Blue Jays Acquire Mitch White From Dodgers

By Steve Adams | August 2, 2022 at 4:54pm CDT

The Blue Jays and Dodgers have agreed to a trade sending righty Mitch White from Los Angeles to Toronto in exchange for minor league pitchers, tweets FanSided’s Robert Murray. The teams have since announced the trade, with White and minor league infielder Alex De Jesus headed to Toronto in exchange for minor league righty Nick Frasso and minor league lefty Moises Brito.

White, 27, has been an up-and-down member of the Dodgers’ staff for the past couple seasons, generally pitching well when with the big league club but never getting a consistent, long-term spot in the rotation or in the bullpen. He’s logged 38 games, 14 of them starts, from 2020-22 and recorded a sturdy 3.58 ERA with a 22% strikeout rate, 8.3% walk rate and a 42.8% ground-ball rate in 105 2/3 innings.

A second-round pick back in 2016, White had a hiccup in his first run at the Triple-A level in 2019 but has generally fared well both there (six earned runs in 43 2/3 innings) and in the Majors over the past two seasons. White is in his final minor league option season, so he’ll need to stick on the Jays’ roster in 2023 and beyond. He’ll presumably be a back-of-the-rotation candidate, though he could also emerge in a role held by fellow Dodger-turned-Blue-Jay Ross Stripling, serving as a long man and spot starter. (Stripling, of course, has since moved into the Toronto rotation.)

The 20-year-old De Jesus, meanwhile, ranked 18th among Dodger farmhands on Baseball America’s midseason update, drawing praise for his plus arm, above-average power and a potentially average hit tool. De Jesus has split the 2022 season between Class-A and Class-A Advanced, hitting at a combined .272/.386/.447 clip with 11 homers, 20 doubles and three triples. He’s sporting an unsightly 28.6% strikeout rate but also an encouraging 14.9% walk rate.

Frasso, a fourth-rounder in 2020, was the Jays’ No. 13 prospect on Baseball America’s summer rankings. He boasts an outstanding 0.74 ERA with a 41.6% strikeout rate and 7.3% walk rate in 36 2/3 innings split across two Class-A levels. The former Loyola Marymount right-hander has primarily faced younger competition thus far, so he’s not yet tested against more advanced hitters, but it’s an impressive stat line nevertheless. Frasso had Tommy John surgery in 2021 and has thusly had his workloads limited in his return effort, but the 6’5″ righty has reached triple digits with his heater and gives the Dodgers a power arm to dream on.

There’s little in the way of public info on Brito, a 20-year-old righty who’s just 12 games into his first professional season. He’s slightly older than his average competition in the Dominican Summer League, but his 1.86 ERA and gaudy 32-to-1 K/BB ratio through 29 innings of work stand out.

I was thinking the same thing. Sturdy if unspectacular spot starter who keeps you in most games. Jays could have done worse. Dodgers never did give him long looks at the major league level, but with the offense of the Jays White could prove to be an underrated deadline find for them.

What’s Friedman doing? Mitch White reminded me of the type of 5th starter/long relief pitcher in the mold of Stripling or Gonsolin when they first came up. Should’ve kept him around for a few more years while he’s still cheap.

My guess is that White was pissed about getting sent down again. This was a way for him to grow since he wasn’t going to be a top option in future. Probably would be out of options for sending him down soon with how many times he has been up and down.

Buehler hasn’t been healthy yet this season. We should know that now. Whether he comes back strong we don’t know but the very fact that the Dodgers did not panic about him should be a big clue.

I understand why they had to shave off the 40 man roster but White provided a safety net SP for rest of season in case Heaney got hurt again or Kershaw has to go the IL. No guarantees that May and Buehler come back fully healed and no guarantee that they come back to peak level performance. I’d rather have White. The concern is for this season, so Miller, Pepiot or Stone are not going to give you much help this season. There are other guys they could have moved, like Moronta, Reed, Grove, or even Bruihl.

Fair enough. I just hope that the Dodgers can get to full strength before the playoffs. It’s going to be a war against the Padres in the playoffs. You figure that the Dodgers should be able to hold them off during the season but they’ll likely finish in the top 2 non-division slots, which means a potential second round showdown if the Dodgers have the best record in the NL. Should be at least exciting.

It was an underwhelming deadline to be sure, but you are so far off on your assessment of the pitching staff. If they werent going to pony up the cost to acquire Castillo or Montas, a swingman was the only piece they needed for rotation depth. White is not a bad pitcher at all, you clearly havent watched him pitch.

Really feel like the pitching is lacking, don’t trust stripling or Kikuchi at all and our pen only has 3 reliable guys (Romano, Garcia and Bass). Hope White can help, he deserves a fair chance at least.

I really like Mitch White, good pick up for the Jays. They went under the radar with their pickups, and didn’t give up too much by the looks of it. If you put Syndergaard and White’s number side by side, they’re pretty close. Small sample of course, but White has a sub 3.50 ERA this year as a starter, and comes with 5 more years of control.

Meanwhile, 20 year old rookie-ball lefty reliever Moises Brito, with a stunning 32-1 BB:K ratio in 25 innings (baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=bri…), is also coming to LA. Puzzling TD for LAD- I liked the little movement but man Lamb and White were legit MLB players helping the roster today –

They had to clear 40’s, something that was ALWAYS going to be hard and unrealized by most who thought we would bringing a buncha people in via trade

But still Gallo and Martin for Lamb White Beeter and McKinstry ?? I didn’t think we had to drastically improve but get worse and lose a top 15 prospect? Strange strange strange but again the 40 problem was probably a lot more complex than any of us know

I’ll still take this TD over spending Big on Soto or Pablo but it’s hard to come out of glowing

I like the guys they got for Mitch White. And Rios is returning soon, plus the presence of Outman and Thompson made Lamb expendable even before Gallo. Lamb is a crappy defender everywhere with a sky-high K%. Martin is an intriguing project, and that’s all they really need.

The return for White looks decent but I can’t help wondering if they couldn’t have brought back a better reliever than Martin for some combo of Beeter, McKinstry, Lamb and White. Maybe the moves just weren’t out there. I agree 100% on not overpaying for Soto or Lopez.

Dodgers have May, Buehler, Duffy, Kahnle, Treinen and Rios all in the 60-day. Any of them coming back requires a 40-man spot. They are anticipating a roster crunch very soon. Having said that, White has played an important role on this team this year – undervalued role, so it is a loss.

Frasso and Brito are definition of projects. But their arms are really good and could be worth the work (and wait) for the Dodgers. Chances are they never pan out. Mitch White is a MLB pitcher now and the Jays needed a SP (probably needed someone better than White frankly). White has played a big role on the Dodgers this year – Blue Jays taking advantage of Dodgers roster crunch.
