Eloy Jimenez Leaves Game With Hamstring Injury

By Mark Polishuk | April 23, 2022 at 9:56pm CDT

9:56PM: The “initial diagnosis” on Jimenez is a hamstring tear or strain, Jon Heyman of the New York Post tweets.

7:07PM: Jimenez’s injury is thought to be “significant,” manager Tony La Russa told The Athletic’s James Fegan and other reporters.  While more testing is taking place, the team believes for now that Jimenez won’t miss the rest of the season, and this absence won’t be as long as his four-month IL stint following his pectoral surgery last year.

4:03PM: White Sox outfielder Eloy Jimenez left today’s game with what the team described as right hamstring soreness.  While trying to beat out a grounder in the second inning, Jimenez seemingly took a bad step after hitting first base and had to lay down on the grass.  A cart was required to take Jimenez off the field.

Considering how ominous the situation looked, “only” a sore hamstring would seem to represent a best-case scenario for Jimenez and the team, though the outfielder is continuing to undergo more tests.  It would certainly seem like Jimenez will miss at least the next couple of games for rest and evaluation purposes, and a trip to the injured list seems like a possibility.

Losing Jimenez would represent yet another major absence in what has already been an injury-riddled season for the White Sox.  While most of the injuries have come on the pitching side, Yoan Moncada (oblique strain) and Yermin Mercedes (hamate surgery) have yet to play in 2022, and AJ Pollock only just returned from a hamstring injury of his own.  Luis Robert and Josh Harrison have also recently missed time, leaving the Sox particularly shorthanded for this weekend’s series against the Twins.

Jimenez is no stranger to the IL, as he played only 55 games in 2021 due to a ruptured left pectoral tendon that delayed his season debut until July 26.  Between this layoff and some other minor injuries, it isn’t surprising that Jimenez hit a modest .249/.303/.437 over 231 plate appearances last season.  While the White Sox were still able to win the AL Central even without Jimenez (and Robert) for big portions of 2021, all of this year’s injuries have contributed to Chicago’s 6-7 record heading into play today.

The Indians. In fact, I’ve heard their own play-by-play guy repeatedly call them the Indians multiple times this year already…Then, when he says Guardians in the next sentence it sounds like there are three teams playing. It’s kind of cool.

It’s time to blow this Sox team up and trade everyone. They’re clearly not going to contend with this iteration of a roster. They need to clean house from the top down starting with ownership, Williams, Hahn, and the rest of the roster.

The Angels have won a World Series this century. Are the only team to never lose more than 95 games. Had the best record in baseball in 2014. And have six division championships this century. What a horribly run organization.

I.’m more than happy to rip some dweeb Indian’s fan who rips the White Sox on a thread about a White Sox player.

Angels: lets live in modern reality. One of the weakest farm systems in baseball, a farm system notably devoid of any pitching; a 2021 draft where a GM childishly picked 20 pitchers, not the best players available; a team who is wasting a generational talent in Mike Trout, and has done basically jack squat with him; a team who just set $28M on fire in Upton; a team who’s money spent per win over past 5 years has to be near the lowest in baseball.

Newsflash, fan boy, its a business and Angels are one of the worst run, (if not the single worst) franchises in baseball. Period.

And its not just “ripping some dweeb on a whitesox feed”. you post your ‘how you should be running the franchise’ nonsense on far too many other feeds…i am merely point out, those who live in glass houses…

        • Halo11Fan

Everything I wrote is true and somehow that weak farm system keeps producing players.

They are far from the worse franchise. But this isn’t about the Angels or the Indians. It’s about the White Sox and they don’t need dweebs insulting their team. Only a jerk does that.

No, it’s not…unless the purpose that you have them on your team is to get injured. Might want to look up what reliable means. Or you can keep up the mental gymnastics

It seems that Jiminez is struggling to simply stay healthy at all, which is a shame for the ChiSox given his talent. I hope this isn’t indicative of his future but it would be nice to get full seasons out of Jiminez/Robert.

Nonetheless, ChiSox are being brutalized with the injury bug, reminiscent of the ‘19 Yankees… I feel for you, ChiSox fans. Hope your team gets healthy because they look like a really talented group.

The Yankees have two OF guys that could play out there: Gallo/Hicks. The fans would be elated to hand over either one for some prospects of your choice.

Do you really think any team with OF injuries would trade any of their Top 25 prospects for Aaron Hicks? He’s the definition of an injury waiting to happen!

No one wants Gallo either unless he only costs 2 or 3 low level prospects to acquire. He is the definition of a 3 outcome player (HR, walk or strikeout) and he can’t seem to handle the pressure of playing in NY. His value has cratered since moving to NY, so NY will have to agree to basically a salary dump trade in order to get a team to take him on right now. The hope will Gallo has always been that he could figure out how to cut down on his swing with 2 strikes and hit more singles, but he gotten worse every year since his breakout season. He’s a ‘finished product’ at the plate right now and it’s not a pretty one.

Good thoughts right back at ya Yankee clipper, you seem like a knowledgeable fan who understands that Karma comes after those who chuckle at others injury misfortunes. Always unfortunate when greats like Trout, Tatis, Buxton and Eloy are down for the count. Your Yankees weathered quite the storm with multiple TJs that felled Severino and Britton. Wouldn’t wish the injury bug on anyone else but feel the first few weeks are only a harbinger for what’s to come this season w/o a full spring training.

No offseason contact & short ST. Again, depth is the only thing that matters this season. If you don’t have it your season may be torpedoed. I expect a record number of injuries this season in the first few months. This may just be the start of injuries for the White Sox and every other team. More injuries are coming, it will get worse.

Tough look for the league that wanted to start the season asap. These guys didn’t get enough runway for a clean takeoff. This mess is in the hitting and the health. This price isn’t worth getting the 162 games. Should’ve made it 150 and accepted the stupidity of their egos.

Just a reminder that it was the league that said no games would be made up, and it was the union that insisted on the full schedule, as its more important to get your members full pay, than to keep them healthy. It was the union that forced the short training camp, to get in the full season.

(Steve Stone) Or maybe you mean the TV play by play man who is so biased that ESPN, CBS, and MLB have him doing nationally televised baseball, football, and college basketball games none of which include the White Sox or any Chicago team. These types of injuries (torn pec, torn hammy) occur most often when the soft tissue doesn’t develop as fast as the muscle. That usually only occurs when muscle is artificially enlarged and strengthened. Some form of PED is most likely the reason. Two such injuries proves causality and not inference

I was watching the game when this injury took place. Eloy was laying on the ground for few minutes holding onto his hamstring right above his knee. The trainers to LaRussa came out calling for the cart, but lets not forget that was a precautionary move since he laid on the ground for a few minutes to signing a big contract. Jimenez got off his back and put weight on it.

Its sad, but the way Eloy is panning out, you’ll be lucky to get 40-50 games out of him every season. His history is nothing but injuries. Not saying talent-wise, but he’s shaping up to be a lot like Jorge Soler…..a dude that can rake when he’s healthy, cannot play defense to save his life, and absolutely cannot stay healthy for an entire year. If it keeps up, Eloy will be just another injury-prone journeyman.
