Mitch White

Mitch White Signs With KBO League’s SSG Landers

The SSG Landers announced that right-hander Mitch White has agreed to a one-year, $1MM contract with the Korea Baseball Organization team.  White elected to become a minor league free agent at season’s end, after he was previously outrighted off the Brewers’ 40-man roster back in June.

A second-round pick for the Dodgers in the 2016 draft, White drew some top-100 attention during his time in the Los Angeles farm system, and he cracked the big leagues during the shortened 2020 campaign.  White posted a 3.58 ERA, 22.02% strikeout rate, and 8.31% walk rate over 105 2/3 innings with the Dodgers from 2020-22, working as either starter or reliever based on the team’s needs.

L.A. often shuttled White back and forth between Triple-A and the majors as part of this swingman role, and ultimately found him expendable enough to be dealt to the Blue Jays at the 2022 trade deadline.  The deal seemingly derailed White’s career, as the right-hander has badly struggled against MLB hitters since leaving the Dodgers organization.  He posted a 7.74 ERA in 43 innings for the Jays for the rest of the 2022 season, and a 7.18 ERA in 36 1/3 innings since Opening Day 2023.

White’s 2024 workload of 23 2/3 innings was split between Toronto, San Francisco, and Milwaukee.  The Giants picked White up from the Jays after Toronto designated him for assignment in April, and the Brewers acquired him a few weeks later after the Giants also sent him to DFA limbo.  White’s only time in the minor leagues was spent with the Brewers’ Triple-A affiliate, and his numbers (4.06 ERA, 27.2% strikeout rate, and 8.8% walk rate) were at least a marked improvement over his time in the Show.

Since White’s chances of landing a guaranteed contract from a Major League team this winter weren’t great, the move to South Korea allows White (who turns 30 in December) the opportunity to lock in a seven-figure salary.  A strong showing with the Landers could put White back onto the radar for MLB teams next offseason, if he has interest in making a fairly quick return to North American baseball.  Playing in the KBO League also some additional personal appeal to White, whose mother is Korean.

34 Players Elect Free Agency

As the offseason nears, a number of players elect minor league free agency each week. These players are separate from six-year MLB free agents, who’ll reach the open market five days after the conclusion of the World Series. Eligible minor leaguers can begin electing free agency as soon as the regular season wraps up. These players were all outrighted off a team’s 40-man roster during the year and have the requisite service time and/or multiple career outrights necessary to reach free agency since they weren’t added back to teams’ rosters.

Electing free agency is the anticipated outcome for these players. There’ll surely be more to test the market in the coming weeks. We’ll offer periodic updates at MLBTR. These transactions are all reflected on the MiLB.com log.

Brewers Outright Mitch White

Brewers right-hander Mitch White went unclaimed on outright waivers and has been assigned to Triple-A Nashville, reports Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. He’s been outrighted once in the past, so he’ll have the opportunity to reject the assignment in favor of free agency, if he prefers to look for opportunities elsewhere.

The Brewers acquired White from the Giants in exchange for cash last month. San Francisco had also designated the right-hander for assignment prior to that swap. White made six appearances with the Brewers, pitching 8 1/3 innings and yielding six earned runs on eight hits and four walks (two of them intentional). He punched out six batters. On the season as a whole, White has tossed 23 2/3 innings and been roughed up for a 7.23 ERA between the Blue Jays, Giants and Brewers. He’s fanned just 11.8% of his opponents against a matching 11.8% walk rate.

Once a prospect of note within the Dodgers organization, the now-29-year-old White has pitched in parts of five big league seasons. The 2016 second-rounder had a nice early-career run in L.A. but has struggled since being traded away from Los Angeles. In 105 2/3 frames as a Dodger, White recorded a 3.58 ERA with a 22% strikeout rate and 8.3% walk rate. He’s since pitched to a 5.45 ERA with a diminished 17.7% strikeout rate between the Blue Jays, Giants and Brewers.

If he accepts his outright assignment, he’ll stick with the Brewers organization and suit up for their Triple-A affiliate, the Nashville Sounds, while hoping to pitch his way back into another major league opportunity. If he opts to test free agency, he’ll likely find some interest on minor league deals from clubs seeking to stockpile experienced pitching depth.

Brewers Designate Mitch White For Assignment

The Brewers announced Thursday that right-hander Mitch White has been designated for assignment. His spot on the active roster goes to righty Kevin Herget, who has been recalled from Triple-A Nashville.

Milwaukee acquired White from the Giants in exchange for cash just under three weeks ago. San Francisco had also designated the right-hander for assignment prior to that swap. White made six appearances with the Brewers, pitching 8 1/3 innings and yielding six earned runs on eight hits and four walks (two of them intentional). He punched out six batters. Brewers Acquire Mitch White From Giants

The Giants have traded right-hander Mitch White, who they designated for assignment earlier this week, to the Brewers for cash considerations. Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com relayed the information on X. Right-hander Corbin Martin was designated for assignment to open a roster spot for White, per Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on X.

White, 29, was acquired by the Giants from the Blue Jays a few weeks ago in a cash deal. He tossed 5 1/3 innings for San Francisco but allowed seven earned runs in that time. He had also allowed six earned runs in ten innings for the Jays earlier in the year, so he currently has a combined 7.63 earned run average on the year.

He is out of options and can’t be easily sent down to the minors, which is why he has been designated for assignment twice already this year. But despite the rough start to his season, there are reasons for the Brewers to be interested.

He was once a notable prospect with the Dodgers, with Baseball America ranking him one of their 20 best prospects in five straight years starting in 2017. He pitched 105 2/3 innings for the Dodgers from 2020 to 2022 with a 3.58 ERA, 22% strikeout rate and 8.3% walk rate.

But he hit a rough patch after being traded to the Jays in 2022. He had a 7.74 ERA in 43 innings for Toronto late that year. He wasn’t helped by a .368 batting average on balls in play or 54.3% strand rate, as his 3.76 FIP and 4.70 SIERA were far nicer in that time, but he still went into last year out of options and battling for a role.

He spent time on the injured list in 2023 and then posted poor results out of the bullpen for the Jays in 2023, getting outrighted off the roster. But once in Triple-A, he was stretched back out and finished the year strong. His last seven starts resulted in a 1.89 ERA in 33 1/3 innings, striking out 31.4% of batters faced.

The Jays added him back to their roster to keep him from reaching minor league free agency but, as mentioned, his results haven’t been great here in 2024. Still, there’s enough there for the Brewers to take a chance.

Perhaps he will take over a long relief role in the bullpen, as injuries have pushed Bryse Wilson from that job and into the rotation. White still has less than three years of service time and can be cheaply retained into the future if he keeps justifying his roster spot, though it’s also possible he could be designated for assignment for a third time this year.

Martin, 28, was claimed off waivers from the Diamondbacks last month. Both clubs kept him in the minors and he has a 7.20 ERA in ten innings between their two Triple-A clubs this year. He has ten strikeouts but 13 walks on the year.

The Brewers will now have a week to trade him or pass him through waivers. Injuries have been a significant problem for Martin. He missed most of 2019 and all of 2020 while recovering from Tommy John surgery. Then he required lat tendon surgery last year which prevented him from pitching at all in 2023. Though he was healthy enough to pitch in 2021 and 2022, the results weren’t great, with a 7.28 ERA in the majors and a 6.04 ERA in the minors.

He was once a notable prospect in the Astros’ system, going to Arizona in the Zack Greinke trade. He still can be optioned for the rest of this year and could perhaps attract the interest of another club who felt he could get back on track after shaking off some rust.

Giants Select Jakson Reetz, Designate Mitch White For Assignment

The Giants announced a set of roster moves this afternoon including selecting the contract of catcher Jakson Reetz ahead of tonight’s game against the Phillies to take the place of veteran catcher Tom Murphy, who was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left knee sprain. Right-hander Mitch White was designated for assignment to make room for Reetz on the 40-man roster, while righty Daulton Jefferies was recalled to replace White on the active roster. Robert Murray of FanSided first reported Reetz’s selection to the majors, while Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area first suggested that Reetz would be the next man up in the event of an additional roster move.

Reetz, 28, was a third-round pick by the Nationals in the 2014 draft but didn’t make his MLB debut until 2021, when he appeared in two games with the club while filling in for injured veteran Yan Gomes alongside Tres Barrera. He received just two plate appearances at the big league level, going one-for-two with a double before being sent back to the minor leagues. Reetz has not appeared in the majors since then, instead bouncing between the Nationals, Royals, Brewers, and Giants minor league systems.

Despite his lack of MLB opportunities in recent years, Reetz has generally hit quite well at the Triple-A level, particularly for a catcher. He owns a career slash line of .234/.328/.478 in 577 trips to the plate at the level and enjoyed a particularly strong season with the Giants last year, for whom he slashed .243/.342/.500 in 82 games behind the dish.

While Reetz’s strong defensive reputation behind the plate and solid offensive numbers likely would have earned him a look by now in another organization, San Francisco is deep enough behind the plate to have parted ways with former top prospect Joey Bart earlier this season due to a roster crunch. However, with Patrick Bailey on the injured list due to a concussion and Murphy now out with an injury of his own, the Giants are now left to rely on 2023 Rule 5 Draft pick Blake Sabol and Reetz behind the plate for the time being.

As for Murphy, the veteran backstop told reporters (including The Athletic’s Andrew Baggarly) following yesterday’s game that he had “felt a pop” while blocking the ball and was slated to undergo an MRI today. No timetable has been made available for the 33-year-old’s return to action, though even a short absence is a blow the San Francisco given the club’s quickly evaporating depth behind the plate. Murphy signed with the club this past offseason on a two-year, $8.25MM deal to serve as Bailey’s backup but has struggled in the early going this season, slashing just .118/.211/.235 in 13 games. Hopefully, the time on the shelf will offer Murphy a chance to reset ahead of returning to the Giants later on in the season.

As for White, his brief tenure with his hometown team may be coming to an end as the club will have seven days to either trade the right-hander or attempt to pass him through waivers. Should White successfully clear waivers, the Giants would have the opportunity to outright the righty to the minor leagues. The 29-year-old righty once received top-100 prospect buzz as a member of the Dodgers and posted a strong 3.58 ERA in 105 2/3 innings with the club across parts of three seasons but has struggled badly since being traded to the Blue Jays prior to the 2022 trade deadline.

White posted a 7.65 ERA in 24 appearances with the Blue Jays before the club ultimately designated him for assignment earlier this year, at which point he was swapped to the Giants in a cash deal. White’s return to the NL West hasn’t gone well as he’s been lit up for seven runs on eight hits and five walks while striking out just one in 5 1/3 innings of work. Taking his place on the roster will be Jefferies, who allowed 13 runs (nine earned) in 4 2/3 innings with the Giants earlier this season but has settled in at the Triple-A level with a solid 3.44 ERA in 18 1/3 frames since then.

Giants Acquire Mitch White

The Giants have acquired Mitch White from the Blue Jays in exchange for cash considerations, as noted by Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area. Right-hander Alex Cobb was placed on the 60-day injured list to clear a spot for White on the club’s 40-man roster. The move comes on the heels of Toronto designating White for assignment earlier this week to make room for the returns of closer Jordan Romano and right-hander Erik Swanson to the active roster.

White, 29, was a second-round pick by the Dodgers in the 2016 draft and began receiving top-100 prospect buzz prior to the 2018 season, though he ultimately would not make his debut until the shortened 2020 campaign. In three seasons with the Dodgers, White pitched 105 2/3 frames across 38 appearances (14 starts) with the Dodgers and achieved solid results with a 3.58 ERA and 3.87 FIP to go along with a respectable 22% strikeout rate. That early career success didn’t stop the Dodgers from trading White to the Blue Jays at the 2022 trade deadline, however, and he’s struggled badly ever since departing Los Angeles.

In Toronto, White has pitched to a shocking 7.26 ERA despite a fairly average 4.10 FIP in 65 2/3 innings of work in parts of three seasons. While with the Blue Jays, White has seen his strikeout rate plummet to just 16.3% while his walk rate ticked up to 8.9%. The results weren’t any better at the Triple-A level, where White spent most of last season. In 55 2/3 appearances for the club’s affiliate in Buffalo last year, White posted a 5.50 ERA while walking a whopping 12% of batters faced.

Now, White is set to return to the NL West where he can hopefully put his troubles with the Blue Jays behind him. The 29-year-old righty is out of options, meaning the Giants will have to make room for him on their active roster in the coming days. Once he’s officially added to the roster, White figures to provide the Giants with a bullpen arm capable of pitching multiple innings. It’s a role they relied on the likes of Jakob Junis and Keaton Winn for last season prior to the former departing in free agency and the latter joining the club’s starting rotation on a full-time basis.

Making room for White on the 40-man roster is Cobb, who has spent the entire season to this point on the IL after undergoing hip surgery this past offseason. Cobb was initially expected to return to action at some point next month, but as noted recently by John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle, the veteran righty is dealing with something of a setback after developing a “mild” bout of shoulder inflammation in his right arm. Shea adds that an MRI on Cobb’s shoulder came back clean, but evidently the setback was enough for the Giants to be willing to rule Cobb out for almost the entire month of May.

Pavlovic notes that the club plans to be cautious with Cobb’s rehab going forward and that the veteran will now first be eligible to return to the big league club on May 27. That Cobb’s absence will extend at least another month is unfortunate news for San Francisco, as the 36-year-old has been a more reliable arm for the club’s rotation than anyone other than Logan Webb since he joined the team prior to the 2022 season.

Over the past two seasons, Cobb has made 56 starts for the Giants and pitched to a solid 3.80 ERA (107 ERA+) with an even stronger 3.41 FIP in 301 innings of work. The Giants are currently relying on Webb, Blake Snell, Kyle Harrison, Jordan Hicks, and Winn in their starting rotation as things stand, with Winn standing as the most likely candidate to move to the bullpen upon Cobb’s return to action.

Blue Jays Designate Mitch White For Assignment

The Blue Jays announced today that right-handers Jordan Romano and Erik Swanson have been activated off the injured list. In corresponding moves, they optioned righty Nate Pearson to Triple-A and designated righty Mitch White for assignment.

Romano and Swanson were key pieces of the Toronto bullpen last year but they haven’t been able to contribute to the club thus far in 2024. During the spring, Romano had some inflammation in his elbow while Swanson had some tightness in his forearm, leading both to start the season on the injured list.

With those two unavailable, the club has turned to Yimi García and Chad Green for most of the high-leverage work, with those two filling in admirably. García has a 1.17 earned run average through seven appearances, with 11 strikeouts to go with just one walk. Green, meanwhile, has a 2.35 ERA in his seven appearances, with seven punchies and two walks.

Despite that strong work from those two, the Jays are surely glad to get Romano and Swanson back. Romano has emerged as the club’s closer over the past three years, which included saving 36 games in each of the past two campaigns while keeping his ERA under 3.00 in each. Swanson had 29 holds and four saves last year while posting a 2.97 ERA on the season. Those two, along with García and Green, give the Jays a strong four-headed bullpen mix to finish out games.

The health of that group has nudged White off the roster. Now 29, White was a second-round pick of the Dodgers back in 2016 and was considered by Baseball America to be the #69 prospect in the league in 2018. The Jays acquired him in a 2022 deadline deal alongside Alex De Jesus, with prospects Nick Frasso and Moises Brito going the other way.

At the time of that deal, White had thrown 105 2/3 big league innings with a 3.58 ERA, 22% strikeout rate and 8.3% walk rate. Unfortunately, the jersey swap corresponded with an immediate downturn in his results. White tossed 43 innings for the Jays in 2022 with a 7.74 ERA and 15.3% strikeout rate. There was a bit of bad luck in there, as his .368 batting average on balls in play and 54.3% strand rate were both on the unfortunate side, which is why his FIP was 3.76 in that time and his SIERA 4.70.

Luck or not, the poor results meant the Jays couldn’t guarantee a rotation spot to White going into 2023. At that time, four rotation spots were taken by Alek Manoah, Kevin Gausman, José Berríos and Chris Bassitt. White went into Spring Training battling Yusei Kikuchi for the final spot but dealt with some shoulder and elbow injuries and had to start the season on the IL. By the time he got back, there was no rotation spot for him and he worked a long relief role in the bullpen.

He didn’t take to that move, posting a 7.11 ERA in 10 outings before being designated for assignment. The 29 other clubs passed on the chance to grab him off waivers and he was sent outright to Triple-A. He got stretched out in Buffalo and finished the season in good form, with a 1.89 ERA over his last 33 1/3 innings, pairing a 31.4% strikeout rate in that time with a 10.2% walk rate.

The Jays added him back to the 40-man in November to prevent him from reaching minor league free agency, which put him in a similar spot to where he was a year prior, coming into spring out of options and battling for a spot. The Jays had to put Manoah on the IL this spring, which opened a rotation spot, but Bowden Francis beat White for that gig. Now that Yariel Rodríguez has also been stretched out and has seemingly bumped Francis from the rotation, White has been moved even further back. He has only made four long relief appearances this year but his uninspiring 5.40 ERA in those surely didn’t help him.

White has now been bumped off the roster yet again and the Jays will have one week to work out a trade or pass him through waivers. Since he cleared waivers last year, doing so again would give him the right to elect free agency. It’s possible he may garner interest based on his past results and strong finish at Triple-A last year. The fact that he’s out of options means that he needs an active roster spot somewhere, but he has less than three years of service time, meaning he can be controlled for three more seasons beyond this one.

A number of teams around the league are dealing with significant pitching injuries and it was less than a week ago that the Jays managed to flip Wes Parsons to the Guardians for international bonus pool space. Parsons is optionable but is more than two years older than White and doesn’t have the same past prospect pedigree.

Blue Jays Acquire Brendon Little, Select Mitch White

The Cubs have traded left-handed pitcher Brendon Little to the Blue Jays in exchange for cash considerations, the Blue Jays announced. The 27-year-old has been selected to the 40-man. Right-hander Mitch White has also been added back to Toronto’s 40-man roster.

Little is a former first-round pick. The southpaw has the briefest of MLB résumés, consisting of a single relief appearance for the Cubs in 2022 (at Rogers Centre as a COVID substitute). He averaged 94.5 MPH on his sinker in that game but allowed three runs while recording two outs.

The Pennsylvania native spent this past season in Triple-A, working to a 4.05 ERA through 73 1/3 innings as a long reliever. Little struck out a league average 23.1% of batters faced but issued walks at a lofty 12% clip. The stuff was nevertheless intriguing enough for the Jays to give him a 40-man spot, which keeps him from becoming a minor league free agent. He has a full slate of option years and can bounce between Toronto and Triple-A Buffalo so long as he holds that place on the roster.

White is a more familiar name for the Toronto fanbase. Acquired from the Dodgers at the 2022 deadline, he has had a few stints on the MLB roster. He hasn’t found much big league success as a Jay, working to a 7.60 ERA across 55 2/3 innings. After being outrighted from the 40-man roster in August, however, he finished the year strong in Buffalo. The 28-year-old posted a 1.69 ERA in four September starts for the Bisons, holding opponents to a .160/.259/.253 line in the process.

That was enough for the Jays to prevent White from leaving in minor league free agency. If he keeps his place on the 40-man throughout the offseason, they’ll need to carry him on next year’s MLB roster or make him available to other clubs because he has exhausted his minor league options.

Blue Jays Outright Mitch White

The Blue Jays announced this afternoon that right-hander Mitch White went unclaimed on waivers. Since this is his first career outright and he has less than three years of major league service, White has to stick in the organization at Triple-A Buffalo.

Toronto acquired White from the Dodgers at last summer’s trade deadline. That deal looks quite regrettable in hindsight, as Double-A righty Nick Frasso has developed into one of the better prospects in a strong L.A. farm system. White was brought in to battle for a spot at the back of the Toronto rotation.

He started eight of 10 games down the stretch last summer, surrendering a 7.74 ERA across 43 innings. He was nevertheless in the mix for the fifth starter role in Spring Training, but an elbow injury cost him the first couple months of the year. White returned in early June and was pushed to middle relief. He tallied 12 2/3 innings across 10 appearances, giving up 11 runs with 13 strikeouts and seven walks.

While the former second-round pick had 3.58 ERA in 105 2/3 innings as a Dodger, he owns a 7.60 mark in 55 2/3 frames since being traded. White is also out of minor league option years, leaving the Jays to either carry him on the MLB roster or designate him for assignment. They chose the latter route upon acquiring Jordan Hicks from St. Louis last Sunday.

The Jays can keep White in Buffalo for the remainder of the season as rotation or long relief depth. He’d qualify for minor league free agency at the start of the offseason unless the Jays add him back onto the MLB roster.
