Rangers Sign Corey Seager

By Anthony Franco | December 1, 2021 at 11:15am CDT

The Rangers’ huge offseason continues, as Texas has agreed to terms with free agent shortstop Corey Seager on a ten-year deal, the team announced today. According to various reports, it’s a massive $325MM guarantee for the Boras Corporation client. He’ll reportedly receive a $5MM signing bonus and a $32.5MM salary in 2022. Seager will make $35MM in 2023, $34.5MM in 2024 and $32MM in 2025 before settling in at $31MM annually from 2026-31 as part of the front-loaded pact. The deal also contains limited no-trade protection but does not feature any opt-out clauses.

It’s the Rangers’ second big-ticket free agent infield pickup of the offseason, as they also agreed to terms with Marcus Semien on a seven-year, $175MM deal. The Rangers announced Semien’s signing at the same press conference. Huge as the Rangers’ investment in Semien is, the Seager deal is on a whole other level. The $325MM guarantee will tie Giancarlo Stanton’s November 2014 extension for the sixth-highest sum in MLB history (and Stanton’s was distributed over a thirteen-year term). The $32.5MM average annual value checks in eleventh all-time.

It’s an incredible investment, although that’s a testament to Seager’s blend of productivity and youth. He’ll turn 28 years old next April, making him one of the younger options available in free agency. More importantly, Seager’s one of the game’s best players — a middle-of-the-order lineup presence capable of playing shortstop. A former first-round pick and top prospect, he’s more than lived up to lofty expectations.

Seager has been an above-average bat in every season of his career, and he’s been far better than most at the plate for the bulk of that time. By measure of wRC+, he’s been at least 27 percentage points above the league average in four of his five seasons with 200+ plate appearances. Seager has been especially productive over the past two years, combining for a .306/.381/.545 line over 641 regular season trips to the plate since the start of 2020. That’s the eighth-best offensive production leaguewide (minimum 500 plate appearances) and that’s before considering Seager’s huge showing in the 2020 postseason. He was perhaps the single greatest driver of the Dodgers’ World Series run that year, winning NLCS and World Series MVP honors after popping seven homers over 57 combined plate appearances between the two rounds.

Those great bottom line results are supported by Seager’s underlying metrics. He has never struck out at a higher-than-average rate in a season, and he rarely chases pitches outside the strike zone. Seager’s 11.7% walk rate in 2021 was the highest of his career, around three percentage points better than the league mark. The left-handed hitter pairs that plate discipline with high-end raw power, consistently rating well above-average in terms of average exit velocity, hard contact rate and barrel rate (essentially how often a hitter makes hard contact at the optimal angles for power).

Any player with Seager’s offensive acumen would be in high demand, but that kind of production is particularly impressive from a shortstop. Aside from a brief stint at third base in his 2015 rookie season, Seager has exclusively played the infield’s most demanding position. Advanced defensive metrics have been mixed on his work. Defensive Runs Saved has pegged him just a touch below-average in each of the past few seasons; Statcast’s Outs Above Average rated Seager fairly well in 2019 and 2020 but pegged him as a fair bit below par in 2021.

Those metrics seem to align with the general understanding of Seager’s defense. He’s a competent if unexceptional shortstop, unlikely to either win a Gold Glove nor immediately have to move off the position. His 6’4″, 215-pound frame has led to some speculation he might kick over to third base at some point down the line, but it’s likely the Rangers envision him as a franchise shortstop for at least the next few seasons. Even if Seager eventually has to assume a less demanding defensive role, he should be more than capable of living up to the higher offensive demands of positions further down the defensive spectrum.

While there’s not much to nitpick about Seager as a player, he has dealt with a couple of significant injuries over the past few seasons. He missed the bulk of the 2018 campaign recovering from a UCL sprain that required Tommy John surgery. This past season, he suffered a right hand fracture on a hit-by-pitch that cost him two months. Seager absolutely mashed at a .335/.417/.592 clip upon returning from that most recent issue, though, likely assuaging any fears on the part of teams about his current level of health.

Seager now becomes the centerpiece of an incredible offseason for the Rangers and their fanbase. Texas brass has hinted at the potential for an active winter for months, but it wasn’t until a few weeks ago it became clear ownership might sign off on an historic spending spree. Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reported earlier this month that the Rangers could add $100MM to their 2022 books alone, and between the recent deals for Seager, Semien, starter Jon Gray (four years, $56MM) and corner outfielder Kole Calhoun (one year, $5.2MM), they’ve added around $76.7MM to next year’s payroll within the past 36 hours alone.

That’s in part due to the wide open payroll outlook the Rangers carried into the winter. José Leclerc ($5.25MM) is the only other player with guaranteed money on the books for 2022; Seager, Semien and Gray are the club’s only long-term commitments. Active as they’ve been, it’s certainly possible the Rangers aren’t done yet. Texas currently has around $125MM in 2022 player expenditures, in the estimation of Jason Martinez of Roster Resource. (That assumes the Seager, Semien and Gray deals are paid out relatively evenly; specific contract terms on each have yet to be reported). For a franchise that spent around $160-165MM on players in both 2016 and 2017, there could still be more funds in reserve.

Regardless of what’s to come, the past two days have marked an incredible turnaround for a franchise coming off three last-place finishes in the past four years. That’s not to say the Rangers are certain to contend in 2022. The roster still has plenty of holes, particularly in the starting rotation. Still, installing Seager and Semien into the middle infield and Gray near the top of the rotation locks in some certainty at key areas of the roster.

At the very least, the 2022 Rangers should be far better than the 60-102 team they trotted out in 2021. And Semien, Seager and Gray will all be key pieces of a club that could legitimately contend in 2023 — particularly if top third base prospect Josh Jung hits the ground running as an above-average player alongside their star middle infield.

Until Jung’s arrival, Isiah Kiner-Falefa looks likely to kick back over to third base. The 26-year-old broke in as a third baseman but acclimated well upon a move up the defensive spectrum to shortstop this past season. While the Rangers likely didn’t see displacing Kiner-Falefa as a must, the opportunity to add two members of this offseason’s stacked shortstop class ultimately proved too tempting to pass up. Semien, meanwhile, looks likely to stay at second base, where he spent the 2021 season with the Blue Jays after a lengthy run as the A’s shortstop.

The Rangers already forfeited their second-highest 2022 draft choice and gave up $500K in international bonus pool space to sign Semien, who rejected a qualifying offer from Toronto. They’ll lose another pick to sign Seager, who declined a QO from the Dodgers. Signing multiple qualified free agents in the same offseason actually makes some amount of sense, though.

Under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement, teams that sign multiple qualified free agents pay a diminishing penalty. A team that already forfeited its second-highest pick on one qualified player (like the Rangers) lose their third-highest pick to sign another qualified free agent. That’s less costly than the second-highest pick other clubs in the Rangers’ revenue bucket would have had to forfeit to land Seager, a small benefit for teams concentrating their big free agent investments in the same offseason.

The primary appeal, though, is in simply adding a pair of star players to the 2022 roster. That’s the position in which the Rangers find themselves, while Seager’s former team finds itself in the opposite situation. The Dodgers have seen both Seager and Max Scherzer (who landed a record-setting three-year deal with the Mets) land elsewhere within the past few days. Los Angeles’ acquisition of Trea Turner from the Nationals at this past summer’s trade deadline gives them another All-Star caliber shortstop capable of stepping into Seager’s place.

Of course, the Dodgers aren’t likely to sit idly by for the rest of the offseason. Particularly as they battle with the Giants (and potentially Padres) in a loaded NL West, it’s likely Los Angeles will continue to explore ways to bolster a still-stacked roster. In the meantime, they’ll receive a compensatory pick after the fourth round in the 2022 draft for Seager’s departure as a team that exceeded the luxury tax threshold in 2021.

Seager’s signing is the latest in a transactions flurry getting in before the looming expiration of the current CBA on Wednesday night. Seager’s and Scherzer’s departures from L.A. could have a massive impact on the NL West race, while the Rangers’ run of big-ticket acquisitions and the Mariners’ agreement on a nine-figure deal with Robbie Ray will have reverberations in the AL West for years to come.

Finally, Seager’s deal becomes a key data point for the rest of the free agent shortstops remaining, particularly Carlos Correa. While Seager and Correa were the clear top two names in this winter’s class, Correa is generally expected to command a loftier deal based on his superior defense at shortstop. Seager’s guarantee, however, comes in above MLBTR’s ten-year, $305MM estimate entering the winter. In light of the robust market we’ve seen in recent weeks, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Correa also tops his ten-year, $320MM projection whenever he puts pen to paper. That’s particularly true in light of the Rangers signing two of the top five shortstops. The Yankees, Phillies, Mariners and Astros are among the other clubs who could still be motivated to land a long-term infielder.

Jeff Passan of ESPN first reported the Rangers and Seager were in agreement on a ten-year, $325MM guarantee. Jon Heyman of the MLB Network reported the limited no-trade protection and the $5MM signing bonus, as well as the absence of any form of opt-out clause. Levi Weaver of the Athletic was first with the specific contract breakdown.

I wonder how the Dodgers feel about this. They lost Corey Seager and Max Scherzer in the same day. It will be interesting to see if they lose Chris Taylor as well. Who can they sign to replace those guys? Correa, Story and Baez all want to play shortstop but Trea Turner has already been promised that position. They will probably either keep CT3 and make him an everyday 2nd baseman. Or get Story or Baez to agree to a pillow contract and play 2nd for one year. If they go with Baez they can QO him after next season is over.

The Rangers now have one of the best middle/left infields in the game. Kiner, Semien and Seager are all great players. It cost the Rangers over half a billion dollars to get that done. I’m thinking the Tigers lock up Correa pretty soon before the someone else picks him up.

The Dodgers knew this was happening, which is why they dealt for TT.

Dodgers were fully expecting this in my opinion. Even when they traded for Scherzer, I’m sure they thought most likely this is a rental with the opportunity to keep Trea Turner for at least an extra season and to fill in the gap when Seager leaves.. And I doubt the terminology is lost Scherzer and Taylor. If the Dodgers really wanted to they could have kept either Scherzer or Seager but that would hinder their ability to get other players to fill in roster spots. Free agency season pretty much playing out as I expected. Taylor was always the most likely to be kept between the three but I think at this point he’s likely gone too as the Dodgers don’t like to pay market value for too many players.

I think the dodgers are trying to reset the tax. They’re only 3 mil above it currently… without resigning anyone. Could be harsher penalties to come after the CBA

Baez is not taking a one year contract, he’s coming back to the Mets on a 5-6 year deal worth around 140.

At today’s prices, neither one of them are taking a pillow contract. They will each easily clear $100M.

They will definitely lose Chris Taylor, and very possibly Jansen. BUT… they have Trea Turner to play short, and Beuhler to lead the deepest starting staff in baseball. So don’t cry for the Dodgers– they’re fine. Cry for the Angels if they don’t at least come away with Stroman.

I want to know who was bidding the price up other than Boros. I’m not aware that the NYY were actually bidding on him. Never saw an article linking him to the Tigers. LA Dodgers seemed content with Turner already on board. Lot of Seattle rumors, but didn’t see his name tied to them. NYM love to have even their failures publicized. SO WHY DID THE RANGERS FEEL THEY HAD TO PAY HIM THIS MUCH FOR THIS LONG!? Seems they were bidding against themselves. If Correa thinks he should get more “because”, I would tell him he should have signed with the Rangers, then.

          @carllafong

They don’t have the deepest staff in the league anymore. Who do they have beyond Walker & Julio?

Kershaw, most likely getting a legacy contract, has a forearm strain. That’s not going to be magically healed because of the off-season. If he comes back, count on him being a frequent member of the IL.

Gonsolin was injured most of last year and wasn’t that effective when he returned. He started 13 games and barely averaged over 3 innings per start.

Price is not a regular starter anymore. The times he did start, he never made it to 5 innings. He couldn’t pitch in the post season due to an elbow injury. That does not bode well.

Dustin May is returning from TJS. He’ll be on an innings limit. Even if he makes it through the second half of the regular season, he’ll probable held back in the postseason.

Mitch White is currently a spot starter. Perhaps they make him a regular but right not he is a 5th starter at best.

The dodgers need, at least, one more starting pitcher. I just don’t know if whoever is available is a good fit for them.

Mets will not be signing a middle infielder this year. Cano will keep them from doing that for a bit. His contract is a huge anchor. The Mets need a big OF bat anyway. Schwarber would have been a good fit. They also need to spend some money on conditioning. Way too many injuries the last couple of years.

what a colossal overpay!!!!!!!! this contract is not going to age well. the guy has had exactly 2 good seasons when he had over 500AB’s. he’s injury prone and is not a good defensive SS. Semien is a far superior defensive SS but I’m sure that as part of this deal, Seager insisted he play SS.

Agreed. Corey’s HBP has nothing to do with injury-proneness, and his TJ surgery is well in the past. Correa’s recurrent bad back is much more concerning, especially in a shortstop of his height and weight.

Rangers always have the option to move Seager to 3B, 1B, DH towards end of the deal depending on structure.

If they were smart theyd front load the contract something like

          Age 27-32 around 36 to 38 mill a year

That would leave around 100 mill over the final seasons age 33-37

He’ll need to stay healthy and productive for the first few seasons and/or have a gradual decline. We’ll see, I guess. I wouldn’t bet on him being even or positive as far as value provided by the end of this.

And owners who pocket money left and right, see huge increases in team values, and refuse to show the books while crying poor.

Every time an owner sells he makes an INDECENT profit over the purchase price.

How can that be if they keep losing money and don’t make a profit even on these huge contracts?

Exactly. I’ve made this exact same argument on basketball forums over the owners always screaming about how much money they’re losing. If that was reality, then why exactly has the value of your franchise gone through the roof? Common sense. These owners are full of crap. Yes, players can act entitled at times, but the owners are worse.

Punted the last two seasons, saved bank in a top 5 market and now spending. Probably too early but sooner or later, Texas would have spent this $.

The fact is the Rangers really stunk last year. The Ms season was a mirage and the Angels pitching stunk.

Yanks fan, do you not understand how inflation works? With inflation, A-Rod was actually still paid more than Seager.

A-Rod signed in 2007 for $275m for 10yrs, but when you factor in inflation, which is equivalent to roughly $366mm today with an inflation rate of 2.08% (according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics).

Hope they land Castellanos. He’s basically the last impact bat in FA at a position of need. After that, trade for Segura, sign a mid-tier pitcher like Kikuchi, Wood or Grienke to help bolster the rotation and call it a day. That should be imminently doable for a contending team.

True, although they are already very good, winning their division, and with the promise of being even better next year with fully healthy seasons from Robert and Jiminez.

The Mets and Rangers are trying to spend their way into relevance and both still have a ways to go, particularly the Rangers. The Mariners spend on Ray, but even they had a “lucky” record in 2021.

So we’re seeing more of the wannabe teams spending right now. Not sure what to make of. that.

        Nothing wrong with that.

Maybe they get Schwarber for the OF/DH or more likely Conforto.

They can bring back Hernandez for
much cheaper than the option salary the Sox passed on.

Or they can play the youngsters Cola, Cespedes, and the 2B.

@Bright Side, I have little doubt they’ll win the ALC, but that’s not the goal of next year.

@lago407, Kimbrel for Segura has been tossed around as an idea. I could live with that, depending on what else is involved. Agree that they should sign a pitcher, but unfortunately, have to agree that it won’t be a top guy like Stroman. As for Castellanos, I don’t see it. JR’s just too cheap to shell out $20M. Conforto may be an option, but if he’s expecting both top dollar and a longer contract, I don’t want the Sox to go after him.

@iml12, in 2021, the tax took effect at $210M. The Sox, per Spotrac, are at $192.7 right now (after arb estimates and Graveman), so they still have some room. Plus, they could eat Kimbrel’s salary or take back a bad package just to save money. Also, I’d expect this $210M figure to go up a fair bit in the new CBA. Owners want to keep it low to have an artificial limit on spending, but the truth is they’ll just find other ways to keep salaries down, so it won’t matter and will be an important bargaining chip they have.

It’s all guessing at this point. The White Sox have a record payroll and are one semi decent signing away from being at or over the current luxury tax. Rodon accepts qualifying offer and they had very little wiggle room to upgrade 2nd or RF. If they didn’t care about payroll then Rodon qualifying offer was a no brainer, he either accepts or they get a draft pick. Rodons worse case scenario is signing a Thor type deal.

With their 102 loss team, they were top 3 in attendance. The new ballpark factor wears off really quickly unless you put a winning product on the field. A 20 win improvement for 2022 will keep the stands full, and maybe they can make another leap in the next off-season and become a serious contender. They do have prospects coming in addition to that Texas money

Semien will turn 34 in September of 2024. At 30, Seager will not be old by any reasonable baseball measure. Nor will Semien be old in his age-33 season. Adrian Beltre played productively for the Rangers until he was 39.

This has to move them toward trading middle infield depth for pitching.

I mean you can argue one of IKF or Jung is now blocked, and they have Foscue Smith and Duran all in the 2B/SS group that are in AA/AAA.

Idk what kind of pitching they can get but realistically Semien, Seager, IKF/Jung handle the infield. Garcia is locked in one OF spot. I imagine the Calhoun’s could play one corner. Huff/Hiem catching.

They’re 2 SPs and a COF away from being competitive.

IKF isn’t blocked. He’s a high quality utility infielder that can’t hit well enough for regular play. He shows no signs of suddenly becoming a .300 hitter or taking enough walks to make up for his lack of power.

You’ll like him a lot more as a utility guy who plays at the bottom 1/3 of your order.

Jung is probably your starting 3B.

Seager has the better bat in my opinion, especially when you factor in lefty bat. Turner better glove and definitely speed/base running. Turner completely disappeared this post season, probably one of the most disappointing story lines of this year’s Dodger post-season. Seager did not have a good post season this season but in 2020 I have not seen a player so hot for every round of the playoffs. He was just dialed in. When Seager is dialed in and laying off that low breaking stuff below the knees he is such a dangerous hitter. His defense is very average but not as bad as some make it out to be. At some point he’ll move to 3B, but by then his power numbers will also increase.

The Ranger’s have a 3B prospect (Josh Jung) who’s going to be 24 this year and as a much higher ceiling than IKF. Here’s what he did last year in the minors:

          2021 TEX AA 186PA .308/.366/.544
          2021 TEX AAA 156PA .348/.436/.652

IKF is going to be your utility infielder while this guy sorts it out. I would be shocked if Seager signed to move over to 3B immediately.

He’s a below average glove and not even an elite bat, but he’s being paid like he is. Good for him, very, very bad for the Rangers in about two years. Neither his contract or Semien’s are going to age well. Would be different if Texas was a legit contender, but they are a few years away.

Wonder how Angels fans are feeling right now watching two of their division rivals improve so much. I know the Rangers were way behind the Angels in the standings by seasons end, but still. Curious to see how bad the A’s look by the end of this offseason. If the big sell-off turns out to be smaller than expected, that entire division could be a nightmare for those teams.

Scherzer hurts, but Seager not so much. He’s been a great player for the team but in between injuries and defensive issues, it’s not the end of the world that he’s going. The writing was on the wall when they traded for Turner – now I’m excited to see him play SS. It took Seager leaving, but it had to be done.

Seager stunk in the playoffs this year and in prior years outside of 2020.

Also, he has had more than a “couple of injuries.” He has had major hip surgery and some back and hamstring issues, on top of the TJ surgery. A broken hand is a fluke injury. But he is not going to age very well.

Good luck to him. He is a good guy. But no way does he merit $325 million over 10 years.

Trea looked completely lost at the plate in the post-season. I was thinking to myself how he won the batting title. Part of it is that he legs out so many infield hits with his speed. He had to be the biggest disappointment this post-season. He’s a great player but I also wonder if the Dodgers will pass on him if the ask is too high. Dodgers need better cheap options. Too many players getting a lot more expensive real quickly.

So with Texas swallowing up 2 of the big options, where do Baez, Story and Correa land? Still assuming Detroit and NYY end up with two of the three?

I’d like to see the Cards sign Story and package DeJong and Knizner (with a prospect or two) to Oakland for Bassit or Manaea. Promote Herrera to backup catcher or get a cheap vet. Maybe grab a bench bat (especially if the NL gets the DH) and a bullpen arm or two and call it an offseason.

Gutted to see Scherzer AND Seager sign elsewhere but I see that money absolutely talks. No way Scherzer gets offered 3 years at his age. Don’t see how the Dodgers didn’t lock down Corey!! I’m thinking they gave him a little less in his offer because of poor defense this past year. Well… enjoy the Rangers and Mets I guess.

Because LA shouldn’t be in the business of letting a 101 loss franchise (that never does anything but finish last) take their best young position player, simply because of money. The DH will be full time next year in the NL, and LA’s best candidate for that is Justin Turner, who still offers a premium bat, but isn’t very smooth at 3B any longer. Seager is also a major left handed bat subtracted from a lineup that now doesn’t scare anyone any longer. LA allowed themselves to be outbid twice today, and scouring through the bargain bin to try to find the next Chris Taylor or Max Muncy isn’t going to cut it moving forward. The team severely underachieved last year, and isn’t going to come close to 107 wins again in 2022 if they are going to compound that by being cheapskates.

LA didn’t lose Seager of Scherzer. They let them go to other teams because they knew they weren’t going to offer the same amount as another team. I’m not even sure if they officially offered anything to Seager, and if they did I bet it wasn’t anything close to what the Ranges are paying. If you look at their payroll you knew they weren’t going to spend money like that. They would have easily cleared way over $300mm to keep the roster intact. I’m not sure if that roster would have been good enough to win another WS. Maybe, maybe not. Is that what you want as a Dodger fan to keep the band together for another year at the expense of completely bloating the payroll and jeopardizing their ability to stay competitive in the long run? It’s not being cheapskates, it’s being smart. This is typical fan stupidity drivel that the Dodgers franchise have to deal with. Do you think 3 years $130 million for Scherzer is smart? 10 years for $325 million for Seager smart?

As a Dodger fan I LOVE IT

Hoping for the quietest of off-season’s with hopefully only some 1 and 2 yr deals. This payroll becomes as clean as its been in 10+ years if we do so…

I think that’s what we see play out this offseason for Lad and they still go into 22 projected to win the Div by 6~8 games by all analysts across the board come April

The Dodgers have a very, very good farm as is. In fact, it’s one of the biggest reasons they were comfortable letting Seager walk. They have several very promising infielders on the way.

Please name the promising SS they have to replace Seager. There isn’t one, at least not in the near-term. They have a few position guys with potential to be productive starters at best but not much more than that. Some guys have clearly underperformed. Some guys have some special skills but very limited in other skills. Most promising are a few of the pitching arms but none of those are can’t miss prospects. Cartaya the catcher is probably the highest upside but he’s a long ways from ready. They don’t have an elite farm anymore. The elites graduated and were never really replenished. Much of their more talented players are at the lower levels, so still a lot to prove. These are the farm system rankings from mlb.com, Baseball America and Fangraphs, 16th, 15th and 14th. That is not a very good farm system. You’re living in the past.

No way the Dodgers go after Correa. If they weren’t willing to pay up for Seager, there is no way they’ll pay even more for Correa. The Dodgers were clearly planning to lose Seager this offseason. That’s why they got Trea Turner, who perhaps they will give a Seager-type deal to before he reaches free agency.

In fact, I would have been kinda bummed if they signed this deal. I also believe that (and this is perhaps more painful in the short term) that it was 100% the right move for the Dodgers to pass on Scherzer at the price the Mets paid. Hard part is, of course, how to pivot now.

There is no gun to the head in giving Trea Turner an extension. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Dodgers also pass on Trea Turner if the market gets too hot. They may be secretly hoping that Lux lights it up this season so that they can plug him at SS. Or they’ll look for cheaper options. You need to pick and choose where you want to plow in the big dollars. They already have Betts. Having too many big dollar contracts hinders your flexibility and that’ not Friedman’s style.

I always thought Seager was likely to walk, but Scherzer would be retained. Scherzer’s salary fits in well with LA, who still has 3 years before they have to pay Walker Buehler ace money. Allowing themselves to lose on BOTH players today simply isn’t excusable, particularly with Robbie Ray signing elsewhere. MLB has made their situation worse by refusing to rule on the Trevor Bauer situation, but this team cannot simply sit by and watch a mass exodus of talent without fortifying the roster somehow.

I think the Rangers need one more reliable veteran starter.

With a good lineup and decent pullpen, you can get to the trade deadline with Gray, veteran mid-rotation starter, Dunning, Hearn and the best of the remaining young guys in a position to reassess the need for another arm then.

I don’t think there’s a pressing need to allocate money to that now when there’s little guarantee this team is even ready to contend in the AL West. And the moves we’ve made have freed up quite a bit of prospect capital that we could use on a trade if that need remains at the deadline.

I thought for sure he would go to the Yankees. Maybe Angels or Mariners. Didn’t think Rangers would get him. I’m a Dodgers fan and I knew he wasn’t coming back, especially after trading for Trae Turner. Feels like these teams are over signing though. Saeger is great and I hate that he left, bummed he left actually but that’s a lot of money for someone who’s always hurt. Maybe being in the AL will be good for him, he can DH here and there, personally would use him at DH twice a week to help keep him healthy. Max and Sager both seem like overpays though but good for them. Just sucks they left. Max to me is the one I thought Dodgers had to bring back most, not sure what the heck their plans is. Heaney sure isn’t the answer for replacing him and sounds like Kershaw will most likely be going to the Rangers as well. Dodgers will be fine as far their position players, still have a ton of talent but pitching wise I’m pretty nervous losing Max, Kershaw, May won’t be back until late in the season if he’s even back this season, doesn’t sound like Joe Kelly will be back and not sure what’s going on Kenley. That rotation and bullpen could look drastically different. Congrats to Saeger though and to Rangers fans. You’re getting a good one. Huge fan of the guy and going to miss him.

There is no way LA brings Joe Kelly back; he has a 12 million $ team option that would have been exercised only if he had supplanted Jansen as closer by now. He never came close. He mowed LA down in the 2018 world series, but didn’t really deliver on the three year investment they made in him.

10 years?!? It’s like no one learns… why do teams shoot themselves in the foot over and over like this? To commit to a player until 38, that is crazy… and he has been hugely injury prone thus far in his career.

The Rangers have pinned the next decade of their franchise on two players who are both very good, but they are not utterly fantastic to the point they were worth destroying the team’s future roster flexibility dynamic. Meanwhile, they still have no pitching and have blown their wad.

A 60 win team in 2021, they won’t even play .500 ball in ’22. The franchise is now in shambles.

Some teams are so epically mismanaged, it’s like the GM has no concept of how to use their resources to build a team that can stay dynamic and competitive year in and out. Owner involvement often destroys the best laid plans, I wonder how much that played into this disaster.

I think this is why. If you are a GM (not the owner), what is the difference between 4 years and 10? I mean, if you are no good in the near future, you’ll be out of a job. Therefore, they focus on the now – if it blows up in 5 years, deal w/ it then if still employed.

I am not sure how they don’t have financial flexibility. The majority of their current payroll is retained payroll for Odor and Andrus. Next year $7.25 mil in AAV comes off the books and the years after another $12.33 mil in AAV does. We only have $12mil in active payroll. Even with what they currently have the payroll is only $122 mil AAV. and once retained drops off we have $101 mil payroll. We were 26th in payroll in the entire league.

Maybe you should look at what we actually pay all the players before you go off like that.

They have ~70m/yr committed to 3 players and still have a ton of holes. No team is going to produce enough prospects to fill all of those holes competently, so you’ll need to go to the FA market to fill them. That adds up quickly, especially when you look at their pitching staff.

Investing this kind of money before you have a solid core in place seems like a very risky gamble. They better hope they beat all of the odds when it comes to hitting on the prospects they have. If they see the normal bust/flame out that occurs, they’re gonna be an 80 win team with 2 unmovable contracts or have to run a payroll close to $300m.

The offense is decent if you have Semien Seager Garcia 2x Calhouns Huff/Hiem Lowe and one of IKF/Jung

But they’re gonna need to find some pitching. Cole Winn is close, Lieter will be an MLB starter but probably not this year. But hypothetically you trade MIF depth for a Sonny Gray type and hope 2 of Howard Allard Dunning Otto Hearn Alexy look good in the spring and you’re pretty close to a WC team.

Once you get Winn and Lieter ready this doesn’t look all that awful. It’s not a WS contender at this point but definitely not a 95L team

I’m beginning to suspect it is in the owners interest to dish out gargantuan contracts before the lockout, for leverage purposes, as the general public is going to see these top end figures and wonder what the players could possibly be complaining about.

I think IKF is a great utility player that you can plug-in almost anywhere. I think that is more valuable to the Rangers than having him strictly as a catcher. When I guy like Isaiah can play shortstop, it almost seems like a waste to stick him strictly behind the plate

Hoping the Dodgers respond by re-signing Chris Taylor and Clayton Kershaw.

Wouldn’t surprise me if they also go after on of the remaining upper-tier free agents and if so Freddie Freeman would look good in Dodger Blue. Move Muncy to second and give short to Trea Turner.

I don’t think they sign Taylor because someone will overpay for Taylor and the Dodgers are not going to overpay for Taylor. I see a less likelihood for someone doing that for Kershaw given his current injury and decline rate. Most likely scenario is that he stays with the Dodgers, assuming he wants to stay. I doubt they go after Freeman. The price will have to be right and I just don’t see that.

Does anybody consider Seager a franchise player? He’s a fine hitter but his power is average and he doesn’t live on base. He played in a lineup that had 5-6 elite guys so there was no real, “the guy” pressure.

Ten years is absurd. Overpay for someone like Baez for 3 so you aren’t locked in. Or if you are going nuts, get Correa because he’s a better and can stick at ss.

Is he a franchise player? I don’t know. What does that even mean these days. But he’s a damn good hitter. If you take away that stretch when he got hurt and season where he was physically back but not fully recovered he’s pretty much a 0.900 plus OPS hitter. That is elite at SS. His defense is pretty average and not as bad as some say. Is he worth 10 years and $325 million? No, but I think most contracts are overvalued and not worth it. I’m glad the Dodgers didn’t sign him as much as I like him as a player.

We wont know until later, but im wondering if the new CBA is gonna jack up prices of players. Because its not just Texas spending big money.

Wondering if luxury tax thresholds and future payrolls are going to continue to balloon. ~200M is the top tier mark today. perhaps Texas is recognizing its more like 300M by the late 2020s and theyre spending knowing it wont matter.

End of the day theyre still at least 2SPs and a Corner OF short of a good competitive team, but i gotta think theyre gonna be trading middle infield depth considering they just locked up 2B/SS for 5 years.

If they can get someone to go with Gray, then Winn and Lieter turn out okay theyre a pretty good team in 2023.

From an Astros fan perspective, this makes the Rangers a bigger offensive threat for sure, matches up their offense closer to the Angels. Does not improve pitching and defense, but there’s time left in the off-season. Rangers better hope they win in first half of both Semien and Seager contracts. At this pace, Correa will get $350M+ for 10 years, just not with the Stros ( and I’m good with that).

Stros had the best record in baseball against teams over .500 at 45-32, so they won because they beat up some really good teams. They actually let up against teams below .500. So while it’s interesting the Rangers have added Seager and Semien, you still need to go get a LOT of pitching to match up against the Stros offense which led MLB in runs scored. With Correa gone, they might score less, but then I thought that would be the case when Springer left. Stros have a couple of good options in the minors, Jeremy Pena and Pedro Leon who may pick up the slack. And they re-signed Verlander, who didn’t pitch an inning last year. So don’t count them out in terms of beating up the AL West.

I don’t see how the Rangers are sniffing the playoffs yet. Adding Seager & Semien might move them from #15 on offense, to maybe league-average. But Gray is a solid #3, or maybe a mid-tier #2, but do they have anyone else in their rotation?

I don’t want this to sound mean, but right now, isn’t it Gray,Dunning, Allard, Howard, and maybe Otto?

Don’t forget Taylor Hearn. The Rangers starting rotation won’t be great next season as is, but I think they see next season as a bit of a bridge year, to truly competing in 2023 and beyond. They have several top pitching prospects who should be on track to debut anywhere from late next season into 2023-24. Plus, it will be nice to see what they really have in guys like Allard, Dunning, and Howard in 2022. All three were top 100 prospects just a couple years back, and all still have some solid potential if given a chance.

Yikes. The Jon Gray deal was solid (if a slight overpay) in my opinion, but committing half a billion dollars to two players that come with some real question marks (Seager’s health and ability to remain at SS, Semien’s ability to continue to produce at an elite level as he ages), when the team is probably a good year or two away from legitimately competing… questionable in my opinion. If it was me, I may have tried to spread that money out a bit more, and perhaps waited another offseason before going on a massive spending spree.

On the flip side, I’m sure Rangers fans must be excited simply to see the team making some big moves that signal that they’re getting ready to compete again. The Rangers have a great farm system with plenty of talent soon to graduate, and at least for the next few years they should have an elite middle infield too.

Last four years game played by Seager:

        2021- 95

        2020- 52

        2019- 134

        2018- 26

In the last four years he’s played less than two seasons. 2020 is the Covid year, but the number of games played is shockingly low.

Jon Gray is a solid pick for a pitcher with upside, but right now he’s a #4 at best– they have a long way to go to match all four other teams in the division– especially with the Mariners nabbing Ray today.

With this offseason as proof, MLB owners had better not cry poverty when it comes to the new CBA. Despite Covid, the owners must be making a ton of money or they wouldn’t be shelling out these types of contracts. Maybe it is time MLB teams start opening their books when even Tampa Bay doles out $185 million to sign Wander Franco to a 12 year deal.

10 years is ridiculous for a guy who’s only hit 20 home runs only two times. Hit 26 and 22, those are his career highs. Already has injury history, as he ages he won’t even offer you power, which is typically the last attribute to go. Pretty bad contract. Awful if anything. Last 5/4 years of that contract could be a disaster.

LoL, you should go look at Beltres stats….

HRs in order of seasons played:

          7/15/20/13/21/23/48/19/25/26/25/8/28

Then he was traded to the Rangers…..

          BA was the same thing:

          .215/.275/.290/.265/.257/.240/.334/.255/.268/.276/.266/.265/.321

Then traded to the Rangers. Everyone said the same thing about Beltres contract being bad because he was coming off his best season and only had one other season in the previous 13 that was that good. and he was 31 years old.

Beltre also had 5 155+ games played seasons by 27 and was a gold glove fielder. I’m not saying Seager isn’t a very good player but Beltre was the NL MVP (less Bonds) in his free agent season and Seager is far from that.

And as great as Seager is he’s been hurt his entire career. What happens as he ages on this contract? The Rangers are still going to finish 4th despite all the money they’re spending.

First: Due congratulations to Rangers team and fans! I’d be absolutely stoked if I were a TX fan right now – what an awesome offseason to behold.

Second: Serious question, given the relative indifference between, say $275MM & $325MM (filthy rich for generations upon generations either way you cut it), I wonder if Seager doesn’t regret not going to a team like the Yankees (his favorite team) IF Rangers don’t win a ring.

Next, I’m curious about TX’s strategy. Listen, I’m not criticizing, because right now it looks like the Yankees have no 2022 plan, no 2027 plan, and no 2032 plan. But TX blew a huge percentage of salary on position players, and is that the smartest/best allocation of their budget instead of Semien and a front-end SP?

And does anyone happen to know where they sit for their CBT-salary totals for 2022?

Anyway, congratulations, again. I would’ve loved to have Seager’s bat in pinstripes!

I think you answered your own question, NYY doesn’t seem to have a plan and TX atleast has their checkbook out. We all know you can’t spend your way to a WS but talent sure helps especially when you don’t have much, TX.
Granted we don’t know if these deals are back/front end loaded but TX was ~$80MM before the Seager deal. Let’s say they land around ~$110M after Seager deal AAV. There’s another $30-$40MM to $150MM, a number ownership is apparently not shying away from.

Well, it’s a perfectly valid question, the biggest challenge of which is Stanton’s NTC. He would likely only approve CA, some say only So Cal, and then a contender within that group, which leaves…..LAD (maybe SD? But doubtful)

Trust me, with our luck, if he went to SF or LAD he would have another MVP year, bat .350 with 54 HRs, and everyone would be talking about what a steal he is on his contract. Oh yeah, and he’d play 150 games/year until he retires.

Yes, I think you’re right, my friend. The only way I see Cashman coming back from intense criticism is to sign Correa or make a series of good moves. First, I don’t like that signing because I don’t like him as a long-term SS, and he now has teams by the walnuts because he and Story are left.

Cashman can salvage this team despite his methodology is he does four moves from this point forward:

1- Get Correa / Story, the latter is my preference to free up cash/commitments later on
2- Use leftover money to acquire Rizzo or trade for Olson
3- Trade for Contreras or Garver as the primary backstop
      4- Acquire a solid #2-3 slot SP

What this current administration fails to realize is this: Aaron Boone said teams are “closing the gap” in them in the ALE, when in reality, they’ve closed it and are in the process of passing the Yankees unless something changes. We cannot win by saying, “We have a $220M payroll!”

A 10 year/$325m contract to a guy who never plays a full season is foolish. If the contract was 10/$250m, they Yankees might have gone for it. I don’t believe Correa is going to the Yankees. Between the sigh stealing saga and the bashing of Jeter, NY fans will never accept him. I could see them going after Baez. If Volpe is what he seems to be, and Torres doesn’t return to form, Baez could shift back to 2nd. Either way, the Yankees are not going to keep adding $30m a year players. Get Rizzo back via FA, or trade for Olsen in Oakland.

Y4L: I agree with you100%. I’ve said numerous times that at that length contract and for those $, they should go after Baez or Story – both excellent defenders and have great bats for defense-first guys. Plus, it frees up about $150M to make other relevant acquisitions and sign Judge to an extension. Love Seager’s bat but it doesn’t surprise me they wouldn’t go for him. In fact, it may have been the years more than the money, in reality, because they would have an aging Stanton, Judge(?), and Seager/Correa, all of whom have injury histories.

But, if cash does nothing, or only signs Story, for example, he’s going to get crushed after the way they talked about approaching this offseason and the fans’ expectations.

And as the Astros painfully learned in both the 2019 and 2021 WS, good pitching beats good hitting come crunch time in the playoffs. So I unless Semien and Seagar can pitch too, the Rangers still have some work to do to catch up.

Yes, Fg3, I agree with your point. My problem is this: the Yankees are showing a strong trend to assuage large contracts when they were the source, almost single-handedly, of creating increases in the annual market for certain FAs.

Not in itself a terrible thing, but couple that with Hal’s open desire to install a hard cap, and you see that he appears to be obstinately refusing to participate because he wants to prove that he believes in said cap – and it’s all for one big, selfish reason – a cap = boatloads more money for Hal.

Here’s Hal’s challenge: much like a restaurant that is the most popular because of its flavor, despite its incredible expense, yet decides to cut back on costs of their ingredients to make a little more money, eventually the Yankees past and their dynasties will be so far behind that nobody will care. Players then will care about taxes in NY and not go there, or weather. Young fans will not be attracted to the Yankees’ history because it will no longer be relevant. All this will result in Hal losing money, but he’s too blind to see he’s losing his own brand.

They would be better in 2022 with those signings, but would would they be better in 2024 or 2025 when they likely expect to compete? Scherzer has been amazing the last few years, but he’s going to hit that wall in the near future, and likely before the Rangers are truly in their window. They signed Seager to be their centerpiece for the next 5-7 years. Will he be overpaid in the last 2-3 years of his deal? Probably, but that’s the price you pay to sign a player just starting his prime years.

Scherzer and Ray wouldn’t sign with a losing team. Rangers had to overpay the ones they did sign to even consider going to a losing team.

The Stupidity going around the MLB is exactly why Chris ILLICH needs to hire me as Al Avila’s governor, to.make sure he does nothing stupid like this.

Liaison to the Office of the Owner.
Hire me Chris, I mean, Mr. Illich; before it’s too late.

Free agency is for putting the finishing touches on an otherwise solid core, i.e. what the Mariners are doing after winning 90 games last season.

Free agency is not for buying an entire squad. That gets entirely too expensive and what teams consistently win that way? Rangers won 60 games last season and with these signings might get them to 70 – 75.

Rangers win the offseason and will finish below .500.

Rangers had a payroll that was something like 26/30 last year, right? I’d argue they don’t exactly have the foundation in place to be spending this kind of money, but hey… guess these guys are your foundation lol. Good for Corey…. That’s money that not only changes his life, but his families life, his kids life, and his kids kids…. Possibly beyond. I can’t even compute how my life would be with a fraction of that money lol

They had a payroll Before at 150 and the tv deal brings in 50-60 million a year plus a new stadium. You don’t know what your talking about

He is talking about last years salary, not historic . What he and others are getting at is pulling the trigger too early coming out of a rebuild can be super risky. You burn 2-3 yrs of your high priced FA prime years waiting to get competitive. Most successful teams develop a solid core then augment it with a sprinkling of FAs to fill any holes. Who are the rangers core young players who have established themselves as building blocks?

Yeah they didn’t a couple years earlier but they need butts in the new stadium, that’s why. I’m Dallas they don’t come unless you have a decent team.

I like Seager, just not for this many years and the amount of money. Rangers making moves, probably exciting for their fan base but is this even a .500 team now? They must have more spending to do. Maybe they’re trying to repeat their wild success of having 3 of the 5 worst contracts in baseball like they did years ago.

So due to inflation and demand, Seager is getting paid more annually and in total than A-Rod did to play SS and hit in the middle of the order back in 2000. Was the 2000 version of A-Rod a better player than Seager is now? Rodriguez was two years younger than Seager is currently when he got that record contract. However he was on “the juice.” I hope the Rangers have a plan for better pitching because Jon Gray isn’t a championship move. The Rangers’s rotation didn’t have a single starting pitcher with a winning record last year.

A great move by the Rangers. Finally spending some money for the fans in the new Ballpark. As much as I wanted Seager as Yankee. IMO the Yankees need more than just Seager to put them over the top. The Yankees right now have more holes than swiss cheese. The Yankees need Quantity of good players and not just one great Player

Mass over-pay for someone who isn’t very durable. But kudos to him for getting the money

    MISSED IT BY THAT [ = ] MUCH !!
According to informed sources, The Marlins were in on Corey Seager right up until he signed the deal to join the Rangers.. The Marlins made a “strong” offer, but not one that matched the Rangers’ financial commitment. The Marlins weren’t the only team to be outbid.
The Minnesota Twins had also been linked to Seager.
