Blue Jays Acquire Foster Griffin From Royals For Jonatan Bernal

By TC Zencka | July 16, 2022 at 10:28am CDT

The Blue Jays and Royals have agreed to a trade this morning, per Jon Morosi of the MLB Network (via Twitter). Toronto will send right-hander Jonatan Bernal to the Royals for southpaw Foster Griffin.

The Blue Jays have sent Griffin to Triple-A. The southpaw made five appearances in the bigs with the Royals, yielding six earned runs across 4 1/3 innings. He has a 1.93 ERA across 28 innings in Triple-A, however.

The Blue Jays also recalled Jeremy Beasley from Triple-A and designated veteran Sergio Romo for assignment, per Keegan Matheson of MLB.com (via Twitter). The 39-year-old Romo made six appearances with the Jays after being cut loose by the Mariners. He fared better in Toronto, though the underlying metrics tell a fairly similar tale. Beasley, 26, has made six appearances for the Bue Jays totaling 10 innings of work with a 6.30 ERA.

For the Royals, this is a sort of paying-it-forward deal, where they pick up a younger arm in Bernal in exchange for a near-ML-ready arm in Griffin. Bernal, 20, has a 5.47 ERA across 52 2/3 innings in Single-A this season, where he is a couple of years younger than the average player.

Romo was done before the waste of time to try him out in Toronto and that was all said in these pages. Beasely is not a MLB caliber pitcher either.

This is shifting deck chairs on the titanic.

Shapiro and Atkins need to be removed from making baseball personnel decisions for the Toronto BlueJays unless of course we expect another 7 years of developing only one starting pitcher and only a few relievers. Edward Rogers, are you listening? Oh wait, if the Rogers network is down maybe you can’t see this comment.

While I was very negative at the beginning, I would disagree with very few moves by Shapkins and I think they have done an awesome job. Sure I wish and believe they should be on the Yankees tear this year but our window is very long and we have some of the best talent in MLB – they have done a great job drafting and developing and have won pretty much all of their trades plus they have got ownership to spend – which is very surprising

He seems to need treatment for yips and hitting the strike zone.

Looks like a curious case of a pitcher was starting all his career and struggling, he only started relieving this year and did well in the minors — really well. Then gets his look at the major league level and looks entirely unprepared for the moment.

Former first round pick, has talent there. Classic change of scenery candidate to get his career on track. Pretty worthwhile gamble by the looks of it.

Foster pitched really, really well in his debut on his birthday only to find out he blew his UCL in that game. Just to have made it back is an accomplishment. He’s not going to be a game changer for anyone, but I expect him to be a guy that keeps finding his way into big league rosters as the 6th or 7th guy in a bullpen. Royals got a lottery ticket for him.

Simply a depth piece to have in triple A for the inevitable trades of the stronger arms down there for help at the deadline.

Lol. Jimmer also complained when they drafted Manoah, an older college arm vs highschool arms, and called him a back of the end starter at best. So safe to just dismiss his opinions.

No I didn’;t complain when they drafted Manoah. And I said that he would be a #3 and occasionally pitch as a #2. We are seeing that now as the innings pile up and his performance drops off as the season progresses.

You and the cronies that agree with you wouldn’t know how to scout a ballplayer to save your lives.

yes you did, maybe not slag the guy, but you did. about the only thing you’ve been dead-on about, has been the undervaluing/dumpster diving for bullpen parts, but, Helen Keller would have been able to decipher that much, so by all means keep patting yourself on the back.

It’s not often that you see a guy get DFAed despite only allowing 1 hit and 2 walks over 3 2/3 innings.
