A Cheap And Controllable Catcher That Could Be Available At The Deadline

By Darragh McDonald | July 18, 2022 at 11:58pm CDT

On MLBTR’s recent list of trade candidates, the top name was a catcher, Willson Contreras. There are lots of reasons to expect he will be moved in the coming weeks, as he’s an impending free agent who is playing well for a bad team. There’s always the chance of the Cubs working out an extension to keep him, but based on the way Kris Bryant, Javier Baez and Anthony Rizzo were all dealt last year, it seems reasonable to expect that Contreras is following them out of town.

MLBTR’s Steve Adams recently took a look at the potential fits, finding the Astros, Mets, Rays and Giants as the most likely, though listing plenty of other teams that make sense to some degree. Only one of them will get Contreras, however, leaving those other teams with issues behind the plate and having to consider other options. The only other catcher to crack MLBTR’s list was down at #41: Sean Murphy of the Athletics.

Though Contreras and Murphy are both catchers, there are many ways in which their situations are different. While Contreras is a rental and earning a $9.625MM salary this year, Murphy has yet to reach arbitration and still has three years of cheap control remaining. Contreras is also considered a bat-first catcher whereas Murphy has generally earned more praise for the defensive side of his game.

There are plenty of reasons for the A’s to hold onto Murphy, which is why he was so much lower on the MLBTR rankings than Contreras. Though the A’s have traded away many core players in the past year, those were guys who had come close to free agency and made themselves more expensive through arbitration. Murphy is still cheap and controllable, not to mention talented. He picked up a Gold Glove award last year for his excellent defense and was considered the third best catcher in the majors by the Fielding Bible Awards voting, behind Jacob Stallings and Austin Hedges. He’s also no slouch at the plate, with a career batting line of .229/.316/.423. That amounts to a wRC+ of 108, or 8% above league average. This year, his line is a smidge below that pace, coming in at .241/.308/.409, but that’s still a wRC+ of 106. His walk rate is a bit below his previous levels, but he’s also striking out less. That above-average batting line, when combined with his excellent defense, has allowed him to produce 2.3 wins above replacement on the year already, according to FanGraphs.

So, why even consider trading him then? For one thing, they could surely ask for a haul in return, given all those aforementioned attributes. There’s also the position of the team, who are currently 32-61, the worst record in the American League and ahead of only the Nationals among all teams in the majors. They’re certainly not competitive now and it’s hard to imagine them completely remaking themselves fast enough to suddenly become competitors again in 2023. Even if they feel 2024 is realistic, Murphy will be in his penultimate year of control by then, the same situation that players like Matt Olson and Matt Chapman were in when they were traded this offseason.

There’s also another factor to consider, which is that the A’s have one of the best catching prospects in baseball knocking on the door of the big leagues. Acquired in the Olson trade, Shea Langeliers is considered the #83 prospect in the sport by Baseball America, #52 by FanGraphs, #81 by ESPN, #80 by The Athletic and #31 by MLB Pipeline. Like Murphy, he is considered a glove-first catcher, but still hits at an above-average rate. This year, in 74 Triple-A games, he’s hit 16 home runs, stolen five bases and walked in 11.8% of his plate appearances. His batting line of .272/.364/.505 amounts to a 115 wRC+, or 15% above league average. He recently represented the American League in the 2022 Futures Game, earning MVP honors after hitting a home run and throwing out an attempted base stealer.

Langeliers is now 24 years old, turning 25 in the offseason. If the A’s were able to find an offer on Murphy that they liked, they could pull the trigger on a deal and let Langeliers have the final two months of the season to get acquainted with the big league pitching staff and life in the big leagues generally, going into the offseason with the torch already passed. The A’s reportedly considered dealing Murphy this past offseason, and that was before Langeliers had been acquired.

The club’s catching depth doesn’t stop there, as they also have Tyler Soderstrom in the system. He also shows up on all five of those aforementioned prospect lists, ahead of Langeliers in each case. However, there are some question marks there, as he is still just 20 years old, playing in High-A and predicted to move out from behind the plate down the line. (He’s played more first base than catcher this year.)

For a team looking to add a catcher, Murphy might be more appealing than Contreras due to his extra control. The Guardians, for instance, have Austin Hedges as their primary catcher right now. He is an impending free agent and is hitting just .172/.227/.270 this year. As a team that’s 2 1/2 games back of the Wild Card, they might not want to give up prospects for a rental like Contreras, and might also balk at his salary given their low-payroll ways. Acquiring Murphy, however, would allow them to upgrade on Hedges for a postseason push this year but also three more seasons. The Marlins recently acquired Jacob Stallings to be their backstop, though he’s having a terrible year at the plate and is turning 33 this winter. They’re 5 1/2 games out of the playoffs right now and would likely not be interested in rentals. The Twins recently put Ryan Jeffers on the IL and aren’t expecting him back for a couple of months. That leaves them with impending free agent Gary Sanchez as their primary catcher. Perhaps they’d consider a Sanchez-Murphy tandem now that leads into a Murphy-Jeffers pairing next year. Christian Vazquez is having a nice season for the Red Sox, but both he and backup Kevin Plawecki are heading into free agency in a few months. Acquiring Murphy could spare them worrying about their catching situation in an offseason when they might also lose J.D. Martinez, Xander Bogaerts and Nathan Eovaldi. They’re also just outside the playoffs right now, two games back, and would surely prefer non-rentals.

Murphy is in a little bit of trade candidate limbo right now, as the same things that make him appealing to other teams will make the A’s want to hang onto him. However, if some team steps up and places a striking offer in front of them, the presence of Langeliers could allow them to stay strong behind the plate while stockpiling talent for other areas of the roster. Given his three remaining years of control, they don’t have to make a trade between now and the August 2 deadline. They could wait until the offseason and take their time looking for the best deal. However, there might be other sellers who join them at that point, such as the Blue Jays, who will have to figure out their logjam of Danny Jansen, Alejandro Kirk, Zack Collins and Gabriel Moreno. The emergence of William Contreras gives the Braves a future surplus, as they also have Travis d’Arnaud and Manny Pina under contract for next year. (Pina is out for the rest of this year, meaning it’s not an issue now.) Tom Murphy is also done for the year but has one season of team control remaining. Maybe the M’s consider moving him in the winter, as Cal Raleigh has taken over and is having a breakout campaign. There’s lots of uncertainty in that future, but for the next couple of weeks, the A’s have the best and perhaps only non-rental catcher available. Although they don’t have to make a deal in the coming days, it’s possible that it’s actually the best time.

Really wish we could hold onto Murph, don’t see it being plausible now with all our depth at catcher.

Murphy’s fate was sealed the day Langeliers was acquired. Just had to wait until Shea was properly seasoned.

Didnt the A’s Trot out a lineup with Vogt Bettancourt, Murphy and Jonah Bride this year. Maybe 4 catcher lineups are the new moneyball

Didn’t the A’s just draft a catcher in the 1st round too? Although I get it that he’s a ways away, of course.

Aside from pitcher, analytics consider the catcher the most important defensive player on the field by a very wide margin. Best to stock up.

Vogt is one of the worst catchers of all time, its weird. He was a LF before the A’s made him go back to catching. I have never seen a catcher fail to catch a pitch so many times as I have with Vogt. He’s literally bad at catching the baseball. No idea why he’s still on the team as a player, just make him bench coach already.

You would think that statement not true but could be. How many times have you seen the Ms and Lorenz catch? I will give him this he got better over the winter. He is a bad catcher and can’t hit. We will take either player and throw in Winkie.

Guy started to get me to like him again. I didn’t have a huge problem with the bench cleaning brawl. It is complaining about close pitches. Throwing his eqpt etc. He lost me again. I know it doesn’t matter but let me believe until I get on tomorrow that it does.

If the As become relevant in 24/25, Langliers seems to be the logical fit at catcher … timing wise. That said, if the rebuild takes longer, agreed, he’s the next to be jettisoned off to another “home” and probably Susac is “next up”? I like how the As are thinking here.

@MLB1225; agreed. Not sure what the As need, but looks like 25 (maybe 2024) is their return to relevance? So focusing on quality prospects in exchange for Murph with expected launch dates in 25 (24) is a strategy?

The A’s will not return to relevance until their stadium deal is reached, either in Oakland or another city. They actually went ‘Major League’ this year and tried to put together a team that would lose. Big article in the NYT earlier this year

I’d be semi-interested in reading the article, but most baseball writers are incredibly Far Left on these issues. They feel that, if only the teams spent every nickel and dime, they could all be above .500.

The fact is that Oakland is doing what most small market teams are doing, which is rotating 4 years of contending with two years of tanking. They are trying to win, just not in 2022 & 2023.

Much the same as the Bucs, which given your name, makes your comment a little odd.

As much flak as the A’s get (especially after the off-season they had) — I think teams with limited payroll flexibility almost have to do the 3-4 years of contention and then sell off once that time has passed. I’d say Oakland is second to only Colorado in terms of being complete non-factor destinations for free agents.

There just doesn’t seem to be any other way.

Yeah the A’s need to move Murphy and Montas ASAP for the best prospects they can get. (preferably Pitchers) Maybe they can package them and get a truly elite prospect.

Call up Shea and see what he’s got, Maybe even move Laureano if they get a good offer.

That’s never really been their strategy. They are way more likely to trade away a blue chip than acquire one.

A’s strategy will be to acquire 3 well scouted players and we will be lucky to have heard of one of em, then we all will agree they got ripped off and then in 3 years all those dudes, or atleast 2, will be contributing to the big league squad

Yeah they will probably get nobodies in the trade and in 5 years we will be wondering how they got such a light return. (See Donaldson Deal) but will pull random guys out of the scrap heap and build a 2025 contender.

The Olson Deal does give me some light optimism however, Langliers looks good and Pache was at least a big name (cant hit unfortunately)

Since Murphy is one of the best defensive catchers in baseball his cost will still be very high in prospects coming to the A’s. They A’s have a need for a 3B or 1B prospect so you would think some team would have a prospect at that position being blocked to trade.

Id argue that first and Third are maybe the only spots the A’s have prospect depth, (Gelof and probably Soderstrom) what they really need are some young arms with more upside that can help them in 2024 or 2025

They haven’t had a projected Ace since Luzardo and currently have no young starters that project as more than a mid-rotation piece

Did they move Soderstrom to 1B? His defense was below par behind the plate. Only problem with pitchers for the A’s they seem to always get injured ones.

Soderstom has mostly played 1rst this year. I don’t think they have totally given up on him as a catcher. However with the other depth at the position it’s probably better to get his bat in the lineup every day as a 1st baseman maybe making the occasional start at catcher in a backup or third catcher role to keep his knees fresh.

I agree that A’s pitchers always get hurt but they need an Ace. That has been the critical flaw in every playoff run this past decade. They need a true #1 to win them Wildcard games!

The Dodgers have a better catcher for sure. And Contreras, while known to be a bat-first receiver, has improved defensively. He doesn’t frame well, but has a very strong arm & quick release and I love his passion and fire. He wants to win so badly.Kirk is better than Murphy all-aroilund IMO too. Boston has a guy who is at least as good. I could go on but you get my point.

Thats still valuable in todays game, at least until robo umps and no more pitch framing

That’s a strange take. The AL OPS as a whole is 7.01. Murphy is at .717. So Murphy is not just above average for a catcher, he is above average period.

I disagree that a catcher’s value will drop if robo-umps are instituted. The catcher’s most important role is pitch-calling, and working with the pitcher. There’s also the need to control the running game, blocking pitches in the dirt, fielding bunts, (even if they’re unintentional), and controlling the pace of the game. And it’s not limited to that.

Watching games, I see plenty of borderline pitches that would be called strikes by a robo-ump, that are otherwise called balls. What might get lost by a good framing catcher, will probably made up by all those pitches that nick the zone at the corners and edges. There may be a small loss for the good framing catcher, but I don’t think anything more than minimal.

Well the average catcher this year is batting .223/.293/.363 with a .290 wOBA and 86 wRC+. Murphy having a .241/.308/.409 line, .311 wOBA, and 106 wRC+ makes him well above average in terms of the average catcher. He also has a .352 xwOBA, so there might be more there that he can unlock. Regardless, nobody is acquiring Murphy for his batting. Him being slightly above league average is just icing on top of the +5.4 framing runs he’s had this year.

People here need to stop judging Catchers by their offensive stats. Catcher is the most important position on a MLB team, and offense has next to nothing to do with their value; nor does the silly pitch framing stat that every Catcher now does.

The Orioles started taking off this year a few weeks after Adley Rutschman was called up and got himself acclimated to the pitching staff, and a bit to hitting against ML pitchers. This is no coincidence. His offensive stats are .222 / .302 /.420 /.722. They don’t begin to measure his impact on that teams W-L record.

No stats of any kind truly measure a Catchers impact – good or bad – on his team.

Imo, as long as your catcher isn’t alarmingly bad at the plate and provides good deefnse, then you’re good to go. Even then, you can get by with alarmingly bad offense as long as they’re in the upper-level of defensive catchers. Just look at the Guardians. They have Luke Maile and Austin Hedges sharing time behind the plate. They both have an OPS below .600 (heck, Hedges is below .500), but are both considered great defenders.

          Disagree.

A Catcher run the staff. He oversees the defense. He calls every pitch. He looks at the other 8 players on every pitch, and they at him.

His job is far, far more important than simply not making errors. He has to attend the daily meetings and know both the hitting and baserunning tendencies of every position player on the other team. He needs to know what the manager and coaching staff want to do with each player. He needs to know the game situation and how to approach it.

This reminds me of when Michael Wanca won the final game of the WS in his rookie year. A reporter asked him in the dressing room how he knew so much regarding pitching to the opposition. He replied: “My teammates told me to throw the pitch Yadi calls and hit his mitt. That’s what I did”.

And people on here look at Yadi’s offensive stats and don’t understand why most inside the game hold him in elite esteem.

Well provides good defense, I mean more than just blocking, catching runners trying to steal, and framing. Really anything with game calling and other stuff where you can’t put a specific measurement on is ‘catcher defense’ to me.

Also, I think you’re confused on Wacha. Cards didn’t win the World Series that year. I think you’re talking about the game that sent them to the World Series.

No stats of any kind truly measure a Catchers impact
          ===========================
If you want an even better example, look at Stephenson. The Reds are 21-24 when he starts, and 13-33 when he is out. It’s not linear, since there were other injuries, but being able to slot a catcher in at the 5-slot makes the lineup a whole lot better,

Hi Samuel – IF there were a stat that accurately gauged a player’s contribution to team wins (which is the end goal and purpose of playing), Maldonado would be a perennial 8 WAR player. I LOVE Trout – but Maldy is more important by that definition to his team, than Trout is to his own.

An important observation that most fans should remember when discussing catching options. But rest assured, most fans will quickly forget Samuel’s excellent advice to ignore a catcher’s offensive contributions in favor of their less obvious ones.

Teams like Cleveland have long prioritized defense in their catchers, with team results that are self explanatory. Sean Murphy is a catcher with exemplary defensive tools, but Cleveland looks to be satisfied by who is manning catcher right now, Bo Naylor could be one of those rare prospects who is worth waiting for….and why blocking him by acquiring Sean Murphy doesn’t make a lot of sense.

Exactly this. A few comments above mentioned how Vogt is a “terrible” catcher. Perhaps by accountant’s standards, but by pitchers LOVE him, teammates love him, and he makes your pitching staff better with his pitch calling and game control. All this is immeasurable by sabermetrics.

Dayton Moore of the Royals said a few years ago that there are less quality Catchers in MLB than quality QB’s in the NFL. I believe he’s correct.

Many MLB teams today stockpile SS’s on the theory that they can also play multiple positions – INF and OF – in the future; which they can use or another team will find attractive enough to trade for.

The A’s are smart to stockpile and develop Catchers. In fact, quality ones are worth far more in trade than SS’s due to the scarcity.

        I like that anecdote.

The difference is that a good QBs impact on the game is far greater than a good C.

Catchers are so volatile (this is purely my opinion) and have such short careers that I feel investing in them isn’t the greatest strategy when building up prospect capital

That’s probably true about the first 3 you mentioned, but the Giants have more than enough prospect capital to acquire Murphy, if they wanted him.

The Giant’s farm system is ranked 9th by Keith Law, 11th by MLB, and 15th by Fangraphs. They have 5 top 100 prospects.

The don’t need Murphy though. Bart looks like he’s turning it around, .276/.344/.522 with 2 HRs in his last 32 PAs. Even if he can’t sustain that, they aren’t going to give up on him this early. Plus they also have Patrick Bailey, with an FV of 50.

I disagree with MLBTR that either Contreras or Murphy are a fit for the Giants.

The A’s have their own prospect “rankings” that look nothing like Laws or anyone else’s list and they have never cared about public rankings. All teams mentioned above surely have enough to land Murphy if they desire him.

Mets won’t Bc they have a young stud on verge of bigs.

Cards are a great fit though ! A Winn or mcgreevy headliner w hence as a second piece would be a great grab for A’s.

Agree. The A’s and every team have their own prospect rankings. Trouble is we don’t know them. All we have is Law, and the others, to go by, as incorrect as they may be.

You’re right, all those teams do have enough, but what I meant is how much of their depth are they willing to lose. I doubt they’d do what it would take.

But agree also about the Cards. Seems like a perfect fit, so it probably wont happen.

The Guardians may need a Catcher, preferably a younger player that will fit in with all their young position players They’ve been waiting on Naylor, but who knows if he’d be ready next year.

The Phillies badly want a payoff spot this year and are close. Their SS play has gone downhill along with Didi. Meanwhile Amad Rosario is having another fine year with Cleveland, playing a solid SS and slashing .291 / .327 / .403 / .730 along with 13 stolen bases (caught 0 times). Cleveland has an excess of fine young SS’s/ 2B’s, and will probably move Rosario at the deadline or in the offseason.

If the Phillies were open to dealing Garrett Stubbs that would work. Might have to blow out the trade a little to assure the Phillies had a backup to Realmuto.

Murphy is an elite level defensive catcher who hits above big league average so way above average for a catcher. Oh and he’s not even a free agent until 2026. Murphy has a ton of value.

Having a really good defensive catcher that all your pitchers want to throw to is so valuable. He is one of the top 3 defensive catchers in the league. As I Boston fan I wish they would trade for him. He is far superior defensively to Vasquez he is who I want my high dollar pitching staff throwing to. I would trade Casas, Duran and Groome for him. I’m sure that Bloom wouldn’t do that but I want the best catcher I can get to be my catcher. It’s no coincidence that the Orioles surge happened when Adley came up and absolutely superior defensive catcher.

He wouldn’t cost too much in prospect capital although catching is as embarrassing as it gets in baseball as a whole right now and Murphy is prob well into the better half of that group. A’s don’t really have a ton of reason to move him but they sure can afford to lose him with what’s behind him. That said, what prob would have cost a lower tier “top 30” organizational prospects (ie the Braves 25-30th rank prospect in a hypothetical situation), I’d imagine it’s a bit higher now. Like 10-20 or maybe 2 of those guy of that caliber. I’d say that’s reasonable and cheap. But who knows…

I’m not sure the Guardians really need Murphy as they have Bo Naylor coming up. I also think for them they would be smart to wait. Murphy’s price goes down as his club control dwindles, they’re not truly contenders this season. If they wait until the offseason, they can get him for less and load up next year. The risk to that strategy is that someone snaps him up first.
