Yankees Interested In Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Andrelton Simmons

By Mark Polishuk | December 1, 2021 at 12:00pm CDT

The Yankees have shown interest in a trade for Rangers infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa, according to Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News.  SNY’s Andy Martino (Twitter link) also notes the Bronx Bombers’ interest in Kiner-Falefa, and adds that free agent Andrelton Simmons continues to be on the Yankees’ radar as the team explores shortstop possibilities.

This isn’t the first time the Yankees have been linked to either player.  Grant notes that New York has asked about IKF in the past, while Martino reported in October that the Yankees talked to the Twins about landing Simmons prior to this summer’s trade deadline.

Kiner-Falefa is under arbitration control through the 2023 season while Simmons could quite possibly be signed for just a one-year contract, and thus both players represent the type of short-term shortstop additions New York is reportedly looking to acquire.  While the Yankees’ need at shortstop immediately generated headlines due to the presence of so many big names in the free agent market, the team may already have either Anthony Volpe or Oswald Peraza ticketed as the shortstop of the future.  Carlos Correa, Trevor Story, and Chris Taylor are the remaining top-tier shortstop candidates on the market, but barring a collapse in their market to the point that they would take a one-year stopgap contract, the Yankees don’t seem to be interested in any of the major names.

Taking nothing away from Kiner-Falefa or Simmons, of course, as they would both bring some value to the Yankees’ shortstop position.  While neither player excelled at the plate in 2021, both are tremendous fielders, and Simmons obviously has a track record as one of the better defenders in the history of the shortstop position.

As per the Outs Above Average (16) and Defensive Runs Saved (15) metrics, Simmons kept up that spectacular form over his 1091 2/3 innings at shortstop last year.  The UZR/150 metric delivered only a -1.1 score for Simmons, however, while Kiner-Falefa also had an outlier in the form of a -7 OAA.  Kiner-Falefa otherwise graded well in his first season as a full-time shortstop, with a +10 DRS and +1.1 UZR/150 over 1360 innings.

Kiner-Falefa also won a Gold Glove as a third baseman in 2020, so the Yankees would have some extra flexibility in how they chose to deploy him in the lineup.  Gio Urshela can also play some shortstop and DJ LeMahieu can be used at third, second, or first base.  Simmons has never played anywhere other than shortstop during his MLB career, so he would be more of a traditional everyday answer at the position.

With Corey Seager and Marcus Semien now locked into the Texas infield for the next decade, the Rangers could make Kiner-Falefa expendable at the right price, though he also has some natural import to their 2022 plans.  Top prospect Josh Jung is expected to make his MLB debut next year and seems like a long-term answer at the hot corner, but Kiner-Falefa could certainly stick around to handle third base until Jung is ready, or if Jung struggles in his first taste of Major League action.

Typical cheap Yankees. How can they ever win if they won’t expand the payroll like the big boys?

They’re already the number 2 payroll if they do nothing. What big boys are you referring to aside from the Dodgers?

Giving Correa more than the Rangers overpay for Seager will be loved by fans for about a week. Then it’ll be thrown into the “reckless contract” category with Cole, Stanton, etc.

No Galvis, no Simmons, no IKF – unless it’s strictly for utility role and to give a real SS a break (except Simmons because she can’t hit, so it’s still no).

Yeah, Chev, you were dead-on, man. He cannot be Cashman’s first plan though. He’s got to be a fallback option but it’s not looking that way, unless this is a serious long-game bluff.

I think, if the Yankees offense weren’t so one-dimensional (and non-existent last year), he would be fine as an only option. I really like him as a utility guy, playing every day, giving 2, 3, & SS off on a rotating basis. He’s a good talent to have on a club, no doubt.

This could just be a feint by Cashman, to float Simmons or a trade so as not to raise the price of Correa, Story or Taylor. Cashman has kept his powder dry, and there has to be a reason for it. Could just be economic…maybe they want to stay under the CBT and don’t know where that’s going to land. Or maybe it’s strategic. Next 11 hours could be interesting

Typically boneheaded rocky comment. A beer will be $15 at Yankees stadium whether they sign anyone.

As long as the market will bear the cost that’s what people will pay. Doesn’t matter if the Yankees run out a 60 million dollar payroll or a 300 million. Beer and tickets will cost the same unless people stop buying at those prices.

Yankees and Dodgers are in different situations

Dodgers can afford to sit back and relax because they won 106 games last year and replaced their biggest lost (seager) with a better player before they even lost him.

Dodgers should still be in line to fight for the division and probably easily a WC.

the yanks started way back of the rays, and the wild card competition in AL has greatly improved around them.

Jays have a full year of Berrios, Manoah, Gausman and a full year of their bullpen improvements.

Semien’s production is replaced IF you get a healthy year from Springer. They haven’t made huge strides but the bullpen improvements alone they made last year should keep them at the very least as competitive.

NYYs are headed for 4th in the AL East and will be embarrassed by the Mets. These guys are like having a pitcher hit; it’s not like the NYYs were a run-producing machine in 2021. They’re doing nothing to improve the team. And relying on unproven over-hyped farmhands is a real lame excuse. Do a history check on how well that’s worked out. They deserve a fan revolt.

Wonder if a trade like IKF for Gary Sanchez could be of value to both clubs? Allows rangers to have a power bat at the bottom of the lineup that could fill in until Sam Huff is ready. Rangers history shows they don’t seem to mind a bat in the order that K’s a lot with a low average so long as he hits bombs.

Sanchez hit .204 last year. Didn’t he lose his starting job for a while as well? I might be mistaken on that. I take it there’s no way IKR can be the regular catcher? Is his defense or framing terrible or something along those lines? MUCH rather have IKR than Sanchez. if anything, the Rangers should seek to trade him plus a few prospects to Cincinnati for Castillo.

He may be the poster child for short term place holder. So let’s start the bidding… most offers will be accepted.

Yeah, Yanks have a few BP guys as good or better than Cessa. It depends on what they are looking for (LHP, RHP, S/O or GB, etc). They could certainly match up though.

I really like DeJong. In fact, one of the very few non-FA SS trade acquisitions that I would actually be okay with. Super strong defense and good bat (bad year, I know, but still).

Mike King & DeJong have pretty similar trade values according to BBTV. That particular trade was actually suggested to me by a Cardinals guy. @Joe Says… doesn’t care for it, but I do that in a minute.

DeJong, Kiermaier, Rizzo would go a long ways towards revamping the lineup. Add a solid midrotation arm & that should be enough to keep the Yanks in that 95 win place Cash/Hal seem so very fond of.

Chris Taylor or Trevor Story are my two top choices to play ss this season. Maybe sign both and have Taylor in CF and Story play ss. Story is also very athletic and I read he can also play CF so when Volpe is ready Story can also be moved to CF. Use Gleyber Torres, Voit, and a few prospects to acquire Olsen. Sign Carlos Colon to add depth to rotation. That is the best plan for this off season. If Freddie Freeman is available than sign him rather than trading away Torres and prospects for Olsen but try to deal Voit as he will be unhappy as a bench piece.

I think you are correct bring in Taylor & Story who will be cheaper I wouldnt put too much stock on the kids yet they are still at least two years away but I feel the Yankees can trade Gio while he has still some value and thus allows DJ to play third base if they trade for Olson or Re-sign Rizzo but bringing in Taylor,Story & Olson can upgrade the Yankees defensively and offensively.

Obviously to bring in Olson will take some ransom but they should pounce on him and this team will look different with those three players.

As pointed out no way the Yankees would flip Gary Sanchez for IKF you can’t go with one catcher (Higgy) who is a liability with the bat and even though rates as a really good defensive catcher it is a small sample they have based it off you have to see how he will do in a full season as a starter which the Yankees know he is not.

Cashman is not the one to make the decision either it is Hal and he is on the committee and was one of 7 owners wanting to lower to $185 mil so Cashman could be under a lot of constraints because of that reason. Also, could be drive the price down a bit more if the Yankees trade Gary Sanchez a catcher will be involved that is a given.

Yankees tendered Luke, Andujar, Sanchez all may not seem to have value to some fans however they hit the market in the waiver wire if they werent tendered Gary would have been picked up quickly his defense has regressed under Boone but all players have regressed past two years under Boone.

The Cardinals are undecided on which of their shortstops to start (Paul DeJong or Sosa). Both are great fielders and each has their Pluses on offense.

Either of them would be an upgrade for the Yankees!!

The Cardinals and Yankees would make good trading partners!!! Because of their quality extra personnel are blocked by current starters or Gold Glovers—— each team could fill the others weaknesses!!!!!

And we have Sanchez, ball in glove with a runner 40 feet from home and he is still safe because no one thought to mention to Gary that you have to tag the runner.

But not to worry … I’m sure Boone gave him a hug and an attaboy.

The Yankees have Urshela for two more years. He can play short. He may not have the greatest range, but he’s reliable defensively, and his bat has been good enough to keep him in the Yankee lineup for the past 3 years.

So, instead of spending $300M on a shortstop, why not spend that money on two corner infielders with power?

So they might be better served chasing after the likes of Freeman, Bryant, Castellanos, or look for trade opportunities at those positions.
