Padres Trying To Trade Wil Myers

By Tim Dierkes | August 2, 2022 at 3:46pm CDT

The Padres are still trying to trade right fielder Wil Myers in the hour or so remaining until the trade deadline, tweets Joel Sherman of the New York Post.  Padres GM A.J. Preller has been a whirlwind of activity in the last few days, adding Juan Soto, Josh Bell, Josh Hader, and Brandon Drury while shipping out Eric Hosmer, Luke Voit, and a slew of young players.

Myers, 31, signed a six-year, $83MM extension with the Padres in January 2017, and it seems like they’ve been trying to unload the contract most of the time since then.  While Myers surged to a 123 wRC+ from 2020-21,  he sits at just 68 this year in 138 plate appearances after missing over two months with knee inflammation.  He came off the IL yesterday and played first base while batting fifth, and is doing so again in the Padres’ current afternoon tilt against Colorado.

At this stage, Myers is owed about $7MM this year plus a $1MM buyout for 2023, a moveable amount if Preller can identify and include any prospects he’s yet to trade.  During the offseason, the Padres seemed intent on staying under the $230MM competitive balance threshold.  Given all of their additions of late, ducking under for 2022 would be an impressive feat.

Why are the Pirates not getting in on this stuff??????
They could take on Hosmer and Myers and still be under 60M in payroll. Not that the Pads have any prospects left but give us Campusano to take the crap off your hands.

I know, now, but I had that idea years ago that it would have been a perfect fit. And sadly he’d be the best 1B they had the past 20 years since the Josh Bell era.

I agree – that is likely the guy that would go with Meyers. Pirates already have a stud C in the offing, so they’d need someone else.

Campusano can play now though since the position is a mess, and Henry Davis is injured. If they both can hit, in two seasons, one can play 1B or DH.

They should of traded Myers to Washington instead of Voit. Now Hosmer gets to go to Boston, a lefties dream to hit at Fenway, after refusing to go to the Nationals. Get ‘em’ Voit!

Not sure that Washington would have taken that. Hosmer and Voit can hit. Myers can’t.

Yes Pom is owed 10 mill next year but that’s what gets ya the prospects and deal – Get to shake RI and Stassi money as well long term. Prellers living paycheck to paycheck perfect guy to get one over on if you scratch there {immediate} backs as well a little

LOL not only did Preller trade Trea Turner for Wil Myers he made sure that Myers would make more than Turner too. To date Wil Myers has cost the Padres $23m more than Trea Turner earned over the same time.

Preller is an awesome circus act/ reality show. He is actually a really bad GM.

Padres were desperate for national recognition. If you subscribe to the, “there’s no such thing as bad press” idea then all those years of people laughing at SD paid off in the sense that people were now talking about the Padres.

When Myers first came up, he reminded me of Dale Murphy – the build, skillset, swing. I don’t think I expected him to be a back-to-back MVP like Murph, but I thought he’d be a very productive, All-Star caliber kind of guy.

He turned out to be a lot more like Phillies/Rockies era Murph than I would have ever guessed.
