Braves Claim Jesse Chavez Off Waivers From Angels

By Darragh McDonald | August 30, 2022 at 2:25pm CDT

The Braves announced that they have claimed right-hander Jesse Chavez off waivers from the Angels.

Chavez, 39, is no stranger to switching jerseys, having played for the Pirates, Braves, Royals, Blue Jays, Athletics, Dodgers, Angels, Rangers and Cubs in his career, having returned to many of those clubs for a second or even third stint. 2022 has been no exception, as the veteran hurler began the season with the Cubs, but has since been traded twice, going to the Braves and then the Angels. He was released by the Halos yesterday and now returns to Atlanta for the second time this season.

Between those three clubs, he’s thrown 54 2/3 innings with a 3.62 ERA, 25.6% strikeout rate, 6.8% walk rate and 37.2% ground ball rate. His best stretch of the year was definitely with Atlanta, though, as he has a 2.11 ERA as a Brave while registering marks of 6.35 with the Cubs and 7.59 with the Angels.

The club already had a vacancy on their 40-man roster, meaning a corresponding move won’t be necessary. Placing him on the activer roster should be smooth as well, since rosters expand from 26 to 28 on September 1. Players claimed off waivers generally have three days to report to their new club, meaning Chavez can just join the club on Thursday and take one of the fresh spots.

Least surprising thing in Sports today. How long until he’s putting up All Star numbers in Atlanta again?

The Braves literally got in trouble cheating a few years ago for the shady amateur spending habits both on the international scale and their draftees

And that leadership was fired and banned for life. Saying that a previous GM cheated and calling the Braves a cheating organization don’t quite equate.

Oh the horror.. Atlanta overpaid their players years ago and lost every single one of them for it. How sad it must be for other teams to know the Braves lost roughly 5 years of international prospects out of that and are still out developing their competition.

Yeah that is the crazy thing MLB throws the book at the Braves for over paying international players but its a slap on the wrist at best for Houston cheating in games. Also if you go in look at most of those players the Braves over paid none are doing that great with the minor league teams they signed with so really wasn’t a sure thing they would become pros.

And yet people still witch moan and complain about the Astros.

The Braves also didn’t loose every one of their players and who knows how many years that it went on.

There are cheaters, and there are teams that bring in cheaters.

If you don’t bring in cheaters, and you get rid of the cheaters, you’re ok in my book.

Imagine how much fun watching Judge would be right now without the cheating of McGwire, Bonds and Sosa. They “jerks” stole from everyone.

Coppolella was only there from 2015 to 2017, and he was fully busted. The Braves lost 13 prospects, and were essentially banned from international signings for several years. The Astros got away with a slap on the wrist, and no players were punished.

Still pissed at the NHL players for their lockout in fact. As for the Iron Man, he might be the best player ever so you’ll never hear me say anything remotely negative about him. This is why we gotta pull hard for the guys that are doing it right. Fans shouldnt be punished merely for not knowing what was going on behind the scenes. Not every fan knew. Some people like to believe the best in others until proven otherwise. Personally, I was too young/naive to understand it or see it back then. That’s why when I see scrawny little fellas like Mookie and Trey T. crush 400+ foot bombs I am perpetually impressed.

Braves have the 4th best record in baseball. 26 other teams had a chance to make a waiver claim on Chavez. Claims of this type happen frequently. Don’t hear anyone crying because the Jays just claimed Bradley Zimmer for the second time this season.

Google “Salary Dump”. The Angels would have traded for a 4 week old Snickers bar to get out of that Iglesias contract. Jesse was an obvious release and Davidson is icing on the cake. With Perry’s ATL ties, my guess this was all part of the plan.

Correct Angels got out of a long term deal with a closer that was clearly not going to pay off for them seeing they never compete. They did get Davidson who was ranked pretty high in Braves farms system and maybe a starter or guy out of pen one day. In 4 starts for Angels he is 1-2 with 5.21 era with 19 innings not great but for his career over 3 season has only 12 total starts.

Braves pen has been shaky lately. It got exposed by the Cardinals. In game two of the series, Kenley Jansen’s FB wasn’t generating swings and misses and he couldn’t find the plate with his offspeed stuff. I don’t care what his numbers are this year, whenever I see that kind of meltdown by a RP, red lights start flashing. Braves need more production from Acuna. Olsen is a fine player, but he’s still a downgrade from Freeman.
