Yankees Place Tim Locastro On Injured List

By Darragh McDonald | May 8, 2022 at 9:19am CDT

The Yankees announced a few roster moves prior to today’s doubleheader. Outfielder Tim Locastro is going on the injured list with a left latissimus dorsi (back) strain. Right-handed pitcher Ron Marinaccio has been recalled to take his place on the active roster. Outfielder Estevan Florial will be the team’s 27th man for today’s twin bill.

The outfield mix in the Bronx is a bit crowded, with Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Hicks and Joey Gallo usually sharing the three spots on the grass as well as the designated hitter slot. As such, the speedy Locastro has been mostly coming off the bench for pinch running and defensive replacement duties. As such, he’s played 15 games this year but only made 15 plate appearances. He’s made the best of that time, hitting .231/.333/.462 for a wRC+ of 139, as well as swiping four bags.

Locastro was acquired from the Diamondbacks last year but then injured his ACL after just nine games with the Bombers. In the offseason, he was non-tendered but then re-signed after the lockout. Although the club hasn’t provided a timeline for his recovery, this injury will mark another frustrating step in his Yankees tenure.

Locastro has been important and very valuable as a late inning pinch runner, he will be missed. Florial also has good speed but not in the same league as Locastro as a base stealer.
A little surprised they didn’t recall Clarke Schmidt, guess they want to stretch him out before they recall him. He’ll be needed as a starter sometime during the season.
Hope all that rain and rest hasn’t slowed the Yankees down. The Rays are breathing down their necks.

I heard somewhere that Schmidt will start later this week so he’ll probably be swapped for Marinaccio

I really hope all the beer-chugging at the Rangers games hasn’t slowed the Yankees down during the rain-outs!

Seems backwards as reported. The 27th man is almost always a pitcher, so that would be Marinaccio. With Locastro injured, Florial will need to stay as the backup CFer and speed off the bench.

Well, that sucks. Locastro’s awesome for this team. Exactly the type of player missing from last year’s roster. Maybe Florial will impress with his annual 5 at-bats though?

I really like Marinaccio, but I’ve watched him pitch live in the minors several times and the person I thought of when I saw him throw? Adam Ottavino. During his last outing I couldn’t help but think the same thing. Hopefully the kid gets it right and turns into another devastating BP guy for us.

    And, Samuel troll post in 5, ,4 , 3, 2, …..

Friends, Romans, Yankee fans . . . I come to praise Cashman, not to bury him.

Offense was last year’s problem, and I doubted that enough was done in the offseason to remedy that. I also feared that Kiner-Falefa couldn’t defend well at short. I was wrong.

After today’s first low-scoring game, the Yankees are second in OPS in the majors and seventh in average. IKF was a great addition on both sides of the ball. Just what the lineup needed.

It’s early, but I have to concede that Brian did a good job. Now, please just stay healthy, guys.

That said, get a look at Glenn Otto in game two. Cashman’s overpay for Gallo was huge.

Fink, I agree with you, and I am probably the most critical of Brian Cashman. It’s early, but, so far so good. If they succeed, I will gladly admit how wrong I was about Cashman’s decisions.

Imagine if we had Story or Seager or someone else and they were performing as they are now? For that money? Yikes! Granted, the season is long and they will probably return to statistical normality over the course of 162, but it would be brutal right now.

As for the overpay of Gallo? Yeah, or another way to word it is: Gallo’s underperformance is huge.

Yeah so far, Clipper, Cashman looks like the man. Would love another left handed bat though. Have my greedy eyes on Benintendi. Good contact bat and above average outfielder. I believe he’s a free agent at the end of the year. Wonder if KC would consider trading him before the trade deadline? Of course we’d have to find a place to dump Joey Gallo.

Of course, as soon as I compliment the offense, they go cold. Sorry about that.

I think MLB’s hand check of pitchers is BS. What’s to stop the pitcher from wiping his hand off on his uniform before he’s checked? Did you see Barlow, the Rangers’ closer, constantly going to a dark spot on the bill of his cap after licking his fingers, exactly like Kimbrel used to do? And the pitchers know now that their hats aren’t being checked anymore.

They might as well drop the charade.
