Rockies, Yankees, Braves Interested In Bryan Reynolds

By Mark Polishuk | December 4, 2022 at 9:57pm CDT

Bryan Reynolds’ trade request has sparked a new round of speculation that the Pirates might look to deal the outfielder, and any number of teams could be fits to make bids for the All-Star.  The Rockies are a new team with interest in Reynolds, according to The Denver Post’s Patrick Saunders, while Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette hears that that from a source that the Yankees are still “very much” part of the mix after initially trying to land Reynolds both last winter and at the trade deadline.  The Braves are another team who has previously been linked to Reynolds on the rumor mill, and could re-emerge with “a strong, under-the-radar push for Reynolds this winter,” a source tells The Athletic’s Rob Biertempfel.

The fit is apparent on any of these clubs, as a switch-hitting All-Star who is controlled through the 2025 season is naturally a good fit on almost any roster.  Reynolds could slide right into Atlanta’s left field position, teaming with Michael Harris and Ronald Acuna Jr. as one of baseball’s best starting outfields, and allowing the Braves to move Marcell Ozuna and Eddie Rosario into part-time or DH duty (or possibly into trade bait, if any deals can be found).  Reynolds can likely move right into regular left field work for the Yankees, also moonlighting in center field to spell Harrison Bader once in a while, and Reynolds’ switch-hitting bat will help balance out a New York lineup that is heavy on right-handed hitters.

Colorado is the most likely of this trio to primarily keep Reynolds in center field, though Kris Bryant’s versatility allows the Rockies with some flexibility in figuring out their lineup.  The Rockies’ first goal will be to just get Bryant back onto the field after an injury-plagued 2022, but assuming that Bryant returns in good form, he can bounce around to either corner infield or outfield position, and even play the occasional game in center field.  Bryant played only left field and DH last year, and the Rox might opt to have Bryant and Reynolds in the corner outfield spots flanking Yonathan Daza and Randal Grichuk in center field.  Lineup balance would also be a factor for a mostly right-handed Colorado batting order.

Of course, it remains to be seen if the Pirates will trade Reynolds anywhere.  In response to Reynolds, the Bucs flatly stated that the trade request “will have zero impact on our decision-making this off-season or in the future.”  Pittsburgh’s asking price in any Reynolds trade has been said to be extremely high, as the Pirates seem to regard Reynolds as a building block rather than the latest player to be dealt away as part of their lengthy rebuild.  The two sides were even engaged in extension talks, though the lack of progress in these talks seems to have been a major reason why Reynolds asked to be dealt.

Back in August, Baseball America’s midseason organizational talent rankings put the Rockies (in 10th place) well ahead of both the Yankees (17th) and Braves (28th) in terms of farm system strength.  In theory, Colorado might have some advantage in a bidding war depending on the types of young talent the Pirates would want in return for Reynolds, though BA’s rankings do reflect players that still qualify as minor leaguers.  Not that Atlanta would move Harris or Spencer Strider for Reynolds anyway, but the Braves’ lower ranking reflects how those two young stars had graduated to the big leagues, thus removing two very prominent prospects from BA’s evaluation.  If the Pirates are hopeful of becoming competitive perhaps even as early as 2024, they could be more apt to ask for MLB-ready young players, which would help the Braves and Yankees in the Reynolds talks.

If I have hurt anyone out there, I can’t tell you how much I say from the bottom of my heart I’m so very, very sorry. I pride myself and think of myself as a man of faith, as there’s a drive into deep left field by Castellanos and that’ll be a home run.

From Atlanta I think having 2 MLB ready starters can be a great start to a package, along with Justin Henry-Mallory & Aj smith-Sawyer. If they want true MLB ready Grissom can headline if Swanson is resigned.

And those prospects you listed are the exact reason Atlanta shouldn’t have any interest in this trade. That roster is getting expensive and these guys will be able to step in and perform very soon.

@DTD – You’re validating why they should be in on the trade. Payroll is high – Reynolds is cost-controlled for 3 years. If a high payroll team is heavily depending on inexperienced rookies, you’re taking on a lot or risk. Not all of them rise to the level of Strider/Harris II. If they do not re-sign Swanson, that’s MORE of a need to replace the offense that Swanson leaves with him. To expect Grissom to pull a Jeremy Peña (as Correa’s replacement) or Juan Soto (to Bryce Harper’s replacement) is not what a $200M team can afford to be doing.

With that roster, the veteran presence is enough to offset having a rookie or 2. Plus, Fried and Wright are going to be getting paid big money soon and that savings will be integral to keep both. I also never said I expected anyone to be those type of players.

Agreed. Cashman’s prospect-hugging raises questions about his ability to see this through. However, the Pirates asking price has not been secret, so he should be well aware of what it’s going to take.

That said, I would not be surprised to read a story about Yankees & Pirates closing in on a deal, only for one to be followed by how it fell apart at the last minute.

With the exception of Joey Gallo’s trade, it seems that every time the Rangers are buyers, the price is really high and every time they are sellers, they get almost nothing. They gave up Dillon Tate and Erik Swanson for Beltran, Kyle Hendricks for Ryan Dempster, and got almost nothing from Chris Martin, Darvish, Montero, and some others. I feel like any team looking for whatever the Rangers are looking for will end up having to part with 3 or 4 top prospects.

So, apparently the Yankees have been in consistent contact with the Pirates, leading up to Bryan’s request to be traded, to acquire Reynolds. They are reportedly now closer and still working to get a deal done. I didn’t have any hope the Yankees would do this, but hearing this news makes me more optimistic.

However, I do wonder why Cashman is now so aggressive with Reynolds? Is it because he’s finally trying to build the winning postseason team around a returning Judge, or is he already starting to mitigate the impending loss of Judge by finally acquiring the right players? I’d like to think the former but the cynic in me says the latter, especially knowing Cashman.

I would LOVE for Reynolds to be a Rockie. Depending on the price of course. I’d hate to see Veen or Tovar included. Benny Montgomery and Adael Amador, I could live with going, but I really want to see Veen in center in a year or two. Of the major league Rockies, I would be OK with basically anyone other than Toglia going.

A package of Feltner, Montero, Montgomery, and Amador should be enough. Maybe even too much. But I would love to see it happen.

If the Rockies land Reynolds the NL West becomes very competitive.
Dodgers and Padres already in the mix, Giants have big plans, D Backs are improving. With Colorado looking to get better this division rivals the AL East. No rest for the weary.

I’ve been very critical of Reynolds play in CF. It comes from watching some Pirates games.

But I’m also a believer that a big difference maker in MLB today are teams coaching staffs. The Pirates play very poor fundamental baseball as well as oftentimes appear lackadaisical. The Orioles are a year ahead in their rebuild, but they had an environment where the players hustled and listened even as they were losing 100 games a season.

One rumor has the Braves interested in Reynolds. Obviously they have a CF. They have an exceptional coaching staff. I’ve been wondering if they could work with him on playing CF. I assume you’re a Rockies fan. I don’t know who the Rockies OF coach is, you might. But I do know Bud Black is as good a manager as there is in MLB, and it might well be possible that if Reynolds gets to a professional organization they can square away his play in CF.

No doubt the man can play a major league LF.

I’m actually not much of a Rockies fan myself haha – I keep up with them somewhat, but don’t follow them that closely, so they’re more of a tertiary team for me – but I won’t disagree with you as to the impact of good vs. bad coaching, it can definitely make a difference. My big issue with such a move is more that, even if you’re able to get Reynolds up to playing passable CF, that would likely only mean passable CF by average standards, whereas Coors Field has the largest OF of any stadium, so any lacking in defense he’d have playing there would be magnified even more so than with any other team (especially if you’re gonna have Kris Bryant, who’s not a particularly fantastic defender, next to him). Put him in a corner, he’s fine, but put him in center and you’re asking for him to lose a ton of value on bad defense for all the balls that are going to get by him out there, which puts even more pressure on his bat to perform, and what if it doesn’t? Honestly, it’s beyond me why the Rockies haven’t focused more on OF defense up til now, seeing as how pitchers need all the help they can get there anyways.

Braves likely have to send Contreras, Elder, and another pitching prospect like Smith-Sawver to PIT.

The question is do they want to ship off Contreras….they could pivot and trade Grissom in a deal for Murphy…but that means they have to sign a FA SS

I think Contreras is the better hitter going forward and has more years of control. I don’t expect them to sign a big ss. I don’t know what they would trade for Reynolds. If they are willing to trade Contreras then I expect Reynolds to be a brave.

They already have a top prospect at Catcher so you Braves fans, forget about Contreras.
They’re going to sign Roberto Perez then promote Endy Rodriguez mid season.
Everyone suggesting specific players to offer that earn $9–12 million, that won’t happen, adding significant money to the payroll is off limits

Yankees send Dominguez, one of Germán, King or Schmidt and maybe Higa to get it down. At the deadline they may have been able to get Dominguez. Think Yankees need to be aggressive because an OF of Reynolds Bader and Judge looks pretty impressive. Pirates would love to add a real deal majors ready OF and a SP to the roster

Strengthening by affecting the bullpen weapon King is a bad, bad idea……..he was a major cog in a successful bullpen last year, and their failing in the playoffs prove that he was somewhat irreplaceable….beyond that, doubt that the Pirates think much of Schmidt or German so Dominguez as a headliner will have to include more soon to be major league ready talent for a swap to work…….that means Peraza or Volpe which probably means it doesn’t happen…..at least as far as including Volpe is concerned.

Personally I don’t feel like Reynolds is A cf on many teams, but I would love to see him in Queens. Shift Marte to Cf ,move Reynolds to the corner sign Conforto back and then canha as the 4th outfielder. A package of Mauricio, niddo, peterson,, and maybe a low level minor league prospect gets the job done.

Sorry Oldschool, but I have to ask. Why would the Pirates consider accepting the Mets #6 prospect, a 28 year old backup catcher, a pitcher who spent last season bouncing between AAA, the pen, and rotation, and an unnamed low level nobody in a Reynolds deal? The Pirates reportedly told the Mariners when they inquired on Reynolds that the deal had to start w/Julio Rodriguez. The phone probably goes dead on your offer before Cherington stops laughing. Not a Bucs fan so I don’t have a dog in this hunt, but I suspect the Pirates probably start any conversation w/the Mets by saying “We’ll take Alvarez, Baty, etc…………..”

I see nothing wrong with a solid player on a team that has demonstrated that it will not spend near the median to request a trade if the team does not offer an extension. I also see nothing wrong with the team declining to offer an extension and declining to make the trade. the Pirates need to start spending more, how they do it is a FO decision. Though the Santana signing strikes me as a poor alternative.

He and his agent know he’s wanted by a lot of contending teams and the Pirates have been bottom feeders for years, with no signs of contending any time soon. He might have no standing contractually, but he is a recent All-Star who saw the Pirates hand Ke’Bryan Hayes an 8-year contract after only two seasons with the big club. I can understand Reynolds’ frustration.

Right. But Hayes’s $8.75M AAV and $70M over 8 years is still a sight better than Reynolds’ total ML earnings of $8,055,725.00; and Hayes’s 2023 salary of $10M beats Reynolds’ 2023 salary of $6.75M.

In fact, Ben shouldn’t trade him for less than a proven 4/5 starter and a ML-ready OF. Let’s fill some needs, Ben, if you’re going to cave. Not a bunch of kids who could be ready in 2024-2025. That’s BS. Pirates fans want to see some improvement in 2023 in your perpetual rebuild.

Expectations are just that — expectations. It’s good to be optimistic, but until they show that they’re better than they’ve been, the Pirates — like every other team — are as good as their record. I recall the Jays’ Vlad Jr. declaring that 2021 was the preview and 2022 was going to be the movie. The movie, as it turned out, was one win better than the preview.

I’d love to have him but we are starting to run low on what we can offer for him. It would take a couple solid prospects, which are farm is so thin, even that’s becoming hard to find. Leaving one of our better prospects being the trade bait and I don’t see the Braves giving them up nor do the pirates really want them. Like VG, Braves can’t really afford to give up without a SS replacement. Muller or elder maybe? But is that really enough for the pirates to make a deal? Not in my opinion. Muller and a couple other lower tier top 30 guys might get the deal done but I’m not sure it’s quite attractive enough

No…it just stinks. I hope he stays until 7/31/25. The Pirates did apparently offer him the largest contract in total value and AAV in team history, so they tried. Probably 6 years $72-78 mil. I’m not sure he’s worth much more than that yet. One more season like 2021 would likely raise his market value to the 7/$100m range. We’ll see.
