Mets Sign Deven Marrero To Minor League Deal

By Anthony Franco | July 5, 2022 at 10:21pm CDT

The Mets signed Deven Marrero to a minor league contract last week (h/t to Chris Hilburn-Trenkle of Baseball America). The infielder was assigned to Triple-A Syracuse, where he’s made four appearances thus far.

Marrero, 31, is a former first-round pick of the Red Sox. He debuted in Boston in 2015 and spent parts of three seasons there, tallying a career-high 188 plate appearances in 2017. The right-handed hitter appeared in 49 games — primarily as a defensive replacement — for the 2018 Diamondbacks and saw sporadic action in parts of two seasons with the Marlins. That included ten games with Miami last season; Marrero made appearances on whenever the need for a depth infielder arose but found himself quickly outrighted off the roster each time.

At the end of last season, Marrero qualified for minor league free agency. He spent the first couple months of the 2022 campaign with the Long Island Ducks of the independent Atlantic League, hitting .238/.330/.300 through 194 trips to the plate. That’s obviously not an overwhelming showing, but Marrero has continued to get opportunities at the upper levels on the strength of his defensive versatility. He’s played more than 4500 minor league innings at shortstop and also has a fair bit of experience at each of third and second base.

Marrero will add some experienced non-roster infield insurance to the upper minors for the Mets. He owns a .194/.250/.284 line through parts of six MLB seasons and is a career .230/.291/.334 hitter in Triple-A.

Enough with the minor league depth pieces. Concern yourself with the major league roster. You have a chance to win this year please don’t waste it. Scherzer strikes out 11 and is flawless and we get 0 runs for him. Doesn’t matter if him and degrom dominate if this inconsistent lineup doesn’t produce. Degrom has experience with that have 9 million no decisions or losses in games he shouldn’t of lost. Get to work eppler and get the job done like braves at trade deadline last year. Can’t win this lineup and bullpen!

How is it that for every extremely minor move that any team makes, there’s always some bozo who finds something wrong with it?

It’s minor league depth. That’s it. Do you think they had the entire front office spending weeks on this and nothing else? “Enough with the minor league depth pieces”? Do you understand how baseball works?

@ bk11235 2 each MLB team does need to keep full rosters for their minor league teams, they have injuries and roster needs too. The minor leagues aren’t filled with prospects, there are plenty of roster fillers. Nothing wrong if that is all Marrero is.

Actually Alonso has been putting up Devon Marerro numbers the last 7-9 games or so. What happened to trying to tear the pitcher’s head off in batting practice, ripping the ball back thru the box when you are in a slump? Lindor looks like he is trying to home runs when a line drive single would drive in two. The Mets were winning just getting hit after hit without long balls. Doubles up the gap. An clear bases too. It just seems the batters are overthinking it. Relax at the plate and just drive the ball.

@easternleagueveteran, you are spot on. Halfway through the season and the Mets are averaging the same runs scored per game as the homer happy Braves. The Mets just do it stringing together hits……and it’s working, they have 50 wins!

LOL Mets! The FO is fiddling while the MLB Club Crashes and Burns.

The Owner stopped spending $ when he approached the Cohen Tax and they didn’t finish the Job. No DH ( Cano, Dom Smith, & JD Davis ) Big LOL. They are a few pieces short of a contender after spending $ 290 MM. Sad DH, Catcher, 3B, and RP are Huge Holes.

The Mets still have The fourth best record in all of baseball right now. All the games count, even the ones right after Spring Training ends. Baseball is more of a marathon, not a sprint. Pushing the panic button right now is the wrong thing to do. The trade deadline is still weeks away, and you don’t necessarily know which player who would be an upgrade that isn’t available now would be available July 27 or after. A little extra batting practice couldn’t hurt, though.

Useless signing, I’m pretty sure there are a couple of players in the minors who could do a similar or better job than him.

It’s a long season. And true, the Braves are a well oiled machine built to win now. Big challenge ahead Metropolitans. That said, if any “captain” can keep the ship afloat and sailing during heavy seas, it’s Buck. Advantage Mets! When in Baltimore he was a master at moving helping “pieces” back n forth between Baltimore and AAA. Is Marrero a minor league depth guy, probably but don’t be surprised if he gets a call up.

Deven Marrero has never been able to hit, so this should be short term, and then the inevitable DFA.

The absolute only way he sticks is if the Mets have no one that can play multiple infield positions well defensively as a late inning substitute, and I highly doubt that is the case.

He’s not on the 40-man, it’s just a minor league deal.

This dude is a dreadful hitter, but I’ll never forget that game where he hit a pair of 3-run shots against prime Jose Quintana. That just came out of absolutely nowhere.

Ahhh, I love me some Deven Marrero threads.

Did he get called up and DFA-ed 5 minutes later yet…so he can get called up again and DFA-ed again in a few days?
