Tigers Select Andy Ibanez, Place Kerry Carpenter On IL

By Simon Hampton | April 29, 2023 at 8:55am CDT

The Tigers have made a series of roster moves this morning, placing outfielder Kerry Carpenter on the 10-day injured list with a right shoulder strain and selecting the contract of infielder Andy Ibanez. To make room on the 40-man roster for Ibanez, right hander Matt Manning was transferred to the 60-day IL.

Ibanez was outrighted off the Tigers’ roster in January, but returns after hitting .297/.418/.609 with five home runs this year at Triple-A. The 30-year-old made his big league debut for the Rangers two years ago and has slashed a combined .258/.306/.384 with eight home runs across 400 plate appearances. The Tigers claimed him off waivers at the end of last season. The majority of his playing time has been spent at second and third, but he has filled in in the outfield as well as at first.

Carpenter’s hitting .217/.280/.464 with four home runs to begin the season, his second big league campaign. The 19th round pick from 2019 showed a bit more promise last year, but has struggled to start 2023. The 25-year-old broke out in Triple-A last year, slashing .331/.420/.644 with eight home runs in 138 plate appearances, and so while he’s yet to hit a great deal at the big leagues there is a bit of promise there.

Interesting. Was thinking would be 8 weeks before Manning actually could take the mound for the Tigers, this move confirms this. He can still start his rehab at a normal time and hopefully be back by mid June. Still, surprised they added Ibanez over brining back Kreidler. Sure, Ibanez has had a solid year in Toledo so far, but so has Kreidler since his demotion. Plus Kreidler doesn’t require a roster move now, or when Manning is ready to come back.

Ya makes more sense, even Malloy, but Harris is a hard read on his actions

Kreidler and Malloy probably shall get many and regular at-bats. This wouldn’t be guaranteed in Detroit.

I believe Kreidler changed his swing, so maybe they are letting him get more used to it before calling him back up.

And Malloy is still just a kid. No need to rush him. Let him get his regular ABs…. Is probably what they were thinking.

ibanez isnt a piece that they dread losing. if he breaks out, he can earn some more time, but for the most part he was in their org to see time in the majors when he is needed, and likely was always planned to be added and removed from the 40 as necessary.

I don’t understand why they won’t give Kreidler an opportunity, either. He looks solid defensively, and is likely to hit at least as well as Baez, though that’s not a high bar. If their offense wasn’t pathetic already, losing their best bat in Carpenter will only make them a harder watch.

Looks like they made another move. On MLB, Short is listed as the SS and 9th hitter for the noon game.

It’s being reported that Kriedler is dealing with a sore knee.

Odd thing about Kerry Carpenter’s injury was that Hinch said it took place on the throw and somehow wasn’t the result of him crashing into the wall.

What a play though. He was supposed to be a liability in the outfield, and I’d say he’s done just fine.

It looked like he banged his arm against the wall making the catch. I’m guessing it was the motion of the throw that made the injury obvious. I doubt the two are unrelated. But I’m certainly no doctor!

Hope Carpenter makes it back soon. I’m okay seeing what Ibanez has…might be a good bench piece to trade at the deadline if he can put together some good at bats. Time to dump Nevin though. He has looked worse than Kreidler did when he was up at the start of the year. I want to see Henry-Malloy get some time with Carpenter out not continue to watch Nevin hit .050. I know BA is not the be all end all (i.e. Maton has a low avg but is walking, hitting HRs and driving in runs), but Nevin needs to go.

Nevin will probably be a late bloomer like his Dad was.
I would stash him down in Toledo for the rest of the season then give him a look perhaps if he is doing wel, in September.

Looks kike that is what they are going to do. They are keeping Short up and sent him down and he goes out and blasts a Homer just before that. Poor timing.
