Mets Place Justin Verlander On Injured List

By Steve Adams | March 31, 2023 at 4:55pm CDT

March 31: The Mets have now officially placed Verlander on the IL and recalled Megill, per Tim Healey of Newsday. The move is retroactive to March 28.

March 30: The Mets announced that they will place right-hander Justin Verlander on the 15-day injured list with a “low-grade teres major strain.” According to the team, Verlander “will continue throwing at moderate intensity” and be reevaluated in a week. They’ll provide a further update at that time. Righty Tylor Megill will be recalled from Triple-A and take Verlander’s spot in the rotation for the time being, tweets Anthony DiComo of MLB.com.

The 40-year-old Verlander’s velocity was down in his final outing of spring training, but the team hadn’t hinted at any type of injury until today’s out-of-the-blue announcement. General manager Billy Eppler tells the Mets beat that Verlander first reported discomfort last night and had an MRI this morning (Twitter link via Newsday’s Tim Healey). Verlander himself said he was working through some things that he initially attributed to routine spring discomfort (video link via DiComo). However, when he felt continued discomfort into his final bullpen of spring training and “connected the dots” with his decreased velocity in his most recent spring outing, he decided to get checked out.

Until next week’s follow-up MRI, it’ll be impossible to know just how long Verlander might be sidelined. He’s voiced confidence that it’s minor in nature and said he’d pitch if this occurred during the postseason. That’s encouraging, but even a brief absence is notable.

The Mets are already without one of Verlander’s fellow offseason signees, left-hander Jose Quintana, who will miss upwards of half the season following a bone graft procedure to remove a benign lesion from his ribcage. Quintana’s injury pushed sixth starter David Peterson into the rotation, and they’ll now already be tapping into Megill, their No. 7 option, before a single inning of their season has transpired.

Verlander lost the 2021 season to Tommy John surgery and not only returned in 2022 but improbably stormed back to ace status at age 39, winning the American League Cy Young Award on the heels of a 1.75 ERA over 175 innings. He punched out 27.8% of his opponents against a masterful 4.4% walk rate, averaging 95.1 mph on his heater along the way and generally looking like his typical, dominant self. That brilliant comeback prompted the Mets to make a two-year, $86.66MM offer, matching the annual value on the record-setting contract they’d given to co-ace Max Scherzer.

Assuming Verlander’s absence indeed proves brief, he’ll still be expected to pair with Scherzer and give the Mets two of this generation’s most accomplished arms atop the starting staff. Still, it’s surely a gut-punch to a team that moved on from now-former ace Jacob deGrom largely for durability reasons in recent years. Verlander can be placed on the IL retroactive to March 27 — three days is the largest backdating permissible under MLB rules — so he’ll be shelved for at least the first 12 days of the season.

When people say that x team shouldn’t have made the playoffs, I always wonder where you draw the line. If we still used the pre-1994 system the Braves wouldn’t have made the playoffs in 2021.

Problem for you is the Phillies were better in the playoffs in 2022. The Mets lost to one of the teams the Phillies beat. It would be different if the Phillies had an easier path. They didn’t. 2023 is a new season and nothing from last season matters. Get over it

Anyone who thought this roster construction was good by Cohen, doesn’t know baseball. Two 40 year old pitchers anchoring your rotation isn’t the way you build a roster Stevie. No matter how much cash you toss at them.

I agree with you the Mets didn’t do major upgrades. They spent alot on money and on injury prone players. In my opinion the Mets are kinda doing what the 2021 giants did and run the same team from 2021 out in 2022. We saw that didn’t end well for the Mets. Currently; the 2023 didn’t make any huge upgrades from the 2022 team that ran out of steam. With the current line up I could see the Mets missing the playoffs all together

What players aren’t injury prone from 20 to 40? All you have to do is read the headlines of almost every article posted on this sight. I like the fact that Cohen is so eager to win that he spent a fortune this off-season trying to get there. The problem is, he seemed to go for names instead of positions. It would have helped if he listened to a baseball man to help guide him in what players to pick. For example, signing seven big name pitchers while neglecting 3b because they don’t have big names doesn’t add up to a winning team.

        @Benjamin

Name me one free agent high end starter that was not injury prone this past offseason … then remember the mets needed 3 starters Regardless if you viewed megill and peterson as rotation pieces or not you will need atleast 2 starters for depth in the minors and the mets lost 3 top starters in Degrom, Bassitt, and Walker.

@Benjamin, in 14 seasons Scerzer has started 30 or more games 11 times, then 2 seasons with 27 and 23 starts. The third being Covid. He has been anything but injury prone.

As for Verlander in 16 seasons 13 have been 30 or more starts. One season with 28 and another with 20. He injured UCL in 2020 and missed remainder of season and 2021. Aside from Tommy John Surgery, Verlander to has been an absolute workhorse. The notion that the 2 are injury prone is absolutely laughable.

You’re talking reason to trolls. Despite the fact that Cohen is trying to donwhat the Dodgers did. They bumped the payroll up 100M 10 years ago to try to win while they rebuilt the organization. It’s a long term plan. Oh yeah and JV has a minor injury and his and Max’s careers are the picture of health and consistency.

I agree with this. Ridiculous money for two 40 year old pitchers, albeit HOF pitchers and putting them as your 1+2. I don’t blame Verlander or Scherzer at all. It falls on Steve Cohen thinking about ticket sales and marketing over long-term stability in the rotation

Teres Major injuries result in pain and difficulty with activities that require sideways or backwards movements with the arm. Isolated tears of the teres major are quite uncommon, but may occur in baseball or cricket players, especially pitchers and bowlers.

Especially ones that come with a loss of velocity. Doesn’t mean it’s serious but he’s lying saying he’d be pitching if it was the playoffs.

I’m guessing the loss of velocity could be due to Verlander slightly backing off on how hard he throws because of the discomfort.

When will fools get a grip and realize that means nothing to Cohen? Its a long term plan. Dodgers added 100Mil+ to the payroll 10 years ago to stay competitive while they rebuilt the organization. He’s trying to do what they did, and frankly more owners should be doing what the Mets, Pads, Phillies, and Rangers are doing. These rich jagoffs won’t open their books while they collect millions and crap on their fans, ie Cincinnati. Their fans deserve better.

I know the age doesn’t help w injury risk, but we’re seeing all pitchers can get hurt, and can be a total fluke. Look at max fried, Joe musgrove, severino (though he’s always hurt). I just never got the logic that degrom was more of an injury risk than JV, when JV missed all 2020 and 2021 w TJS, and degrom missed half of 2021 w arm issues and 2/3 of 2022 w scapula issue. Before that he was a rock, so that whole logic never made sense to me. They all get hurt unfortunately.

Jon Arson Heyman was calling deGrom a part-time pitcher, though, in spite of him having more innings the last 3 years than Verlander. Take that NY media! Some fans are actually as bad as journalists, but they certainly don’t makeup for all the writers and social media fans hoping deGrom got injured.

“The ‘de’ is properly an internominal (between names) rather than a forename/given name or a surname/family name. ‘De’ strictly means ‘of’, so Jacob of Gromm.” It is neither correct nor incorrect to use the Americanized De or de.

In a sentence in English, it’s a capitalized D if used at the beginning of the sentence.

It’s a Dutch name (Germanic), not a Latin one so the “de” means “THE”, not “of”. Jacob the Grom, not Jacob of Grom. DeSmid means the smith.

When using a Latin or Spanish name in a sentence, the “de” would not need to be used at all regardless of placement in the sentence. Just the “Grom”

The way baseball is set up now with the 3 wildcard teams it is more about just get in than have to win a division. Scherzer and Verlander are both old I was thinking to myself this week that the Mets need to plan on skipping both of these starters several times during the year to keep them fresh.

I will agree with other comments that Cohen spent a lot of money this season but didn’t necessary make the team a lot better. Basically the Mets swapped Degrom for Verlander and a got a different catcher.

It’s a long season for sure but on paper the Mets aren’t a powerhouse team that has a fear factor depth roster like maybe Atlanta has

That’s not totally true. We’ve seen one season of this new format. The NL WC team saw success. The AL WC teams got bounced quickly. I actually think the new format, while adding an extra team, ensures that WC teams have a harder path. Time will tell, but one season is not enough to make any claim one way or the other.

I already predicted this once the Mets signed him. 95% of the people on this site have no idea what they are talking about when it comes to the Mets. Since day 1 I’ve talked about how bad the Eppler signing was, the Verlander signing was a complete waste of money for a 40 year old pitcher who missed about 1 and a half seasons to injury prior to last year, Vogelbach is a waste of a roster spot, the trade deadline was awful, JD Davis for Ruf was beyond stupid, and I will be right about this horrid bullpen thats easily the worst staff in the National League. Mets will be lucky to get 85 wins, meanwhile they spent 400 million dollars this offseason, what a freakin joke

@bronxmac77 how does someone that can’t run, can’t play the field, and can’t hit lefties make an MLB roster? It just doesn’t make any sense. Would rather see the prospect take over DH if you didnt want to spend any money at that position. Clueless front office

Dude, take a chill pill. I guarantee you that the Mets will not have the worst bullpen in the NL and that they will win at least 86 games. They will likely have an above average bullpen and win about 95 games. They could win the World Series this year and you wouldn’t even enjoy it, because you’re consumed by the negative.

Lol Texas is a pretty common sentiment here, too. Look at some of the comments on Texas news that has nothing at all to do with deGrom (Jake McCarthy signing, Evoldi, Heaney, Grossman, Otto injury, Odorizzi injury, etc.). I do wonder what team is primarily responsible for those comments.

Texas’ best signing was Bruce Bochy. I saw him perform miracles in SD. When he moved to SF and finally had a front office that knew a thing or two, he built his HOF resume. IF anyone can get Texas over the hump, Boch is the guy.

How was this so predictable? The Mets never learn.

They lost the division last year by one game. One game a starter like Scherzer or Verlander is injured and misses time.

Meanwhile, their rookies step up but they still choose to invest and overpay in better but more fragile free agents.
