Padres Sign Julio Teheran To Minor League Deal

By Maury Ahram | November 27, 2022 at 11:02am CDT

Veteran right-hander Julio Teherán has signed with the Padres on a minor league deal, reports Jon Heyman of the New York Post. The contract could pay Teherán up to $6MM if he reaches the majors and maxes out the incentives on the deal. Teherán is represented by Mato Sports Management.

A two-time All-Star, Teherán returns to the National League, where he had previously spent nine seasons with the Braves, pitching to a 3.67 ERA in 1360 innings, before departing to join the Angels in 2020 and the Tigers in 2021. His tenure with the Angels was less successful, as the righty pitched to a 10.05 ERA in 31 1/3 innings with a poor 13.4% strikeout rate and a high 10.7% walk rate. Despite these substandard results, Detroit signed the hurler to a minor league contract with an invitation to Spring Training. Teherán would eventually join the major league roster but would be shut down for the season with a right shoulder strain after a single start.

The 31-year-old, joined the Staten Island FerryHawkes of the Atlantic League for the 2022 season before having his contract purchased by the Toros de Tijuana of the Mexican League. The Toros de Tijuana released Teherán in August, but he would soon latch on with the Sultanes de Monterrey, also of the Mexican League. Over the 2022 season, Teherán pitched 68 innings across 13 starts, posting a 3.57 ERA with a 56:10 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

The 11-year MLB vet will look to find a spot on San Diego’s staff, who have seen starters Mike Clevinger and Sean Manaea depart to free agency. However, Nick Martinez figures to earn some starts with his new contract and the Friars have been connected to highly sought-after free agent pitcher Koudai Senga, potentially leaving Teherán as a Triple-A depth piece.

It has been a while since Julio Teheran pitched the last game at the old Atlanta stadium (Turner Field) on October 2, 2016. The Colombian right handed starting pitcher threw his last game on April 3, 2021.

Arrieta wasn’t a gamble, Arrieta was “we need someone to take the ball every 5th day and no one else is healthy enough to do so”, same with Vince Velasquez

Not a bad deal. If he can stay healthy, I can see him picking up innings at the back end of their rotation

Julio pitched through the rough years in Atl and was arguably the best starter for a number of them in the mid 2000’s. He threw a ton of innings and has been torched at every stop since leaving.

Teheran is only 31. His only horrible year was the pandemic shortened season with the Angels. From 2013 to 2019? He started 30 to 33 games every season for Atlanta. Teheran has career WAR over 20. If he is healthy and his pitches pass a scout’s eye test, Julio is a worthwhile gamble. He may not have his magic of 2014 with 4 CGs and a 2.89 era and 1.08 WHIP, but his 3.81 era and 1.32 WHIP from 2019’s juiced ball year was an acceptable 174 innings for a 4 or 5 starter. Put this in your wait and see file.

He’s pitched a whopping 36 innings outside a Braves uniform so “torched at every stop” doesn’t really mean a whole lot.

I don’t know. Pitching at least 175 innings for 7 years straight with solid numbers seems like a Caballo to me.

Can anyone check who pitched more innings than Julio between 2013 and 2019?

Teheran is a “horse” not a “pony” when it comes to durability, but then Mad Max must have been an “ox” and has him beat by a wide margin.

After his star faded, he was supposed to be an innings-eater. He no longer eats innings so he’s just a minor league depth piece.

Hard to believe he’s only 31. He’s one of those pitchers who always out-pitched his peripherals.

Q: Why should a triangle never get into an argument with a circle?

      A: Because it’s pointless.

Also: Parallel lines have so much in common, it’s a shame that they’ll never meet!

Glad to see Teheran back. Pretty sure shoulder problems derailed his career (if I recall correctly) but hopefully he’s healthy. Don’t see why it took a deal up to 6mil but perhaps he is throwing well and other teams were interested.

I don’t know why I said that about the 6mil. What does the team stand to lose by offering incentives? If he meets them they are probably pleased.

Teheran’s fastball can absolutely get crushed when he is off. Not a bad gamble for the friars for some depth tho but wouldn’t pencil him in to be a starter come opening day unless he really impresses during spring training.

Well, Teheran probably can’t do as bad as Jake Arrieta’s four starts for the Friars in 2021! I think it will be easy for coaches to assess Teheran’s stuff and to make the right decision.

Julio pushing rookie Groome and taxi guys Avila/Khner/Wethers for 6th/7th SP spot is a good baseball depth move with upside.. Good AJP signing.. My info says Covid hit him pretty hard and he is just fully recovering from it…so I expect him to be 100% come ST and competing to be SDP 6th starter

He won a job in spring training with Detroit. If healthy, he could do it again. The question is whether he can stay healthy.
