Reds Promote Levi Stoudt

By Darragh McDonald | April 19, 2023 at 8:25am CDT

April 19: The Reds announced this morning that Stoudt has been activated from the taxi squad and is now on the active Major League roster to start today’s game. Righty Casey Legumina was optioned to Triple-A Louisville to clear a spot on the 26-man roster.

April 18, 2:10pm: Manager David Bell tells reporters, including Bobby Nightengale of the Cincinnati Enquirer, that it will just be a spot start for Stoudt. He’ll push the rotation back a day to give Greene an extra day of rest after getting hit on the shin by a comebacker in his most recent start.

1:55pm: The Reds announced that pitching prospect Levi Stoudt has been added to their taxi squad and is scheduled to start tomorrow’s game, which will be his major league debut. Additionally, the club reinstated right-hander Lucas Sims from the injured list and optioned fellow righty Kevin Herget to Triple-A. Stoudt already has a 40-man roster spot but a corresponding move will be required to get him on the active roster.

Stoudt, 25, came over to the Reds in the trade that sent Luis Castillo to the Mariners. He was selected by the latter club in the third round of the 2019 draft, then had Tommy John surgery shortly after, with his rehab coinciding with the minor leagues being canceled by the pandemic in 2020. Despite not yet making his professional debut, Baseball America considered him to be Seattle’s #12 prospect going into 2021. He was able to return to the mound that year, making 15 starts between High-A and Double-A, posting a 3.31 ERA in that time along with a 25.5% strikeout rate and 11% walk rate.

He was bumped up to the #8 spot on BA’s ranking of Mariner prospects for 2022, but that would end up being a tumultuous season for him. He had a 5.28 ERA through 18 Double-A starts. He dropped his walk rate to 5.9% but he also allowed 13 home runs in 87 innings. Nonetheless, the Reds still liked him enough to make him one of the four prospects they acquired in the Castillo deal. He finished strong after the trade, tossing five scoreless innings in a Double-A start before getting bumped to Triple-A for his final six starts, registering a 3.32 ERA in that time. BA ranked him #16 in the Reds’ system coming into 2023.

Stoudt would have been Rule 5 eligible this past December but the Reds added him to their roster to prevent him from being selected. He’s made three more Triple-A starts in the early going here with a 4.09 ERA, though an 18% walk rate, .185 batting average on balls in play and 94.2% strand rate suggest he probably deserved worse. Regardless, it’s a small sample and the club has decided he’s ready to try the big leagues.

It seems like Stoudt will be the replacement for Connor Overton, who was placed on the injured list over the weekend. Stoudt will slot into the club’s rotation alongside Hunter Greene, Nick Lodolo, Graham Ashcraft and Luis Cessa for now. Luke Weaver has been on a rehab assignment after starting the season on the injured list and seemed in line to jump to the big leagues this week, though it’s unclear why Stoudt is now taking the spot instead.

I swear I don’t understand the hate for Joey Votto. He’s the Reds best player since Barry Larkin. His contract hasn’t even been that bad.

Votto hasn’t been bad during his contract, barring maybe a few of the later years, but it’s more based on the fact that the Reds have been bad for most of those years. Had they been good, the discussion on Votto’s contract would be completely different.

Votto’s contract has been like a LEAD WEIGHT on the Reds. Signing a guy you already controlled for MULTIPLE seasons, to a 10 yr deal is bad business, just ask Detroit how their Miggy extension turned out. Votto has been FAR more valuable to “Tik Tok” than he ever has been to the Reds.

Worst thing about it is that joey votto squeezed every penny he possibly could out of the Reds and then tried to pretend like it was a ‘hometown discount’. It was the 2nd or third biggest contract in MLB history at the time of signing. Also the fact that he recently said that he will retire during the season if he’s not performing well, which is a complete lie that he knows that no reporter will ever call him out on. joey votto is not leaving a penny on the table- zero chance- and he will be awful again this year just like he was last year.

Overrated Votto is an analytics darling, because he gets on base a couple times a week, much like the SIMILARLY OVERATED former player, Shin Shoo Choo, who analytics nerds called “best player in MLB” for a couple yrs.

It’s only April 18, but the Reds may be the most surprising team so far this season.

Stoudt is the next of many youngsters it appears they’ll be calling up this season.

They play good baseball. Was great to see Nick Senzel play 3B last night. He looks so comfortable there…and he’s a very good 3B. They have enough young quality OF’s. If they’re committed to Spencer Steer at 3B they should do the right thing and trade Senzel to a team that needs a solid 3B. Nick Krall and his staff have made some very smart trades. Am sure they could get back a young player or two to add to that impressive core.

I’ll tell you Jasson Dominguez would be looking real good in that Reds uniform right now! Let’s face it Cincinnati blew a better trade for Luis Castillo last season. Sweeney, Waldichuk, Sears, and Medina would of come to Cincy with Dominguez.

@pohle- I kid you not. I know for a fact that Dominguez was in the package to get Castillo. The Yankees preference was to trade for Castillo and not for Montas. The teams agreed to a trade that included Dominguez, Sweeney and Waldichuk and others, but then the Reds took the Mariners offer instead and said Volpe or Peraza would have to be included in any package for Castillo. The Yankees obviously said no.

@lamars- I would of traded to the Reds Peraza, Sweeney, Waldichuk, and Sears for Castillo if I was the GM of the Yankees, which would of been fair for both sides. I would of hung on to Volpe and Dominguez though.

@lamars- I definitely think it would of gotten done if the Yankees would of offered this deal earlier prior to the deadline. The Yankees didn’t think Volpe was going to be playing shortstop, instead they thought Peraza was going to play short this season, that’s my reasoning. Smh. Who really knows? I feel if Peraza stays on the Yankees, then Volpe will be playing 2nd eventually, if Gleyber is moved. Nice talk, and be well my friend.

I’ve been on here for years writing that the Reds were playing Senzel out of position. His natural positions are 2B or 3B. Anyone that has played any baseball can see that.

As for the Reds…..let’s put it this way – most love the Pirates rebuild. Yet it’s the Reds that are primarily playing youngsters and progressing – and their youngsters are better and playing better fundamental baseball. Krall and company made some fantastic trades.

I find it hilarious that some people think the Luis Castillo trade was bad or think the Yankees are the way.

First of all Yankees and top populated cities always have overrated prospects in the rankings.

Second of all the reds got 2 solid SS prospects Marte probably a future 3B, Arroyo a 2025 call up ETA and both will be solid we hope.

Stoudi has potential to be a solid SP
    Moore a possible MLB reliever.

Not terrible for 1.5 years of Castillo

With the extension it’s looking like a fair trade.

I think the Mahle trade we robbed the twins.

‘First of all Yankees and top populated cities always have overrated prospects in the rankings.”

      Johhn;

      Oh, what you wrote!

For at least a year-and-a-half I’ve read that Anthony Volpe was a top prospect….and then that he was THE top prospect in all of MiLB.

His Spring Training was so good he forced himself onto the Yankees roster. Now I’m reading – in numerous national publications – that he’s a base stealing marvel, even though he’s not that fast a runner! He’s stolen 7 bases in 7 tries! The man’s revolutionizing the game! No stopping greatness.

I follow the Orioles. Although they’re not rookies, Jorge Mateo has has stolen 8 bases in 9 attempts, while Cedric Mullins is 8 for 8. You see any articles on their running prowess? I haven’t.

See any articles that point out that the best prospect in MiLB last year is now lightening it up at the ML level offensively by slashing .191 /.309 / .319 / .628 with and OPS+ of 77?

Look, the guy is 21 years-old, so it’s wrong to dump on him. On the other hand, Bryce Harper and Juan Soto came up at age 19 and weren’t batting 9th. Add in that at best Volpe is a passable MLB SS, and nowhere near as good as young teammate Oswald Peraza is defensively at SS….and very probably offensively as well.

I follow the Phillies a lot. Couldn’t understand why they weren’t pretty much sweeping the Reds so far this year. Heck, they Reds beat them up a few times. The Reds got no pub at all – even I thought they were in the early stages of a rebuild…with most of their good young players still in the minors. Thought it was lousy Phillies pitching. But I’ve watched the Reds play other teams. They have a lot of very good young players – including 2 SS’s (one of whom will have to move to another position) in Elly De La Cruz and Noelvi Marte. Both of whom are Volpe’s age and stand a very good chance of being a much better all-around player than he is.

Who isn’t impressed with Hunter Greene? But I need to see more of the Reds pitchers. For position players: Stephenson and India have proved they can play at the ML level; while TJ Friedl and Jake Fraley are smart players that do the little things and make big plays. There are others of course, starting with Spencer Steer and more coming shortly.

The NLC is becoming very good.

@Johhn- I find it so hilarious that out of all those shortstop prospects that you mentioned none are on the same page as Jasson Dominguez. Bottom line- the Yankees package was better then the Mariners. Marte out of the trade will likely be the best out of the bunch, but he is no Jasson Dominguez! Dominguez could be the next Julio Rodriguez. We’ll see.

The Yankees offered the Reds one of there top 5 prospects the rest were Yankees 2nd tier prospects. The Mariners offered up tier 1 prospects from there system. The Yankees trying to get Castillo for cheap is why they didn’t get him.

@Tiger22matt- You’ve never been more wrong about what the Yankees actually offered. Go ask the Reds now and see if they should of taken the Yankees offer. You’d be surprised with their answer.

The Yankees weren’t offering there top prospects the Mariners did. Next time don’t try and keep all of your top prospects when an elite pitcher is available.

He was the only top prospect in that package. The rest were mid tier in the Yankees system.

@Tiger- …And at the end of the day the Yankees offer was still better, sorry. Dominguez, Waldichuk, Sweeney and Sears would of really help the Reds on their mlb roster and in their minor league system as well.

          @Captain
I think the Reds liked their package better and received two of Seattle’s top Prospects Marte and Arroyo who were ranked #19 last year and 58th last year. Plus both are currently ranked #26 and #38th. While Dominguez was ranked #47 and #41 this year. Besides Dominguez and Sears the Yankees package was light as none of the other prospects were even in the top 100. And it shows with their trade of Medina and Sears for Montas.

Nah Arroyo is going to be a gem for the Reds, as an M’s fan he was the one player I did not want to part with. Marte is going to have to move to 3B and has likely peaked as a prospect, he will be a serviceable major leaguer though. Stroudt will be a very good middle of the rotation piece. Lol, Dominguez, comparing him to a generational talent is a huge stretch.

      @Captain
Typical Yankees fans are always overrating their prospects. Nothing about Dominguez suggests he is or could be the next Julio Rodriquez. If I recall correctly JRod was ranked #5 and if not was ranked in the top 1o. Dominguez on the other hand was ranked #49.

@lamars- no you are absolutely 100%. Correct, and every team in the majors should do this, not just the Yankees. (Overrate their prospects) But if your able to land 3 or 4 top prospects in a teams top 10 for a all-star, then you’ve done well for your team. Dominguez or Peraza, Sweeney, Waldichuk and Medina were all in the top 10 of the Yankees top prospects. Sears was in their top 30 I believe. This package was definitely worth it for the Reds. Although I am much higher on Dominguez then Peraza. Cincy wanted Peraza. Yanks said no. Smh

@leftyr32- it’s funny, I never would of offered Dominguez in a Castillo trade. I wanted the Yankees to trade Oswald Peraza instead of Dominguez. I’m so happy as a Yankees fan that the Reds rejected their offer for Castillo. Thank you!

I would make the same trade again if I had it to do over again. Yankees prospects are always overrated and overhyped. Volpe is the latest and Dominguez will follow suit. Bragging up Waldichuk, Sears, and Schmidt at the time is more proof of this. Yankee fans are just pissed they got turned down and it cost them in the playoffs. Plus the guy they got was damaged goods. Cashman is an idiot

Funny how you’re incapable of responding to the actual comment, you just deflect and deflect, you know why? Bc you’re a loser who literally sits in mommys basement, spouting off about things you clearly know nothing about.

Just go fun, i found out who you are in real life. So keep me running your ignorant mouth little boy, bc I can easily have a lot of fun with you. Now run along child.

Castillo is an ace, Dominguez has a high ceiling but he is still as I stated been one of the most overrated players and overhyped.

Why is there so many Yankees fan crying they don’t have Castillo. We got 2 top 100 prospects and a mid SP prospect and a reliever….

Stoudi I think will be a solid SP.

Also good new hunter Greene has been extended….kinda weird he is the first to be extended tbh….gets extended as he gets injured but hopefully this is a domino affect, would love to see India, lodolo, and ashcraft extended.

If not I could see India being traded especially considering Elly and McLain are practically MLB players.

Suprised no Twins fans in the comments, we robbed you with petty, steer, and CES

Nice to see Stoudt get a ML start. This season is all about sorting through their prospects. As the season wears on, Williamson, Abbott, Phillips, Richardson, as well as Gutierrez and Dunn will be looking for ML start opportunities. I hope Stoudt is ready.

Should be easier to see and barrel up Stoudt. Especially second time through the order

Spot starter here and there but I wouldn’t expect too much from him

Sure he’ll get 5 IP/2 ER starts here and there but overall he’s a guy they’re going to be able to barrel up
