I have no interest in Baez or Story unless I get a real bargain.

    Less expensive Upgrades
Jonathan Villar – I really like this guy. Could be an excellent lead off hitter. Can steal a base has some power and can play 3 positions. “Only” 30 and is a switch hitter. Shouldn’t be too expensive.
Freddy Galvis – Better defensively than Villar but not as fast and has less power. Also a switch hitter and a year older than Villar.

If you choose one of the cheaper options it gives you money and other resources to pursue a catcher, a first baseman, a center fielder, and a starting pitcher.

    What do you think?

Correa is injury prone his 148 games this year is the most since 2016. You can count on him missing stretches of the season. With the contract he is going to get, IMHO he is not worth it and will likely only average 120 games a year under the contract(that is the optimistic view). Semien hands down is the best middle infielder available. He plays everyday, elite defense at either SS or 2nd base, proven power ability, and club house leader. He may be older but he is a higher certainty than any of the top FA at the position. 5 years $130 million minimum. And in a dream scenario a Mariner.

Mickey7777- No Correa – I think it would cause internal problems outside of the fact that I don’t think he’s worth paying the money he will want.

Seager, depending on his asking price, is an elite bat and has average defense.

Semien- no way, not for SS. His defense is not good at short and he had his career year on offense. I think you will be paying for his last year at 2B, and never get that type of production again. I’d only be for Semien on a short (high AAV) deal incase his bat declines.

Villar is not a year-long SS anymore imho. But I like him a lot better than Freddy Galvis. I like the idea of a DeJong trade or maybe Cronenworth (but he will be expensive in the return personnel).

There are development issues that need to be considered. The jump from AAA to the majors is quite huge now, for whatever reason. more so than in recent seasons. Look at how many blue-chip prospects really struggled this year initially, including Jarred Kelenic. They’ll want to make sure he’s ready as he’s had all of maybe 30 ABs above AA. Rushing a prospect can set them back, or even permanently hinder their progress. Bringing in Simmons for a season could allow their two top SS prospects time to develop.

I really like the idea of signing Cory Seager for 5 years. And letting him play shortstop for the lst 3 years, then moving him over to lst base as he gets older. A nice lefty power bat that doesn’t strike out so much and is good defensively. It will definitely depend on the cost and years. If some other team offers him more than 5 years he should sign with them. The Yankees could sign Seager for 5 years with a club option for a 6th year.

Seager is the best fit IMO because he’s a lefty contact hitter. However why would he leave LA? I keep harping on this but Lindor was the guy for the Yankees. He’s a switch hitter with speed and could of been a legitimate lead off hitter. Lindor checks alot of boxes of what Yankees need and are lacking. If the Mets are truly unhappy with Lindor the Yankees should try again. One big contract for another Stanton for Lindor.

Well the Yankees have become the Cubs- “wait until next year”. With contracts that cant be moved and a window of contention closing it is ridiculous to suggest a “stop gap” or short term solution. The Yankees were a bad team and drafted Derek Jeter. He developed while they were a bad team and they were a playoff team the year he made his debut. How did it work out with Clint Frazier? How did Esteban Florial do this year at AAA (.223).? How did Andujar follow up that rookie season? The Yankees are not loaded with prospects and they have about as a poor a track record as you can have developing guys the last 5 years. The idea of a stop gap shortstop is incredibly stupid for a team in this position- if the Yankees do not find a viable solution at SS next year they wont even win the 2nd WC.

Look at the New New York Yankees. It used to be “world series or bust”. Now it is “we have a process, if that process does not work we are doubling down on it. If it doesnt work we are doubling down on it yet again”.

This team is just so stupid- remember Brian “Man of 1000 Mistresses” Cashman became obsessed with the Royals and for 5 straight years he kept signing high priced relief pitchers? How many championships did that yield?

You’re going to have those shootout games, even in the playoffs. Look at the game the Blue Jays and Phillies played in 1993.

But, looking at the Yankees performance over the past few years, their 3-true outcomes strategy is not getting it done. I’d rather guys on base putting pressure on the defense anf pitcher than a bunch of 3-true outcome players.

I want to see them back in the hunt but at the moment, none of the teams are scared of the Yankees.

The way the Yankees should play with their team is more balance approach instead of TTO hitters in every spot. They can outspend anyone in the league that is a fact but you don’t need to keep spending money on guys if they don’t build your farm system. You have a 6-7 year window with players when they join the majors but in that time span you should build your future each year. You can’t kee everyone. You either spend on guys on a 5 year maximum contract or trade those guys for more prospects to build your future. The rays blueprint and Oakland shows you don’t need to keep everyone you just build that farm system up and stay competitive. Pitching is the number key on baseball and it’s hard for any team to develop good pitching if your not name the rays, blue jays, braves.
